Frederick County Offers Miles of Scenic Cycling by Michelle Kershner, Tourism Council of Frederick County Hundreds of miles of roads line Frederick County, many of them excellent for bicycling, and the newly released Heritage Bicycle Tours brochure and the Frederick History Bicycle Loop brochure offer cyclists a way to discover the area’s rich history and scenic landscapes. The Heritage Bicycle Tours brochure features five distinct tours, each with its own unique experiences. The City of Frederick “Campaign Ride” takes cyclists through the heart of Downtown Frederick and visits several resources related to the American Civil War. The North County Bridge Sampler features scenic rural roads that allow cyclists to explore Frederick’s three fully operational covered bridges by bike. A mostly flat route with rolling portions, the Transportation Heritage Trail takes visitors along the C&O Canal and through historic sites and towns.
10 SUMMER 2013
For those looking to test their mettle, the Catoctin Mountain Challenge tour traverses Catoctin Mountain, the 50-mile long ridge that runs from Emmitsburg, Md., to Leesburg, Va. The route takes bikers through a myriad of parklands with optional rural gravel roadways and off-road trails that branch off of the main route. The Spirits of Burkittsville ride focuses on the Town of Burkittsville, with a population of less than 200, and was made famous by the movie “The Blair Witch Project.” Riders will learn about South Mountain Battlefield, whiskey distillery heritage, and Gathland State Park. A separate brochure, the Frederick History Bicycle Loop, takes riders through the streets, alleys and paths of historic Downtown
in the community
Frederick. The 10-mile loop guides the cyclist through 21 sites in Frederick’s 50-block Historic District and around the city’s famous Clustered Spires. Featuring the final resting place of Francis Scott Key, the Barbara Fritchie House, and many other historic structures and sites, the tour is as educational as it is scenic. Best of all, when you’re finished, you can grab a bite or a pint at one of Frederick’s many restaurants or cafes.
Information: Download the online version of the Heritage Bicycle Tour at http://bit.ly/bikefrederick or pick one up at the Frederick Visitor Center, 151 S. East St., Frederick, MD. Call 1-800-999-3613 for more information.

Frederick County Green Homes Challenge: Go Green. $ave Green.
By Nicole Robinson, Frederick County Office of Sustainability and Environmental Resources Everyone has a reason to take the Green Homes Challenge, whether it is saving on energy bills, improving the environment, or using clean, renewable energy.
• Create an account and upload a profile picture
Coordinated by the Frederick County Office of Sustainability and Environmental Resources (OSER), the Green Homes Challenge involves more than 850 households. Many of these households have become certified as Power Savers, Green Leaders, and/or Renewable Stars by completing projects and changing behaviors at home, such as installing efficient light bulbs, upgrading insulation, carpooling, composting, purchasing wind energy, or installing solar panels.
• Learn about rebates and grants available to make projects more affordable
For each action completed, whether completed before or during participation in the program, households earn points toward three certifications. The Power Saver Challenge focuses on saving energy and money on energy bills; the Green Leader Challenge helps create a healthy and sustainable home; and the Renewable Star Challenge helps households use renewable energy. “We are happy to have been able to participate and have noticed that our power bill was $60 less than last month,” Robyn Myers, a certified Power Saver and Green Leader, stated. May 2013 marked the launch of FrederickGreenChallenge.org, an interactive website with tools that simplify the Green Homes Challenge process. On the site, users are able to:
• Find actions based on category, such as renter-friendly, biggest savers, and cost
• Set goals and mark actions as complete • Earn points toward a Power Saver, Green Leader, or Renewable Star certification • See projected financial, energy, carbon, water, and gasoline savings • Join or start a Green Team • Share tips and stories with other Challenge Takers Participating in the Challenge allows for financial and energy savings at home, and also the chance to win prizes. Certified Power Savers and Green Leaders won about 60 prizes during Certified Household Recognition Events in 2012 and 2013, such as gift certificates for local stores and restaurants, energy efficiency upgrade packages, and gift baskets. Public officials have also expressed support for the Green Homes Challenge, serving as role models for the community. Certified public officials include Frederick County Commissioner David Gray, Frederick Mayor Randy McClement, Emmitsburg Mayor FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE
13
in the community Don Briggs, Burkittsville Mayor Debby Burgoyne, Myersville Mayor Wayne Creadick, Brunswick Mayor Karin Tome, and City of Frederick Aldermen Shelley Aloi, Kelly Russell, and Karen Young. Alderman Russell said, “I save lots of money by cycling instead of driving, my fitness level has improved, and I have significantly reduced the emissions I put into the air. I eat more fresh fruits and vegetables purchased at local farmers markets, which is good for me and good for the local economy… I feel good about doing my part to help the environment, and I save money as well.” To sign up for the Challenge, visit FrederickGreenChallenge. org and click “Take the Challenge!” Or, learn more about the Challenge by contacting Sabrina Harder, Green Homes Challenge coordinator, at SHarder@FrederickCountyMD.gov or 301-600-7414. OSER also offers special programs to complement the Green Homes Challenge. Eighty-five Frederick County homes received
energy efficiency upgrades through the Power Saver Retrofits Program in early 2013. Now residents have another opportunity to purchase solar photovoltaic (PV) or solar thermal panels at significantly discounted prices through Solarize Frederick County. OSER is supporting solar system sales initiatives in two pilot communities, Myersville and Urbana. In addition, any Frederick County home can join into the volume purchase and take advantage of the program. Solarize programs in other locations have decreased system costs by 20-30 percent. Local incentive grants ranging from $750-2,500, state grants, and federal tax credits will help reduce costs even further. To learn more about Solarize Frederick County, visit FrederickCountyMD.gov/GreenHomes or contact Lisa Orr, Sustainability Program coordinator, at LOrr@ FrederickCountyMD.gov or 301-600-6864.

Public dog parks offer pets, owners wide open spaces to play By Sherry Greenfield
It’s no secret that Frederick County is dog friendly, with several off-leash parks that are a popular gathering place for owners and their furry friends. The county is home to several public outdoor parks that allow dogs to exercise off-leash in a controlled environment under the supervision of their owners. The Frederick County Division of Parks and Recreation last August opened its 4-acre Ballenger Creek Dog Park at 5420 Ballenger Creek Pike in Frederick. The park is free and includes two separate areas, for small and dogs of all sizes. The park is open from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., April 1 through Oct. 31, and from 8 a.m. to sunset, Nov. 1 through March 31. Dogs and their “pet parents” can also enjoy the park’s walkways, trails and benches. And, if your dog becomes thirsty from all that play and fun, water is available. 16 SUMMER 2013
“We get lots of visitors and lots of dogs,” said Bob Hicks, assistant director of parks and recreation. “It’s very popular.” Hicks said the county decided to build the park at the request of residents looking for a safe place to exercise and socialize their dogs. Though there is no cost to use the park, there is a list of hard and fast rules. For example, all dogs must be up-to-date on their shots. Vaccination and identification tags must be visible from the dog’s collar. All dogs must be under the control of their owners and dogs under four months of age and in heat are not permitted. Aggressive dogs are also prohibited from the park and those that exhibit aggressive behavior must be removed immediately. No more than two dogs per owner or handler are permitted and owners are required to clean up after their dogs.
Dogs and their “pet parents” can also enjoy the park’s walkways, trails and benches. And, if your dog becomes thirsty from all that play and fun, water is available.

Hicks said county crews clean and maintain the park on a regular basis. For more information, call 301-600-1646 or visit www. frederickcountymd.gov/. The City of Frederick has been operating a dog park adjacent to Baker Park since 2008. The park, located at 121 N. Bentz St., in Frederick, opens at dawn and closes at 10 p.m. Owners or handlers are required to purchase a $15 usage tag, which the dog must wear at all times in the park. The tag can be purchased at the William R. Talley Recreation Center, 121 N. Bentz St. For more information, call 301-600-1493 or go to www.cityoffrederick.

Finally, the Greenbriar Veterinary Hospital & Luxury Pet Resort at 3051 Thurston Road in Urbana, operates a free dog park on its 30-acre site. The park includes two separate fenced areas for small and large dogs. A covered gazebo for relaxation and protection from the sun is accessible from both areas of the park. “Because we have the land, we had the ability to build a dog park,” said Victoria Baum, Greenbriar’s marketing manager. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. “It gets pretty crowded in the late afternoon and evening, but it’s never overcrowded,” Baum said. The park is cleaned twice a day, but bags are available for owners to clean up after their dogs. For more information, call 301-874-8880 or visit www.greenbriarpets.com.

Gettysburg readies for its big year
150th Commemoration events culminate in July
BY Allie Hagerman Gettysburg Convention and Visitors Bureau
For historians, Civil War enthusiasts, battlefield guides or residents of the quaint Pennsylvania town, the name Gettysburg holds much greater meaning, especially throughout this special year. Gettysburg: The mere mention of that name elicits different emotions, thoughts and pictures in the minds of people everywhere. Most have at least heard the name Gettysburg, whether in passing conversation about the Civil War’s greatest battles, or in reference to the blockbuster film that came to the big screen in 1993. For historians, Civil War enthusiasts, battlefield guides or residents of the quaint Pennsylvania town, the name Gettysburg holds much greater meaning, especially throughout this special year. This year, Gettysburg will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the battle that ravaged the town from July 1-3, 1863, as well as the 150th anniversary of the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery and Abraham Lincoln’s delivery of the famous 18 SUMMER 2013
Gettysburg Address. Gettysburg, which only had about 2,400 residents in 1863 and even today is only home to about 8,000 people, is anticipating roughly 4 million visitors in 2013 as a result of the anniversary. And the town that was once so small has never been more ready, with many special events and ceremonies to mark the commemorative time period. Some of the most popular activities taking place in Gettysburg in 2013 are the reenactments, which literally bring history to life for thousands of visitors every year. Gettysburg is proud to be the battleground of two reenactments for the special Battle of Gettysburg commemorative period, June 28 through July 7.
history The first reenactment, hosted by the Blue Gray Alliance, will be held June 29-30 at the Bushey Farm. The event will include reenactments of key moments of the Battle of Gettysburg, including McPherson’s Ridge, Devil’s Den and Culp’s Hill. In addition to the battles, there will be Civil War music, interactive speakers and demonstrations and vendors for visitors to enjoy. The second reenactment, which has been held in Gettysburg every year for nearly two decades by the Gettysburg Anniversary Committee, will be held July 4-7 at the Redding Farm. In addition to hosting more than 400 horses and 135 full-size cannons over the course of the event, the reenactment will feature re-creations of famous Battle of Gettysburg moments such as Pickett’s Charge, as well as a large living history area for visitors to explore. There will also be guest speakers and field demonstrations on everything from medicine to music to daily life during the Civil War. In addition to the two large reenactments, there will be several encampments and battle skirmishes in Gettysburg and the surrounding areas during the 10-day commemorative period. One of the most anticipated activities is the Attack of Culp’s Hill on June 28 at the Daniel Lady Farm. The event will show living historians acting as the 1st North Carolina Infantry retreating from Culp’s Hill and returning to the Daniel Lady Farm to receive medical care, just as they did on July 2, 1863.
The commemoration does not end in July. Gettysburg will continue to remember the battle throughout the summer and fall months, culminating in the observances of the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address on Nov. 19. “Dedication Day” will be held at Soldiers’ National Cemetery and include featured speakers, the recitation of the Gettysburg Address and candidates taking the United States Oath of Citizenship. Gettysburg went from being a rural dot on the Pennsylvanian map to a place of both historical and international importance in just three days in 1863. This year not only remembers the lives lost at Gettysburg but also those who thrived in the wake of conflict. Gettysburg has become a destination for millions of visitors every year, and will remain that way, not just this summer, but in the many years that follow.
For more information on the many Gettysburg 150th Commemoration events, visit www.gettysburgcivilwar150.com
An official commemoration ceremony, titled “Gettysburg: A New Birth of Freedom,” will be held on June 30 in the Gettysburg National Military Park, featuring keynote speaker Doris Kearns Goodwin, the singing of the National Anthem by country music star Trace Adkins and a performance by the United States Military Academy Orchestra. After the ceremony concludes, more than 3,500 luminaries will be lit on the graves of soldiers in the Soldiers’ National Cemetery who lost their lives at Gettysburg. Gettysburg has also been eagerly awaiting the opening of the Seminary Ridge Museum on July 1. The museum, which features 20,000 square feet of exhibits, focuses on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg on Seminary Ridge, the medicine employed to help wounded soldiers when the building was used as a field hospital and the moral, civic and spiritual debates of the Civil War era. Visitors during the commemoration period will have the opportunity on July 3 to walk in the footsteps of soldiers who fought at Gettysburg. The Pickett’s Charge Commemorative March, hosted by the National Park Service, will take place exactly 150 years after the fateful Pickett’s Charge assault occurred on the Gettysburg battlefield. Participants will walk the same path that Confederate soldiers did in 1863.

Short Sale 101 for Frederick County by Cassandra Bailey Associate Real Estate Broker, RE/MAX Achievers
Although a home offered as a short sale is often priced below the neighborhood comparables, it doesn’t mean that this is the price the bank will accept. When a borrower owes an amount on their property that combined with closing costs and commission is higher than the current market value of that property, the sale of that home is considered a “short sale.” A short sale requires third party approval for the sale to be valid. The third party is usually a bank or mortgage company that holds the note or loan. In some case there can be multiple “third parties” from whom approval will be required, such as: mortgage insurance companies, investors, government entities, or other banks/mortgage companies if there are first and second liens or home equity loans. With the exception of a pre-approved short sale (which the bank initiates), there is no guarantee the sale will be approved. Often, it can take months to get an answer. Qualifications for a short sale include that the borrower needs to sell due to a hardship, and has had a material change that has taken place since the borrower took out the loan that prevents him from paying the mortgage, and paying the mortgage causes distress. Let’s Bust Some Short Sale Myths:
• Short sales are virtually impossible to do. FALSE • Most homeowners are better off filing for bankruptcy or signing a Deed in Lieu of Foreclosure. FALSE
Short sales are a great bargain for buyers:
Although a home offered as a short sale is often priced below the neighborhood comparables, it doesn’t mean that this is the price the bank will accept. The bank will hire an appraiser or order a broker’s price opinion on the home. The appraisal or price opinion will take into account the current market and the condition of the property, usually resulting in fair market value. If buyers have time to spare and are willing to wait, they may get a slightly reduced price on the home of their dreams. Have short sales affected our local market?
In the first five months of 2012, short sales made up 23 percent (foreclosures 9.5 percent) of all residential real estate sales in Frederick County. During this same five-month period in 2013, short sales made up only 17 percent (foreclosures 11 percent) of the same market. Currently, short sales make up less than 10 percent of the active inventory for all of Frederick County. While this type of property may be here to stay, short sale properties aren’t as readily available as they once were. It doesn’t mean this type of sale doesn’t exist in our area, it just means you have to look harder and have more patience to find it.
• Most banks would rather foreclose and get the home back than do a short sale. FALSE • Short sales aren’t that prevalent. FALSE • Distressed properties are only in the low-end markets. FALSE • Anyone can do a short sale as long as they owe more on the mortgage than the property is worth. FALSE FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE

Building A Bigger Bear
Longtime toy store owners have big plans for the future By Molly Fellin Spence After 10 years of offering battery-free fun, games, books and toys at their shop at 12 N. Market St., in Downtown Frederick, Marlene and Tom England announced in May their plans to move to a more spacious location just around the corner at 15 E. Patrick St. The big move is set for early July, and more surprises and changes for the iconic shop have been promised as well. Though the Englands are extremely busy these days, shopping for new offerings to make available at the new Bear, they took time out to answer some questions about how their business got started and how it remains so successful in Frederick.
Please describe when and how your business got started. Where did the idea come from? What inspired you as you made plans? Talk about where the name originated We always wanted to work together somehow and own our own business. For a couple years, Tom did the craft show circuit with his handcrafted wooden toys – it was a great stress relief from his
work as an environmental scientist for the government. We saw the positive response to non-tech handcrafted toys – and saw a gap in the marketplace for high-quality toys that really inspired creativity and hands-on play. So we decided to take the plunge and open a brick-and-mortar store. Our first location was at 200A N. Market St., (current home to Sky’s the Limit Boutique). Our original plan was to sell all handcrafted toys – mostly Tom’s – but we quickly discovered that running your own business doesn’t leave much time for woodworking! So we sought out other products that met our high standards as parents (our boys were 4 and 8 years old at the time) and as business owners. We were inspired by a love of play, a strong belief in the importance of family fun time, and a desire to demonstrate that good oldfashioned play – whether it’s a wooden baby rattle or a classic board game – never goes out of style.

28 SUMMER 2013
BUSINESS When figuring out what to call the downtown store, we brainstormed in our home office, which is bordered with a wallpaper reproduction of the “Dancing Bears” folk art painting by William H. Beard. One of us looked up and said “How about Dancing Bear Toys?
biased, of course, but we think Downtown Frederick is one of the true jewels of Frederick County. It is an authentic downtown that is vibrant and thriving and so exciting to be a part of. We believe it’s only going to get better, and we feel very privileged to be part of Downtown Frederick’s ongoing success.
How would you describe your business to someone who knows nothing about it? Who is your ideal client? What goals do you have in mind with regard to how you want to serve your customers?
Give some details about your background, education, training.
We describe the Bear as a neighborhood toy store that is batteryfree, a place where you can put some play in your day – whether you’re 1 or 100 years old or somewhere in between. Our ideal client/customer is anyone, because we all need to be reminded to take time to play. It’s just as important for adults as it is for kids. We strive to provide a very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable shopping experience…we want to be the kind of place where you leave a little happier than you were when you came in. We search for the very best products available, hire the very best staff, and do our very best to give back to the community that supports us.
What lessons have you learned in creating this business? We often laugh about how little we knew about retail when we opened on Sept. 20, 2000. Let’s just say we were pretty green. We are still learning something new every single day. Owning your own retail business is not for the faint of heart, that’s for sure... and it’s definitely not all fun and games, although we still enjoy every single minute! You have to work hard, keep up with what’s going on around you, and be willing to change and adapt as needed. We have learned the importance of surrounding ourselves with smart, caring people – truly we would not have made it this long without such a great team backing us up. We have learned that there is tremendous value in dreaming big and doing what you love – and that’s a lesson we try to pass on to our own sons, who are now 16 and 21.
Talk about Frederick County as a home for your business. What is it about the area that you think supports your particular vision? Why does it work here rather than elsewhere?
Tom is a native of Williamsburg, Va., and a graduate of Radford University, where he majored in medical biology and went on to pursue a career in scientific research and analysis. After 13 years as an environmental scientist, Tom marketed and sold his handcrafted wooden toys through local craft venues and the Internet before opening Dancing Bear with Marlene in 2000. Marlene is a native of Martinsburg, W. Va., and a graduate of Hood College, where she earned a degree in communication arts. She began her career as a freelance copywriter while still a student and went on to develop a strong background in fundraising and development. Marlene’s freelance business, England Creative, serves nonprofit and corporate clients across the country. (With the Bear’s expansion, she’s not doing much writing at all anymore.) As retailers, the Englands are active in the Downtown Frederick Partnership. Marlene serves on the Partnership’s Business Development Committee, and both participate in Partnership programs, such as the Competitive Edge Series. They are members of the Tourism Council of Frederick County and the American Specialty Toy Retailers Association (ASTRA).
Please share any information that you are willing to about your personal life and how that may fit into your business life. We have two sons – oldest is junior at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., and youngest is junior at Walkersville High School. We live in Woodsboro, when we’re not “playing” in Downtown Frederick, that is. This October, we’ll celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. The toy business keeps us young at heart – for example, Tom turned 50 this past February, and the only place he wanted to go for his birthday was Walt Disney World. He was pretty excited to meet the Mayor of Main Street at the Magic Kingdom.
Frederick County has been “home” to our family since 1994. We moved here when our oldest son was just 2 years old. We’re a little

Maryland’s New School Standards, Assessments & More Promising Progress in the Road Ahead By Dr. Theresa R. Alban, Superintendent, Frederick County Public Schools Public education is changing in Maryland and across the nation. Many people have heard about Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and PARCC Assessments, but don’t understand what they are or how and when Maryland schools will transition to them. Maryland is among more than 40 states that have embarked on a states-led mission to establish and adopt high standards reflecting knowledge and skills students should master in language arts and math by the end of each grade level to navigate the road to success in college and careers. States call them Common Core standards and established them to provide consistent learning goals for all students—regardless of where they live—so that children moving from one state to another and parents and teachers comparing student progress will have a clear roadmap for academic expectations and working together toward shared goals. The standards are relevant to the real world, focusing on preparation to succeed after high school in post-secondary education and a globally competitive workforce. Maryland adopted the CCSS in language arts and math in June 2010. Common Core standards 32 SUMMER 2013

do not tell teachers what or how to teach; they simply outline the skills that all students should master. During the 2010-11 school year, educators statewide worked to create the Maryland Common Core State Curriculum Frameworks to define the essential content and skills that students need to know and be able to do to meet the new standards. During the 2011-12 school year, teams from all Maryland school systems helped develop model units and lessons aligned to the CCSS. Each team included teachers in language arts; mathematics; science, technology, engineering and math (STEM); and a principal. They prepared Educator Effectiveness Academies, where educators created transition plans for sharing what they learned. During 2012-13, educators learned how to use the new materials. In the 2013-14 school year, schools will implement the completed curriculum. The PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) assessment component is a consortium of 24 states working to develop assessments aligned with the

Common Core Standards in language arts and math. PARCC assessments will track student progress, and report status on a trajectory toward college- and career-readiness. The assessments are computer-based and use a mix of performance-based tasks, constructed responses and computer-enhanced, computer-scored items to measure higher order skills such as critical thinking, communication and problem solving. In the 2013-14 school year, Maryland will field test, research and collect data about PARCC assessments. In the 2014-15 school year, PARCC assessments will replace the Maryland School Assessments (MSAs). In addition to Maryland’s new standards and student assessments, the State Department of Education is launching a new teacherand principal-evaluation system for implementation in 2013-
14. Under the new system, teacher and principal evaluations will include measures of professional practice as well as student growth. The results will offer a more detailed look at educator performance so that targeted and supportive professional development can take place in a timely manner. These are the types of forward-thinking reforms that have helped keep Maryland ranked No. 1 nationwide five years in a row in Education Week’s annual Quality Counts reports. In Frederick County, delivering on the promise of public education means that schools partner with students, families and community members to remain Maryland’s premier school system.

Four Morning Practices to Transform Your Summer by Lisa A. McCrohan, MA, LCSW-C, RYT
When you rush through your morning, your nervous system gets amped up, leaving you fatigued, uncentered, scattered, and reactive to the moods of others – all before lunch! How you get up and start your morning sets the tone for the rest of your day. When you rush through your morning, your nervous system gets amped up, leaving you fatigued, uncentered, scattered, and reactive to the moods of others – all before lunch! When you take a few moments to begin your day with mindful practices, a sense of calm can stay with you throughout your day. 44 SUMMER 2013
You feel centered, focused, and able to respond instead of react to those around you. The leisurely vibe of summer is a great time to form new habits that will nourish you when the pace picks back up in the fall. Here are four simple mindful practices to weave into your morning:
health care 1. Start with a Sacred Pause.
Before you roll out of bed and head for the shower, sit at the edge of your bed and take a “Sacred Pause.” Sit with a straight spine and the crown of your head lifting up to the sky. Feel the soles of your feet on the ground as you relax your legs, gently place the palms of your hands on your legs, soften your belly, relax your shoulders, and soften the muscles in your face. 2. Take three good breaths.
As you take a “Sacred Pause,” become mindful of your breath: Breathe into your belly and heart, and then exhale fully from your lower belly. Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh suggests simply saying, “Breathing in, I notice I am breathing in. Breathing out, I notice I am breathing out.” As you place your attention on your breath, you’ll notice that your breathing becomes slower and deeper all on its own. You can say to yourself, “Breathing in, I am calm. Breathing out, I am happy.” 3.Notice the good.
Spending just a few mindful minutes in your morning grounds you in what is most important to your heart, supporting you in living an intentional, awake life. Lisa A. McCrohan, MA, LCSW-C, RYT, is a mom, psychotherapist, mindfulness coach, and yoga teacher with master’s degrees in clinical social work and pastoral ministry. She has extensive training in mindfulness, meditation, and yoga. She is the Wellness Counselor at Georgetown University, has a private practice in Frederick, MD, and offers personal mindfulness coaching over the phone. Find out more at “The Barefoot Barn.”
We are wired to notice the negative in our lives. It takes mindful effort to turn our attention to what is good. After you take a few mindful breaths, practice noticing the good. You could start by becoming appreciative of the fact that you are alive and breathing. Notice the comforts around – your comfy bed, running water, and a roof over your head. Recall the people in your life who you appreciate. Breathe this appreciation into your heart. Savor the good for at least 20 seconds. This further reinforces a new neural pathway within your brain to notice the good in your life. 4. Stand and brush your teeth.
Bring on the calm with a standing meditation as you brush your teeth. Place your feet about hip width apart. Evenly distribute the weight between the front and back of your feet. Soften the knees. When we are stressed, we lock our knees, even when we are going about routine tasks such as brushing our teeth. Feel your tailbone pointed down toward the earth. Feel the shoulders relax. Feel your heart lifting up to the sky. Here you are standing in the yogic posture called Mountain Pose. So be a strong, sturdy, centered, powerful mountain. Gently hold the brush in your hand and slowly, mindfully brush your teeth. Before you head for the shower, notice the sense of calm within you. These four simple (but not always easy!) practices can transform your day. They are the foundational practices for learning to center yourself and to respond instead of react. Spending just a few mindful minutes in your morning grounds you in what is most important to your heart, supporting you in living an intentional, awake life.

Maryland Access Point; One Stop, Many Services By Kitty L. Devilbiss Community Services Manager, Frederick County Department of Aging
Mobile I&A is popular with Frederick County residents because it is a monthly, one-stop shop approach to accessing multiple services and benefits. Maryland Access Point (MAP) is a statewide initiative to better serve older adults and adults with disabilities by providing easy to access information, assistance and referrals for services, benefits and other resources. Locally, the Frederick County Department of Aging is the site of the Frederick County MAP. The Department of Aging has always offered Information and Assistance, but through MAP has been able to expand into a terrific service called Mobile I &A. Mobile Information & Assistance is offered monthly at all four senior centers and is an opportunity for older adults and adults with disabilities to easily access resources and benefits all in one place. Each month, partners from other agencies including the Department of Social Services, Western Maryland Food Bank, Legal Aid, and the Frederick County Treasurer’s office, join Department of Aging staff to meet individually with applicants to answer questions and provide expert assistance with applications, referrals, and troubleshooting issues involving energy assistance, Supplement Nutrition Access Program (formerly known as food stamps), property tax credits, Medicare/Medicaid and other insurance issues, legal documents, and other timely topics Mobile I&A is popular with Frederick County residents because it is a monthly, one-stop shop approach to accessing multiple services and benefits. The Mobile I&A clinics are offered at the familiar, local Frederick County senior center in the communities of Brunswick, Emmitsburg, Frederick and Urbana. Every Department of Aging senior center is handicap accessible and has free parking.
50 SUMMER 2013
Mobile I&A clinics are offered beginning at 10 a.m., on the following dates: 1st Tuesday of each Month
Frederick Senior Center, 1440 Taney Ave., Frederick 2nd Wednesday of each month
Urbana Senior Center, 9020 Amelung Drive, Urbana 3rd Thursday of each month
Emmitsburg Senior Center, 300 S. Seton Ave., Emmitsburg 4th Friday of each month
Brunswick Senior Center, 12 East A St., Brunswick
In addition, participants also have the opportunity to learn about and take advantage of the programs and activities at their local senior center. Mobile Information and Assistance has proved to be so successful in reaching older adults and people with disabilities, the Frederick County Department of Aging expects to offer additional clinics in communities without a Frederick County Senior Center, within the next few months. To schedule an appointment for any of the Mobile I&A locations, or for additional information, contact MAP Coordinator, Kathy Schey at 301-600-3520 or email her at kschey@frederickcountymd.gov.

Pedicabs offer green view of the city by Tripp Laino
When pedicabs first appeared in Frederick in 2010, they drew bemused stares from many residents – a quirky oddity roaming the downtown streets. But now in its fourth summer, MacFawn’s Green Rides has become accepted as part of the downtown landscape, according to owner Kenneth MacFawn. The service provides pedicab rides for a fee from St. Patrick’s Day through the early fall. “It’s been a steady increase in business,” he said. “I think the first year we came out there was a shock factor with it – ‘Are these guys supposed to be here?’ Now it’s one of those accepted things. If we’re not out and running by St. Paddy’s Day, I’ll get a bunch of calls.”
52 SUMMER 2013
There are four pedicabs, also called bicycle rickshaws, in MacFawn’s fleet, and drivers will take passengers anywhere in the service area, which runs from East Street to Bentz Street and from South Street to 7th Street, for $2 per person. Another popular option is a tour of Baker Park, which costs $15, and takes about 25 minutes. He said he was surprised at how quickly some people took to the idea of pedicabs. Several people have hired the company for children’s birthday parties, marriage proposals and postwedding rides, he said. Additionally, Hood College has rented the pedicabs for use on its alumni weekend. Drivers earn a portion of their salary via tips, he said. Though the work can be physically demanding, MacFawn said he doesn’t
transportation have much of a test for potential drivers. They simply must be willing to work hard and socialize with customers, and have a good driving record. “The job in itself kind of weeds out people,” he said. “I’m open to let anybody try it. You can never really judge a book by its cover.” The City of Frederick doesn’t have any ordinances that directly deal with pedicabs, according to Lt. Jason Keckler of the Frederick Police Department. Keckler said city officials and police met with MacFawn when he began operating the pedicabs, and discussed the potential issues that could arise with the business. “We advised Mr. MacFawn that in the absence of local pedicab regulations, his operators only needed to follow local and state bicycle laws and ordinances,” Keckler wrote in an email. “That still applies to any pedicabs that would operate in Frederick.”
stops. He said the company has not had any traffic incidents with its drivers. He said the best part of operating the cabs has been how quickly Frederick residents took to the new means of transportation. “[It’s] really just the acceptance of Frederick for something like this and the appreciation behind it,” he said. “… This is something that the Tourism Council and the mayor [have] been really supportive of. That’s been really great.”
Several people have hired the company for children’s birthday parties, marriage proposals and post-wedding rides, he said.
The pedicabs follow the city’s bicycle ordinances, including not operating on sidewalks, and state laws, such as that bikes are not allowed on roads with speed limits above 50 mph. MacFawn said his drivers also follow laws applicable to cars and bicycles. Drivers are not allowed to text while operating the pedicabs, and must use bicycle hand signals to indicate turns and

30th annual Maryland Wine Festival to uncork in September By Tripp Laino
Though it began with only a handful of local wineries, the Maryland Wine Festival in Westminster has grown significantly in the last three decades. For its 30th anniversary celebration this September, the festival will offer more than 250 wines. Kevin Atticks, executive director of the Maryland Winery Association, helps coordinate wineries attending the festival. His group began contacting members in January, and as a result, between 35 and 40 wineries will be in attendance this year. Each winery brings several wines for attendees to sample. Some of the smaller wineries bring two or three, and the larger wineries bring up to 15 varieties, he said. The wineries come from all over the State of Marylan to attend, he said. “If you’re an attendee, you’re saving yourself hours of driving,” he said. “There’s no way you’re going to find all of these in a local wine shop yet.… You’d have to drive around and visit all the wineries, and we encourage people to do that, but this [festival] is a really great way to try local wine.” The festival will be held rain or shine on Saturday, Sept. 21 and Sunday, Sept. 22, at the Carroll County Farm Museum in Westminster, and features unlimited samples. Saturday’s hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday’s are from noon to 6 p.m. Tickets, which include wine tastings, as well as wine education, will be available on www.marylandwine.org. Dottie Freeman, parks superintendent for Carroll County, expects about 20,000 people to attend, especially if the weather is pleasant. The festival collects attendants ZIP codes when guests check in, and has discovered that visitors have come from all 50 states and 24 foreign countries, she

“We want to make it extra special for 30 years straight through,” she said.
She has been involved with the festival for 28 years, since the festival moved from its original location in Union Mills to the Farm Museum. “I’ve been to all except for two,” she said. “It’s been quite a ride. We watched it grow from 10,000 to 15,000 and on into the 20,000s.”
Atticks said the festival’s farm setting makes it one of the best offerings in the state. “We love this one because of the setting,” he said. “It’s not too far off of Main Street in Westminster, yet it’s a preserved farm. You’ve got all the farm buildings and barns – we make good use of the site and the buildings… The setting is great.”
Freeman said festival organizers have been meeting to celebrate the 30th anniversary, including giveaways and drawings for

BURKITTSVILLE Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Burkittsville is a well preserved, virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Churches, houses, and trade establishments along Main Street were bordered at the rear by fields surrounding the town. The mountains rose to the west. To this day, the town retains those early visual characteristics. Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam. The town’s inhabitants fled for safety to nearby villages. Today, many of Burkittsville’s residents commute to jobs in the nearby metropolitan areas, but the town maintains a strong sense of community through its many services, social activities, special events, and town meetings.

Middletown Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Middletown is a small, rural community steeped in American history. It is located in the beautiful Middletown Valley that stretches between the Catoctin Mountains on the east and South Mountain on the west. A young Lieutenant George Washington, while surveying the South Mountain area, reported that the valley to the east was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Middletown continues to evolve from a settlement of farmers and ranchers to one of tradesmen, craftsmen, businessmen, clergymen, commuters, and retired folk—without losing its agricultural roots. From the stately old Victorian-style homes and soaring church steeples to the rustic dairy farms and modern housing developments, residents find in Middletown a refuge where they can enjoy small-town life as it used to be. Mount Airy The Town of Mount Airy is a nationally accredited “Main Street Maryland Community” and holds the State of Maryland’s esteemed “Community Legacy” designation. Located directly off of Interstate 70, it is approximately 45 minutes from both the Baltimore and Washington Metropolitan job markets. One can quickly become enamored with downtown Mount Airy and its small-town charm, quaint old buildings, and friendliness that takes you back to a time long past. Mount Airy has experienced a dramatic increase in growth, but because of effective growth management and land use strategies, still retains that quaint, small-town atmosphere. It boasts a booming downtown with community and cultural events, retail establishments, antique and craft collectible shops, cafes, and restaurants. Mayor

Myersville
Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Myersville is strategically located halfway between Frederick and Hagerstown, with convenient access from Interstate 70 to the south and US Route 40 to the north, yet nicely buffered from both by a mile of local road. The outstanding location and beautiful, hilly terrain combined to make the town an attractive location for residential development during the last decades of the 20th century. Today, Myersville takes care to ensure by ordinance and zoning control that its attractive location is matched by attractive development. The Canada Hill development and three other developments built in the 1990s—Ashley Hills, Meadowridge, and Terraces of South Mountain—exemplify the same standards of appearance set by the town. Mayor

Walkersville Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Walkersville is a combination of two villages that were settled by German immigrants in the mid 1700s and early 1800s. By the late 1800s, the villages of Georgetown and Walkersville had grown so intertwined that it made sense to combine them into one entity, which was named Walkersville. Today, Walkersville aggressively pursues fiscal responsibility, recycling projects, and innovation. In 1995, it was credited with having the first State Police bicycle patrol in the nation. There are four schools, residential developments, a shopping center, several businesses and institutions, and numerous restaurants in the town. Walkersville has managed a rapid population growth wisely, enabling it to maintain a friendly, small-town atmosphere. Burgess

Woodsboro Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. After the Civil War, the town developed some notoriety as a train stop that offered exceptional accommodations and relaxing pursuits. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town. There are small commercial activities and service providers within the town itself. Burgess
