As summer heats up in Frederick, a number of wonderful annual events are available yet again in the region. Perhaps the centerpiece of them all is the Great Frederick Fair, set for September 15 through 23 at the fairgrounds on East Patrick Street in Frederick. The 155th Great Frederick Fair opens its gates on Friday, Sept. 15 with free admission for children 10 and younger, and a discounted rate for ages 11 and older (only $5). For more information on the rides, entertainment, and other attractions, see our story on Page 54. We have two special features in this issue for readers. Be sure to check out all of the articles in our extended Frederick Families section. You’ll find stories jam-packed with information for expectant parents, new parents, and seasoned parents alike. The section begins on Page 12. And the second special feature is in our Towns section, with Urbana highlighted in this issue. Though not an official “town,” with no formal government or town center, the Urbana region has grown in population and popularity during the last decade or so. Many news businesses and an impressive regional public library branch and senior center share space in this up-and-coming area. Read all about it starting on Page 68. Enjoy exploring our pages, and the whole of Frederick County this summer!

Plenty of unique resources help serve FIRST-TIME PARENTS BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE
The weeks after your first child is born are a joyful blur, filled with baby snuggles, sleepless nights and lots of questions. In Frederick County, there are a number of programs and businesses that help first-time parents with this wondrous, yet stressful, time in their lives.
The health system also offers free guided group tours of its hospital BirthPlace each month for expectant parents and grandparents as well. “Every effort is taken to present, step-by-step, the usual progression from birth in Labor and Delivery to our Family Center where new parents ‘room-in’ with their newborn until discharge,” Devin said. “Parents who participate in the optional tour frequently comment that seeing the BirthPlace in advance and learning what they might expect actually helps to ease any fears or anxieties they may have been experiencing.” A certified lactation consultant leads the Baby Breastfeeding Education and Support Together (BEST) class, which gives an overview of nursing basics, advice on keeping your milk supply up and proper storage of milk. Following delivery, BEST consultants make daily hospital rounds to assist all breastfeeding patients with nursing while working together to resolve any issues. They also host a free, ongoing Friday afternoon drop-in Mother-Baby Lactation Support Group. “Participation in the group provides a great opportunity for mothers to connect and socialize as well as a chance to gain guidance from the lactation consultants who host the meetings,” Devin said. 12

“In today’s fast-paced, Internet-searching, information-driven world, our programs for soon-to-be parents offer a wonderful opportunity to benefit from the knowledge and personal, real-life experiences of certified health care specialists who provide accurate, evidence-based medical information so that parents can make their own informed decisions regarding the birth and care of their child,” said Melanie Devin, the health system’s Family Focus Program Assistant. “Our classes and services help to educate and prepare parents to undertake the joy of childbirth and awesome responsibility of parenthood.”
First-time parents can also participate in Healthy Families Frederick, a free, voluntary program provided by the Mental Health Association of Frederick County. “It’s a supportive program where (a highly trained care professional known as a home visitor) works with the parent so the parent is aware of reading their child’s cues and responding appropriately to the child’s cues,” said Anne Soule, the association’s director of Family Support Services. They will help make sure the parents and the child are connected to a medical provider and that the child stays current on all of his or her immunizations. If there is any need for other community resources to help (the family), they will help connect to those resources. ...The home visitor follows a curriculum to engage the parent in positive parenting styles and increase the

Frederick Regional Health System offers several classes for soon-tobe parents to get ready for delivery day. Childbirth education covers the physical and emotional journey from pregnancy to postpartum recovery. Baby Care 101 aims to help first-time parents to better understand essentials, such as proper holding, diapering, burping, dressing and bathing.
parent child bond through various activities that support the social and emotional and cognitive development of the child.” A family assessment worker does outreach to care providers for recommendations for first time parents that may benefit from the program, but some people are referred by friends. “What we are looking for is those moms that are facing the most stressful situations and might most benefit from in-home support,” Soule said. “Most of our families come to us through other community partners.” First-time parents are assessed and then asked to join the program, which runs from pregnancy through the child’s fifth birthday. Visits start weekly for the first 6 months of the child’s life, then taper off to less frequently. By the time the child is 3 years old, the visits are every few months. The program, serving between 60 to 70 families per year, “provides a lot of parent education on child development milestones and positive parenting,” Soule said. “It
helps parents adhere to a healthy immunization schedule. It really helps to develop that parent-child bond, which in turn helps the child enter school. By the time the child starts kindergarten, they have great support and great foundation in the social/emotional domain so they are most likely to be ready to learn.” What is a typical class or series of classes like? We have Fall and Spring sessions, a Winter Code Jam and a Summer Camp. Our Fall and Spring sessions are 10-week sessions that meet once per week for 2 hours. These classes involve lessons as well as independent and collaborative work time. Our Winter Code Jam is for experienced students who want a little more freedom to create something of their own imagining. They come in with an idea and work on it, getting feedback and guidance from teachers and peers. Our Summer Camp is a one-week camp during which students work in teams, competing to create the best game. At the end of the camp, they present their game to a panel of judges, which is always super exciting. Summer 2017 // FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE

Childcare programs also provide EDUCATION, SOCIAL BENEFITS BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE

centers are called that because staff are trained with education backgrounds, follow a set curriculum geared toward achieving developmental and academic milestones and do assessments and conferences with parents.
“It is amazing,” Mathew said of the transformation.
“I think a lot of people’s perception is that we are babysitting, but we are not a babysitting service,” said Diane Thomas, director for the KinderCare Taney Avenue location. “We are completely in a different realm from that and I think a lot of people still look at childcare as babysitting. ...It is a learning environment. I think that is the big thing we like to get across. We are always doing anything above and beyond to meet the children’s needs and help them develop. There is a purpose behind just about everything that we are doing with children, even if we are just sorting through clay. I think a lot
The ceremony also presents parents with artwork the children have created throughout their time at the facility. Mathew has seen the children learn the importance of socialization and how to share. These are just a few of the many benefits she has seen from her years in childcare. Many working parents must find childcare options through local schools, in-home centers or relatives. of times people don’t realize the impact that curriculums in the early childhood years have on children.” The YMCA of Frederick County offers onsite care for infants up to pre-kindergarten. George Guevara, childcare director, says he often walks around the classrooms watching circle times, socializing and art projects. “It is actually pretty phenomenal what the staff do with those kids,” he said. If parents sign their children up for classes on site, such as swimming, gymnastics or dance, staff will escort children to and from each event. The organization also offers before- and after-school care in 27 schools throughout Frederick County.

“Everybody knows that the biggest risk for kids getting into bad stuff is between 3 to 6 p.m., the afterschool hours before mom and dad get home and our base program before- and after-school enrichment program provides that care during that time so kids are in a structured, organized and secure environment,” Guevara said. Between on-site and school care, YMCA serves about 1,200 children each day. When it comes to choosing a provider, many parents find the task to be daunting. “I always tell parents when you enter the school, you get a feeling,” Mathew said. “If your gut is telling you something is
off, then don’t do it because you are always going to question it, but you as a parent have to feel the comfort. Go with your gut always.” Thomas also encourages parents to get a feel for the providers you are considering by looking to see if the classroom is full of joy and if the children are happy. Guevara said parents should look at the security of learning centers. At the YMCA, parents must swipe cards to access the childcare area. Dropoff can be a tough time for parents when their children don’t want them to leave for work, but many providers have open communication with parents. “We understand how you feel,” Thomas said. “It is as important to us as it is to you. Your little one is the most precious thing in the world, so there is nothing more important than trusting the people that you are leaving your little one with so for that purpose we have an open-door policy for our parents.” Most providers let parents call as many times as they wish and send them pictures of their little ones throughout the day. The Goddard School also provides an electronic daily sheet to parents to let them know what activities their child participated in, such as Spanish, yoga, music and movement and math. iSTOCKPHOTO.COM/tobKatrina

So Many Programs Geared Toward Kids, SO LITTLE TIME BY DIANA MOTA
Frederick County offers parents many ways to keep their children entertained and active yearround, and many are free or low cost. The county’s community college, library system and recreation department all have an assortment of year-round programs that cover a wide range of interests and ages.
The college offers educational opportunities in a variety of subjects, including science, technology, creative and culinary arts, literature and cultures, and health and wellness. Although the schedule changes from year to year, many of the classes have become a regular part of the youth program due to high demand. The college’s Kids on Campus hands-on enrichment program targets kids ages 4 to 11, while Teens on Campus offers interactive programs and educational classes for teens up to 15 years of age. Classes are held when Frederick County Public Schools are closed, as well as on weekends and after school. During the summer, weeklong morning and afternoon classes are scheduled from late June to early August. More than 150 classes are offered, and most of them span a week, while a few last two weeks.

Frederick Community College (FCC) develops its classes with the hope of creating an “aha” moment that will trigger a desire to learn more about a subject, said Karen Freeman, FCC youth programs manager. Programs are designed especially for students from age 4 to 15 years.
The majority of teachers who work with the youth are certified public or private school teachers, in addition to some field experts. FCC’s home-school enrichment program offers specially designed programs to complement at-home schooling. Faculty, home-school parents and educational professionals provide weekday instruction in a variety of academic areas such as science and technology, creative arts, history and cultures, literature and languages. Financial assistance is available based on need and availability of funds. Visit www.frederick.edu/workforce-continuing-education/ ce/youth-programs.aspx for more information.
Frederick County Parks & Recreation The Frederick County Parks & Recreation department, with its numerous parks and facilities, including several community-schoolpartnered recreation centers, offers individual and family activities for all ages of children. In addition, parks throughout the county host their own activities and camps, said Eric Appel, recreation superintendent.

In addition to offering their own programming, the county’s two nature centers — Catoctin Creek Park & Nature Center in Middletown and Fountain Rock Park & Nature Center in Walkersville — and the Rose Hill Manor Park & Children’s Museum are available for special programs, including for home-schoolers, scouts or for birthday parties. MONTESSORI Offers A House To Play In All Their Own
BY CATHERINE MASSIE, DIRECTOR OF FREDERICK COUNTRY DAY MONTESSORI SCHOOL
As you enter a Montessori classroom, the room will be bustling with busy children, happily engaged and challenged by the work they have chosen. It does not appear much like a traditional classroom at all, but more like a variation on a home or library setting, with shelves full of countless interesting and beautiful things to explore and a real kitchen area to work in.
ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF FREDERICK COUNTRY DAY MONTESSORI SCHOOL
You will see a variety of ages engaged in many different activities, some you may recognize as reading and writing, counting and adding numbers, geometric shapes, a kind of puzzle, boxes full of triangles, music and books. Some activities may seem very different for a school — a large oval line for walking on, animals and plants to take care of, flower arranging, cooking, sewing, table washing, wooden frames with buttons and zippers, napkin folding, shoe polishing, and lots of brightly colored beads to count.
lessons and learning; children receive individualized lessons from the teacher and learn at their own pace through repetition of the activities taught. When you observe in a Montessori classroom, you will see a love of learning. Children are actively using their bodies to learn writing with the Movable Alphabet, to learn reading with comprehensive phonics and grammar materials, to learn four-digit arithmetic with golden beads/bars/squares/cubes, to learn about
You will see children fixing themselves a snack when they are hungry, cleaning up and then going back to work. You will see children meticulously washing windows, washing a table using water and bubbles, scrubbing left to right, top to bottom. You will see children choosing and working on activities independently, with a friend or in small groups. A house all their own — this is the concept of the Children’s House in a Montessori school. Everything in the Montessori classroom is child-sized and for the children’s use. When the environment is prepared this way for the child, the child’s ability to act independently develops and they become independent little people and independent little learners. Children are able to choose what they would like to do, and then when they feel they are done, they put the activity away and choose something else. Dr. Maria Montessori observed that children who are allowed and encouraged to choose activities in a prepared environment become joyful and peaceful. Through freedom of choice, the child is able to respond to his own, innate developmental needs. The important role of the Montessori teacher is to show the children how to use materials and how to take care of their classroom environment. Children delight in taking on this new sense of ownership and responsibility in their classroom.

Lifelong Learners In a Montessori school, children come to play, learn and grow in an environment that offers an abundance of materials for their development. Each attractive material in the Montessori classroom environment calls to the child to come and touch it, explore it, wonder about it and discover the lesson that lies within. Each activity builds skills that they can use to learn more about the world around them. Learning is fun and activities are engaging. Through self-directed exploration, the materials help a child reach his or her goals. The Montessori child is empowered to manage his own learning, to follow his own interests, to find answers to his own questions. This begins the process of becoming self-motivated, intellectually inspired, life-long learners. Additionally, the Montessori curriculum uses the unique learning powers of young children to absorb the culture and nature around them. Montessori children are offered active, concrete, multi-sensory experiences which allow them to gain knowledge and skills years earlier than in traditional education. And there is no testing, no pressure, no competition surrounding
geography through large puzzle maps, to learn about geometry through constructing geometric figures using boxes of triangles, and to learn about plants and animals through gardening and caring for animals.
A Child’s Typical Day Children have many opportunities and experiences at Frederick Country Day Montessori School. A day may include a walk on the neighborhood nature trails to observe the budding trees and flowers. Or perhaps the children will be gardening, harvesting vegetables that they will serve for a snack in the classroom. There is nothing more wonderful than watching a toddler in the garden pick a ripe tomato and take a hearty bite. At Frederick Country Day Montessori School, there is a strong focus on music and the arts. Children love to sing, use rhythm instruments, play Montessori bells and learn traditional international dances. Through building skills in music and art, children exhibit great pleasure in creative expression and extend their learning using these modalities. Music is joyful and students will occasionally spontaneously break out in song. At Frederick Country day, children come from many countries and represent many heritages. The children love learning about many cultures. During our multicultural celebrations, the children try on traditional clothing, sing international songs, enjoy games and dance to ethnic music. Families are invited to share their heritage with the community. Cindi Webb, Frederick Country Day owner, is a passionate advocate for children and families. Her vision for the school is about joy and compassion. “We partner with parents as the stepping stone for children to become independent adults, discovering the uniqueness that allows them Summer 2017 // FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE
23
F R E D E R I C K FA M I L I E S \ \ E D U C AT I O N to dance joyfully into their limitless future,” she stated. “We will leave a compassionate legacy on our community.” At Frederick Country Day Montessori, there is a long tradition of serving the community. Children are taught that compassion and caring for one another is part of who we are. Community work is designed to serve basic needs of others. Children and their families have collected and donated children’s books for Frederick Memorial Hospital, coats for Glade Valley Community Services, nonperishable foods for the Frederick Food Bank, women’s winter hats/scarves/gloves for Heartly House, personal hygiene items for Frederick Rescue Mission, lunch foods for Blessings in a Backpack, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF and gently used children’s shoes for the Central American Relief Project in El Salvador. A favorite project at the school is Grand-friends at Heartfields Assisted Living Center, where children donate valentines and provide musical performances twice a year. Lessons in grace and courtesy are part of everyday work: Children learn how to freely and respectfully interact with each other, resolve conflicts, set a table, welcome a guest, use their best manners and to express their feelings. Children in a Montessori classroom are also free to help each other. A multi-age community is essential in
Montessori education, because it provides endless opportunities for children to help each other. Children beam with pride when they can help a friend; helping builds confidence and deepens learning. The qualities of nurturing and compassion develop naturally in a Montessori community. Frederick Country Day Montessori School is an international community of learners that embraces diversity and nurtures the development of happy, compassionate, lifelong learners. The school offers programs for children ages 6 weeks through kindergarten. Built as a Montessori school in 1997, the school is situated at the entrance to the Dearbought Community in Frederick, off Md. Route 26.

Tips for raising SAFE AND HEALTHY KIDS BY PEGGY McEWAN
Staying healthy is a multipronged effort from the time kids are born, including medical iSTOCKPHOTO.COM/MONKEYBUSINESSIMAGES
and dental health, safe practices, healthy eating and exercise. Frederick County offers many programs and services to help residents stay healthy from birth through later life. Starting at the beginning, the Maternal Child Health Program, part of Frederick County Health Department, offers Special Delivery as well as the Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program. The Special Delivery program provides education and support for pregnant women, new mothers and infants via home visits, connections to care, cribs for eligible families, teen childbirth classes and lead prevention advice. iSTOCKPHOTO.COM/ANTIKAINEN
The WIC program includes help for pregnant women, breastfeeding advice and other information for parents of children younger than 5 years of age. It also offers nutrition advice, health screenings and healthy eating and exercise tips. The office of Maternal Child Health can be reached at 301-600-1029. As children grow it is recommended that they have routine medical check-ups, including eye and dental exams. Regular medical checks provide an opportunity to find health problems early, when, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), chances for successful treatment are best. Vaccinations administered during regular checkups help prevent many diseases. For a list of vaccinations and a timeline for when they are recommended visit the Maryland Public Heath website: http://phpa.health.maryland. gov. Frederick County follows State of Maryland guidelines.
Protect your kids Frederick County also has a Safe Kids program, and is a member of Safe Kids Worldwide. Safe Kids Frederick County works to prevent unintentional injuries to children younger than age 14 through “public awareness, education, legislative action, enforcement and access to low cost safety products.”
Specific areas of focus for Safe Kids is to teach children to: ride safe, wheel safe, walk safe, play safe, fire safe, swim safe and be poison safe. Some suggestions for safe parenting from the Center for Disease Control website are: • Make sure your home, car, school and other areas are safe. • Use age- and size-appropriate car seats and seat belts. • Keep harmful substances and objects out of children’s reach. • Be aware of signs of physical, sexual or emotional abuse. • Ask a trusted adult to help with your children when you need a break. For more information of Safe Kids Frederick County call 301-600-3379.
Keep kids active
It is a member of the Maryland State Safe Kids Coalition and is led by the County Health Department and Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Frederick County has implemented a Commit to be Fit program to encourage residents to begin and sustain a healthy lifestyle. The program includes both healthy eating and physical activity.
According to the coalition website at health.frederickcountymd. gov, “more children under [age] 14 die from unintentional injuries than from all childhood diseases combined.”
The CDC encourages parents to help kids and teens be active for a least one hour each day. Include activities that increase breathing and heart rates and strengthen muscles and bones. Find fun and

with toothpaste that has fluoride twice a day for at least two minutes. Brushing should be supervised until children are 7 or 8 years old.
Included on the website, among sports and nature activities for children and adults, is a section on the county’s Docs in the Park program, a collaboration between the county’s Parks and Recreation Department and the City of Frederick Parks and Recreation Department to offer endorsed programs, an outgrowth of research showing that nature and outdoor activities relieve stress, combats obesity and reduces asthma and ADHD in children and adults.
It is important to remember that unhealthy baby teeth usually result in unhealthy permanent teeth, so following suggested oral hygiene guidelines will have lasting effects. Some areas affected by healthy teeth are: correct chewing and food digestion, proper speech development, tooth infection and other medical problems.
According to the recreater.com website, “If you want to add physical activity to your day, walking is a great way to get moving. Your local parks offer some of the best places to take a walk so you not only get active, you can enjoy the benefits of being outdoors, too.” For a complete listing of programs offered by the Division of Parks and Recreation, seasonal guides are available online.
Focus on dental health Frederick County has a number of resources to help parents to maintain good dental health in their children. The county participates in the Maryland Healthy Smiles Dental Program, operates dental clinics for children and adults in need, and provides a number of oral health resource guides. Parents are encouraged to start early teaching their children good oral health habits. The county website reminds parents that good oral health begins before the first tooth appears. Children should see a dentist by their first birthday, and every 6 months after. It is recommended that children drink water between meals and limit sweet snacks and drinks to mealtime only. Be sure children brush
Babies should not be allowed to go to bed with a bottle, according to recommendations on the county’s website. Children who go to sleep at night with a bottle of milk, juice or sugared juices are at greater risk for tooth decay. Guidelines for adults are the same as those for children: • Brush twice per day for 2 minutes. • Use a toothpaste that has fluoride. • Have regular dental checkups. • Limit snacks between meals. • Restrict sugary food and drinks to mealtime only.
+ Healthy Smiles The Maryland Healthy Smiles Dental Program is available for all Maryland Medicaid enrollees younger than age 21 as well as pregnant women. The Frederick County Dental Clinic is located at 350 Montevue Lane in Frederick. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Call to schedule an appointment: 301-600-1041.

OMBUDSMAN ADVOCATES for long-term care residents, families Among the many programs and services offered by the Frederick County government to iSTOCKPHOTO.COM/VGAJIC
benefit senior citizens and their caregivers is the long-term care ombudsman. The long-term care ombudsman is an advocate whose goal is to promote the highest possible quality of life and care for residents living in long-term care facilities, according to the Frederick County government website. The ombudsman: • Ensures the understanding and implementation of residents’ rights through staff and resident training; • Receives and attempts to resolve complaints made by or on behalf of long-term residents;
There are a number of problems that the project helps Maryland residents deal with. Some of these include:
• Protects the privacy and confidentiality of residents and families;
• Admission agreement contracts;
• Educates the community about long-term care facilities; and
• Understanding assisted living or nursing home regulations;
• Advocates for improvements in relevant legislation and policy.
• Residents’ rights;
There is no cost involved in taking advantage of the ombudsman’s services. Residents, relatives, facility staff, public agencies or any person or group interested in long-term care facility residents’ wellbeing may contact the ombudsman.
• Medical Assistance eligibility (including Waiver benefits); iSTOCKPHOTO.COM/KALI9
Mia Brust is Frederick County’s long-term care ombudsman and works out of the Frederick County Department of Aging office on Taney Avenue in Frederick. She calls herself a resident advocate and serves people living in the 19 assisted living facilities and 11 nursing homes in the county. These facilities are home to 1,800 beds. Brust works a lot with complaint resolution and says she tries to make sure residents are having a good experience while living in both public and private sector facilities. She receives many calls from families who are trying to navigate the long-term care facility system and understand how to choose the best possible place for their family member. Brust visits the facilities and checks out any issues brought up mostly by the residents themselves. The ombudsman position has been in existence for about 20 years, and began due to a need for monitoring federal funding that comes into long-term care facilities. 38

Another source of help for families of residents in long-term care facilities is the Maryland Legal Aid, which offers the Long Term Care Assistance Project (LTCAP). The project provides free legal assistance on long-term care issues in Maryland. LTCAP accepts requests for legal assistance from long-term care residents, individuals pursuing long-term care services, as well as family members, social workers, or others who are helping these individuals.
• Medical decision-making rights; • Quality of care; • Billing disputes; • Involuntary discharges and transfers; and • Medicare eligibility. Contact representatives working on the project from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Thursdays, at 410-951-7750 or 800-367-7563.

Since the Revolutionary War, Frederick County’s boundaries have marked the northern and southern states as well as eastern and western Maryland. In 1811, the federal government began constructing the nation’s first major turnpike, the National Road, which enters Frederick County at New Market and passes through the City of Frederick, the county seat, via East Patrick Street. Located on the Mason-Dixon Line, Frederick County was the site of two Civil War battles. Its proximity to significant urban areas including Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, Baltimore and Annapolis, has attracted many individuals, families and businesses. The migration patterns influenced a rich cultural interchange and a wealth of commercial, residential, public and religious architecture.

style, as seen in the heavy brackets and overhangs, flat roof and narrow, vertical windows and door. This form of architecture is classical, dating back to the Renaissance. The Italianate style was introduced in America in 1844. Col. Charles Trail, a lawyer, writer, poet and politician, owned several farms and country estates. He purchased materials in Italy to construct this building.
Frederick Town was first laid out in 1745, and the original plots remain virtually the same. While many visitors stay within the boundaries of Patrick and Market streets, Church Street is not to be missed, offering a pleasant stroll through history and a rich array of architectural styles.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church, located across the street at 33 E. Church St., was established on this site in 1752. The current building was completed in 1854, the same year as the Trail Mansion, but the style — Gothic Revival — could not be more different. There is no classical influence; the original Gothic style dates back 900 years ago to the Middle Ages in France. Both the Gothic and Gothic Revival styles were commonly used for ecclesiastical structures. Typical of this form are tall steeples, pointed arches, and narrow openings with pointed arches. All of these characteristics give height to the buildings.
Church Street was so named due to its many ecclesiastical structures. In 1863, the poet John Greenleaf Whittier referred to the abundance of church steeples as the “clustered spires of Frederick.” Frederick has been known as “The City of Clustered Spires” ever since. The Museum of Frederick County, located at 24 E. Church St., is perhaps the oldest building on this brief stroll. In 1824, it was built for Dr. John Baltzell as a residence, in the Federal style. This type of classical architecture became popular after our new nation was formed and founded on the ancient democracies of Greece and the republican values of Rome. Characteristics include the symmetrical placing of the windows, central door and elliptical fanlight over the door. The building, which houses the Museum and the Frederick County Archives and Research Center, is open to the public and has served as Heritage Frederick’s headquarters since 1959.
Further west, and across street at 12 E. Church St., is Winchester Hall. The east wing was completed in 1845, and the west wing, in 1857. Named after its founder Hiram Winchester, the property first housed the Frederick Female Seminary, a precursor to Hood College. Since 1931 it has been the seat of Frederick County government. This impressive structure is an excellent example of the Greek Revival style, with the temple front reminiscent of ancient Greece and Rome. The style became very popular as our new nation developed. Many important public buildings, including those in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, have been produced in this design.
At 106 E. Church St. is the Trail Mansion, built 30 years later, in 1854. It, too, was originally a residence, but was converted into a funeral home in 1939. The structure was built in the Italianate 42

At 22 W. Church St., is the former Masonic Temple, built in 1901. The large scale and classical details are typical of the Italian Renaissance Revival style. In many ways this form is a more accurate representation of ancient Italian architecture than the Italianate style. The buildings are usually at least three stories tall with a flat roof. They are commonly organized into horizontal sections, with the ground floor made of rusticated stone (clearly outlined, with a textured surface). Other characteristics include pilasters (rectangular columns embedded into the wall) and round arches over windows and doors. At 106 W. Church St., is the All Saints Episcopal Church, founded in 1742. Completed in 1855, this structure was designed by New York architect Richard Upjohn, known for his Gothic Revival style; he is most famous for designing Trinity Church in New York. The pointed arched windows and doors are typical of this form. Compare this building to the Lutheran Church at 33 E. Church St., built at the same time, in the same style. Our Church Street tour ends at what is today called the Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, located at 15 W. Church St. Designed by Baltimore architect Jacob Wall, the structure was built in 1848. Both this building and Winchester Hall are examples of the Greek Revival style. Wall’s classical design, including the two towers, was inspired by a monument in the Acropolis in Greece. Note how this design differs from the two Gothic Revival churches on this tour.

Frederick County Housing Market LOOKING HEALTHY BY KAREN HIGHLAND, COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR, FREDERICK COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS
The real estate market in Frederick County has been moving iSTOCKPHOTO.COM/MONKEYBUSINESSIMAGES
at quite a clip in 2017. This year real estate has been defined by a lower-than-normal inventory of homes to sell, along with a higher-than-normal demand. The number of homes sold has increased every month compared to the same time last year. We’ve also seen a decrease in the time it takes for a home to sell, more evidence of increased demand. As the median home sale price has risen almost every month, we can expect that home values will increase in a healthy way as well. As the spring market began, the supply of homes was low, but as the spring progressed, and the weather finally warmed, sellers began to put their homes on the market in greater numbers, and the inventory rose closer to the demand. “I’m feeling really good about the market this year, it’s a healthy market,” said Wayne Six, with Six & Associates, appraisers in Frederick County. “In the lower price ranges we’re seeing a lot of activity, and we can confidently estimate that there’s going to be a 4 percent increase in home values. We might even adjust that up to about 6 percent later in the year, if the trend continues.” That said, there are still two trends in Frederick County real estate in general that consumers should understand: Homes priced below $450,000 are moving quickly and are seeing a healthy increase in price. At the same time, homes priced above $500,000 are not seeing much appreciation, if any, although they are selling. “We’ve been seeing a split market for a few years,” Six said, “but now we’re seeing activity in the higher price ranges. Homes are selling and that is a good sign for that segment of the market, and for the market in general.” For consumers to get a good understanding of what the current market trends mean, here’s an historical view of the real estate market in Frederick County:
What Can Sellers Expect? Sellers should know that this is a good time to sell, especially if they have been waiting several years for their home values to return. According to Aaron Marsh, president of the Frederick County Association of Realtors® and associate broker at Marsh Realty, “At the time of this writing, our Frederick County inventory is around 1,050 homes, which includes all the condos, townhomes and 46
thefrederickguide.com
single-family homes that are on the market. We are seeing around 100 units go under contract each week, which is strong, putting our inventory around two-and-a-half months, a seller’s market. “On the seller’s side, you are seeing homes that are priced right and in good condition go under contract quickly. Of the 100 homes that went under contract last week, about 50 percent of those were on the market for only 14 days or less. Sellers are seeing a lot of traffic and showings on their homes and we are, once again, seeing multiple offers and escalation clauses on certain properties.” Just like buyers, home sellers should remember that supply and demand control the market. Appraisers are acknowledging the increases in sales prices, “but it’s not a time for sellers to get overly aggressive in their pricing,” Six said. “Even if a seller with an overpriced home can get an offer, 90 percent of the time the buyer will be financing the home and the home must appraise. Home values increase by steps, so the appraisal must reflect a price that is supported by recent sales.” It’s always advisable consult a Realtor® to determine a market value range before you decide if the time is right for you to sell.
What Can Buyers Expect in a Seller's Market? In many towns and cities across America right now the real estate market is characterized by high demand accompanied by low inventory, commonly referred to as a seller’s market. “It can be a challenge for buyers in this active market,” Marsh said. “When they’re looking at a home to purchase, there is more than likely
another party looking to do the same, ultimately putting buyers in a multiple-offer situation. However, the good news is that you are seeing many new listings come on the market each week, providing buyers more options to pick from. “It’s always best for buyers to get pre-approved with a lender early in their home buying process,” Marsh advised, “so when that property they’re looking for comes on the market, they are prepared to make a strong offer and put themselves in the best position to get it. One of the best things about being a buyer in Frederick County is all the options and lifestyles our county provides. Whether it’s living downtown, out in Middletown Valley, near the Potomac or Monocacy rivers, up in the Catoctin Mountains, or out in Lake Linganore, our county provides many unique areas to find the perfect house for you and your family.”
Advice for Frederick County Buyers and Sellers Using a professional Realtor® is a sure bet to getting the service and expertise that will benefit today's buyers and sellers. A Realtor® is a member of the National Association of Realtors® and is guided by the standards of the Realtor® Code of Ethics. When you are looking for a real estate professional, it is wise to work with a member of the National Association of Realtors® who is committed to maintaining the professionalism of the real estate business. The Frederick County Association of Realtors® (FCAR) has more than a 1,000 Realtor® members so buyers and sellers have plenty of choices when selecting a Realtor® to work with. Reduce Costs, Retain Employees With TRANSIT’S EMPLOYER CONNECTION
BY KENDALL TIFFANY, COMMUNITY RELATIONS MANAGER, TransIT SERVICES OF FREDERICK COUNTY
Employer Connection is a free employer outreach service managed by Transit Services of Frederick County. The service assists Frederick County employers in developing and implementing transportation benefits that work best for the company and for its employees. iSTOCKPHOTO.COM/GERBER86
Benefits of Employer Connection include, but are not limited to, implementation of a formal telework program, compressed workweek or flex scheduling, pre-tax transit benefits and free ridematching and vanpooling services — all things that can help save a company money while also retaining quality employees.
Employer Connection can provide the following benefits: Reduced costs to the employer for: • Operational and overhead costs, such as electricity or HVAC services. Implementing a formal telework program helps to reduce the amount of office space that needs heating and cooling or lighting, which helps an employer to reduce operating expenses.
• Reduce employees’ commuting stress by providing transportation benefits such as flex scheduling or a compressed workweek. Reducing employees’ commuting stress allows them to be more present at work. • Implementing a formal telework program for employees to use at least once per week or under specific circumstances also helps to improve employee morale, satisfaction with their job, and give them a sense of empowerment.
• New hires by retaining current employees. Employees who are satisfied with work and enjoy working for a company with great benefits are more likely to stay with that company.
Neighboring counties and jurisdictions have similar programs to Employer Connection allowing for regional recognition from thriving programs.
+ If you’re an employer interested in setting up a free consultation meeting; call 301-600-RIDE or email transitrideshare@ frederickcountymd.gov. Already doing something similar? Reach out to Transit to get your program and company recognized.

Great Frederick Fair CELEBRATES 155 YEARS WITH ‘FAIR OF DREAMS’ The 155th Great Frederick Fair opens its gates on Friday, Sept. 15, with free admission for children ages 10 and younger, and a discounted $5 rate for ages 11 and up. The fair continues through the following weekend, with events scheduled and rides and food vendors open through Saturday, Sept. 23, at 10 p.m. As usual, the fair will play host to the county’s 4-H club members, who will show animals and display projects they have been working on all year. In 1965, Frederick County 4-H chose its first 4-H Queen by the spin of a wheel. Today, there is a royal court that includes a king, queen, princesses, princes, junior prince, junior princess, and royal ambassadors. The royalty contest consists of resume submission, applications, interviews with judges, and on-stage presence and public speaking judging. The Frederick County 4-H Royalty Contest kicks off The Great Frederick Fair each year at the Livestock Show Pavilion (Building 32). The 4-H King, Queen, and runners-up each receive scholarships provided by Frederick County 4-H and The Great Frederick Fair, Inc. Throughout the fair and the following year, the royalty represent 4-H at public events and provide leadership to 4-H members. In addition, Frederick County 4-H member’s cakes, pies, and cookies entered in the fair are auctioned off to support the 4-H program. Club members, families, volunteers and a host of businesses and individuals pack the Beef Show Ring on Sunday night to bid on baked goods made by the young chefs of Frederick County. This annual tradition provides Frederick County 4-H with the bulk of its operating funds. All of the funds raised go directly to Frederick County 4-H. With the money raised, Frederick County 4-H provides hands-on learning programs for the youth of Frederick County. In addition to the 4-H program activities, there are a host of other ways to learn and experience the county’s farming tradition throughout fair week. Demonstrations throughout the week include bluegrass music, home canning, musical performances, corn shelling , homemade root beer making, butter making, boutonnieres, making plastic, crafts, forging, how to design a patio garden, homemade ice cream, bookmarkers, beekeeping, container gardening and a variety of demos by local FFA chapters. hen it comes to growth, you’d be hard-pressed to find an area of Frederick County that has grown more than Urbana. In 2000, the U.S. Census reported the unincorporated
town had just more than 600 residents. Ten years later, the number would increase to more than 9,000 residents and is still climbing.
Nestled in the southeastern section of the county near major arteries such as Interstate 270 and Md. Routes 355 and 80, Urbana has become a haven for Montgomery County residents looking to move north and Frederick or Pennsylvania folks aiming to be closer to Washington, D.C., yet still live in a quiet, country setting. Villages of Urbana and Urbana Highlands subdivisions comprise the largest communities.
URBANA EXPANDS, thanks to large growth in population, business BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE

Urbana’s most historic structure is The Landon House, located off Urbana Pike (Md. Route 355). Originally built in 1754 in Virginia, the structure was used as a silk mill before it was moved to Urbana in the 1840s. The 12,500 square-foot building served as a school for girls and a military academy before infamously hosting the Sabers and Roses Ball in 1862, just before the Civil War’s Battle of Antietam. The site later served as a hospital for injured Civil War soldiers. It hosted weddings as well as ghost tours until its sale in 2013. The building was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Summer 2017 // FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE

Today, one of the most popular spots in town is the Urbana Regional Library and Senior Center. The library, the second-busiest in the county, features 25,000 square feet spread over three levels. More than 90,000 items are available to residents to borrow, including books, DVDs and magazines. The library also features computer stations, special activities, an art gallery and meeting rooms. Visits per month range between 20,000 to 25,000. “People do feel like they can come to the library as a meeting place,” said library administrator Amy Whitney. The library “is central in the area. It is close to shopping and retail, so people incorporate it into their daily routine. ...It’s such a fun place to be. There is always some fun activity where they can explore and learn and expand their knowledge of the community and meet new people.” Story-times for small children and their parents occur weekly at the library, and other special programming for children and adults is scheduled regularly. One popular offering is Pokétown Gym, a trading card league for all ages where guests may play or barter with each other. “It hits a need that is unique in the community,” Whitney said. When planning youth activities, the library looks at many factors. “We are trying to identify those (educational) trends and needs in the community and then respond with our programming and services,” she added. // F R E DE RI C K C O U N T Y TOW NS The library also recently re-launched its adult programming, after budget cuts forced them to end. Partnering with Frederick Community College’s Institute for Learning in Retirement, the library offers free classes to adult patrons. One recent offering was a Zentangle class, teaching participants the method of creating pictures out of patterns. Officials also are reaching out to a more diverse population growing in Urbana through events such as an annual Chinese New Year celebration, which attracts hundreds. A Diwali Celebration of Light event is also in the works for autumn. “We are trying to provide opportunities for everybody in the community to learn and celebrate together,” Whitney said. “...It is such an exciting and energizing time to be working in a library because we really are out in the community much more than we used to be, and that is a good thing.” The Urbana Senior Center is one of facilities dedicated to older adults located in the county. While most offer exercise and enrichment classes, Urbana’s also provides English-as-a-secondlanguage (ESSL) classes. “We have had 17 different primary languages at the senior center,” said Susan Hofstra, senior center supervisor. “...We have seniors come to the center who would like to be more part of the community, but they don’t know the English language.” So, the Urbana Senior Center staff decided to offer ESSL classes and participants from countries such as China, Pakistan, India and Vietnam have taken advantage.

According to Hoftsra, coming to the facility is “a great way to meet a number of people and develop friendships that continue outside of the senior center.
Owner Manda Mackintosh was a school art teacher and decided to start her business in 2008.
,
“Urbana is very sports driven and I just wanted some other creative outlet for kids that was not a physical outlet,” she said. “[It’s] something creative and good for the balance of a well-rounded child. ...[Art is] a stress reducer. It helps to show kids that there is more than one correct answer to every problem. It is just a peaceful place for them to help gain self confidence.”
,
“We make a community. Someone might just come for exercise, but they end up making friends and going out for lunch with them,” she said. “People who might not normally meet each other in the outside world, so to speak, form friendships at the senior center.” On weeknights and weekends, folks will find Urbana District Park bustling with activity with fields devoted to baseball, softball, lacrosse, football and soccer, multiple playgrounds for younger kids and picnic shelters open for reservations. Before leaving, be sure to check out the Veterans Memorial dedicated to local military men and women who died in conflicts after Sept. 11, 2001. 74

“It’s a great place to meet new people,” she said. “It is a very creative, safe environment for adults and children just to relax and express themselves creatively.” Since many residents of Urbana are commuters, have hectic schedules and are two-income households, Dream Dinners is an ideal business to serve the area. At the store, customers can prepare meals they can pop in the refrigerator or freezer to use at a later time. A national franchise, the store is locally owned by Jamie Carr and Tracey Muragaki. “We are designed to save families time and money and help them get a healthy, homemade meal on their dinner table a little bit more easily,” Carr said. Folks make appointments for sessions to prepare their meals. Everything is already cut and ready for guests to customize each meal to their family’s appetites. The meal and side selections change each month. This year will mark a decade in business for the Urbana branch. “It has really been awesome to see the store grow over the years and survive,” Carr said. “It is hard for small businesses and to hit the 10-year mark, I think is a huge milestone. ...The community is definitely growing. To now have been a part of that growth for 10 years, and hopefully 10 more, or [even] more, is exciting.”
Open Markets 1st & 3rd weekends each month.

The once-sleepy City of Brunswick, located along the Potomac River, with close proximity to the C&O Canal, Harper’s Ferry, Antietam, Leesburg and Charlestown, is now filled with a new air of excitement.

Residents (about 6,000 currently), business owners and city officials are stepping up efforts to revive and reinvent their community. Seeking to redefine Brunswick as an attractive outdoor destination, they are working to fill empty downtown storefronts, opening new businesses and building trails for hiking and biking.

With the city working on a new municipal building, a new music and events venue opening downtown, and the continuous expansion of Brunswick Crossing – a population-doubling housing development – Brunswick may finally be on track to change its fortune from the 1950s, when the railroad pulled out of the city abruptly..

Veterans Day Parade Brunswick’s Veterans Day Parade is one of the oldest in the country. It began in 1932, six years before Veterans Day became recognized as a national holiday. Brunswick is one of only two Veterans Day sites in Maryland to be officially sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which allows official military groups — such as the Armed Forces Color Guard of Washington, D.C. — to participate. This year, the event is set for Nov. 5.

Burkittsville is a virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Today, Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Emmitsburg, a quiet town nestled at the foot of the mountains, offers peace and tranquility. Incorporated in the early 1800s, Emmitsburg was the home of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. She established the first Catholic school in the U.S., that grew into St. Joseph’s College. The property is now home to the National Fire Academy and Homeland Security. A short drive away is Mount Saint Mary’s University. In Emmitsburg you can relax but still be within driving distance to major cities such as Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Harrisburg. You are just a few miles from the Gettysburg Battlefield, Ski Liberty Resort and numerous golf courses.

The Town of Mount Airy is a nationally accredited “Main Street Maryland Community” and holds the State of Maryland’s esteemed “Community Legacy” designation. Located directly off of Interstate 70, it is about 45 minutes from both the Baltimore and Washington metropolitan job markets. One can quickly become enamored with downtown Mount Airy and its small-town charm, quaint old buildings and friendliness that takes you back to a time long past. Mount Airy has experienced a dramatic increase in growth, but because of effective growth management and land use strategies, still retains that quaint, small-town atmosphere. It boasts a booming downtown with community and cultural events, retail establishments, antique and craft collectible shops, cafes and restaurants.

Middletown is a small, rural community steeped in American history. It is located in the beautiful Middletown Valley that stretches between the Catoctin Mountains on the east and South Mountain on the west. A young Lt. George Washington, while surveying the South Mountain area, reported that the valley to the east was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Middletown continues to evolve from a settlement of farmers and ranchers to one of tradesmen, craftsmen, businessmen, clergymen, commuters and retired folk—without losing its agricultural roots. From the stately old Victorian-style homes and soaring church steeples to the rustic dairy farms and modern housing developments, residents find in Middletown a refuge where they can enjoy small-town life as it used to be.

MYERSVILLE
ROSEMONT
Myersville is strategically located halfway between Frederick and Hagerstown, with convenient access from Interstate 70 to the south and U.S. Route 40 to the north, yet nicely buffered from both by a mile of local road. The outstanding location and beautiful, hilly terrain combined to make the town an attractive location for residential development during the last decades of the 20th century.
Rosemont is a village in southern Frederick County, one mile southeast of Route 340 and one mile north of the Potomac River. It is a quiet residential community. Rolling farmland and mountains contoured by Harper’s Ferry Gap in West Virginia add to the tranquility of the town.

Thurmont is a small city in northern Frederick County established in 1751. It is known as the “Gateway to the Catoctin Mountains,” where Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park are located. There are three covered bridges near by: Loy’s Station Bridge, Roddy Road Bridge and Utica Mills Bridge. Catoctin Iron Furnace and forge, built during the Revolutionary War, is just down the road. Frederick is about 15 miles south and Gettysburg is 20 miles north. Baltimore and Washington, D.C. are each about 60 miles away. The President’s retreat, Camp David, is also nearby. Thurmont is proud to have been designated a “Main Street Maryland Community.”

WALKERSVILLE
WOODSBORO
Walkersville is a combination of two villages that were settled by German immigrants in the mid 1700s and early 1800s. By the late 1800s, the villages of Georgetown and Walkersville had grown so intertwined that it made sense to combine them into one entity, which was named Walkersville. Today, Walkersville aggressively pursues fiscal responsibility, recycling projects, and innovation. In 1995, it was credited with having the first State Police bicycle patrol in the nation. There are four schools, residential developments, a shopping center, several businesses and institutions, and numerous restaurants in the town. Walkersville has managed a rapid population growth wisely, enabling it to maintain a friendly, small-town atmosphere.
Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town.
