Wondering About Wandering

A recent episode of the NBC television series Parenthood focused on the Braverman family searching the city for their preteen son, Max, who had left the family home unannounced. What made his unsupervised exodus particularly worrisome for the family was that Max has Asperger’s syndrome, a developmental disability categorized as an autism spectrum disorder. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability, affecting an estimated one in every 110 births. Many people with autism can be characterized as having impaired social interactions and deficits in expressive and receptive communication skills. A lack of social judgment can make it difficult for a child with autism to understand danger or to know who to go to in a situation in which he or she has wandered away from a trustworthy adult.

Frederick County is taking a proactive approach to supporting the safety of people with autism and other disabilities. The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office participates in the Project Lifesaver program. Project Lifesaver International provides rapid response to quickly locate missing program participants. Each person enrolled in Project Lifesaver wears a small transmitter, which transmits a signal on a set frequency. When needed, the transmitter can be tracked using specialized equipment located at the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office and Brunswick and Thurmont Police Departments. Specially trained Frederick County law enforcement and Community Assistance Patrol personnel use the equipment to locate the missing person. FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE

IN THE COMMUNITY “I am so grateful that the Frederick County Sheriff’s Department has Project Lifesaver,” says Shawna Capotosto, president of the Frederick County chapter of the Autism Society of America. “For many parents who have a child on the autism spectrum [who] wanders, Project Lifesaver offers peace of mind.” According to the organization’s website, Project Lifesaver has performed 2,493 searches throughout the world in the last 11 years. No serious injuries or fatalities were ever reported. In addition to supporting communities with technology, Project Lifesaver International provides outreach programs to educate community members about the issue of wandering, trains rescuers on effective communication practices, and works toward developing public policies related to emergency response. Proactive family planning also aids in quick response to locate a missing person. Family members, places of worship, camps, and other organizations can receive materials from resources such as the Autism Wandering Awareness Alerts Response and Education (AWAARE) Collaboration to create a Family Wandering Emergency Plan. This document is intended to be a quick reference tool in the event of an emergency. Developing the plan includes identifying people who will commit to searching for a child in the event of an emergency, creating a list of places a child likes to visit, and documenting critical information about the child that can be distributed to local law enforcement. Additional resources can be customized to aid child safety. Families might choose a necklace or bracelet that can be a quick reference to an adult who is trying to assist a lost child. Temporary tattoos with contact information can be designed and worn by a child when he or she is visiting a new and unfamiliar environment such as an amusement park, beach or shopping area. Safety aids can also incorporate style. Families can order customized silicone wristbands in a child’s favorite color and with his or her initials and a contact phone number. At the conclusion of the Parenthood episode, law enforcement located Max and reunited him with his family. While a happy ending is expected at the end of a television show, this might not always be the conclusion in real life. However, proactive planning and community awareness can greatly increase the chances of a wandering child being quickly found and unharmed. The Arc of Frederick County can help families and the community to promote the safety of children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. Support coordinators from The

Arc can connect families to a variety of resources and potential funding sources. The Arc also offers customized training on how to support the inclusion of people with disabilities in all areas of life, such as school, workplace, summer camps and recreational activities. But in addition to the area’s striking topography and large-scale growing endeavors, individuals and families have also cultivated the land on a smaller scale, both for enjoyment and sustenance. Today, visitors can tour three historic gardens that not only inspire the imagination with their beauty, but provide a window to the past on how gardens were an essential part of life. This spring, tour one of Frederick County’s historic gardens to improve your gardening skills, learn about the past, and simply enjoy the scenery.

Rose Hill Manor

Rose Hill Manor—the retirement home of Thomas Johnson, Maryland’s first elected governor—serves as a hands-on history museum for children of all ages. The property features a manor house, icehouse, log cabin, blacksmith shop, carriage collection and two barns. It also features a large traditional garden that is used during tours and for educational purposes. Here, visitors learn not just about the role of gardens in the 18th and 19th centuries, but also about cooking techniques, food sources, and food preparation in early America. Located in downtown Frederick, the Museum of Frederick County History has a heritage garden on site. It features elegant period flower gardens bordered by handsome brick paths, an open grass area and a trellised arbor. The facility also includes a kitchen garden surrounded by picket and rustic locust fencing, as well as masonry benches. Built around 1758, Schifferstadt Architectural Museum is one of the oldest and most historic buildings in the City of Frederick and among the best examples of early colonial German architecture in the country. On the grounds of this building is a large garden in the spot where the house’s original garden is believed to be located. Everything grown in the garden would have been familiar to early German settlers. Herbs, roots, traditional medicines, vegetables and vines all are grown there. It is enclosed by a picket fence and divided into four quadrants.

Each quadrant contains plants that make good companions, often because they help each other repel pests. People Giving Back

Communities that have a strong foundation of volunteerism and residents helping each other are the strongest and most successful. By acknowledging individuals who give their valuable time to support and give back to the community, whether in big or small ways, we hope we can show that their efforts matter. Joanne Baum, a longtime resident of Frederick County, is one of these people who gives her time in spite of a full life and busy schedule. We asked her some questions about where she spends her time in our community. Here is what she answered:

What organizations do you currently volunteer with?

Currently I am doing a lot of volunteer things with my church, Evangelical Lutheran, and with the Daughters of the American Revolution. Why did you choose those organizations?

Church for me is very social. It is where I connect with friends and family. In a large church, it takes many hands to keep things vibrant. I enjoy meeting new people, sharing and helping others.

The DAR is more because of my love of history. My great aunt was very involved, and I really admired her. Frederick is full of historyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;both my family history and the exciting role Frederick has played in our nation. I want to make sure we preserve and celebrate what is so special here. Have you always volunteered? Or is this something you chose to do in your retirement?

I have always volunteered. Where I spend my time has changed over the years. When my children were young, I volunteered at their schools, 4-H and Scouts.

IN THE COMMUNITY Why do you feel it is important to volunteer?

I think everyone has something to share, some way to give back to our community. I think it is what makes Frederick a special place. So many people here are willing to put their time, money and talent to work to support each other and our community. What do you feel you get back from giving your time?

All the things people would say. It is fulfilling, and I get more than I give. I enjoy the excitement of new challenges and meeting new people. It keeps life exciting. What is the hardest thing you’ve had to do in your capacity as a volunteer?

Dealing with historic preservationists and government entities. I had no experience dealing with these people ever before in my life. I don’t mind public speaking, but it sure is a different matter when not everyone is on your side of a topic. What is the best thing that has ever happened to you as a volunteer?

Many of the projects I have worked on have expanded my thoughts and helped me tackle problems from different angles. If you had the power to do anything you wanted for your organization or for the people you serve, what would you do and why?

There is no one big thing… It is all the little things we do that count. Don’t just do one little thing and think, “Wow, I helped.” In order to make an impact you need to stick to it. I think it is the continued efforts of many people that make a difference in our community.

Family History: Link to the Past, Bridge to the Future By: Rebecca Crago, The Historical Society of Frederick County, Inc. In the first article in this series, you learned to start building your family tree with your own prior knowledge, then to move to your parents, grandparents, and any other relatives who might give you information about your ancestors. After you examine your personal resources, you might consider checking census records as a next step. The text of a census is released to the public after 72 years, so this April marks the full release of the 1940 census. However, this census is not yet indexed, and you must know the enumeration district where your relative lived to locate him or her.

Before the first federal census in 1790, Maryland conducted two special censuses, in 1776 and 1778, which can be found at the Historical Society of Frederick County’s (HSFC) Frederick County Archives and Research Center. An important thing to remember when checking census records is that before 1850 only “heads of households” are listed by name. The 1850 census was the first that tracked all free inhabitants. The 1890 census almost completely burned in a fire, but a special index of Maryland Civil War veterans still exists.

FREDERICK COUNTY HISTORY Ancestry.com is another great source for census records. However, it’s important not to get too carried away on the site. You must remember that anyone with an account can create a family tree, so if the only record of a potential ancestor is from an Ancestry. com tree, you need to cross-check the information with primary records. You can use the library edition of Ancestry.com and other genealogical databases, such as Heritagequest.com, at the C. Burr Artz Public Library in Frederick with your library card. When you’ve established the existence of an ancestor through census records, you’ll want to know more about him or her. In genealogy, vital records of a person include details about that person’s birth, baptism, marriage (and divorce), death and burial. There are several types of records that include vital statistics, and most can be found in church and court archives. The State of Maryland did not start issuing birth and death certificates until 1898. Frederick County only issued them from 1865 to 1873. These are available at the Frederick County Courthouse. State-issued certificates can be requested through the Maryland Department of Mental Health and Hygiene’s Division of Vital Records and Statistics. Aside from these official records, the best documentation for births, baptisms and deaths comes from church records.

to marry before a congregation. Original licenses from 17781865 were lost, but an index to those marriages can be found at the Frederick County courthouse. The index was published by genealogist Margaret E. Myers and is also available at the HSFC Research Center. It tells who was married and when. The original licenses from 1866-1886 were also lost, but abstracts can be found at the courthouse. These records give the date of marriage, names, place, name of marrying official, age, color, residence, condition (bachelor, widow, etc.), occupation and date when the marriage was recorded. All the same information can be found on actual licenses, which are at the courthouse for marriages that occurred between 1887 and the present. Divorce information can be found in equity records at the courthouse. Now that you know the methodology for beginning genealogical research, look for the third article in this four-part series for advice on continuing to document your ancestry using vital and surrogate records, immigration records and more resources available at the HSFC’s Research Center. The Historical Society of Frederick County Archives and Research Center is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Original church records can usually be found by contacting the church itself, but several local pastoral records have been translated from Latin and German, transcribed and published. The HSFC Research Center holds many of these titles, including records from the Evangelical Lutheran and German Reformed Churches, as well as from Brethren, Methodist, Episcopal, Catholic and Quaker churches. Aside from state, county and church records, death and burial records can be found from other sources, such as Names in Stone: 75,000 Cemetery Inscriptions from Frederick County Cemeteries by J. Holdcraft. While this is a good source to locate where an ancestor was buried, Holdcraft did not include Frederick County’s African American cemeteries. That project is currently in progress by local genealogist Larry Moore. Another published source is Frederick’s Other City: Mount Olivet Cemetery by Larry Bishop. This book lists notable persons buried at Mount Olivet— as well as Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War I and II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans—and those who were exhumed and reinterred in national cemeteries. Marriage licenses were not required in Maryland until 1778. Until that time, most people were married using traditional banns, through a publication or pronouncement of the intention

Frederick WORKS! One Job at a Time By: Julie Anderson, Frederick County Workforce Services Across the country—in Atlanta, Georgia; Greensboro, North Carolina; and Washington, D.C.—campaigns are underway to encourage businesses to grow their workforces and help boost the economy. Such a campaign has now come to Frederick. The rationale behind this evolving movement is: • If each business in our area were to hire just one person this year, the economic impact would be enormous. • Even if only a small portion of our businesses hired just one person this year, there would still be a significant and measurable impact on the local economy. (Economists assert that, on average, each new employee added to the workforce increases the U.S. GDP by $100,000.) • At the very least, by raising awareness that employers ARE hiring, we can create a shift in confidence — a positive momentum — that can begin to change the local economy and business environment for the better. (Increased consumer and investor confidence = increased spending and capital investment.) • Local employers who hire just one person are a part of the solution to reduce unemployment and our national deficit.

With support from its business-led Workforce Development Board, Frederick County Workforce Services (FCWS) decided to formally implement a localized version of this concept on behalf of Frederick County. As a result, the Frederick WORKS! One Job at a Time initiative was born. This initiative represents a collaborative effort to get Frederick County citizens back to work, by encouraging businesses in our county to create and/or fill at least one new job in 2012. What partners are involved in this initiative? Frederick WORKS! One Job at a Time is led by FCWS and the Frederick County Workforce Development Board, in partnership with the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, City of Frederick Department of Economic Development, and Frederick County Office of Economic Development. The program is also championed by the Mayor’s Office and the Board of County Commissioners. What is the goal of this initiative? The goal of Frederick WORKS! One Job at a Time is to encourage 1,000 of Frederick County’s approximately 8,500 employers to hire at least one person in 2012.

Celebrating a Century By: Ric Adams, Chamber President & CEO On April 22, 1912, President William Howard Taft held a Conference of Commercial Associations and challenged the 700 delegates to create a new national organization that would represent commerce and industry. The conference resulted in the creation of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States.

Over the past 100 years, the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce has been instrumental in the economic and cultural development of our community. This long legacy of achievement would not be possible without the support and leadership of hundreds of member businesses and thousands of professionals.

Four delegates who attended the event came from the Frederick County Board of Trade and were inspired to take action. The next day, April 23, the Board of Trade wired an application and became the first chartered Chamber in the United States.

On May 21, 2012, the Chamber will celebrate a century of success with its 100th Anniversary Gala at the National Cancer Instituteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Advanced Technology Research Facility. This elegant affair will be the perfect opportunity to look back over the last century, but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll also share our plans for supporting the business community over the next 100 years.

Today, Frederick County Chamber of Commerce members include more than 1,000 organizations, representing over 35,000 local jobs in a wide variety of industries: retail, manufacturing, healthcare, skilled trades, service and hospitality, technology, government, nonprofit, and education. FCPS Launches Highly Able Learner Program By: Dr. Theresa R. Alban, Superintendent, Frederick County Public Schools The Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) system is launching a new program for highly able learners in grades 6-8. Its purpose is to better meet middle school studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; needs for academic rigor and challenge in language arts, math, science and social studies. In the coming 2012-13 school year, all FCPS middle schools will provide Highly Able Learner (HAL) cluster groups in sixth grade. During the following 2013-14 school year, middle schools will offer the program for sixth and seventh grades, and during the 2014-15 school year, FCPS will fully implement the program to include grades 6-8.

The HAL program uses an instructional delivery model based on research findings that highly able learners achieve better when grouped together. It allows teachers to plan and provide challenging learning opportunities that set a more rapid pace for this group of students. Students may be identified as highly able in one or up to all four of the core content areas. Schools will group students in clusters from three to 10 in honors language arts and math classes. They will also place students identified as highly able in science and/or social studies together in those classes. FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE

CHILD CARE & EDUCATION Specialized training in instructional strategies for teachers serving highly able learners is taking place this spring. Principals, assistant principals and curriculum leaders will also participate in professional development. FCPS field-tested a highly able learner program at Walkersville and West Frederick middle schools prior to adopting the new approach for all FCPS middle schools. Work at those schools was invaluable in leading the steering committee to recommend a program suitable for all middle schools in the county. Students at the field test schools will complete the existing program in grades 7 and 8, with sixth graders beginning the new program in 2012-13. Any student placed in a highly able cluster must be able to learn material at advanced rates and levels of understanding, and must have demonstrated high ability through performance on a variety of specific data measures listed at www.fcps.org/ highlyablelearner. Participants may also have been identified through the FCPS elementary magnet program for gifted and talented students.

An articulation committee at each middle school determines whether placement in one or more highly able learner clusters is appropriate. Schools sent parents of children identified for such placement a letter by April 1. Parents of a child who was not selected may write to the middle school principal to appeal the decision. Parents whose children are enrolled in a highly able learner cluster should expect the students to follow the essential FCPS curriculum with an emphasis on depth and complexity based on studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; abilities and interests. They should also expect homework to require advanced analytical thinking, creative problem solving, research and time-management skills. The school systemâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s instructional director of middle schools Tracey Lucas, 301-696-6810, and Gifted and Talented Programs Coordinator Meg Lee, 301-696-6891, can provide additional information.

Another result of this growth, though, is need, and often, that need calls for more and a greater variety of medical professionals, for space to heal, for high-quality healthcare in an area that is increasingly high-traffic and high-density. As more and more Frederick County residents choose to stay right here close to home for their health care needs, FMH needs to grow more than our services and programs—we need to expand our capacity as well. A renovation project adding 20 new patient rooms to the hospital’s main campus is nearly complete. Construction crews are nearly finished moving our helipad from ground level to the roof of the hospital, which will make way for our planned parking garage expansion. Out in the community, FMH has expanded the services available in both Urbana and on the southern side of Frederick City. Our newest outpatient facility, FMH Urbana, offers quick access to x-rays, mammograms and laboratory testing. Immediate Care services—to take care of everything from strains and sprains to sports physicals and travel immunizations—opened in December.

FMH Crestwood, located just south of Frederick, is home to a wide range of imaging services, as well as comprehensive rehabilitation and laboratory services. FMH Crestwood is also home to the FMH Women’s Center, which features an entire wing dedicated to women’s imaging as well as the Women’s Center for Breast Care. As FMH enters its 110th year, we look back and see how far we’ve come since opening our doors. In fiscal year 2011, more than 22,000 patients were admitted to the hospital for in-patient care, and more than 75,000 were treated in our Emergency Department. That’s a long way from our one-bed “Accident Room” set aside in the early 1900s. Since then, FMH has been open and ready to, in the words of our founder, Emma Smith, “care for the sick, comfort the injured and provide peace of mind to all who live in a town called Frederick.”

Spring Into physical Fitness By Stephanie Quinn Human bodies are beautiful machines that require judicious use as they age. Whatever one’s age, staying active is a prerequisite for prolonged health. Exercise helps people of all ages to maintain a healthy weight, reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and type two diabetes, strengthens bones and muscles, improves mental health and mood, heightens the ease of daily activities, and prevents falls. In addition, ensuring that your body is in top condition makes it easier to lead a rich and rewarding life, replete with the joys of friendship, extended family and grandparenthood, travel, hobbies, and dabbling in new activities with social groups that you may never have dreamed that you would try. Exercise can involve discomfort, but the good news is that there are a multitude of simple, pleasurable ways to train oneself to be active that may not even involve extra expenditures or much effort beyond one’s usual daily activities. Taking a brisk, lingering walk around the neighborhood while the Bradford pears are in bloom, or later in the season as the crickets start to chirp in the evenings, is a great way to exercise. Walk your dog as often as your canine friend and your schedule will have it. Better yet, invite a friend or recruit a family member and make a habit of walking and talking together. Dust off your bike, and take it for a spin. Give your home a thorough spring cleaning— vacuuming, mopping, polishing furniture, moving those boxes out of the basement, and dancing as you dust to your favorite record or the radio all count as meaningful physical activity. Cultivate a hobby that promotes activity. Plant a garden and commit to working in it as often as you are able; you will gently build your strength and stamina, and your yard will be like an Eden. Frederick County and the surrounding region play host to stunning parks where individuals at any fitness level can find a suitable path to tread. Watch the ducks while circling Culler Lake at Baker Park in Frederick, stroll around the ruins of a once-bustling mill community on Virginius Island at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park less than an hour west in West Virginia, or walk along the mighty Potomac River at any point on the C&O Canal towpath, which runs all the way to

Washington, D.C. Get passionate about bird-watching, hiking, or photography, and go out to the places where you can practice your passion. Those journeys contribute to being active and healthy as surely as frequent trips to the gym. Also remember that senior citizens are often welcomed to join gyms and health clubs at a reduced membership rate. Gentle yoga, aquatics, low-impact aerobics, or even regular use of a stationary bike build strength, flexibility, and heart health without overtaxing the joints or heart. If you aren’t sure what type of physical activity is appropriate for you, consult your doctor or even the staff at a gym that you are considering joining. The staff at the YMCA in Frederick, for example, are very happy to help members who aren’t familiar with cardio or weight training equipment, or who would like guidance about advisable workout plans. Also, don’t forget to stretch! Spring is an ideal time to start a personal project of increased activity. If you’ve fallen out of shape or aren’t sure how to begin, remember that it’s never too late to start working toward a healthy regimen of exercise, and also that the first step is often the most difficult. The world is waking up with spring. Your first step to fitness can literally be a first step out your door into a wonderful world in bloom.

Hit the Trail at Ballenger Creek By: Bob Hicks, Assistant Director, Frederick County Division of Parks and Recreation The Frederick County Division of Parks and Recreation is currently overseeing the construction of the Kingsbrook Section of the Ballenger Creek Trail. This section of trail will connect Kingsbrook Drive, near Ballenger Creek Elementary School, to the end of Advisors Court, where a developer has made improvements to the road and provided a small parking area. Along with an eight or ten foot wide asphalt or concrete trail surface, this section of trail development will provide other amenities, including landscaping, fencing, bicycle rack, bench and signage. The approximate length of this section of trail is 0.8 miles. This section of trail development also includes a trail segment that will ultimately connect to a future developer-built section of trail as part of the Ballenger Run housing development. Construction began on the Kingsbrook Section of the Ballenger Creek Trail on September 14, 2011, and is expected to be completed by May of this year. In June 2008, the State of Maryland awarded Frederick County a Transportation Enhancement Program (TEP) grant, which is funding 80 percent of the construction costs for this project. The overall goal of the Ballenger Creek Trail is not only to provide recreational opportunities for all Frederick County citizens, but also to establish an off-road connection between the residential and business communities in the Ballenger Creek area. The Kingsbrook Section is one of seven sections that will ultimately make up the entire length of the Ballenger Creek Trail. Once all sections of the trail are completed, the trail will be approximately five miles in length and will connect Ballenger Creek Park to the Monocacy River. The only section of the Ballenger Creek Trail that has been completed to date is Westview South. This section of trail, which is less than one mile long, was constructed by a developer and is located on the north and south side of Executive Way, following the Ballenger Creek corridor. There are five remaining sections that will eventually be built in order to complete the Ballenger Creek Trail. Two of these sections will be completed by a developer, while the other three sections will be developed by Frederick County. One of

the Frederick County sections, the Advisors Court Section, is scheduled to begin the design phase in the next few months. The Advisors Court Section will be a very important link in the Ballenger Creek Trail, because it will connect the Kingsbrook Section, currently under construction, with the completed Westview South Section. Get ready to lace up on May 19, as Brunswick Crossing hosts the 5K Twilight Valley Trail Run to save the WB Tower. In celebration of the opening of Brunswick Crossing’s Valley Trail, runners of all ages are invited to run a 5K trail race/walk and one-mile kids’ fun run on Saturday, May 19, beginning at 6 p.m. The fun begins with a kids’ one-mile fun run in the Brunswick Crossing community, starting and ending at the community’s Hope Farm Park. Prizes will be awarded for all participants. The timed 5K race is a fun paved trail course on Brunswick Crossing’s Valley Trail, meandering through almost 100 acres of stream valley forest conservation area. Awards will be given to the top three male and female overall finishers, and to the top three male and female finishers in each 10-year age group. A fun event for the whole family, the 5K race features live music in Hope Farm Park, refreshments, a moonbounce, and other family activities for participants and visitors. About the WB

The West Brunswick Tower, which closed in October 2011, was the last railroad tower operating in Maryland. The B&O Railroad once had many such towers, but technology waits for no one. Today, regional and central operating centers remotely control dozens of interlockings at a time through computer systems and train tracking monitors, leaving interlocking towers like WB obsolete. An interlocking tower is a structure used to control signals and the alignment of switch tracks on the railroad. Commonly located where multiple railroad lines intersected, some like WB were used in areas where main line and train yard tracks joined together. Most of these towers have ‘mechanical’ switch systems, using large levers connected to a series of moving rods to make the needed adjustments. WB Tower used a less common mechanism, in which small, knob-like levers at a desk control an air pressure system. Various generations of computer-based systems now provide control and communications options; however, the WB knob array is still in place.

Mangia e Bevi Photos & Article By: Melissa Howes-Vitek Approaching its fifth anniversary in Urbana, Mangia e Bevi has risen to the challenge of providing delicious, authentic Italian cuisine to the food lovers of Frederick County. The last five years have shown that things just keep getting better. Mangia e Bevi, translated as “eat and drink,” encourages just that. A sizeable menu features some of the standards one would expect, but also boasts some less familiar yet interesting dishes. Our lunch visit had us eager and hungry to try a variety of chef and owner Vito Cinquepalmi’s handiwork. Once we polished off a basket of the warm, yummy, homemade bread, my half Sicilian husband and I started with the Bada Bing Shrimp and the Calamari Fritti. The Bada Bing was described as tender shrimp in a creamy spicy sauce, so we were expecting a bit more heat. Although slightly overcooked, it was a nice start to the meal. Now the calamari. I’m REALLY fussy about its usual texture and typically avoid it, but this was cooked to perfection. It was divine! We then chose our entrees. My husband almost always orders a basic spaghetti and meat sauce as his barometer for a new restaurant. This time he ordered the Trenette Bolognese, and I ordered the Meat Pizza Roll. While again we both prefer a bit more seasoning, and the plating wasn’t particularly impressive, the homemade noodles and dough made both dishes a cut above the usual.

The dessert course certainly redeemed Mangia e Bevi in the plating department! We ordered both the Profiteroles and the Cannoli Siciliana, and they came to the table dressed to the nines. Anyone who knows me knows that I decide what I’m going to order for my meal only AFTER I’ve decided on dessert. Neither disappointed. The vanilla and chocolate cream of the Profiteroles was rich with just the right sweetness. The portion was generous, so I was delighted to have some to take home for a midnight snack. The Cannoli, which are made in house, were probably the best I’ve had. They were rich and creamy as one would expect, but there was a light citrus note...lime maybe...that was a fantastic pairing to the cream. The chef was light-handed with the chocolate chips (which would normally disappoint me) but in this case, it worked beautifully. We put service pretty high on the expectation list, and we were delighted that our server, Diana, was friendly, helpful, and kept our glasses full. Even though we’d settled the check, my husband and I lingered awhile over espresso. The staff continued to make us feel welcome, never making us feel rushed as if they needed the table, in spite of the crowds gathering at the entrance. BURKITTSVILLE Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Burkittsville is a well preserved, virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Churches, houses, and trade establishments along Main Street were bordered at the rear by fields surrounding the town. The mountains rose to the west. To this day, the town retains those early visual characteristics. Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam. The town’s inhabitants fled for safety to nearby villages. Today, many of Burkittsville’s residents commute to jobs in the nearby metropolitan areas, but the town maintains a strong sense of community through its many services, social activities, special events, and town meetings.

Thurmont Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Thurmont is a small city in northern Frederick County established in 1751. It is known as the “Gateway to the Catoctin Mountains” where Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park are located. There are three covered bridges nearby: Loy’s Station Bridge, Roddy Road Bridge, and Utica Mills Bridge. Catoctin Iron Furnace and forge, built during the Revolutionary War, is just down the road. Frederick is about 15 miles south and Gettysburg is 20 miles north. Baltimore and Washington, DC are each about 60 miles away. The President’s retreat, Camp David, is also nearby. Thurmont is proud to have been designated a “Main Street Maryland Community.”

By the late 1800s, the villages of Georgetown and Walkersville had grown so intertwined that it made sense to combine them into one entity, which was named Walkersville. Woodsboro Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. After the Civil War, the town developed some notoriety as a train stop that offered exceptional accommodations and relaxing pursuits. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town.
