10 TIPS FOR FINDING FUN IN FREDERICK COUNTY BY: MICHELLE KERSHNER, TOURISM COUNCIL OF FREDERICK COUNTY Whether you’ve lived in Frederick County for decades or are just starting to explore, you’ll discover boredom busters around every corner. Festivals, sites, and attractions are eager to host visitors and the area’s natural beauty and resources provide opportunities to enjoy simple pleasures.
Fun on the Farm is Ripe for the Picking
Agri-tourism may be a new buzzword in the travel industry, but for residents in Frederick County, it’s a way of life. Spring and early
14
SPRING 2011
summer are prime growing seasons, and both Catoctin Mountain Orchard and Pryor Orchards near Thurmont offer a variety of local favorites in their markets. However, locals know the real fun is picking your own. Visitors can pluck firm, ripe blueberries and other select fruit right from the limb and friendly staff will lead you to the ripest patches. Wind through western Frederick County’s country roads to South Mountain Creamery for an authentic—and free—dairy farm experience. Visitors can stop in the milking parlor from 1:30-5:30 PM daily to watch the milking action or help bottle-feed
the baby calves at 4:00 PM daily. Round off your trip with a visit to their store to try their homemade ice cream.
Explore Our Wild Side
Thanks to the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo, there’s no need to travel great distances for a safari experience. Located in northern Frederick County, visitors can hop aboard the wildlife preserve’s army surplus troop carrier for the hour-long Global Wildlife Safari Ride. This is one of the mid-Atlantic’s only escorted truck safaris, and visitors can have close encounters with zebra, bison, antelope, deer, sheep, llamas, and more on the adventure. Tucked away near Walkersville is the beautiful 22.5 acre Fountain Rock Park and Nature Center. It contains one of Maryland’s strongest springs, a playground, trout pond, and historic lime kilns. But inside the nature center is where the wild things are. Visitors can get up close and personal with snakes, toads, tarantulas, turtles, and Madagascar hissing cockroaches. The staff frequently brings out animals to interact with guests, and there are plenty of hands-on activities for children. Newly opened, the Catoctin Creek Park and Nature Center also offers grounds to roam and educational exhibits. Put your quick-fire skills and mettle to the test at Adventure Park USA. At this Wild West-themed entertainment center, you can challenge yourself on a ropes course, ride the Wildcat rollercoaster, or restore peace in a multi-level Western laser tag town. For more Wild West fun, board the Walkersville Southern Railroad for their Jesse James Day train ride. Experience an Old West train raid, complete with (fake) jewels and money for the heist. From vintage 1920s passenger cars, riders will also enjoy breathtaking views.
Ring in Spring
This year, there’s an extra reason to celebrate–the first weekend in April marks the grand opening of the new Frederick Visitor Center on East Street. All are invited to see this former cannery warehouse’s remarkable transformation into a state-of-the-art visitor center where visitors can take in the space’s dramatic murals, exhibits, and newly released visitor orientation film, “A Turn of the Wheel.” Luckily in Frederick City and County, fun isn’t limited to just one season. A packed special events calendar and numerous attractions offer a variety of activities throughout the year. For more information about these attractions, area events, and other things to see and do in Frederick County, visit www.FrederickTourism.org or call 301-600-2888.

IN THE COMMUNITY
FAMILY VOLUNTEERING IN THE COMmunity BY: MELISSA SINES, HANDS ON FREDERICK
Volunteering as a family is something we can all do to help teach our children about thinking beyond their own concerns. It is a hands-on way to teach children the values of kindness, compassion, tolerance, community responsibility, and good citizenship. When volunteering as a family, all family members can use their existing talents, learn new skills, and feel valued for their contributions. You will also gain quality family time, strengthen bonds by sharing in a volunteer experience, and give your family members an opportunity to lead. And, of course it’s fun! Whether there are two of you or you have a big extended family, if you combine efforts to help others–that’s volunteering! There are countless ways your family can volunteer in the local community. Around the holidays like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, etc., consider making cards for residents of a local nursing home. Spend a morning delivering your handmade creations and take the time to chat with each of the residents.
If you are looking for something a little more involved, consider signing your family up as a team for the annual BIG Sweep event that takes place each spring. The BIG Sweep is HandsOn Frederick County’s county-wide beautification project that raises money for participating area non-profits. Structured like a walk-a-thon, teams collect donations from family, friends, and other supporters for their chosen non-profit. Instead of walking, however, BIG Sweep participants pick up trash from Frederick County roadsides and dump sites. In 2010, over 1,000 people participated in the BIG Sweep. They cleared over 13 tons of trash and recyclables and 344 tires from Frederick County roads, parks, and waterways. In 2011, this event will be celebrated along with a grassroots Earth Day event celebrated in the heart of Downtown Frederick. For more information about family volunteer opportunities or to sign your family up for the BIG Sweep contact HandsOn Frederick County at 301-663-5214 or check out our website at www.handsonfrederickcounty.org.
Does your family like to read together? Share your love for reading with those less fortunate. Gather up all the books that your family has outgrown or no longer reads, make a few decorative bookmarks and donate them to a homeless shelter for families. Want to help animals in need? Contact the Frederick County Animal Control office or any other pet rescue and ask what type of supplies they need. Ask your friends and family members if they are willing to donate items for your chosen pet rescue organization and then as a family, sort your donations and take them to the shelter. During the winter months it is important to consider our local wildlife. A very fun, yet easy to-do project is for the birds! Gather up some pine cones from your yard or a nearby park, spread peanut butter on them, and roll them in bird seed. Hang them from a tree in your yard and watch the birds enjoy their feast.

TAKE A PEEK BEYOND THE GARDEN GATES BY: JENNIFER MARTIN, CELEBRATE FREDERICK! Have you ever wondered what lies behind the charming wrought iron gate you’ve passed by? If you walk through the gate will you find a relaxing garden oasis, a whimsical playground of color, or an elegant space filled with Old World charm? You are invited to find out during the annual Beyond the Garden Gates Garden Tour and Marketplace on Saturday, May 21st and Sunday, May 22nd held from 1:00 to 5:00 PM each day. The 2011 tour will feature seven private and three public gardens to explore, enjoy, and be inspired by. All of the gardens are located in the vicinity of Downtown Frederick, many within walking distance of one another. In addition to taking in the sights and scents of the gardens, guests are encouraged to take time to meet the local artists working in many of the spaces. Their visions of the gardens will come alive on canvas right before your eyes. Returning for the second year is the Garden Marketplace, located at the Official Garden Tour Hospitality Center. Here tour attendees can browse garden-related merchandise, purchase refreshments, or enjoy a performance by local musicians. Tickets for the tour, which is held rain or shine, cost $20.00 per person and can be purchased beginning in April at www.CelebrateFrederick.com. Proceeds from the tour support two worthy causes. Half of the funds will be allocated to the participating garden club. This year’s recipient is the Green Walled Garden Club, to help support community projects like the maintenance of local parks and youth-oriented programming. The remaining balance benefits a beautification project selected by the Garden Tour Committee. The Beyond the Garden Gates Garden Tour & Marketplace is a project of Celebrate Frederick. Celebrate Frederick is a private, non-profit corporation working in partnership with The City of Frederick to plan and implement special events and activities to

FREDERICK COUNTY HISTORY
OUR “GRAND OLD LADY” – ROSE HILL MANOR BY NANCY D. SWEET, PROGRAM COORDINATOR, THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF ROSE HILL MANOR PARK A grand old Fredericktonian resides at 1611 North Market Street in Frederick. With doors open wide, and porticos welcoming, Rose Hill Manor beckons one to enter and stay awhile. Indeed, over the last 200 years hundreds of thousands of guests have done so.
Also, Rose Hill offers pre-arranged and walk-in tours, an Easter Egg Roll, spring and fall festivals (with the Frederick County Farm Museum Association), a Colonial Faire, a Civil War encampment, an ice cream social /antique car show, and holiday programming.
Within its rooms resided Maryland’s first elected governor with his daughter’s family who entertained cousin Louisa Johnson Adams, US First Lady. Political rallies occurred on the property; Civil War troops encamped; Margaret Hood would journey over to visit Uncle David Thomas; and in the 1930s visitors could get a meal of “Southern cooking” and lodging. In the 1960s the property would become one of the country’s first hands-on children’s history museums.
Programs reach all ages: Toddler Time, Play-time Mondays; First Friday Fun; Wee Historians for ages 4 & 5; Second Wednesdays for ages 5-10; Second Tuesdays for homeschoolers, and summer camps.
The property was not special except for its resident, Thomas Johnson–Maryland’s first elected governor–and his historical contributions. Johnson, a lawyer and George Washington’s friend, was part owner of the Catoctin Iron Furnace, a First Continental Congress delegate, nominator of Washington as Commanderin-chief of the continental army, state legislature member, and Supreme Court associate justice. So this historically important property caught the eye of Frederick County Parks and Recreation. Their committee for the preservation of Rose Hill Manor began to investigate acquisition, did so in 1969, and the museum officially opened on December 29, 1972. From its inception, Rose Hill has offered tours focusing on 19th century lifestyles. Those early county commissioners’ intentions are still museum principles: “to preserve for future generations a look into history so they may understand that our society has a tradition and that the past is an essential element of the future.” Its history spans from the 1740s-1950s. Evolving from a few exhibits in the manor, the museum includes a blacksmith shop, ice house, carriage museum, log cabin, farm/family building, and gardens in the 40+ acre park.
As tour guide and now program coordinator, I have been privileged to work with Frederick County Parks and Recreation for over thirty years. Little did I realize in 1979 that the home would capture my heart and soul with its ambience, friendliness, and opportunity to help bring history alive for “children of all ages.” And–this hasn’t just happened to me. The “grand old lady” beckons employees to stay and visitors to return again and again with family and friends. There is a welcoming spirit here at this gem of a park. You are invited to come experience it personally and view the 2011 museum season opening exhibit “Visitor Voices” highlighting visitors’ experiences with photos, memorabilia, or written accounts.
The Children’s Museum of Rose Hill Manor Park, operated by Frederick County Division of Parks & Recreation, is open April 1-October 31, Monday-Saturday, 10:00 AM-4:00 PM, Sunday 1:00-4:00 PM, and November weekends. Reservations: 301-600-1646 Programs: 301-600-2936 Information: 301-600-1650 Visit www.recreater.com or www.rosehillmuseum.com.
Vital to its success has been involvement with school systems so students can visit Rose Hill and gain a hands-on approach to history. FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE

HOUSING & REAL ESTATE
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR NEW TOWN BY: GINNY MICHAELS, GRI, CDPE, REMAX REALTY GROUP When you move to a new city or town, sometimes all the logistics, packing, and unpacking can be extremely stressful. Figuring out the ins and outs of your new town, getting children registered in new schools, utilities set up, and mail transferred can be mentally exhausting and overwhelming. If the details and unpacking are getting you down, stop for an afternoon or evening and take a break! Get away from the boxes in your living room and take in a local event to remind you of the good things about your new home town.
Each month there is a themed event in Downtown Frederick called “First Saturday.” During the first Saturday of each month, the merchants of Downtown Frederick hold gallery exhibits, food tastings, live entertainment, and other special events designed to showcase the best shops, art galleries, and restaurants of Downtown Frederick. The event spans a ten block area and takes place from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
If the details and unpacking are getting you down, stop for an afternoon or evening and take a break! Get away from the boxes in your living room and take in a local event to remind you of the good things about your new home town.
Some of the annual spring and summer events that bring people to Frederick year after year include the Frederick Keys baseball games and the “First Saturday” events in Downtown Frederick. The Frederick Keys are the local minor league baseball team that bring loads of entertainment to Frederick. Starting in April, there are usually three to five home games a week. Usually, after one or two games a week, there are fireworks displays that can be seen for miles. These have become a local tradition that people young and old look forward to. The Children’s Museum of Rose Hill Manor Park hosts a Spring Festival on April 30th and May 1st. The museum is located in Downtown Frederick, off of North Market Street. It will be a great event for children of all ages who can enjoy toys and games, craft-making, animals, hayrides, music and food, plus many more events as well. Another event going on the same weekend is the Bud Break Festival at the Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard. Enjoy winetasting, live music, food, and tours of the vineyard and winery while celebrating the buds breaking out from the grapevines after the long winter!
Another highly anticipated event in Frederick is the Fourth of July celebration in Baker Park, called Frederick’s 4th. Each year, a multitude of vendors gather in the heart of Frederick, Baker Park, to celebrate Independence Day. Thousands of people attend for games, pony rides, live entertainment, food, shopping, and much more. The evening is concluded with a spectacular fireworks display.
These are just a few of the many events that Frederick has to offer. Throughout the year, thousands of locals, as well as tourists enjoy the events and celebrations that this great city presents.

BUSINESS
3 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS ONLINE BY: JON-MIKEL BAILEY, WOOD STREET, INC. For local businesses, having a strong online presence is very important. With the tools available and a well thoughtout plan, even the smallest local business can experience success online. Here are three things you can do today to promote your business online:
One – Make Your Web Site a Priority
More often than not, your web site is going to be where you make your first impression. These days, your clients will start their search for YOU online! You want to make sure they find you and they like what they see.
Consider a redesign for your web site. Set up a blog for tips and updates and develop an editorial calendar. You want your site to be a resource for potential clients, not a liability. In order to be considered a trusted resource with some subject matter authority online, you want to write about what you know. If you are a plumber, write about plumbing maintenance tips for the average homeowner. If you own a clothing store, talk about the latest fashions. Just make sure the blog is part of your site so you know you own the content, for example: www.yoursite.com/blog and NOT yoursite.wordpress.com.
Two – Use Social Media Wisely
Yes, social media is huge right now. It is also hugely mis-used. Social media marketing is most effective when done with a strategic plan.
FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE
29
BUSINESS You don’t want a Facebook page just because everyone tells you to get one. You want a Facebook fan page because Facebook is where your clients are. Remember, these are just tools. They can be effective but only if you use them correctly. You may not need to be on Twitter or Facebook, but if your clients are there, you should be there. What are you going to say to them, share with them, and ask them to do? Your web site is the hub of your marketing wheel. Social media marketing components are the spokes leading to the hub. Don’t make your Facebook page your hub. It is not yours, it is Facebook’s. You want to own your web site.
Three – Don’t Forget the Search Engines
People still use search engines to find you. Search Engine Optimization (SEO), the process of optimizing your web site for maximum search engine visibility, is still very important. SEO is about content, structure, and code:
• Content - make sure you have a fair amount of content on your web site and that it contains the keywords and phrases that your clients will use to find you. • Structure - make sure it’s set up correctly and does not contain anything that might stop search engines from indexing your content. This could mean Flash, bad URLs, etc. Check with your webmaster and ask if Google is getting to your content. • Code for your site should contain keywords as well. This can occur in the Page Title, Heading Tags, ALT Attributes, etc. I hope these tips are useful. Good luck and happy marketing!

SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW!
SPRING IS TEST TIME IN LOCAL SCHOOLS BY: DR. LINDA D. BURGEE, SUPERINTENDENT, FREDERICK COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS PHOTOS COURTESY OF FREDERICK COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS SAT-10, MSA, CRES, HSA…What do the tests mean and what do they measure? To help prepare school-age children for success, learn about the exams that give students the chance to show what they know. Here is an overview of tests in local schools. Tests at FCPS
• Each spring, second graders take the multiple-choice Stanford Achievement Test (SAT-10) in reading, math, and environment (social studies/science) to help teachers gauge their readiness for third grade. This test also compares student scores to a sample group across the U.S.
• The Maryland School Assessment (MSA) meets federal No Child Left Behind requirements. Students in grades 3-8 take MSAs in reading and math, and in grades 5 and 8 they take the science MSA. The format includes multiple-choice and student-constructed responses. Parents receive individual, school, and state results. The biology, algebra, and English 10 High School Assessments (described later) serve as the 10th grade MSA measure. • The Criterion-Referenced Evaluation System (CRES) is an FCPS testing program to determine how students are mastering essential curriculum. Multiple-choice, essay, and short-answer results help us evaluate and improve student and school progress. Report cards include CRES results. FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE
33
CHILD CARE & EDUCATION
Tests give only a partial snapshot of a student’s knowledge, ability, or aptitude. • a good night’s rest • meals that are nourishing but not too heavy If children are anxious about test performance: • reassure them that some concern is normal and can help them do well • encourage a positive attitude that helps them decide to do their best and not blame themselves for what they don’t yet know • FCPS finals are CRES tests that comprise 20% of final course grades in: high school English, math, social studies, science, and art; 9th-grade physical education/health; and levels I and II foreign language courses. Scores appear on report cards. • High School Assessments (HSAs) are state exams that students take at the end of algebra/data analysis, biology, English 10, and government courses. To receive a diploma, students must pass each exam, earn a minimum combined score, or complete a state-approved academic validation project. • Advanced Placement (AP) tests are national College Board exams that FCPS strongly encourages students enrolled in AP classes to take. Many Frederick County students earn scores that qualify for college credit. • The SAT is a national college-entrance exam to measure critical reading, writing, and math skills. • The Preliminary SAT (PSAT) determines scholarship eligibility and is a practice exam for the SAT. FCPS provides the PSAT free to all 10th graders to assess their progress and prepare them for taking it again in 11th grade when good results can qualify students for scholarships. • The American College Test (ACT) is a national exam some colleges require. In addition to understanding types and purposes of tests, families can set their children on the path to good grades by assuring they have: • a regular time and place for homework • regular exercise 34
SPRING 2011
• teach them to take a few slow, deep breaths to relax • remind them that paying close attention to one question at a time will help them overcome anxiety, as their power of concentration kicks in. Tests give only a partial snapshot of a student’s knowledge, ability, or aptitude. For more about testing, contact your child’s teacher, visit www.fcps.org, www.pta.org, and www.HSAexam.org, or call 1-877-HSA-EXAMs.

CHILD CARE & EDUCATION
4 WORDS TO SUCCESS! BY: CELIA KIBLER, FUNFIT FAMILY FITNESS Here’s the best way to get your family feeling good and energized for school and work. Try my four favorite words… food, fitness, family, and fun.
FOOD!
Meal planning seems to be an added stress for a busy family. Here’s a way to get everyone involved and having fun. Stand up four paper lunch bags. Mark one “meats”, the 2nd “grains”, the 3rd “veggies”, and the 4th “fruit.” Do this for every meal. You can review the food pyramid first if needed. Have family members write down their three favorite foods in each category. Cut apart each list and put ideas into the appropriate bag. Then like a game, take turns having each member of the family pick out one item from each bag to create a 4-course meal. This continues until there are three meals for each day and a complete shopping list made. Add to the fun by having everyone find a related recipe to jazz up “their” meal of the day. Bring the kids along to shop, let them help you prepare, cook, set the table, and clean up too. Meals become a lot more fun when everyone joins in.
Nurturing your family and creating a positive, healthy environment is the most important thing you can do for your kids. FAMILY!
We all spend a lot of time apart, so when you are able, make an effort to do activities with your kids. Kids love to have parents take an active role in their lives. What better way to show you care than to create a healthy and active lifestyle for your kids to enjoy and duplicate when they have a family. Nurturing your family and creating a positive, healthy environment is the most important thing you can do for your kids. Through healthy eating and exercise, everyone will enjoy increased energy and self-confidence, have better body images, stronger bodies and minds, and smiles as they start their day.
FITNESS!
Fun for the whole family is hidden inside and outside your home. Do things as a family as often as you can. A family walk around the block can refresh and makes a great time for family discussions. Inside you can collect pieces in the house that can create an obstacle course like chairs, blanket, and tables. Be creative and create a course that you can go over, under, around, and through. Sign up for activities that the family can do together and benefit everyone physically. Try this: take a calendar and write down one family activity for each day. Have everyone make suggestions and make time to do them.
FUN!
Fun ties it all together. Laughter and love builds strength and binds each family member to the other through respect and a true joy of family time. It continually tells your kids that you believe in them and you believe in yourself. Keep up a positive environment and your family will follow suit. Laughter really is the best medicine, not to mention it can help build a great set of abs. Enjoy!

BREAK OUT YOUR LITTLE BLACK DRESS! PARTY FOR A GOOD CAUSE BY: MARYN FORNEY, COLONIAL JEWELERS PHOTO COURTESY: CRAIG SHIPP Colonial Jewelers is hosting its 2nd annual Breakfast at Tiffany’s event Wednesday, May 25th. Last year 275 women flaunted their little black dresses and flooded the downtown streets of Frederick. Restaurants were bombarded with women in black dresses, gloves, and tiaras. Local salons volunteered their time to create the classic Audrey Hepburn updo and rose-pink pout. Colonial is anticipating another great turnout this year.
party, and the full Holly Golightly look-alike costume (minus the little black dress). Local salons will donate their time this year to give makeovers and hair updos for those who purchase the VIP kits.
This vivacious girls’ night out is not your average dinner and movie combo. Each woman purchases a “Holly Golightly kit” which not only contains a ticket to watch the movie at The Weinberg Center, but also includes downtown restaurant discounts before and after the movie, entrance into Colonial Jewelers’ pre-movie cocktail
The pre-movie cocktail party at Colonial Jewelers will be held between 6:00 and 7:30 PM. Complimentary finger-foods and drinks will be served while women can socialize and browse the jewelry cases. Following the cocktail party there will be a red carpet walk to the private movie showing at The Weinberg Center.

SPRING 2011
Within each kit, women will find their essential accessories for the evening: black gloves, sunglasses, necklace, earrings, tiara, and cigarette holder.
Another exciting part of this year’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s event is the potential to have Frederick set a Guinness World Record! If this event brings enough women to dress as Holly Golightly, Frederick could make the Guinness World Records for “Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Film Characters”! Although this event is fun in and of itself, participants can enjoy the night even more knowing they are supporting the fight to cure breast cancer. All proceeds from this event will go to the Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund at Frederick Memorial Hospital (FMH). Jeff and Patty Hurwitz established the Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund at FMH in 1999 after Patty’s diagnosis of breast cancer. The goal of the fund has been to provide the most innovative options in early detection and treatment for breast cancer. To date the fund has raised nearly $700,000 and has funded some valuable enhancements to the Radiology and Breast Center departments. The fund’s most recent purchase is a device that enables the surgeon and radiologist to examine biopsy tissue in the operating room. In addition to other early detection equipment, the fund was instrumental in providing physical upgrades to the new Breast
Center to create a more comforting, healing environment. Every dollar donated to the fund is used for direct patient benefit; there are no administrative costs. So join in the festivities on May 25th and help a great cause. Giving back to the women of Frederick has never been more fun! To participate in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, purchase your kits at Colonial Jewelers starting April 15th. Please visit www.colonialjewelers.com for more details or call 301-663-9252.

senior living
SENIOR LIVING
PLANNING FOR YOUR RETIREMENT MOVE BY: DONNA BINNEY, CARING TRANSITIONS OF FREDERICK, HOWARD, AND CARROLL COUNTIES The anticipation of a retirement move to a new area is exciting and adventurous, but it can also be physically and emotionally overwhelming. At any age, home relocation is acknowledged by experts to be one of life’s greatest stressors. It is particularly challenging for older adults and their children, especially if the move entails leaving a lifetime’s collection of possessions, memories, and friendships. Simplifying life often involves planning for living in a smaller space–something we call RightSized Living.
What About the Rest?
Elicit the support of family members to help you determine what things they would like to have that are special to them. You can seek support from family, friends, or professionals, such as senior move managers to sort through your possessions. Working in each area of your home, tag items to pack, donate, sell, or throw away. A move manager is a certified professional that can also help you work with other professionals to plan estate sales, auctions, or consignments. It is more economical to sell these items prior to your move to avoid the costs of packing, moving, and storing items near your new home.
Define Your Needs
Visualizing your new home and space can help you determine what you will bring with you on your move. The cost of packing, moving, and storing items you will not use can be avoided by making key decisions before you move. Having a floor plan of your new home is essential. The first step is to identify all the things you must have for daily living. Most people would list a bed, table and chairs, a sofa, and a favorite easy chair among these. Some would also list the TV, stereo system, and computer and desk as essential. By placing these pieces of furniture in your new space plan, you can visualize what will fit, and make appropriate decisions.
Identify What You Love
Next, review the things you love–the things that define your life and who you are. These could be artwork, pictures, woodworking or camera gear, special quilts, and the like. Think ahead to your lifestyle. What will your new activities be? Will you garden, woodwork, golf, hike, or camp? These pastimes will help you decide what you need to bring to your new home. How much patio furniture will go? What about the collections of books and albums? Will there be space for those? Can you find ways to record these items digitally to reduce the space they require?
Settling In
Moving day is most stressful. Remember to keep medications, checkbooks, cell phones, and chargers close at hand, so that they are not packed away during the move. Consider using a service to unpack and organize your new home based on your floor plan, so you can focus on exploring your new surroundings!

TRANSPORTATION
ZOINKS!!! IT LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER MYSTERY SCOOB! BY: CHARLES GISCHLAR, MARYLAND STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION PHOTO COURTESY OF maryland STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION The State Highway Administration (SHA) is beginning a $50 million project to widen I-70 between Patrick Street and MD 85 (Buckeystown Pike) and to replace the two aging I-70 bridges over Patrick Street. Prior to the construction of this project, the planning and design process considered impacts to potential archaeological sites. Federal and state laws require that transportation agencies consider potential impacts to environmental, residential, commercial, and cultural resources. Last summer SHA’s Cultural Resource Section uncovered a hidden mystery near a limestone quarry southwest of the City of Frederick. Buried under several feet of fill, a “mystery building” was unearthed to the astonishment of SHA archaeologists; but they were left with one perplexing question–what was this building? “It’s basically a big stone box that was four feet below a pile of fill and artifacts deposited there between the 1930s and 1940s,” said SHA Chief Archaeologist, Dr. Julie Schablitsky. The structure is constructed of limestone and sand mortar and was white-washed at some point in time. At first, Dr. Schablitsky and her team thought the building was a furnace, smokehouse, or oven kiln due to the single, small iron door at the base. These were relatively commonplace in the early 19th century. However, there were no ashes, signs of burning, or soot deposits within the “mystery building.” To confirm their suspicions, there was no chimney.
“Mystery Building” uncovered near I-70 in Frederick
“mystery building” may be the base floor of an old spring house; a second story would have been built on top. Spring houses were constructed to both protect the spring and serve as a refrigerator. This is the same method used by today’s Amish in Southern Maryland and Pennsylvania to store milk, cheese, and other perishable items. While the springhouse hypothesis has not been confirmed, SHA’s team of time travelers believes that they are on the right track.
Upon subsequent investigation, using archival research, Dr. Schablitsky and her team currently believe the excavated

Comedy Pigs, left-to-right are: Anne Raugh, Thomas Scholtes, Laura Stark, Tres Dillon, and Paula Pitts
COMEDY PIGS TAKE THE STAGE BY: ANNE RAUGH, THE COMEDY PIGS; PHOTO by FRANKY ORR The Comedy Pigs have been making merry in and around Frederick town for 18 years as the inaugural troupe of the Maryland Ensemble Theatre (MET). They specialize in shortform improv–quick, unscripted scenes and theater games as seen in the Who’s Line Is It Anyway? British and American TV series– with a dash of scripted sketch comedy blended in. A staple in the MET schedule, barely a month goes by without the Pigs swarming the stage and making a bold assault on reality. The Pigs take the stage late-night following the MET main stage (8:00 PM) show on the second and third Saturday of each new
production. For those with earlier bedtimes, the Pigs are also featured on the main stage starting at 9:00 PM several times during the season, and their annual Anniversary Show is one of the hottest tickets in town every summer. Their typical late-night show begins with a set of improv games and scenes based on suggestions shouted from the audience, occasionally including audience volunteers. It ends with a set of free-form, rapid-fire improv scenes based on written suggestions collected from the audience during intermission. And of course during that intermission the audience has ready access to cheap

The 9:00 PM shows generally feature a set of original sketches, songs and videos, produced and performed by the Comedy Pigs and created brand spankin’ new for each show. In addition to providing a change of pace and an additional creative outlet
for the members of the troupe, these shows clearly demonstrate that the Pigs love their loyal fans so much they are willing to memorize lines for them. Greater love hath no improv comedian. The annual Comedy Pigs Anniversary show features audiencefavorite sketches culled from the entire Comedy Pigs opus performed by current and former company members, followed by an all-in improv jam. In addition to their MET performances, the Comedy Pigs travel abroad to perform at venues like the Carroll County Arts Center, regional improv festivals, and other public and private occasions. And they’ve also left traces in places like YouTube, because it looks like this whole inter-webs thing might be catching on! TAKE A RIDE WITH THE FREDERICK PEDALERS BY: WILLIAM SMITH, FREDERICK PEDALERS BICYCLE CLUB PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE FREDERICK PEDALERS BICYCLE CLUB The Frederick Pedalers Bicycle Club, founded in 1973, is an allvolunteer organization whose primary purpose is organizing friendly bicycle rides for cyclists of all abilities. The club also strives to promote safe bicycling, to defend and protect the rights of bicyclists, and to promote recognition of the bicycle as a vehicle used for pleasure, health, and transportation. The club sponsors year-round weekend rides, ranging from short social rides of 10-20 miles, to longer fast-paced workouts of up to 100 miles and more. Rides are scheduled on most weekends year-round, several weeknights during summer, and Wednesday evenings in the fall, winter, and spring (topped off by a visit to a local pizza shop). Each ride is led by a friendly, knowledgeable
70
SPRING 2011
member of the club. Bicyclists sixteen years of age and younger are welcome when accompanied by a responsible parent or guardian. The club participates in both cycling and non-cycling volunteer activities. Several times each year the club holds classes for lessexperienced road riders. Topics covered include cycling on roadways, riding safely in groups, properly shifting gears, the laws as they apply to bicyclists, bicycle maintenance including changing flat tires, and nutrition. For several years, the club members have volunteered at bike safety rodeos held at local schools. Three to four times per year club members pick up litter in conjunction with the Frederick County Adopt-A-Road program (now in our eighth year of participation).
The club newsletter, Gearing Up, is emailed to club members ten times per year and contains news and topics of interest to bicyclists, both local and national. The newsletter also includes stories, riding and/or mechanical tips, and other information concerning local cycling events, such as other rides (local and far-away), upcoming legislation concerning bicyclists, etc. The club web site (www.frederickpedalers.org) contains the ride schedule for the month, which lists the pace and description of the ride, the ride start location, and how to contact the ride leader for more information. The website also contains information about the club, such as its officers, ride routes (cue sheets), a calendar of events, newsletter archives, a photo gallery, and interesting Web links to other sites. In addition to regular monthly business/social meetings, the club’s annual meeting/election of officers is held every March. Members may also enjoy our Summer Picnic, Fall Banquet, and traditional Century/Metric Century rides (100/63 miles) every March and September. Non-members are welcome to come and try out a ride with the Frederick Pedalers. Check the club web site for a ride that
appeals to you (it is best to choose your first ride conservatively– slower than you would typically expect to ride). Arrive at the start fifteen minutes early with your bicycle in good working order. You should be prepared with a helmet, flat tire repair kit, bicycle pump (the small kind that fits on your bike), a water bottle to carry liquids, and a snack or money for a food stop at a local store if needed. For more information on the Frederick Pedalers Bicycle Club see www.frederickpedalers.org.

BURKITTSVILLE Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Burkittsville is a well preserved, virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Churches, houses, and trade establishments along Main Street were bordered at the rear by fields surrounding the town. The mountains rose to the west. To this day, the town retains those early visual characteristics. Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam. The town’s inhabitants fled for safety to nearby villages. Today, many of Burkittsville’s residents commute to jobs in the nearby metropolitan areas, but the town maintains a strong sense of community through its many services, social activities, special events, and town meetings.

Middletown Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Middletown is a small, rural community steeped in American history. It is located in the beautiful Middletown Valley that stretches between the Catoctin Mountains on the east and South Mountain on the west. A young Lieutenant George Washington, while surveying the South Mountain area, reported that the valley to the east was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Middletown continues to evolve from a settlement of farmers and ranchers to one of tradesmen, craftsmen, businessmen, clergymen, commuters, and retired folk—without losing its agricultural roots. From the stately old Victorian-style homes and soaring church steeples to the rustic dairy farms and modern housing developments, residents find in Middletown a refuge where they can enjoy small-town life as it used to be.

Myersville
Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Myersville is strategically located halfway between Frederick and Hagerstown, with convenient access from Interstate 70 to the south and US Route 40 to the north, yet nicely buffered from both by a mile of local road. The outstanding location and beautiful, hilly terrain combined to make the town an attractive location for residential development during the last decades of the 20th century. Today, Myersville takes care to ensure by ordinance and zoning control that its attractive location is matched by attractive development. The Canada Hill development and three other developments built in the 1990s—Ashley Hills, Meadowridge, and Terraces of South Mountain— exemplify the same standards of appearance set by the town. Walkersville Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Walkersville is a combination of two villages that were settled by German immigrants in the mid 1700s and early 1800s. By the late 1800s, the villages of Georgetown and Walkersville had grown so intertwined that it made sense to combine them into one entity, which was named Walkersville. Today, Walkersville aggressively pursues fiscal responsibility, recycling projects, and innovation. In 1995, it was credited with having the first State Police bicycle patrol in the nation. There are four schools, residential developments, a shopping center, several businesses and institutions, and numerous restaurants in the town. Walkersville has managed a rapid population growth wisely, enabling it to maintain a friendly, small-town atmosphere. Burgess

Woodsboro Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. After the Civil War, the town developed some notoriety as a train stop that offered exceptional accommodations and relaxing pursuits. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town. There are small commercial activities and service providers within the town itself. Burgess
