American Cancer Society Relay For Life – A Night in the Life of a Relayer By: laurie frey It is 6:00 p.m. on a Friday night in May. The event site is ready. The registration tent, luminaria tent and survivor tent are all in order. Lively music is wafting from the DJ’s speakers, and people young and old are everywhere. All along the track, Relay For Life teams are preparing for a night under the stars. At least they are hopeful for stars. At 7:00 p.m. everyone gathers at the stage for opening ceremonies. At community relay events, butterflies are released as a living

tribute to those who have battled this disease, followed by an inspirational speaker who shares a story that reminds us that Hope is greater than cancer. The energy from the crowd is palpable. The night of walking begins with survivors and caregivers taking the first lap to applause, cheers and even some tears. The track comes alive with at least one walker from each team taking to the track. Activities range from those reminiscent of a carnival midway—jewelry sales,

IN THE COMMUNITY As the sun slowly peeks over the horizon, bleary-eyed parents and children, morning people and night owls, realize that they have persevered through a night that symbolizes the cancer patients’ journey—from the darkness of diagnosis to the light of remission. Slowly the hustling and bustling returns to Relay in anticipation of 7:00 a.m., when we again all gather at the stage to celebrate our event successes, and to be inspired one last time by a speaker who reminds us that Relay For Life is not just about one night. We need to be fighting cancer every day of the year. By 7:30 a.m. one of the most powerful visible statements of Relay unfolds, as every relayer takes the final lap as a whole, led by volunteers carrying the sails that sum up exactly what we do through Relay For Life—Celebrate. May 18-19, 2012 prize raffles and food sales—to American Cancer Society mission activities that demonstrate how dollars raised by Relay For Life are helping cancer patients locally and nationally. 10:00 p.m. rolls around quickly, and luminaria bags in honor and memory of those who have battled cancer line the track. The chatter from the crowd is hushed, and the lighting ceremony begins. More relayers take to the track in silence. Some gather around a particular luminaria of a loved one recently lost. This is a time of healing for many. But Relay For Life is a celebration, so gradually the energy builds with “fun laps” that continue all night long. For some, fellowship with teammates or with new Relay friends is more to their liking, so they settle in at their campsites to visit and chat until it’s their turn to walk the track again. Some people nap, and a few head home, but our Relay community understands that we are here to make a statement to those battling cancer. For this one night, we are making a visible statement that Hope IS greater than cancer.

Find your roots

Follow the Genealogy Series in The Frederick Guide to help you with information and resources to discover your family story. By: Rebecca Crago, The Historical Society of Frederick County Have you ever wanted to research your ancestry, but didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know where to begin? It may seem obvious, but for the first-timer the general rule is to begin with yourself. A solid foundation must be established to build your family charts and genealogy. One of the most common mistakes of the genealogical researcher is to make assumptions based on the unknown. Move forward with your parents and grandparents until your personal resources are exhausted.

Making an outline for documentation and a plan for detailing lineage and parentage will both help with organization and ensure that resources are not overlooked. When you document what is known, notes should be taken in as complete and permanent a form as possible. Every time information is copied, there is a chance for error. Consider including a list of sources that were checked but did not contain useful information to help eliminate the possibility of their cross-examination. After youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve established

The largest repository for free family trees and genealogical material in the world is held at the Family History Library (FHS), maintained by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City. Their library’s records include names of over 3 billion deceased, including microfilm collections from over 100 countries. There are over 4,500 branches of the Family History Library, called Family History Centers (FHC), which are located in 80 countries worldwide. Each center focuses on genealogical collections specific to the geographic area in which it is located. Along with providing access to FHS materials, the centers offer research support and free classes to the public. You can find your closest FHC by searching online at https://www.familysearch. org/locations.

A Genealogical Index to Frederick County, Maryland: The First Hundred Years by John Martin indexes names of Frederick County inhabitants from its first hundred years, 1748-1848. All four of these publications are available at the Historical Society of Frederick County’s Research Center and in the Maryland Room at the C. Burr Artz Public Library in downtown Frederick.Both locations will provide a background to genealogy and explain types of resources available for research. Look for the next article in this four-part series on genealogy for information on immigration and naturalization records research, early families of Frederick County, and more genealogical resources held at the Historical Society of Frederick County, as well as other local genealogical points of interest. Your local FHC should be able to provide you with genealogical points of interest in the area, including but not limited to regional libraries, historical societies, genealogical societies, state and local archives, and professional genealogists. Staff at your local FHC also can help explain genealogical terminology, such as the differences between vital and other statistics, and between linear and collateral ancestry, as well as family tree making. In the absence of a nearby FHC, you may want to contact your local historical society, your public library’s special collections department, your local chapter of the Sons or Daughters of the American Revolution, or a genealogical society in the region specific to your research. Also be sure to inquire about the resources available at these localities. Some may have published genealogical resource guides onsite to give an idea of what materials are available and to provide a “how-to” for beginners. These challenges have come on the heels of fallen housing values, a struggling economy and tighter lending standards imposed by the banking industry. Homeownership continues to be a strong economic investment, and homeowners continue to represent the strength of our nation’s economy. According to the National Association of REALTORS®, studies show that home ownership has a significant positive impact on net worth, educational achievement, civic participation, health and overall quality of life. People who own homes vote more, volunteer more and contribute more to their neighborhoods. Children of home owners do better in school, stay in school longer, are more likely to participate in organized activities and spend less time in front of the television.

Why Choose a Community Bank? By Richard Davies Sometimes, choosing a new bank can seem like a chore: a necessary, but unpleasant, task. Perhaps that is because some banks make customers feel like a number instead of a person with individual financial needs. Maybe your banking experience has put you at the receiving end of a hard-sell approach or, at the other extreme, indifference. It can also be frustrating when a trusted bank is partner to a merger and the new bank is headquartered somewhere far, far away. After a while, a weary customer may think that all banks are the same. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone in this regard. However, you should be aware that there is a refreshing banking alternative available to you: your local community bank! A community bank, as the name suggests, is focused on and part of its community. The community could be as localized as the town in which the bank is headquartered or as large as a county. How can you recognize a community bank? In general, a community bank probably has less than a billion dollars in assets, and its headquarters and branches are located in the same

community. By being located in and focused on its community, a true community bank strives to be a good corporate citizen by doing business with the residents and businesses of that community and by “giving back” to the community through, for example, the opportunities created by small business lending and through community involvement and volunteerism. True community banks are interested in building long-term relationships with their customers and therefore are usually far more flexible and just plain nicer than the alternatives.

BUSINESS And because community banks are headquartered where they do business and are managed and staffed by local people, decisionmaking tends to be faster and more flexible than that available through institutions with remote headquarters and management. In addition, rates and fees tend to reflect local market conditions to the extent possible, not the policies created in another state. The staff is usually employed for the long haul; they enjoy the work they do because they’ve chosen to do it. Low staff turnover translates into long-term customer relationships; there’s no “revolving door” on the teller line or anywhere else. Community bank customers do not have to reintroduce themselves every time they enter a branch. In the same regard, a true community bank will typically display the highest degree of professionalism and customer service. The long-term customer relationship does not degenerate into an

overly familiar or casual attitude, because, after all, it’s people’s money and financial situations that are at the center of it all, and these require the same level of confidentiality and trust that would be expected from any other professional service provider. Each customer is treated as an individual, and care is taken to fully explore financial options that may be available. “Rubber stamps” and “cookie cutter” approaches are not part of the true community bank mentality. These are a few of the reasons that many people do choose a community bank and end up becoming very loyal to that bank. The Next Generation of Farming in Frederick County By: Colby Ferguson Business Development Specialist â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Agriculture Frederick County Office of Economic Development The agriculture industry in Frederick County is very diverse. The Frederick County countryside is dotted with open fields of corn and soybeans during the summer and lush, green stretches of wheat and barley in the wintertime. In addition to these crops, historic farmhouses with silos and bank barns peer from the fields. On many farms, dairy or beef cows graze the pastures. These snapshots of Frederick County are iconic, because these

types of traditional farming operations make up the vast majority of the agriculture industry in this county. However, there is a rise in more non-traditional agriculture, which is diversifying the local agriculture industry and allowing farms to continue to be viable operations. Some of the fastest growing areas of non-traditional agriculture include farm

These non-traditional options allow traditional farms to expand and diversify, while opening opportunities to new farmers purchasing or leasing land in the county. Many next-generation farmers see the need to capture more of the food dollars spent in this region. One way to do this is to break into direct-to-consumer agriculture. This practice can also be classified as non-traditional agriculture, since traditionally farmers would grow the products and then ship them to a central location where they would be processed, packaged and distributed to retail outlets in the region. By retaining the crop and processing it independently, the farmer eliminates the middleman and is able to sell his or her product at a retail price versus the wholesale price. This often generates as much as a 50% increase in value. With the rising cost of living in this region exacerbating the cost of production on a working family farm, the need to diversify is becoming essential to the viability and sustainability of local farms. As has often been said, the most successful form of land preservation is a profitable farm. As more and more farmers diversify, the agricultural landscape in Frederick County is starting to change. We will still have beautiful fields and pastures, but fields of grape vines, greenhouses or pumpkin patches – all signs of successful non-traditional agriculture – will alter the face of Frederick County farming. Hopefully, we will continue to remember where our food comes from. So make sure to buy local when possible in 2012!

Every Child Deserves Our Best Individualizing Special Education

Alban, Superintendent, Frederick County Public Schools The Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) Special Education Program serves children who have particular instructional needs due to a disability. Depending on the specific needs identified through their Individualized Education Plan (IEP), students receive the most appropriate available support from a variety of services, such as speech/language therapy, occupational therapy, use of assistive technology or even special transportation.

FCPSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s primary mission is to reach, challenge and prepare every child for success. Therefore the Special Education Department works to meet the unique needs of children with disabilities from age 3 through the end of the school year in which they graduate or turn 21. The FCPS Special Education Department strives to: â&#x20AC;˘ Identify students who have disabilities and need special education and related services

FCPS is committed to educating students who have disabilities in the least restrictive environment possible, which is often a general classroom setting. FCPS emphasizes the importance of understanding each child’s distinctive learning style and modifying instruction accordingly. Every school has an IEP Team that determines a student’s eligibility for services. Most of the time, school-level teams are able to determine and provide necessary services and recommend supplementary programs for the student. A county-level IEP team reviews situations in which the local school may not be able to meet student needs. Schools invite and encourage parents to participate in their child’s IEP Team meetings. These are meetings at which parents, school staff and others with knowledge or expertise regarding the student gather to develop the individualized program that will support the student’s educational goals. A parent or school employee may request the meeting. In addition to the student’s parents, the following people typically participate: • The school principal, or principal’s designee, serving as chairperson • At least one of the student’s general education teachers, if the student participates in the general education environment • At least one special education teacher knowledgeable in teaching disabled students in a similar age group • Someone who can interpret instructional implications of the student’s assessment results

• Others, at the discretion of the parent or FCPS, who know the student or have expertise in specialized areas such as speech and language pathology, and physical or occupational therapy

The IEP includes a written description of the special education and related services the student needs. It outlines accommodations, modifications and services to enable the student to achieve specific goals and objectives for succeeding in school and beyond. FCPS special education services and programs are outlined in the sidebar. Every parent can count on school employees to demonstrate that every child deserves educational excellence. FCPS staff members work hand-in-hand with parents and community members to maximize individualized services to support the county’s special education students. FCPS Challenges Programs serve the needs of students ages 3-21 with autism and/or severe communication disorders. FCPS Child Find helps to evaluate individuals, from birth through age 21, who have a disability. Parents who suspect their child may have an educational disability should contact their local school. If the child is 2 years and 9 months or older and not enrolled in school, parents should contact FCPS Child Find at 301-644-5292. If the child is younger, parents should contact the Frederick County Developmental Center (FCDC) at 301600-1612. Infants and Toddlers Program, offered through the FCDC, provides early-intervention services at no cost for children from birth to age 3 who are experiencing developmental delays in areas such as motor development, cognition, communication, socialemotional or self-help skills. It provides hearing, occupational and physical therapy; social work; psychological services; speech and language therapy; special instruction; service coordination; and family support. Learning for Life is designed to meet the needs of students who have a significant cognitive disability and are not diplomabound. With opportunities for inclusion with non-disabled peers, students learn functional life skills as well as academics based on their IEP goals.

Partners for Success at the Rock Creek School serves parents and educational professionals of all Frederick County children and youth with disabilities, age 3 through 21. The program offers parents individual consultation, an information and referral service, problem-solving assistance, training and support.

Special Education Citizens Advisory Committee (SECAC) membership is 50% parents and 25% FCPS staff, plus community members and up to three high school special education students who collaborate to advise the FCPS Special Education Office. Meetings are open to the public.

Pyramid Programs serve students with significant socialemotional/behavioral/academic needs who require intensive special education and therapeutic services in a small-group setting. Students have opportunities for inclusion in general education classes with non-disabled peers, as appropriate.

Special Education Pre-Kindergarten classes are for students ages 3-5 who are eligible based on the severity of their disabilities. Opportunities for inclusion with non-disabled peers are a priority.

FCPS Rock Creek School serves students with severe intellectual, physical, emotional, hearing, visual and learning disabilities from age 3 through the school year during which they reach 21. Older students participate in vocational training, supported employment and work-study programs.

SUCCESS Program provides post-secondary transition education for students ages 18-21 who have completed at least 4 years in a comprehensive high school and exhibit potential for competitive employment. Students earn a Maryland Certificate of Completion.

My Mom Needs Assisted Living

What happens when an assisted living employee’s own mother needs care? By: Terry Miller I work in an assisted living community, so I was confident that my family would be ready to deal with my parents’ needs as they aged. However, when, after 63 years of marriage, Dad passed away and Mom was left alone to deal with advanced Parkinson’s disease, it turned out that I saw elder care very differently when the elder was my own parent. My family and I had to make one of the most difficult decisions we’d ever faced – finding Mom a new home. At first we tried in-home caregivers, with mixed results. We used an agency, and some of the caregivers were amazingly kind, compassionate and skilled. Others weren’t very dependable, and 54

since Mom could not be alone, we were always concerned about whether someone would be there to care for her. I love my job at a local assisted living community, so it seemed logical that assisted living would be a good solution for Mom. We found a small assisted living home that seemed to meet most of our criteria. Moving day arrived, and with some reservations we took Mom to her new home. We tried to appear upbeat and light-hearted so Mom would not think it was a big deal or feel stressed out. We were convinced that it was the best – really the only – decision we could make.

The truth is that she was fearful and seemed confused about what was happening. Even though her four children all lived fairly close by, Mom expressed real concern that we’d take her to “the home” and she wouldn’t see us anymore. We felt guilty and began to question our decision. We tried to reassure her that we would all visit regularly and be available whenever she needed us. My mother’s transition to assisted living was not without its ups and downs. Thankfully, she did become confident that her family would still be there for her, but we all had to go through a period of adjustment. I’ve frequently talked with families about having realistic expectations, but now I know what that really means. If you are searching for an assisted living community, you may want to keep these guidelines in mind:

� Assisted living facilities do not provide one-on-one 24hour care. If a resident rings his or her call bell, there is no caregiver standing outside the door, waiting to respond. The caregiver is probably with another resident, and it will be several minutes before he or she arrives. Residents have the same risk of falls in an assisted living facility that they would have living at home. The difference is that, in an assisted living environment, there is someone there to help, and the staff will work with residents’ family members to make sure the area is as safe as possible.

� Regardless of the staff’s efforts, some assisted living residents will never be completely happy. I’ve watched some residents move in with determination and optimism. Most of them adjust well, making new friends and becoming part of the community. Some people are very opposed to the move and have a more difficult transition. This can be very disturbing for family members. When seniors move to an assisted living community, they may have experienced many losses. They may have lost a spouse and many of their friends. They aren’t able to do all of the things they used to do, and they’re losing some of their independence. They may be moving out of the house they’ve lived in most of their lives. All of this can lead to depression, which makes the adjustment even more difficult. Be sure to talk to the assisted living community’s wellness staff about any changes you notice. � You may want to check on visiting hours if that is a concern for you. The grandchildren in our family were collegeaged, and traditional visiting hours just didn’t work for them. Between school, jobs and activities, they often visited their grandmother at odd hours. The facility worked with us to accommodate family members’ schedules, which was important for Mom’s well-being, but it may be worthwhile to discuss flexibility with assisted living staff before your loved one moves in. � Look at the activity schedule, and be sure that the facility has activities everyday – even weekends. Activities should be varied, but certain ones seem to be favorites. Many residents at my place of work love musical activities and Bingo, so these are scheduled frequently. Just remember that, while staff can encourage residents to participate, some will choose not to take part. � Keep in mind that your own feelings of guilt can make the transition more difficult for your loved one. Sometimes residents need the opportunity to make new friends and get to know the staff. They may need a little space from you in order to develop relationships in their new home. This needs to happen so they learn that they can depend on the staff. If your family finds it’s time to consider assisted living, I suggest that you visit several facilities and then decide which one seems right for your family. Be patient, give it a little time and trust in your heart that you’re doing what is best for your loved one.

� Facilities try to provide nutritious and appealing meals, with some options available for personal preference. However, every family has a certain way of preparing dishes, and any variation will come up short. No one makes vegetable soup like my mother, and it’s always a little disappointing when I try someone’s “homemade” vegetable soup and it just isn’t right.

Year-round, the Brunswick Railroad Museum offers visitors a chance to experience its huge, interactive HO scale model railroad, depicting the B&O passenger line from Union Station, D.C., to Brunswick Freight Classification Yards. Frederick Restaurant Week

Frederick will offer diners price-fixed meals at mouth-watering prices the week of Monday, March 5 - Sunday, March 11, 2012, during Frederick Restaurant Week. In its third year, Frederick Restaurant Week welcomes visitors and residents alike to return to a favorite restaurant or try something new, as chefs prepare delicious 2-course and 3-course special menus.

“Since meals are priced to offer a savings to the diner, it’s the perfect time to try something new,” says Kara Norman, executive director of the Downtown Frederick Partnership. “It’s a great week to skip making dinner and just plan on making reservations,” she added. During Restaurant Week, no tickets or special passes are required, but reservations are highly recommended.

In a collaborative effort, the Downtown Frederick Partnership and the Tourism Council of Frederick County (TCFC), along with local restaurants, planned the Frederick Restaurant Week promotion. During Restaurant Week, lunches will be offered at $15.12 for a 2-course meal and $20.12 for a 3-course meal. Dinners will be offered at $20.12 for 2 courses and $30.12 for 3 courses. Pricing is per person and excludes beverages, taxes and gratuity, unless otherwise noted by individual restaurants.

The website for the event, www.frederickrestaurantweek.com, will be continuously updated with participating restaurants and menus. It will also include links to hotel packages and other information so visitors can experience Frederick’s historic downtown and nearby attractions during their stay. To keep dining enthusiasts in the loop, the TCFC will tweet Restaurant Week happenings from its twitter.com/tourfrederickmd, and people can either follow or join the discussion under the hashtag #FredRestWK. Updates will also be posted to the TCFC’s Facebook page.

“Frederick area restaurants are producing some exceptional, unique dishes,” says John Fieseler, executive director for the TCFC. “It’s a perfect opportunity to feature this culinary treasure in the heart of mid-Maryland.” Many participating restaurants for the 2012 event are located in downtown Frederick, but nearby restaurants throughout the county are joining in as well.

Bead Fun By: Leigh Cooper “I tell my husband all the time,” laughs Fran Locke of Frederick. “It gives me something to do, and it keeps me off the streets.” Fran’s talking about the bead classes she teaches at East Street Beads in the Monocacy Village Shopping Center in downtown Frederick. She’s been teaching there almost since the day the store opened and has over twelve years of experience. “Our classes are quite popular,” says Dawn Cramer. She opened the store with her cousin Cindy Rhodrick in November 2010 and has enjoyed a thriving clientele ever since. “We even have a student who drives from Largo [over an hour away] just to take our classes. And once you take one,” she says with a smile, “you’re pretty much hooked.” “Teaching is definitely the best part of beading,” says Fran. “I get to pass on some of the excitement that comes with taking these tiny beads and turning them into something new and colorful and artistic. It’s a lot of fun for me when a student shares that excitement.” “Fun” is a word that aptly describes what this shop is all about. It’s the whole reason Dawn decided to open the store in the first place.

“I’m actually a certified personal accountant,” says Dawn. “I’d taken a beading class to learn how to repair my own jewelry. I enjoyed the class so much that when it was time to look for a new space for my business, I decided to find something large enough to accommodate both the accounting and a bead shop. Dawn and Cindy offer an array of beautiful beads to suit any budget and taste. Ten teachers lead a variety of beading classes, where students can learn how to make anything from a basic set of earrings to intricate necklaces, bracelets and rings. “I wanted to introduce something new to Frederick,” says Dawn, “and the response we’ve gotten has been terrific. In just over a year, we’ve built up over 1,000 customers in our database. Every day we see new people, from locals to tourists looking for something interesting to do while they’re in town. It’s just fun!” “We’re definitely bead nerds,” Fran says. “We may as well just admit it. But beading really is a great deal of fun, and the creativity is infectious. Most of the teachers attend each other’s classes, because we always learn something new and interesting from each other.”

Classes at East Street Beads begin at $25. Students can purchase supplies for the class at a discount right there in the store, or, if they like, they can bring their own beads. “It’s a great chance for people to give beading a try without investing a lot of money,” says Dawn. “We offer a variety of inexpensive beads to start with, and clients can use all of our equipment instead of buying their own.” And for these girls, the shop and the classes just aren’t enough. So each Tuesday and Thursday from 5pm to 7pm, they hold Bead Fun. (There’s that word again!) “Bead Fun is completely free,” says Dawn. “It’s a time for beaders to get together, share their projects, network with other beaders and meet new people.” “I love going to Bead Fun,” says Laura Ramsburg of Walkersville, who’s become a regular client at the bead shop. “The atmosphere is just cheerful, and the women at East Street Beads are friendly and fun.”

“We really encourage our customers to bring whatever projects they’re working on,” says Dawn. “It’s exciting to see the designs people invent, and we love learning how our clients use what we’ve taught them.” Business is growing for East Street Beads, and it’s due in large part to that spirit of fun energy that pervades its lively staff. As far as Dawn and Cindy are concerned, there’s only one problem. Dawn says, “Pretty soon we’re going to need more space!” For More Information:

BURKITTSVILLE Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Burkittsville is a well preserved, virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Churches, houses, and trade establishments along Main Street were bordered at the rear by fields surrounding the town. The mountains rose to the west. To this day, the town retains those early visual characteristics. Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam. The town’s inhabitants fled for safety to nearby villages. Today, many of Burkittsville’s residents commute to jobs in the nearby metropolitan areas, but the town maintains a strong sense of community through its many services, social activities, special events, and town meetings.

Thurmont Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Thurmont is a small city in northern Frederick County established in 1751. It is known as the “Gateway to the Catoctin Mountains” where Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park are located. There are three covered bridges nearby: Loy’s Station Bridge, Roddy Road Bridge, and Utica Mills Bridge. Catoctin Iron Furnace and forge, built during the Revolutionary War, is just down the road. Frederick is about 15 miles south and Gettysburg is 20 miles north. Baltimore and Washington, DC are each about 60 miles away. The President’s retreat, Camp David, is also nearby. Thurmont is proud to have been designated a “Main Street Maryland Community.”

Walkersville Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Walkersville is a combination of two villages that were settled by German immigrants in the mid 1700s and early 1800s. By the late 1800s, the villages of Georgetown and Walkersville had grown so intertwined that it made sense to combine them into one entity, which was named Walkersville. Today, Walkersville aggressively pursues fiscal responsibility, recycling projects, and innovation. In 1995, it was credited with having the first State Police bicycle patrol in the nation. There are four schools, residential developments, a shopping center, several businesses and institutions, and numerous restaurants in the town. Woodsboro Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. After the Civil War, the town developed some notoriety as a train stop that offered exceptional accommodations and relaxing pursuits. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town.
