Happy Spring, Frederick! Though Frederick County is truly beautiful no matter the time of year, springtime is especially gorgeous around these parts. As nature comes alive in vibrant color, a drive or walk through your favorite Frederick County town is in order. While the City of Frederick’s Baker Park is always a good bet for finding a variety of colorful trees and flowers and wonderful walking and biking trails, don’t rule out a trip further south, to the historic City of Brunswick. Brunswick is truly a city in transition from its storied railroad past to its promising future, with many new residents and a burgeoning downtown business scene. Check out our feature on the City of Brunswick, starting on Page 60. This feature is the first of many to come in each edition of The Frederick County Guide. In every issue, we will focus on a different town in Frederick County, discussing the many wonderful details that makes each locale unique. Of course, we also have all of our other regular sections, guiding readers through Education, History, Seniors, Child and Youth Activities, Health and more! Have fun reading this issue, and get out there to explore Frederick County during the best season of the year!

Sheriff’s Office Invites COMMUNITY SUPPORT According to its mission statement, The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office is a full service law enforcement agency; an arm of the court, and a keeper of offenders. In this regard it exists to serve all the people within Frederick County with respect, fairness, and compassion. While the Sheriff's Office is committed to the prevention of crime; the protection of life and property; the preservation of peace and order; the enforcement of laws and ordinances; the safeguarding of constitutional guarantees; and safekeeping of prisoners, its foundation is community service, with goals to enhance the quality of life, investigating problems as well as incidents, seeking solutions and fostering a sense of security in communities and individuals.
Through the CAP program, the sheriff’s office aims to not only improve the overall quality of life in the community, but also broaden the communications network along with bringing in new skills and expertise to the sheriff's office.
On its website, the sheriff’s office states that its officers understand that they are a part of one of the few agencies of government that never closes, and therefore, may be called upon to perform many different tasks for the community. “We will always strive to professionally and enthusiastically respond to the community's needs,” it states.
• Business and residential checks
Some of the many ways the sheriff’s office works to serve its mission of community policing include:
• Fingerprinting
Citizens Advisory Committee
• Crime prevention and Neighborhood Watch programs
The advisory committee was established to provide the Sheriff's Office a forum for police-community interaction and to address public safety and related issues in order to further enhance the quality of life in our community.
Duties and responsibilities of members of the CAP program include: • Traffic direction and control
• Securing crime scenes and searches • Parade and funeral escorts
• Educational presentations based on skills and expertise
• Patrol checks
+
Community Assistance Patrol (CAP)
GET INVOLVED
It is the goal of the Sheriff's Office to enlist the voluntary services of citizens to improve the efficiency and productivity of the office. This program is an effort to provide non-law enforcement services via community involvement thus allowing certified deputies more time to respond to calls that require law enforcement.
Citizen involvement is a must if Community Policing is to be successful. To become involved with improving the quality of life in your neighborhood, contact the Frederick County Sheriff's Office or your local police department.
Volunteering in law enforcement is expanding. As a law enforcement agency, the sheriff’s office asks for residents’ support in combating and deterring crime through community involvement, keeping in line with its Community Policing philosophy, whereas the police and community join together as partners and work as a team.

Barbara Fritchie, LEGENDARY LADY
BY MARY BOSWELL, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, HERITAGE FREDERICK
To historians and history buffs, Barbara Fritchie (sometimes spelled Frietchie) is Frederick’s leading legendary lady.
A souvenir card, copyrighted in April 18, 1885 by Markens & Bielfield, depicts Barbara Fritchie, who died in December 1862.
Scholars say she “put Frederick on the map.” Most of her 96 years were uneventful, but in adulthood she was, in many ways, ahead of her time. She was born in 1766 in Lancaster, Pa. Her parents had emigrated from Dildendorff, Naussau, Germany 12 years earlier. Before she was 10 years old, she and her family moved to Frederick. In 1806, at the age of 40, she married a much younger man, John Casper Fritchie (1780–1849). She was well read and owned an impressive collection of books, including “Interesting Anecdotes of the Heroic Conduct of Women,” published in Baltimore in 1804, two years before her marriage. International fame was bestowed upon Fritchie after she died in 1862, when a poem about her was published in the “Atlantic Monthly” the following year. Written by John Greenleaf Whittier, the poem focuses on an incident in which she is said to have confronted Confederate troops when they marched through Frederick during the Civil War. According to the poem, Confederate soldiers shot at the Union flag that she had posted outside her attic window. In response, she grabbed the flag and said, “Shoot if you must this old gray head, but spare your country’s flag.” After the poem was published, her fame went “viral.” Today, critics question the validity of the story, but the poem immediately resulted in a host of popular materials and retail opportunities. Over the years, a motorcycle race, a horse race and a restaurant have been named after her. The poem also inspired a song, a play, an operetta, three silent films, and a brand of candy. In 1943, on his way to see President Franklin D. Roosevelt at what is now Camp David, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill recited the poem and asked to see her house. Today people may see a reconstruction of her house at the original site on West Patrick Street.
Barbara Fritchie at Heritage Frederick’s Museum of Frederick History: The play “Barbara Frietchie” by Clyde Fitch was romantic fiction, originally produced in Philadelphia in 1889. Two weeks later, it was performed in New York and closed in 1890. “Barbara Frietchie Patriotic Ballad” was composed by Jules Jordan and was performed in Boston for a soloist, chorus and orchestra. “My Maryland” was based on Fitch’s play and was performed at Jolson’s Theatre in New York. Actress Julia Marlowe (1865–1950) performed as Barbara Fritchie. BY TURNER PHOTOGRAPHY

BARBARA FRIETCHIE
BY JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER
Up from the meadows rich with corn, Clear in the cool September morn, The clustered spires of Frederick stand Green-walled by the hills of Maryland. Round about them orchards sweep, Apple- and peach-tree fruited deep, Fair as a garden of the Lord To the eyes of the famished rebel horde, On that pleasant morn of the early fall When Lee marched over the mountain wall,— Over the mountains winding down, Horse and foot, into Frederick town. Forty flags with their silver stars, Forty flags with their crimson bars, Flapped in the morning wind: the sun Of noon looked down, and saw not one. Up rose old Barbara Frietchie then, Bowed with her fourscore years and ten; Bravest of all in Frederick town, She took up the flag the men hauled down;
In her attic window the staff she set, To show that one heart was loyal yet. Up the street came the rebel tread, Stonewall Jackson riding ahead. Under his slouched hat left and right He glanced: the old flag met his sight. “Halt!”— the dust-brown ranks stood fast. “Fire!”— out blazed the rifle-blast. It shivered the window, pane and sash; It rent the banner with seam and gash. Quick, as it fell, from the broken staff Dame Barbara snatched the silken scarf; She leaned far out on the window-sill, And shook it forth with a royal will. “Shoot, if you must, this old gray head, But spare your country’s flag,” she said. A shade of sadness, a blush of shame, Over the face of the leader came; The nobler nature within him stirred To life at that woman’s deed and word:
“Who touches a hair of yon gray head Dies like a dog! March on!” he said. All day long through Frederick street Sounded the tread of marching feet: All day long that free flag tost Over the heads of the rebel host. Ever its torn folds rose and fell On the loyal winds that loved it well; And through the hill-gaps sunset light Shone over it with a warm good-night. Barbara Frietchie’s work is o’er, And the Rebel rides on his raids no more. Honor to her! and let a tear Fall, for her sake, on Stonewall’s bier. Over Barbara Frietchie’s grave Flag of Freedom and Union, wave! Peace and order and beauty draw Round thy symbol of light and law; And ever the stars above look down On thy stars below in Frederick town!

Three Truths to Understand ABOUT REAL ESTATE
BY KAREN HIGHLAND, COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR, FREDERICK COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS
Many real estate professionals would love to provide more insight and education to the general public about three topics: Buyer Agency Laws, Representation, and Local Market Supply and Demand. 1. Buyer Agency Laws in Maryland Maryland is known to be a progressive consumer advocacy state. Buyer Agency was introduced in the late 1990s and is an example of the way Maryland was ahead of many states in protecting the interests of home buyers. If you’ve purchased a home in Maryland any time since 1999, then you should have been made aware of Maryland Agency Laws—who represents whom in a real estate transaction. The Maryland Real Estate Commission is responsible for overseeing the nearly 40,000 licensed real estate salespeople and brokers throughout the state. The Commission's job is to protect the general public by establishing and enforcing professional standards and informing the public of their rights in the process of buying or selling a home. On Oct. 1, 2016, new laws regarding agency took effect, and they have an impact on home buyers. Here are some things homebuyers should know: There are three types of agency in Maryland • Agents who represent the seller—including the seller’s agent and the subagent (can assist the buyer in purchasing a property, but his or her duty of loyalty is only to the seller.) • Agents who represent the buyer—the buyer’s agent. • Dual Agents—dual agency arises when the buyer’s agent and the seller’s agent both work for the same real estate company. What has changed as of October 1, 2016? There will no longer be the type of agency called “Presumed Agency.” Previously, without a signed Buyer’s Agency Agreement, the agent could continue to represent the buyer by providing services as a Presumed Agent. That presumptive representation is no longer recognized in Maryland. What Does this Mean for A Homebuyer? Before the advent of Buyer’s Agency Laws in 1999, every agent was required to work for the seller, and represented the seller’s best interests. The Maryland Real Estate Commission wants to ensure that homebuyers know their rights and understand that they have Buyer Agency available to
18
thefrederickguide.com
them. Consumers should understand that all agents are mandated by law to represent the seller when there is no written Buyer’s Agency Agreement in place. Please be aware that all real estate agents are required by law to treat all parties “fairly and honestly,” but without a written Buyer’s Agency Agreement, the agent represents the seller. It is the law. After Oct. 1, homebuyers cannot presume that the agent whom they are working with represents them. When visiting an open house, a new “Open House Disclosure” notice will be placed visibly, which explains that the agent conducting the open house represents the seller. Real Estate agents are required to educate buyers and sellers on Agency laws and their rights upon the first meeting.
2. Representation Agency is more than information. Today’s homebuyers are well aware that this is the information age and are able to obtain vast amounts of information from the internet on houses, neighborhoods and lifestyles. But this is the important part about Buyer Agency: Without a written agreement, you cannot get any information that is tailored to your interest. Buyer Agency is designed to give the buyer representation, or advocacy. Buying or selling a home is one of the largest financial transactions that most people will make in their lifetimes. The complexities of buying and selling real estate have increased over the years, making it also one of the most difficult transactions most people engage in. Having a real estate agent who is your trusted adviser may be the most important aspect of buying and selling, and can often make or break a transaction. Although it can be unnerving to trust someone else for counsel in this important decision, most buyers and sellers realize that they can benefit from having a professional to help guide them through the complexities. After all, the average homeowner buys and sells a home five times in their lifetime. The average real estate agent does multiple transactions in the year, and will have seen multiple scenarios. Real estate professionals will have intuitive insight directed by this experience.
Immediately upon reading these statements, many homebuyers will have questions… •
“What if I don’t want to make a commitment, I just want to see a house?” Consider that a real estate agent has expertise that comes from hundreds, if not thousands, of real estate transactions over their career… why not take advantage of that knowledge? Especially appealing should be the fact that the knowledge can be used for your interests.
•
“What if I don’t like that real estate agent?” All Maryland contracts are required to have a cancellation clause. You can hire a real estate agent for the month or the week, or for a onetime home showing, or even for an hour if you really want to.
•
“I just met the agent two minutes ago, I really don’t want to sign something.” That is your right. The law is in place to let buyers know their rights and options. Buyers have the right to enter a home purchase agreement unrepresented.
Your real estate agent may do more than just help you find a home, or help you sell your home. There are many moving parts still to take place after the contract is signed. All along the way, you should have confidence in your Realtor, such that you see them as a trusted adviser.
3. All Real Estate is Local An educated consumer is a better prepared consumer. Real estate professionals would not have it any other way. However, the information found on the internet must still be interpreted with local market expertise. Markets can differ at any given time, from region to region, state to state, city to city, and even among neighborhoods within a city. All real estate is local, even hyper local in many instances. Even with the many changes in the real estate industry due to technology and information, any local real estate market still hinges on two basic market factors: supply and demand. Local Realtors offer their buyers and sellers the benefit that comes from immersing themselves in their local market every day of the year. They can provide the local expertise through which all the data must be interpreted to become truly meaningful. To understand true home values, find a qualified local Realtor and ask them about the local market trends.

Federated Charities Offers Incubator Space to Assist Nonprofits BY ELIN ROSS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, FEDERATED CHARITIES
The Lloyd and Charlotte Hoover Charity Incubator Space, a small, low-cost, flexible space available to emerging nonprofit organizations in Frederick, launched at the beginning of 2017. In the incubator space, Federated Charities is also sharing their 100 years of expertise to help new organizations move from concept to implementation. In addition to the incubator space, these organizations have access to quarterly training sessions, underwritten by Federated Charities, to help them focus their energy on providing better services to the community. The official vision of the Hoover Charity Incubator space is to use the assets of the Federated Charities building to support the efforts of emerging programs that support the well-being of residents in Frederick and provide services to needy families and individuals. Federated Charities has promoted the value of collaborative space and believes that when nonprofits can save on overhead costs, they have more resources to use for the programs and services that directly impact individuals and local communities. Tenancy in the Hoover Incubator, or in a traditional 12-month lease with Federated Charities, brings added value to partner programs and clients by sharing unique expertise, collaboration and maximization of resources. Federated Charities provides a visible space in the heart of Downtown Frederick where organizations and the community can support these programs and their clients. The mission of Federated Charities for more than 100 years has been to provide compassionate community services in Frederick and offer

education and resources that support nonprofits in a collaborative environment so they can better serve their local clients. The intention is to promote this mission by providing attractive, centrally located and cost-effective space for nonprofit tenant partners, whether they rent for one day or 12 months. Featuring amenities such as free WiFi, file storage, access to a 15-seat conference room, mail delivery, monthly “office hours,” a kitchenette and a color copier, tenancy in the Hoover Incubator can be an effective way for a small nonprofit organization to establish a presence in the heart of Downtown Frederick. Depending on which membership level an organization chooses, the daily rate for rentals are as low as $10 per day, so organizations can build the schedule they need to bring the next, great, worldchanging program to fruition.

Enter the Great Frederick DISCOVERY RACE BY DR. TERRY ALBAN, SUPERINTENDENT, FREDERICK COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) is excited to launch the Great Frederick Discovery Race this spring to support our Young Scholars program while providing a fun community activity. FCPS “Young Scholars” have created clues to help race participants of all ages find and learn about locations throughout Frederick’s historic district. Families, co-workers, neighbors or any group can sign up now to race as a team from 2–4 p.m., on Saturday, May 13. As racers find each location, they snap a team photo as proof. The race is suitable for all ages and can be as competitive or non-competitive as the participants wish. The first teams to complete 11 of 12 clue challenges will win prizes. But that’s not all! The Great Frederick Discovery Race will also yield awards to racers with the best costume themes. Teams can race in superhero costumes, as historic figures, or dressed to represent their work or other group. There is a lot of freedom to be creative and have fun with costumes. The FCPS Young Scholars program is for students with high academic potential, but are traditionally underrepresented in advanced coursework. They may lack advocates, access, or experiences. Many are students whose family circumstances make them eligible for free or reduced-price school meals. Founded in 2011, the FCPS Young Scholars program operates at Hillcrest and Monocacy Elementary schools and Monocacy and West Frederick Middle schools, where students learn about future opportunities in engineering and other STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. Students remain part of the program throughout their school years. The first group of Young Scholars will enter Frederick and Gov. Thomas Johnson high schools this

fall. All funds raised through the race will support field trips and summer experiences for Young Scholars. The idea for the Great Frederick Discovery Race came about during a meeting of a group called Eliminating Achievement Gaps, Inc. (EAG). Ed Hinde, who directs SHIP (the Student Homelessness Initiative Partnership) suggested the idea. Meg Lee, who supervises Advanced Academics for the school system, agreed it was a terrific project for students to undertake and a great way to raise support to continue the Young Scholars program. Middle school Young Scholars created the race clues as part of last summer’s camp. The Community Foundation of Frederick County agreed to manage the race fund. Early bird registration is $20 per person or $70 per team of up to four. Registration is open now at http://tinyurl.com/ GreatFDRace and will continue through race day. Early registration will help coordinators prepare for a successful event. Please sign up now to join the Great Frederick Discovery Race for an afternoon of excitement, learning and fun for all ages. As a bonus, you’ll be making a positive difference for local students to ensure a bright future in Frederick County.

New Business TEACHES KIDS TO CODE Cara Christianson always assumed people were either right-brained or left-brained, and she was firmly in the left, artsy column. A lifelong lover of the arts and dance, Cara, 30, earned her degree in art education from Hood College and moved to Frederick with her husband a few years later. Her husband, Andy, a software engineer, never stopped encouraging her to try coding. He had been doing it since he was a child and knew she would love it too. After teaching at Oakdale Middle School for 3 years, Cara caught the “coding bug.” Then, after their daughter, Lacey, was born, the Christansons thought it was a good time to start a business centered on coding for kids. That’s when The Elsewhen Brainery was born. This unique business in Frederick offers a long-term program that provides students with a thorough coding education. They start with the basics, such as drawing static images, then move on to animations, and finally user interaction to make games. At the highest levels, kids are learning object-oriented programming, which allows students to make complex, reusable code. Cara was kind enough to answer a few questions about her burgeoning business and share the benefits of learning to code, for kids.
What inspired the creation of The Elsewhen Brainery? I decided that perhaps if I had been exposed to coding as a kid, I would have had more career options, and I decided that I could give other kids the opportunity to explore these options. The name came from our joint nerdiness. I love reading, particularly “Harry Potter” novels, so I wanted something that sounded like you would find it in Diagon Alley, thus Brainery came to be. Elsewhen is a science fiction term, referring to another place in time. It is also a play on Else/If, which is a programming term.
How does it all work? Our classes are currently for third- through eighth-grade students. The students that come to our classes are diverse in every way. Some kids build their own computers and have learned some coding on their own, some know almost nothing except that coding seems like fun. We strive to meet each kid where they are. We don’t want anyone to be overwhelmed and disheartened and at the same time, we don’t want anyone to be bored or not challenged.
What are your goals? The Frederick community is very important to me and I want to be able to give back in a meaningful way and what better way than preparing our kids for a bright future! In time, we’d like to expand to subject areas that go along with coding, such as web design or user interface. I would love to be able to send kids out with skills that could help them get jobs in the future.
What exactly is “coding” for someone who knows nothing/little about computing? Simply put, coding or computer programming is giving the computer a set of instructions to follow. Those instructions could be something as simple as printing “Hello World,” or something as complicated as the entire operating system that runs on your computers and devices. Coding is important for the obvious reason that our world is becoming more and more technology driven, but it is also important because it teaches students to think in a different way. With coding there isn’t a single right way to solve a problem. That’s why I love teaching these classes; I love to see the different ways that kids approach the problems!
What is a typical class or series of classes like? We have Fall and Spring sessions, a Winter Code Jam and a Summer Camp. Our Fall and Spring sessions are 10-week sessions that meet once per week for 2 hours. These classes involve lessons as well as independent and collaborative work time. Our Winter Code Jam is for experienced students who want a little more freedom to create something of their own imagining. They come in with an idea and work on it, getting feedback and guidance from teachers and peers. Our Summer Camp is a one-week camp during which students work in teams, competing to create the best game. At the end of the camp, they present their game to a panel of judges, which is always super exciting.

Seven Sacred Practices for HEALING OVERWHELM BY LISA A. MCCROHAN, MA, LCSW-C, RYT
My friend’s children ran past me as I opened the door for them. Their dad walked in behind them. After we said our “hellos” he shared with me, “My head is spinning with everything that’s going on in our country. But I can’t look away! It’s overwhelming.” “Yes, it is,” I told him. The news is everywhere, and it’s difficult to look away. How do we stay involved and informed and yet not get overwhelmed? I hear this in Somatic Psychotherapy and Compassion Coaching. I see it on social media. I have felt it myself, too. So, here is my advice for sacred practices to heal the overwhelm you may be feeling. 1. Nourish your senses. Our senses are on overload. Our minds are decision-fatigued. Little breaks of tending to our senses through an embodiment practice can be so deeply nourishing and supportive for our overwhelmed and frazzled nervous systems. (View this video I created on how to take a Sensory Break: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRZGQ2FUT6M) 2. Go outside. Walk. Feel yourself breathing fresh air. Be in the quiet of nature. 3. Practice gentleness. Every day, I am more and more convinced that gentleness heals. It is the healing balm for sadness, shame and grief, within us and between us. It heals and opens the heart so we may breathe and live more fully. 4. Take the “longer view.” “The long view” is not popular in our “quick-fix” society, but it is necessary to remember that we do our part and pass our ethics down to our children. 5. Learn to pause—or even learn to meditate! We need these little sacred pauses in our day. Silence and stillness nourish us. We can see joys and sorrows as waves and as part of this human experience—and extend compassionate spaciousness to what arises.

6. Notice delight. Delight softens, strengthens and opens us in a gentle, nourishing way. There is a profound power to notice the “everyday delights.” Make it simple. Look around the room where you are right now. Notice what delight is right here at your fingertips. Got a picture in your mind and heart? Notice what is delightful about it. 7. Start your day with a blessing and teach your children to do the same. In my new self-study course, Regarding Our Girls: Feminine Embodiment Practices to Empower, Uplift and Connect with Our Daughters, I share the Embodiment Blessing that can so easily be weaved into your everyday life and that you can teach to your children. (Find it at lisamccrohan.com.) These seven sacred practices for healing the overwhelm go a long way in nourishing your nervous system and helping you to restore that sense of inner vibrancy. When you teach these practices to your children, you are equipping them with life-long mindfulness and compassion-based practices. This will support them and keep them grounded, prevent overwhelm, and keep their minds clear so they can focus on what matters most to them.

VARIETY OF SERVICES OFFERED FOR SENIORS in Frederick County There are a number of agencies in Frederick County that exist to serve the region’s older residents. We’ve gathered information on a few of those services as reference for older county residents, and those who care for them.
Senior Care provides services such as:
Frederick County Commission on Aging
• Meal preparation
In 1965, the Frederick Board of County Commissioners conducted a survey of the needs of the older residents in Frederick County. Based upon the results of this survey, the commissioners established the Frederick County Commission on Aging in December 1965. The purpose of the Commission is to advise the County Executive and the Frederick County Department of Aging on all matters relating to development and administration of the area plan and operations conducted hereunder, and to be advocates for issues relating to aging. This commission is composed of 15 voting members, all residents and registered voters of Frederick County. There are also non-voting ex-officio members. Members serve staggered terms of 3 years. The Commission on Aging is always interested in qualified advocates for seniors to serve on the board as vacancies occur. The County Executive appoints members. If you would like to apply to be a member, send a letter of interest, along with your resume to: Joyce M. Grossnickle, Administrative Officer Office of County Executive Winchester Hall, 12 E. Church St., Frederick, MD 21701 Call 301-600-1100 for more information.
Senior Care Services The Frederick County Department of Social Services offers Senior Care services to help frail older persons to live in their homes and avoid having to move into a nursing home or other institution. Senior Care is a coordination system of community services for the elderly provided jointly by local aging, social services, health and other agencies. Senior Care services start with an evaluation of the older person’s service needs by Geriatric Evaluation Services staff. Then, a case manager helps locate and arrange for the needed services.

• Bathing and dressing • Light housekeeping
• Shopping/budgeting • Transportation To be eligible for Senior Care services, a person must be 65 years of age or older, a resident of Maryland, meet eligibility requirements and annual assistance guidelines, and have a medical condition that puts them at risk of having to enter a nursing home or other institution. Those who meet these eligibility requirements can receive most Senior Care services at little or no cost to them. Some services are available free to those who have limited financial resources. The Senior Care system is managed locally through a cooperative agreement between Frederick County Departments of Aging, Social Services and Health. It is a program of the Maryland Department of Aging and is funded by the State of Maryland. For more information, contact Frederick County Social Services, 100 E. All Saints St., Frederick. 301-600-2635.
Senior Centers The Frederick County Department of Aging operates a number of senior centers as community focal points offering educational programs, health and fitness activities, recreation and social opportunities, as well as access to resources and benefits to help individuals maintain wellness and independence throughout the county. Each senior center has its own personality, but all have one thing in common: a commitment to offer activities and events that are appealing to each participant. SPRING IS FOR BIKING Around Frederick BY KENDALL K TIFFANY, TRANSIT COMMUNITY RELATIONS MANAGER
As the weather begins to get warmer, it’s a great time to explore Frederick from a different perspective: by bicycle. During the last few years, Frederick has been actively improving bicycle infrastructure around the county. The most recently completed project is a shared-use path under U.S. Route 15 along Rosemont Avenue in Frederick. The newly constructed underpass path connects the east and west sides of Frederick, allowing bicyclists and pedestrians to safely travel to and from the Golden Mile, the Rock Creek Trail, Waterford Park, Baker Park, Carroll Creek and Downtown Frederick. To get out and explore Frederick by bike, learn more about bicycle loops and upcoming events below.
Frederick History Bicycle Loop Interested in the history of Frederick? Explore it by bike. There is a Frederick History Bicycle Loop created by the City of Frederick’s Bicycle Advisory Committee and the Tourism Council of Frederick County. The loop highlights 22 sites, including the Francis Scott Key Monument, the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and multiple parks. To learn more about the loop and obtain a copy of the brochure, stop by the Visitor’s Center on East Street or find a copy online at visitfrederick.org.
Bike to Work Day 2017 Are you an avid bike commuter or have you been exploring the idea of bike commuting? Join hundreds of other bike commuters in Frederick on Friday, May 19 for Bike to Work Day 2017. Bike to Work Day is a free regional event promoting alternative transportation, co-sponsored by Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclists Association (WABA), which hosts more than 80 pit stops with more than 17,500 regional participants. Frederick County’s event includes a ceremonial ride through Downtown Frederick beginning at about 6:30 a.m., and concludes with a pit stop celebration at the Frederick Transit Center on East Street. Those interested in participating in Bike to Work Day in Frederick can register at BikeToWorkMetroDC.org. The first 15,000 registrants will receive a free T-shirt. BRUNSWICK A Town in Transition, from Rails to Trails BY MARGARITA RAYCHEVA
D
efining what Brunswick is all about was not difficult at the turn of the 19th century. A bustling transportation boomtown, the city lived and breathed with the sound of steam
train engines. The railroad brought jobs and prosperity and played such an important role in city life that local families cooked, ate and even did their laundry according to train schedules. But in the 1950s the railroad pulled out of Brunswick, the train whistles died abruptly and the city, deprived of the single force driving its economy, slipped into a decline that lasted for decades. Today the city is finally done mourning the lost glory of the past and is charting a new course for the future—one that involves bike paths and hiking trails, rather than railroad tracks. The sleepy town is now filled with a new air of excitement, as residents, business owners and city officials are stepping up efforts to revive and reinvent their community. Seeking to redefine Brunswick as an attractive outdoor destination, they are working to fill empty downtown storefronts, opening new businesses and building trails for hiking and biking.
With the city working on a new municipal building, the successful Smoketown Brewing Station opening downtown, and the continuous expansion of Brunswick Crossing—a population-doubling housing development—Brunswick may finally be on track to change its fortune.
“In the future, I can see it having big festivals for bikers,” says Benancio Morales, a retired Air Force veteran who opened Brunswick’s newest restaurant, Benancio’s Southwestern Grill, last year. The restaurant, which is planning a grand opening in April, has already been extremely popular with locals, as well as visitors. “I think I am just the start of the new wave coming in,” Morales says. “I think in three to five years, we will be looking at a different Brunswick, for sure.”
Reviving the City Many believe that the key for reviving the city is shifting its focus to tap into the numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation available in the area. With its Potomac River location, the C&O Canal, and proximity to Harper’s Ferry, Antietam, Leesburg and Charlestown, the city has everything it needs to reinvent itself into an attractive tourist and outdoor destination.

// F R E DE RI C K C O U N T Y TOW NS Brunswick gets bikers from all over the world, who fly their bikes to Washington, D.C. and pass through town as they ride to Harper’s Ferry and the Appalachian Trail. But the city has struggled to capture those visitors and use them to revive its downtown commercial district.
Even the Brunswick Heritage Museum, which has traditionally focused on Brunswick’s railroad glory days, is considering expanding its focus to reflect other periods in the history of the area.
“Brunswick has so many outdoor recreational opportunities from which to choose: C&O Canal Towpath, Potomac River, Brunswick Family Campground, Rivers Edge Project, and train watching, too,” said Terri Householder, the city coordinator for economic development. “Our natural amenities accommodate people of all ages and fitness levels.”
The museum, which among other items features a 1,700-foot model railroad layout of a train ride from Brunswick to Washington D.C., has been one of the main attractions in the city, serving visitors from all parts of the country and the world. The museum this year was selected as one of five locations in the state to host The Smithsonian’s Main Street travelling exhibit “The Way We Worked” from July 21 through Sept. 8.
Looking for solutions, the city hired Illumin8 Marketing PR to develop a comprehensive, multi-platform economic development marketing plan with a focus on outdoor recreation, Householder said. The goal is to help the city recruit businesses geared toward serving visiting bikers and hikers.
But with more out-of-town travelers coming in, museum director Jim Castle has been fielding questions about the broader history of the area, including the Native American presence and Brunswick’s role in the Civil War.
Residents in the meantime are also doing their part in enhancing the city’s new focus on outdoor activities. In 2015, Brunswick residents Carlo Alfano and Keith Marks, who owns the Three Points Bike shop in town, began to transform 59 acres of unused woodland by the city’s Sports Complex into a trail for hiking and biking. The project, known as Rivers Edge Recreation Park, has become a community effort involving 530 volunteer work hours and has already received 576 likes on Facebook. “A lot of effort has been put into this fabulous trail which will be opening in the spring,” says Brunswick Mayor Jeff Snoots. In the spring, Brunswick is also moving on with renovations, which will add cabins to the popular Brunswick Family Campground, Snoots said. The city-owned campground is run by River and Trail Outfitters and offers opportunities for kayaking, climbing, rafting and tubing.
In response, Castle is working on developing a permanent exhibit, which for the first time will feature a full timeline of history in the area. He also plans to petition the National Park Service to allow archeological studies in Native American campsites, which have been largely unexplored. “There isn’t much known about the Native American history in this area,” he said. “It’s never been further researched.” “We’ve got so much more of a story to tell,” Castle added. A fifth-generation Brunswick resident, and the first in his family not to work on the railroad, Castle has noticed the positive changes happening in town. With more businesses operating, museum visitors have increased from 5,000 in 2015 to 6,500 in 2016. “One success leads to another,” Castle said. “The only thing we really need now is a bed and breakfast downtown.”

F R E D E R I C K C O U N T Y T O W N S \\ Troubles and Triumphs Brunswick, which celebrated 125th anniversary of its incorporation in 2015, has had its share of troubles and triumphs over the years. In 1883, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad chose the town—which was then called Berlin—as site for its biggest railyard on the East Coast. Coal-powered trains at the time could only travel so far before they needed to stop and refuel. When the yard opened, the city entered a golden age. With hundreds of new jobs available at the railroad, population exploded from 300 to 3,000 during the course of six years. As hundreds of German railroad workers settled in town, the city was renamed Brunswick to honor their European roots. The city boomed and prospered as a company town until the 1950s, when more powerful diesel trains made the yard in Brunswick obsolete and the railroad pulled out of town. Brunswick managed to survive the hit mostly thanks to its MARC train connection to Washington, D.C. It gradually became a town of commuters and its once-bustling downtown district shrank to a handful of businesses fighting for survival. Even today, when the downtown commercial district seems more stable than ever, challenges still exist. Though hundreds of commuters take the train from Brunswick every day, getting them to stay downtown has been a major struggle, even for the city’s successful businesses. Filling empty storefronts and finding tenants for some of the large, boomtown-era downtown buildings is also an ongoing problem. Yet, some persistent business owners have found their own ways to endure and adapt.
64
thefrederickguide.com
The city’s oldest business, Brunswick Hardware and Sporting Goods, has been run by the same family since 1973 and now sells an eclectic selection of goods, including fishing and hunting gear for outdoor enthusiasts. An eclectic café based inside a 100-year-old restored church downtown, Beans in the Belfry has operated in town for more than a decade and continues to draw visitors from inside and outside the county. The quirky café offers unique atmosphere coupled with live music on Friday and Saturday evenings. The café draws in musicians from the tri-state and Washington D.C. metro areas, holds open mic nights and regular events such as Jazz Brunch and Traditional English Afternoon Tea every Sunday. Local business owners are also thinking outside the box in their efforts to revive the city’s commercial district. Beth Johnson, who runs A Better Choice Bakery in downtown Brunswick, organized Brunswick’s first Kansas City Barbecue Society certified barbecue contest earlier this spring. The Great Brunswick BBQ Throwdown took place March 3-4, accomplishing the rare feat of bringing 2,000 people—including 50 competitors from New Jersey, Virginia and Rhode Island—into Brunswick’s usually sleepy downtown in the middle of winter. “They spent time in our restaurants, they shopped in our stores,” said Johnson, who organized the event as a private resident. Johnson donated proceeds from the event to the Brunswick Heritage Museum. She said she was thrilled with the turnout. Brunswick typically gets this volume of visitors only during signature celebrations, such as the Railroad Days weekend in September, she said.

“It’s such a new world, but it is definitely something that Brunswick can be a part of,” Johnson said. “Barbecue is southern and we know that. But Brunswick is barbecue. Brunswick is really a place where you want to eat good food and really just be with friends.” Brunswick city officials are also looking at ways to make downtown Brunswick more business-friendly. The Brunswick Main Street program last year started a partnership with the Frederick County Office of Economic Development, resulting in the opening of a pop-up shop inside the Kaplon building on Potomac Street, which has stayed empty for years. The Made in Maryland Marketplace is an artisan market, which opens at holidays offering a selection of goods from local farmers and artists. In 2016, Brunswick also earned an enterprise zone designation from the state, which will provide property owners with tax breaks for improving properties and allow employers to receive up to $6,000 in income tax credits for every new job created in town. “Revitalizing our downtown continues to be a slow process,” said Mayor Snoots. “There are projects being presented by several property owners to help revitalize this area.”
66
thefrederickguide.com
A former city councilman, Snoots was elected to his current position in 2016 and says his primary goal is to bring Brunswick back to life again. Snoots has a long list of projects that he wants to complete in the city, including repairing water and sewer lines and moving on with plans to construct a new municipal building for the city police and public works departments. “Our police department needs a larger facility, as well as our public works department,” Snoots said. “As Brunswick continues to grow, we must plan accordingly.” One the most highly anticipated projects coming to Brunswick this year is the 56,000-square-foot Weis supermarket, which is expected to open in the fall, he said. Brunswick has been without a supermarket since Fresh & Green’s closed in 2014. “This will be a very exciting addition,” Snoots said. “Not having a grocery store here has been a hardship for many of our senior residents, as well the rest of our citizens. Along with the grocery store, we are anticipating other small stores and services will follow.” The Weis will be located on Md. Route 17 within Brunswick Crossing, a residential development, which has been pumping new life and residents into the city since 2007. Located north of downtown, the Pleasants Development project has a 10-year buildout plan and eventually will add 1,505 new homes to Brunswick’s existing 2,212 homes.

She has vowed to make the competition an annual tradition for the city, which she believes can use special events, festivals and celebrations as a way to attract business and visitors.

// F R E DE RI C K C O U N T Y TOW NS New business New businesses have also been coming to town in recent years. In 2016, Brunswick gained a yoga studio, an eclectic boutique and a restaurant. In 2016, Rosemont resident David Blackmon transformed Brunswick’s retired firehouse into a brewery. The brewery—which is the only craft beer venue in a 15-mile radius—has been extremely popular and has given visitors a whole new reason to discover Brunswick, Householder said “Smoketown has helped the city grow by being a destination place for people from inside and outside the city,” she said. “It brings people into the city and into downtown that might otherwise not have come to see all Brunswick has to offer. It adds another sense of vibrancy.”
“There’s a transitioning happening here,” he said. “I think Brunswick is going to grow. The idea is to get people excited again, I think that’s the key.” Born and raised in New Mexico, Morales now lives in Knoxville and offers family recipes rooted in Southwestern cuisine. Reminiscent of Chipotle, Morales’ restaurant is intentionally set up to have a more laid back atmosphere than a formal sit-down restaurant. Morales has also come up with his own solution to a problem that has bugged Brunswick businesses for years—how to reel in commuters, who leave early, return late and typically have no time to stay downtown.
In the coming months Blackmon is starting work on transforming the historic 6,000 square foot ballroom on the second floor of the building into an event space and entertainment venue.
In a few months, Benancio’s is opening a pick-up window, where commuters can grab a quick breakfast burrito on their way to the train. Commuters will be able to place pickup orders the night before, so no time will be wasted in the morning, Morales explained.
“We’ll have bands, events, weddings,” Blackmon says. “We are shooting for a summer opening.”
Morales, who serves a number of MARC train commuters, says they are already looking forward to the idea.
Morales who also opened Benancio’s last year, is another business owner who believes in Brunswick’s potential for growth and change.
“They are so excited, they are offering to plan my grand opening,” he said.

BURKITTSVILLE Burkittsville is a virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Today, Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam.

EMMITSBURG Emmitsburg, a quiet town nestled at the foot of the mountains, offers peace and tranquility. Incorporated in the early 1800s, Emmitsburg was the home of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. She established the first Catholic school in the U.S., that grew into St. Joseph’s College. The property is now home to the National Fire Academy and Homeland Security. A short drive away is Mount Saint Mary’s University. In Emmitsburg you can relax but still be within driving distance to major cities such as Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Harrisburg. You are just a few miles from the Gettysburg Battlefield, Ski Liberty Resort and numerous golf courses.

MIDDLETOWN Middletown is a small, rural community steeped in American history. It is located in the beautiful Middletown Valley that stretches between the Catoctin Mountains on the east and South Mountain on the west. A young Lt. George Washington, while surveying the South Mountain area, reported that the valley to the east was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Middletown continues to evolve from a settlement of farmers and ranchers to one of tradesmen, craftsmen, businessmen, clergymen, commuters and retired folk—without losing its agricultural roots. From the stately old Victorian-style homes and soaring church steeples to the rustic dairy farms and modern housing developments, residents find in Middletown a refuge where they can enjoy small-town life as it used to be.

MOUNT AIRY The Town of Mount Airy is a nationally accredited “Main Street Maryland Community” and holds the State of Maryland’s esteemed “Community Legacy” designation. Located directly off of Interstate 70, it is about 45 minutes from both the Baltimore and Washington metropolitan job markets. One can quickly become enamored with downtown Mount Airy and its small-town charm, quaint old buildings and friendliness that takes you back to a time long past. Mount Airy has experienced a dramatic increase in growth, but because of effective growth management and land use strategies, still retains that quaint, small-town atmosphere. It boasts a booming downtown with community and cultural events, retail establishments, antique and craft collectible shops, cafes and restaurants.

MYERSVILLE Myersville is strategically located halfway between Frederick and Hagerstown, with convenient access from Interstate 70 to the south and U.S. Route 40 to the north, yet nicely buffered from both by a mile of local road. The outstanding location and beautiful, hilly terrain combined to make the town an attractive location for residential development during the last decades of the 20th century.

WALKERSVILLE Walkersville is a combination of two villages that were settled by German immigrants in the mid 1700s and early 1800s. By the late 1800s, the villages of Georgetown and Walkersville had grown so intertwined that it made sense to combine them into one entity, which was named Walkersville. Today, Walkersville aggressively pursues fiscal responsibility, recycling projects, and innovation. In 1995, it was credited with having the first State Police bicycle patrol in the nation. There are four schools, residential developments, a shopping center, several businesses and institutions, and numerous restaurants in the town. Walkersville has managed a rapid population growth wisely, enabling it to maintain a friendly, small-town atmosphere.

WOODSBORO Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town.
