The Mental Health Association of Frederick County: Catoctin Affair By: Jasmine Sneed Photos By: Mark Weinberg

Just as we all need good physical health, we also need good mental and emotional health in order to lead the fullest, most satisfying lives possible. In the U.S. today, one out of every four adults suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder each year. Mental health exists on a continuum. People with the highest degree of mental health are self-actualized: free from depression and anxiety, they are able not only to enjoy their own lives, but also to provide emotional stability and safety for their families and to contribute to the community at large. Poor mental health results from a complex combination of hereditary factors, brain chemistry imbalance, childhood trauma or abuse and other psychological and emotional circumstances. Those not enjoying good mental health or with untreated mental illness often end up in hospital emergency rooms, substance 14 WINTER 2013

abuse treatment, the social service system, the criminal justice system, residential facilities, etc.– systems which typically are publicly funded and expensive to maintain. The Mental Health Association (MHA) has been in continuous operation in Frederick County since 1965. Some of MHA’s 15 programs specifically support women pregnant with their first child; infants and children up to age 5; elementary, middle and high school students; families with children who have multiple needs; people who have lost loved ones to suicide; isolated seniors; children in the foster care system; people of all ages who cannot afford mental health treatment, and families of divorce. Other programs provide support and education to the entire community, such as the 2-1-1 information and referral phone line, Mental Health First Aid training for non-mental health

in the community Though mostly funded through public grants, MHA must complete its budget needs through direct fundraising efforts, the most visible of which is the annual Catoctin Affair professionals, and the annual “Guide to Mental Health and Community Support Services,” which is provided to public and social service organizations throughout the county. MHA believes that teaching good mental health practices at a young age is the way to change behaviors long-term, according to CEO Pat Hanberry. “All of MHA’s programs aspire to promote positive mental health and offer not just education but the support and compassion needed to make real and lasting change in the lives of those served,” Hanberry said. Though mostly funded through public grants, MHA must complete its budget needs through direct fundraising efforts, the most visible of which is the annual Catoctin Affair. In the last 15 years, MHA has been blessed that this signature special event continues to rank high on Frederick’s social calendar.

“People enjoy the Catoctin Affair because we have fun – and that fun is for a good cause,” explains chairwoman Kim Anselmo. The gala consistently attracts more than 400 community leaders who come to “see and be seen,” enjoy a delicious variety of gourmet food, and bid during live and silent auctions. “The silent auction is a huge amount of work, and every year we swear we are never doing it again,” event coordinator Jasmine Sneed said. But since the guests absolutely love it, the committee laughs together and sets out to procure hundreds of individual donations, which are then artfully combined and packaged to present to guests that evening. Silent Auction co-chairs Erin Coyle and Natalie Elder say that the silent auction is extraordinary – items up for bid include vacations in various private homes, handmade art and jewelry, elaborate spa packages, dining excursions, and sports packages. After the silent auction closes, guests are invited to participate in the “event within the event” – the live auction, a partnership with the Mid-Maryland Performing Arts Center. Auctioneer Jimmy Summers will sell offerings such as an ocean-front home on Riviera Maya, Mexico, stunning jewelry from Colonial Jewelers, exclusive outings, family vacation packages, and notto-be-missed private parties. This April marks the gala’s 15th year, which confirms its longstanding success. In fact, the event has outgrown its previous venue and will move to the Eventplex at the Great Frederick Fairgrounds. “Through the generous sponsorship of Grand Rental Events, Design Diva, and Graphcom, we will be able to transform that space, surprising our guests with the unexpected,” said Decorations chair Julie Redmond, owner of Design Diva. The move also allows more space for dancing and the ability to partner with Frederick Wine House to offer an upscale bar featuring fine wines and unique craft beers. “Great cause, great people, and great food equals great fundraising,” Anselmo said. “We look forward to celebrating the 15th annual Catoctin Affair on April 13th!

FiND iT Frederick magazine, a sister publication to Frederick County Guide has launched a new video series called FiND iT Adventures. The staff, as well as a few lucky readers, have been venturing out all across Frederick County experiencing all the exciting things to do in our very own county. Our inaugural adventure was at Upward Enterprises, Inc., located in Adamstown on the grounds of the Claggett Center. Wow... what an incredible, motivating, and empowering experience! Then we donned our roller skates and spent the evening with the Key City Roller Derby team. They practice on a flat track in the old Brunswick fire hall. Such a fantastic group of powerful and dedicated women! Finally, our most recent enterprise was spending a morning with Chef Christine Van Bloom, learning the basics of sushi preparation..as well as enjoying the tasty results of our lesson!

Come Join Us! Catoctin Furnace Historical Society By: Elizabeth Comer Photo By: Cam Miller

Imagine yourself in the center hallway of Auburn, one of the grandest houses in Frederick County, listening to historic songs sung by a world-class soprano. On March 3, 2013, at 6:30 pm, the Catoctin Furnace Historical Society, Inc., will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its founding with a gala concert and house party featuring world-renowned mezzo soprano Susanne Mentzer. Mentzer will perform classical, folk, and lieder music from the 18th and 19th centuries, researched and chosen to commemorate the period when the furnace was thriving. Opera News described her dulcet voice thus: “The mezzo’s vocally impeccable, emotionally compelling performance proved that she is among the premier art-song interpreters of our day. Her rich, vibrant sound retains its warmth from top to bottom and throughout its broad dynamic range, and she draws the listener into the spirit of each song with a deep internal connection that creates distinctive characters with a minimum of outward display.” The festivities will be held at the Auburn estate, located at 12320 Auburn Road in historic Catoctin Furnace, near Thurmont, Md. In 1805, furnace owner Baker Johnson built Auburn with massive stone walls and American chestnut rafters, giving it a formidable defense against deterioration. Auburn, one of the finest historic houses in western Maryland, features a fully paneled reception hall, measuring 40 feet by 20 feet, and a graceful, open three-story staircase. The Classical Revival manor has 19 rooms, which at one time housed four generations of Johnson’s descendants. The land surrounding the house is also steeped in history: Civil War soldiers marched through Auburn’s backyard on the way to battle. In 1774, the Catoctin Furnace was built by four brothers, including Baker Johnson, in order to produce iron from the rich deposits of hematite found in nearby Thurmont. The iron furnace at Catoctin 18 WINTER 2013

The ca. 1810 log colliers house is one of the original furnace worker houses in the historic village and is the headquarters of the Catoctin Furnace Historical Society, Inc. played a pivotal role in the industrial revolution in the young United States: cannonballs fired during the battle of Yorktown were made at the furnace. The furnace industry supported a thriving community, and company houses were established alongside the furnace stack. Throughout the 19th century, the furnace produced iron for household and industrial products such as stoves, fire backs, andirons, salt pans, pots, pans, kettles, and railroad car wheels. After more than 100 years of operation, the Catoctin Furnace ceased production in 1903. In 1973, the Catoctin Furnace Historical Society, Inc., was formed with G. Eugene Anderson, Clement E. Gardiner, J. Franklin Mentzer, and Earl M. Shankle as the four incorporators. The society was primarily meant to “foster and promote the restoration of the Catoctin Furnace Historic District … and to maintain the same exclusively for educational and scientific purposes … to exhibit to coming generations our heritage of the past ….” Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served, and there will be a silent auction featuring handmade village handicrafts. Admission is limited to 80 guests. Tickets are $75 each. All proceeds from the event will be used for ongoing restoration of the historic structures in the village of Catoctin Furnace. The CFHS, Inc., is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, and a portion of admission may be tax deductible. For more information, or to reserve tickets, call 410-243-2626, visit www.catoctinfurnace.org, or mail a check payable to: The Catoctin Furnace Historical Society, Inc., c/o Beth McGee, Treasurer, 6712 Sage Court, Adamstown, MD 21710.

The Historic Architecture of Frederick Figure 1, Historical Society Is there anything that defines Frederick more than its distinctive styles of architecture? Throughout Frederick County, and especially in the City of Frederick, we see so many different styles, and it’s fascinating to see where these homes came from and why they appear as they do. Let’s explore… One of the first homes built in the City of Frederick is one with which we’re all familiar – the stone house at the west end of Baker Park at the Rosemont exit off U.S. Route 15, known as Schifferstadt. This building is a wonderful example of Colonial architecture and well worth a visit. Built in 1758, its symmetrical windows and central door are typical of German homes and a precursor of the Georgian style so popular in America for so many years. Even older than Schifferstadt is an unusual structure on Md. Route 26 at Israel Creek, the Beatty-Cramer house, built in 1732. Though it may look like a beat-up old house such as can be seen throughout Frederick County by the dozens, underneath that old siding is what may be the oldest house in the county and certainly one of the most unusual. The Beatty family migrated from the Dutch Hudson Valley area of New York and built a home whose style is very rare in the entire Mid-Atlantic region. The first house in Frederick County was a split-level, built on several levels and added to in even more levels! The property contained casement windows, also very unusual, and during its time as a tavern and toll house, one could ride up and order lunch just as at many fast-food establishments today, making it the first drive-thru in Frederick. The basic Georgian (Fig. 1) style became a mainstay for the next 100 years, especially in Frederick city, although its name was changed to Federal in a further rebellion against all things 22 WINTER 2013

The Hood College/Baker Park area has wonderful examples of almost every style possible from the first half of the 19th century, many combining two or more recognizable styles. English. Usually built of brick and always characterized by symmetrical windows and front door, this style has some of its best examples on Council Street in City Hall Square and in the building that houses the Historical Society on Church Street. Also often referred to as “Colonial,” this style experienced renewed interest in the early 1900s as “Colonial Revival,” and can be seen to this day in new construction throughout the area. In the mid-1850s, some of the many Victorian styles so common in Frederick were built. Queen Victoria lived for a long time and many of the homes we often think of as “Victorian” came along after her death. The simple country Victorians throughout the county are characterized by their straight gable roofs, usually with a symmetrical front and a reverse gable in the middle of the roof. These homes often have an “L” wing on the back, often with two-level porches. (Fig. 2) Greek Revival/Neo Classic – characterized by pillars, this style is seen more often in public buildings: Think of Winchester Hall on Church Street in Frederick, and Rosenstock Hall at Hood College. Rose Hill Manor (Fig. 3) off Market Street in Frederick is an excellent example of a residential use of this style. From the

housing & real Estate late 1800s and early 1900s, these styles were partly a reaction to the simple Federal styles and partly to show solidity and a departure from Georgian, hence the use in so many public buildings. (Fig. 4) Italianate – while you’re on Church Street looking at Winchester Hall and the Historical Society, go down the street a little farther to see one of the best examples of Italianate Architecture. The Keeney & Basford Funeral Home is housed in the former Trail Mansion, a structure that shows wide overhanging eaves, and brackets under the eaves, that characterize the Italianate style, most common in the mid-1800s. Many Italianate buildings incorporate arched windows and a mansard roof, (Fig. 5) a steeply sloped roof supposedly developed to avoid paying taxes on another level, since it can be considered to be an attic. Many residences in Frederick, especially townhouses, and some commercial properties on Market Street, can be recognized as Italianate (Think: Firestone’s Culinary Tavern). The next time you’re on 3rd Street, and you could easily imagine you’re in Washington, D.C., or Georgetown or Old Town Alexandria, due to the many Italianate structures. Italianate typifies many properties built in the 1800s throughout the country, and is easily recognized in many Gold Rush towns and Western movie sets. (Fig. 6)

so often referred to as “Victorian,” such as on Clarke Place in Frederick, (Fig. 7) and in Middletown and Buckeystown, are actually Queen Anne Revival homes, characterized by front porches, towers, and “gingerbread.” Frequently called “painted ladies,” these homes were mostly built in the early 1900s and their floor plans clearly show them morphing into the popular American Foursquare design. Also often seen in our area is the Richardsonian-Romanesque style, recognizable by a castle look and often-used dark stone. This style was in use at the same time and frequently used characteristics of Italianate. If a building has ever evoked the term “castle” in your mind, it was probably Richardsonian Romanesque – the Museum of Natural History in D.C., and the building that houses Volt on Market Street in Frederick are both examples. (Fig. 8) If we were able to go chronologically, we’d now come to a few very popular styles not seen much around this region – Craftsman homes ordered through the Sears Catalog, and the Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie Style. What we do see are many “Colonial Revival” (Fig. 6) homes built in the early 1900s into

Many buildings incorporate more than one style. Especially in the mid- to late-1800s, often a riot of additional features were used as a builder or homeowner traveled and brought home to Frederick the styles they had seen elsewhere. Nowhere is this more apparent than the so-called Victorian style. The homes

Figure 6, Third Street the early 1950s. Characterized by the same symmetrical fronts as the original Colonials, Colonial Revival typified a return of simplicity and patriotism, especially following World War I, and a reaction to the gingerbread of the early 1900s. Our best example of the 1930s Art Deco is the Weinberg Center for the Arts, which is best appreciated from the inside. Art Deco uses a number of characteristics such as rounded corners and curves, but also often reflects Italianate influence. Most commonly used in large public buildings, Washington D.C., has many Federal Art Deco structures. More locally, the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda is typical of Art Deco. through Frederick and begin to notice our very colorful architectural history. The Hood College/Baker Park area has wonderful examples of almost every style possible from the first half of the 19th century, many combining two or more recognizable styles. While you’re there, give thanks that so many wonderful structures not only survived, but also have become desirable gems of the real estate market in the area. Prices in the Historic District and in historic homes have held steady even as the housing market in general was poor, and increased when the market was better, far more than other areas. In addition, many of the tourists who pour into Frederick would not be here if it weren’t for the picturesque historic buildings.

Frederick WORKS!

One Job at a Time Initiative Exceeds 1,600 Jobs By: Julie Anderson

Photo Courtesy: Frederick County Workforce Services Earlier this year, in an effort to boost the local economy, Frederick County Workforce Services (FCWS) and the Frederick County Workforce Development Board (WDB) launched Frederick WORKS! One Job at a Time, an initiative that encourages Frederick County businesses to be part of the unemployment solution, by creating and/or filling at least one job in 2012. In the months that have followed, businesses have risen to the challenge. Frederick County Workforce Services has tracked more than 1,600 jobs since Jan. 1, 2012, including a large number of positions with Frederick Memorial Hospital due to the opening of FMH Crestwood. More than 600 employers have been counted by the initiative so far for hiring Frederick County residents and/ or creating jobs within Frederick County. Championed by the Board of County Commissioners, Frederick Mayor Randy McClement, and other local municipality leaders, Frederick WORKS! One Job at a Time is modeled after similar programs in other communities throughout the United States that have been successful in generating new job opportunities and getting the unemployed back to work.

Frederick County businesses that would like to join the initiative and become a part of the solution can complete and submit a simple form through the Frederick County Workforce Services website at www.FrederickWORKS.com/onejob. There is no cost to participate, and the benefits of joining include positive recognition and free publicity. The general public is also welcome to visit www.FrederickWORKS. com/onejob to learn more about Frederick WORKS! One Job at a Time, including program updates and a partial list of participating employers. Frederick County Workforce Services (FCWS) supports the county’s revenue base by helping unemployed workers to re-enter the local workforce and become contributing taxpayers again. FCWS also uses grant funding to provide occupational training in high-demand industries to help alleviate critical skills shortages in the current and future labor market. FCWS is located in the Business and Employment Center at 5340 Spectrum Drive, Suite A, in Frederick, MD. Partners of the Frederick WORKS! One Job at a Time initiative include Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, City of Frederick Economic Development, and Frederick County Business Development and Retention Department. By publicly recognizing employers that have hired or plan to hire in 2012, Frederick WORKS! One Job at a Time partners have brought attention to the fact that businesses are hiring in Frederick County.

Excellence Is Everywhere

FCPS Achieves Beyond the Basics By Dr. Theresa R. Alban, Superintendent, Frederick County Public Schools

Assistant Transportation Manager Jeannie Thompson heard Ms. Stewart’s desperation to make school a positive experience for her daughter. She made plans to pay a special visit to the Stewarts’ home with the area’s bus driver, Larry Davis.

Excellence is more than a buzzword at Frederick County Public Schools; it’s what we achieve every single school day for the children of Frederick County. Our goal is to offer more than just the basics, making a personal commitment to be game changers for each student who enters our school doors. Let me share just two examples to illustrate what I mean. These are stories about real families, appreciating the extra steps that FCPS employees took to make a difference in their lives. The first involves a kindergartner terrified to board a school bus. The second is about an older student whose school provided a special opportunity for leadership training.

32 WINTER 2013

Last summer Hannah Stewart contacted the FCPS Transportation Department about her daughter’s panic at the thought of boarding a school bus to begin kindergarten. Assistant Transportation Manager Jeannie Thompson heard Ms. Stewart’s desperation to make school a positive experience for her daughter. She made plans to pay a special visit to the Stewarts’ home with the area’s bus driver, Larry Davis. “A few hours after we called, Ms. Thompson showed up at our home with a shoebox full of goodies related to the bus,” wrote Mr. and Mrs. Jason Stewart. “She introduced herself to our daughter and shared that her bus driver would be coming to our home to take her on a bus ride. Soon after, Mr. Larry arrived

childcare & education and took us on a trial bus ride. He took the time to explain everything to our daughter. “The caring and compassion that these two individuals displayed was outstanding. We are happy to report that our daughter now rides the bus every day and is very excited…. We were so impressed,” they wrote. Caring FCPS employees made another game changer happen for student Dakota Spiegel. Dakota’s school helped send him to the weeklong Maryland Leadership Workshops held at Washington College in Chester, Md. Here’s what Dakota wrote about the experience: “It was really fun because I made a lot of new friends, and the activities were exciting. I learned a lot about leadership and group dynamics. One of the best parts of the camp was meeting a Maryland politician in the House of Delegates and brainstorming ways to raise awareness among students on the dangers of synthetic marijuana. I think MLW has already helped me succeed.” Dakota’s achievement since this opportunity is impressive. When we step up to help a child, the returns can last a lifetime and benefit our entire community. There are many similar stories about teachers and other FCPS employees who go out of their way to make sure students succeed. You can find out about bus drivers Wayne Wachter and Irene Lewis through our FCPS Insider online employee newsletter at insider.sites.fcps.org/November2012. While there, you can see the names of our pupil personnel workers whose refusal to give up on any child has helped FCPS achieve the statewide lowest dropout rate in Maryland. Find out which schools have eliminated minority achievement gaps in reading and math. Teachers and school counselors, administrators and school support workers are making a powerful difference every day in the lives of Frederick County’s children. Learn more in the TV programs and news releases online at www.fcps.org. While there, sign up to follow FCPS via Twitter, Facebook and FindOutFirst e-mail and text messages. I welcome your stories, too, via emails to superintendent@fcps.org.

Cavities? Oh Noooo. By Rob Mansman D.D.S., M.S.D., owner of the Pediatric Dental Center of Frederick With National Dental Health Month quickly approaching in February, now is a great time to discuss the importance of preventative dental health for children.

approach. Unfortunately, dental disease is often left undiagnosed and untreated for many years, leading to unnecessary pain, infection, loss of teeth, and negative experiences for children.

It is recommended by both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry that a child visit a dentist by the age of 1 or six months after the eruption of the first tooth, whichever comes first. Just as is the case with medical visits for young children, prevention in dentistry provides life-long benefits.

Diets that include frequent consumption of juice and soda are the No. 1 cause of cavities for children. Other causes include: chronic use of medications for asthma, ADHD, or antihistamine medications; undiagnosed or poorly managed acid reflux; and use of multivitamins marketed to children.

With proper nutritional guidance, regular fluoride treatments, and proper brushing technique, it is possible for children to be free of dental disease for their entire lifetimes. Dental caries (cavities) is the single most common preventable disease of childhood, and when diagnosed early can be easily treated in a child-friendly environment with a rather non-invasive 44 WINTER 2013

Warning Signs of Alzheimers BY: Cathy Hanson, LGSW, Program Coordinator, Alzheimer’s Association, Greater MD Chptr

Above Photo Courtesy: Alzheimer’s Association/Barbara Kinney. Photo Right Courtesy: Alzheimer’s Association/Chris Kirzeder. Alzheimer’s disease is on the forefront of a lot of people’s minds. Naturally, most of us are afraid of losing our memory and not recognizing our own loved ones. Despite the degree to which this brain disease is dreaded, memory and cognition problems are still not symptoms that readily lead to the scheduling of doctor appointments. The challenge for most people is: when are my changes in memory due to normal aging or stress, and when are they cause for concern of something more serious? Here are some of the warning signs of Alzheimer’s to help you sort it out. Memory loss that disrupts daily life

One of the most common signs of Alzheimer’s is memory loss, especially forgetting recently learned information. Others include forgetting important dates or events and asking for the same

50 WINTER 2013

information over and over. It is typical with normal aging to sometimes forget names or appointments, but remember them later. Challenges in planning or solving problems

Some people may experience changes in their ability to develop and follow a plan or work with numbers. They may have trouble following a familiar recipe or keeping track of monthly bills. They may have difficulty concentrating and take much longer to do things than they did before. However, making occasional errors when balancing a checkbook is normal. Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure

People with Alzheimer’s often find it hard to complete daily tasks. Sometimes people may have trouble driving to a familiar

senior living location, managing a budget at work, or remembering the rules of a favorite game. It is probably not a red flag if you occasionally need help to use the settings on a microwave or to record a television show. Confusion with place or time

People with Alzheimer’s can lose track of dates, seasons and the passage of time. They may have trouble understanding something if it is not happening immediately. Sometimes they may forget where they are or how they got there. It is normal, especially as we age, to get confused about the day of the week, but then figure it out later. New problems with words in speaking or writing

People with Alzheimer’s may have trouble following or joining a conversation. They may stop in the middle of a conversation and have no idea how to continue or they may repeat themselves. They may struggle with vocabulary, have problems finding the right word or call things by the wrong name (e.g., calling a “watch” a “hand-clock”). It is a typical age-related change to sometimes have trouble finding the right word. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps

It is also important for a physician to determine the cause of memory loss or other symptoms. Some dementia-like symptoms can be reversed if they are caused by treatable conditions, such as depression, drug interaction, thyroid problems, excess use of alcohol or certain vitamin deficiencies. The Alzheimer’s Association maintains a Frederick office at 108 Byte Drive, Suite 103. Anyone concerned about memory changes is encouraged to connect with the organization. The Alzheimer’s Association offers support and education for families struggling with diagnosis and those exploring options of care. Support groups, caregiver education, professional training, respite resources, and an in-home Family Care Coordination program is available in Frederick and Washington counties to help families make the most informed decisions. Early-stage programs, for people newly diagnosed, are also available. To learn more call 301-696-0315 or the 24/7 Helpline at 1-800272-3900 or visit www.alz.org/maryland.

A person with Alzheimer’s disease may put things in unusual places. They may lose things and be unable to go back over their steps to find them again. Sometimes, they may accuse others of stealing. This may occur more frequently over time. Don’t worry if you misplace things from time to time, such as a pair of glasses or the remote control. Decreased or poor judgment

People with Alzheimer’s may experience changes in judgment or decision-making. For example, they may use poor judgment when dealing with money, giving large amounts to telemarketers, for example. They may pay less attention to grooming or keeping themselves clean. Of course we all make bad decisions once in a while, and that is normal. Consult a doctor if you have concerns about memory loss, thinking skills, and behavior changes in yourself or a loved one. For people with dementia and their families, an early diagnosis has many advantages. It can give you more time to make choices that maximize quality of life, as well as lessen the anxieties about unknown problems. An early diagnosis can also give you a better chance of benefiting from treatment and more time to plan for the future.

For more information, on these and other upcoming local programs, please call Cathy Hanson, LGSW, Program Coordinator at the Alzheimer’s Association at 1.800.272.3900 or visit the website at www.alz.org/maryland. More information on the warning signs of Alzheimer’s can also be found at www.alz.org/10signs.

WINTER’S A COMIN!

BY: Donald Crum, Assistant Superintendent; Frederick County Highway Operations Well everybody, it’s that time of year again when a chill fills the air, the leaves turn colors and Frederick County looks forward to the upcoming winter season! As for that winter season, each preseason forecast varies depending on which weather forecaster you choose. So far, we have dealt with Superstorm Sandy and just missed the latest nor’easter, with perhaps another on the way. 54 WINTER 2013

We at Highway Ops have been readying ourselves, along with our vehicles and equipment, for the upcoming winter season. We completed our practical evolutions training in early October. We will be doing dry runs on our snow routes during rainy fall days to familiarize our newest drivers with their new runs and with carrying a snowplow.

transportation We are in very good shape with our ice-and snow-melting material, as we have on hand 12,825 tons of salt, 4,275 tons of anti-skid aggregate, and 34,600 gallons of Liquid Caliber. Our preseason equipment fix-up days have been completed, preparing our fleet of 10-ton trucks, 1-ton trucks, pickups with plows, and the rest of our equipment. Our 13 contract trucks are on board and we have a vast array of blizzard contractors for heavy equipment, if needed.

That about sums it up for our preparations for “Ole Man Winter” for 2012-2013. Remember, drive safely and carry your winter safety supplies in case you break down or get stuck along the road. And to everyone, have a happy and safe holiday season.

We are in very good shape with our ice-and snow-melting material, as we have on hand 12,825 tons of salt, 4,275 tons of anti-skid aggregate, and 34,600 gallons of Liquid Caliber. All of this is spread out among our main facility at Montevue Lane as well as our five satellite facilities across Frederick County. We also have a storage site at the Victor Cullen Center in Sabillasville. For additional salt, we use three Maryland State Highway Administration facilities at Mt. Airy, Point of Rocks, and on Bridgeport Road. This has really helped saving on long return trips for our outlying trucks during storms.

Downtown Frederick named one of America’s ‘Prettiest Painted Places’ By: Michelle Kershner Photos By: John Kershner/Tourism Council of Frederick County In October 2012, Downtown Frederick was named one of America’s “Prettiest Painted Places” in a national competition that identified the nation’s 12 most beautifully painted neighborhoods and towns.

are pleased that the judges agreed with us that Frederick is indeed one of America’s prettiest painted places,” says Michelle Kershner, marketing and communication manager for the Tourism Council of Frederick County.

Downtown Frederick was nominated by the Tourism Council of Frederick County, which worked with the Downtown Frederick Partnership to identify 21 images that best represented the colorful architecture in the downtown area.

Downtown Frederick was selected from nearly 200 nominees from 48 states and the District of Columbia that submitted color images of beautifully painted homes, buildings and exterior murals. A panel of judges with expertise in paint and exterior color schemes reviewed the entries and named two winners from each of six different geographic areas. Downtown Frederick was chosen as one of the winners in the Northeast Region.

“With our brilliantly painted historic buildings that date to the 1700s and numerous murals throughout downtown, we 58 WINTER 2013

arts & Leisure Residential homes represent a large portion of the beautifully painted buildings in town, but businesses in the commercial district also show creative colors. Thanks to a façade improvement program in the downtown area, business owners may receive assistance in improving the exterior of their buildings. “Over the course of the entire program, more than 50 façades and more than $150,000 in matching funds have assisted business owners in improving the exterior of their buildings,” Downtown Frederick Partnership Executive Director Kara Norman said. “Painting is a significant portion of the work completed.” This is the third time the Paint Quality Institute has conducted a search for the prettiest painted places in America. It held the first competition in the 1990s, and another in year 2000. The purpose of the competition is to give recognition to places that use paint to express pride in their communities, and highlight how an attractive exterior paint treatment can enhance the curb appeal of virtually any home, building or exterior structure.

Photographs for the nomination were provided by William Cochran, John Kershner, Andrew Murdock, Doug Via, Michelle Kershner and Eli Roth. Paint This! By: Molly Spence

When you enter I Made This: a paint-your-own pottery studio in Downtown Frederick, seemingly endless possibilities stretch out in front of you. Lined up neatly on dozens of shelves sit clean, white pottery pieces, just waiting to be painted. Rows and rows of small bottles of glaze, and cups filled with all sizes and shapes of paintbrushes, sponges, and other implements stand ready. With so many choices, it could take hours to choose a project. Should it be a plate? Large or small? Or maybe an animal figurine, or a vase, a mug, tissue box, a light switch cover, or a teapot? Once that is chosen, then move on to the racks of glazes. Red or blue? Speckled or not? Or maybe you should use one of an assortment of puff paint to add detail? Now, will you use stamps or stencils or go freehand? Sponges leave interesting patterns. Or perhaps a cotton swab will give the desired effect? On any given day, the painting studio is filled with everyone from small children looking to create, and likely make a mess in the process, to young adults, concentrating closely on a near 60 WINTER 2013

masterpiece, to older artists. Regardless of age or skill level, all seem to take their tasks very seriously, keeping a close eye on their projects from start to finish. The process of creating a masterpiece can take hours, and that’s fine. When you pay for your pottery piece, you add 50 percent of that price to the total to account for as much painting time as you need. Special events occur often at the studio, including Ladies Night, which is every Thursday night. Guests receive 20 percent off the price of their pottery. Also available is a private party room for birthday parties, showers, or other events. I Made This is an exciting, fun space where creativity is celebrated. Plenty of opportunities to let your creative side shine abound.

BURKITTSVILLE Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Burkittsville is a well preserved, virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Churches, houses, and trade establishments along Main Street were bordered at the rear by fields surrounding the town. The mountains rose to the west. To this day, the town retains those early visual characteristics. Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam. The town’s inhabitants fled for safety to nearby villages. Today, many of Burkittsville’s residents commute to jobs in the nearby metropolitan areas, but the town maintains a strong sense of community through its many services, social activities, special events, and town meetings.

Middletown Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Middletown is a small, rural community steeped in American history. It is located in the beautiful Middletown Valley that stretches between the Catoctin Mountains on the east and South Mountain on the west. A young Lieutenant George Washington, while surveying the South Mountain area, reported that the valley to the east was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Middletown continues to evolve from a settlement of farmers and ranchers to one of tradesmen, craftsmen, businessmen, clergymen, commuters, and retired folk—without losing its agricultural roots. From the stately old Victorian-style homes and soaring church steeples to the rustic dairy farms and modern housing developments, residents find in Middletown a refuge where they can enjoy small-town life as it used to be. Myersville

Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Myersville is strategically located halfway between Frederick and Hagerstown, with convenient access from Interstate 70 to the south and US Route 40 to the north, yet nicely buffered from both by a mile of local road. The outstanding location and beautiful, hilly terrain combined to make the town an attractive location for residential development during the last decades of the 20th century. Today, Myersville takes care to ensure by ordinance and zoning control that its attractive location is matched by attractive development. The Canada Hill development and three other developments built in the 1990s—Ashley Hills, Meadowridge, and Terraces of South Mountain—exemplify the same standards of appearance set by the town. Walkersville Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Walkersville is a combination of two villages that were settled by German immigrants in the mid 1700s and early 1800s. By the late 1800s, the villages of Georgetown and Walkersville had grown so intertwined that it made sense to combine them into one entity, which was named Walkersville. Today, Walkersville aggressively pursues fiscal responsibility, recycling projects, and innovation. In 1995, it was credited with having the first State Police bicycle patrol in the nation. There are four schools, residential developments, a shopping center, several businesses and institutions, and numerous restaurants in the town. Walkersville has managed a rapid population growth wisely, enabling it to maintain a friendly, small-town atmosphere. Burgess

Woodsboro Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. After the Civil War, the town developed some notoriety as a train stop that offered exceptional accommodations and relaxing pursuits. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town. There are small commercial activities and service providers within the town itself. Burgess
