Five Mindfulness Tips for Happier Holidays By Lisa A. McCrohan, MA, LCSW-C, RYT

Let’s face it; the holiday season can be a hectic time. Filled with list making, high expectations, and party invitations, the festivities of the season can cause us to get caught up in the stress instead of savoring the joy. So, here are five mindfulness tips for staying sane and coming back to what’s most important during the holidays. Drop the “perfect.”

We live in a culture focused on perfection. Soon we’ll start to see images of perfectly decorated homes, perfectly roasted turkeys and families all getting along perfectly. We can look at our halfdecorated Christmas tree, dishes in the sink, store-bought meals, and fighting children and get anxious, thinking, “Why am I not perfect, too?” No. This season, every time you begin to think, “It’s not perfect!” Say to yourself, “It’s perfectly imperfect.” When we stop striving for perfection, we stop expecting ourselves, and others, to meet impossible standards. We give ourselves, and others, a break. We allow ourselves, and others, to be human.

10 FALL 2013

Drop the critic.

We can say some pretty harsh things to ourselves and to those closest to us. The moment you realize you have been judging yourself or one of your dear ones too harshly, pause, feel your feet on the earth, exhale from your belly, and say to yourself, “Soften.” Soften the muscles in your body, your judgment, and the space around your heart. Ironically, by dropping the critic and softening, we motivate ourselves to be the person we know we want to be and we invite in more love around us. Focus on what matters most.

When you find that you are getting stressed out, pause and ask yourself, “Is this a big deal?” You could even rate how big of a deal it is, 1 through 10. This starts to get us out of stress mode and get us thinking more clearly. More often than not, we are taking on too much responsibility, trying to do it all perfectly, focusing on the little stuff, and struggling to keep it all together. Instead, let some of it go.

in the community We can say some pretty harsh things to ourselves and to those closest to us. The moment you realize you have been judging yourself or one of your dear ones too harshly, pause, feel your feet on the earth, exhale from your belly, and say to yourself, “Soften.” Embrace gratitude.

Noticing “the good” in our lives takes practice. This holiday season, pause every day, look around you, find something in your life that you are grateful for, and soak it up. Savor it for 20 to 30 seconds, long enough to start building new neural pathways that will orient your mind toward gratitude. Forgive.

Ask yourself, “Do I want to be right or do I want to be happy?” Ask yourself, “Does it feel good to keep my heart closed off?” Every time you feel like you “mess up” by reacting poorly to your dear ones, put your hand on your heart, exhale, and say, “Forgiven.” As you learn to forgive yourself, you’ll find yourself more easily softening your judgment of others and forgiving them. You’ll find yourself feeling happier and more able to see the blessings in your life.

This holiday season, practice these mindfulness tips. Give yourself the gift of a season filled with less hustle, busy, and worry, and more delight, compassion, connection, and peace.

Frederick Food Tours offer a foodie’s view of downtown By Tripp Laino

Sarah Withers hopes you’re hungry. Withers, a Frederick native, is the owner of Taste Frederick Food Tours, a walking tour of Downtown Frederick. The tours cost $50 per person, and allows participants to visit six food locations in Frederick, including Brewer’s Alley Restaurant and Lebherz Oil & Vinegar Emporium, over a three-hour period. Withers created the tours last year, and runs them Wednesdays through Sundays. Each tour can accommodate up to 12 people, Withers said. Writer of the food blog www.foodinfrederick.com, Withers has since taken a pause from the blog scene to concentrate on the tours. Writing the blog helped form the basis of the tour business, she said. “Through that I developed this love of downtown,” Withers said. “I live downtown. I really like to cook myself - really, I just like food.” The idea to turn her love of food and Downtown Frederick into a business came after a trip Withers took to New York City with her fiancé, during which she participated in a similar tour. “I was just so smitten with the idea of a walking food tour,” she said. “We didn’t have one in Downtown Frederick.” Working with a Chicago-based company, Food Tour Pros, Withers refined the idea, and tours began in June 2012. The Downtown Frederick route covers three restaurants and three specialty food shops. Withers said when she first approached some of the restaurants about the idea, they were skeptical, but quickly came around.

The tours cover more than just food, she said; tour guides also discuss a little bit of Frederick’s history and architecture as they pass various buildings downtown. “The tour guide kind of does all the talking,” she said. “We do our best to not interrupt the restaurant. We’ve come up with a script about what [participants are] tasting, about the history of the business. ... It’s a kind of history and fun presentation.” Kara Norman, executive director of The Downtown Frederick Partnership, said the tours help showcase Frederick’s vibrant dining scene. “It’s a fantastic vehicle to promote Downtown Frederick,” Norman said. “Obviously, we have a wonderful culinary scene here. The great thing, I think, about Sarah’s tour, is it also includes the other foodie places that aren’t necessarily a sandwich shop or a restaurant.” Norman said the tours are a good way to bring visitors to the city, as well as provide entertainment for locals. “I’ve personally gone on food tours when I visited other cities,” Norman said. “It’s a wonderful way to get a walking tour of the community and find out about the amenities it offers.” For Withers, the best part about the tour is showing off her hometown. “I get to brag about Frederick for about three hours every time I give a tour,” she said.

HISTORY

A Jolly Old… Dirigible? by Heidi Campbell-Shoaf

Come take a Trip in my Airship, Come sail away to the stars! We’ll travel to Venus, We’ll sail away to Mars! No one will see while we’re kissing No one will know as we swoon. So come take a Trip in my Airship, And we’ll visit the Man in the Moon! The chorus from J.W. Myers’ catchy song “Come Take a Trip in My Airship,” written in 1904, describes the fascination and romance surrounding the lighter-than-air craft. Airships or dirigibles or zeppelins, later known as blimps, were the only steerable mode of flight when they were first introduced in 1900 in Germany. (Not until 1903, did the Wright brothers make their first brief flight in their flying machine on a North Carolina beach.) Zeppelins started to show up in all kinds of places, on the cover of sheet music, as toys and even on Christmas trees. At the turn of the 20th century, many toys and Christmas ornaments came from Germany, so it would stand to reason that they would be the first to capitalize on their national achievement. Ornaments like this one, were made in Dresden where for decades, paper and tinsel, foil and cardboard were pressed and glued and shaped into a wide array of holiday goods. This particular airship, with Santa and a fir tree riding in the gondola, belonged to Herbert Staley who was born in 1916 and lived on his family’s farm near Pleasant Hill Church, just outside of Frederick. The ornament was more than just a decoration for the tree, it once held candy in its oblong cardboard blimp.

One of the great treats of Christmas, for children and adults alike, was the opportunity to indulge in sweets that were either unavailable or impractical at other times of year. Some of the first tree ornaments included cookies and paper cones filled with sugared nuts or hard candy. German manufactures took this idea and started creating containers where the candy could stay hidden from view until the holiday arrived.

Frederick’s Recovering Real Estate Market By Cheryl Poirier, Realtor, Re/max Results

Even though the numbers look strong, buyers and sellers are still cautiously entering the market, armed with questions and concerns. Walk into a busy real estate office on any given day this month, and it will quickly become obvious that the real estate market is bouncing back in Frederick, and recovering with a vengeance. The receptionist is busy transferring calls, the conference rooms are filled with Realtors writing up offers for their nervous buyers and contracts are being negotiated behind closed doors. The local market is undeniably robust and healthy, a welcome change for Frederick area homeowners and homebuyers who endured a tumultuous market over the past seven years. Residents of Frederick County see the signs of a recovering market on every corner lately. Not since the end of 2006 have local residents seen “For Sale” signs posted in a neighbor’s yard with an “Under Contract” rider added so quickly and a “Sold” sign posted soon after. This simple sequence of sign postings has given hope to area homeowners. Not long ago, listings languished on the market with no offers or contracts in sight. The average days on market for a listing in Frederick County swelled to a high of 160 days in March 2009. By August 2013, that number decreased to an average of 53 days. The median sales price, which bottomed out in January 2012 at $196,450,

increased to $282,750 in July 2013. Clearly the market is on an upturn in the Frederick region. Even though the numbers look strong, buyers and sellers are still cautiously entering the market, armed with questions and concerns. Buyers are wondering if it’s still a good time to take the plunge into homeownership. Darren Chamblee, senior loan officer with George Mason Mortgage says, “If someone is buying for the long term, primary residence or investment, I do think it is a good time to buy. No, it’s not quite as good a time as it was six months ago, but if prices and rates continue to rise, those who need a house are going to wish they bought sooner rather than later.” Sellers are also asking questions, “Have homes in the area started to appreciate significantly? And if they are, shouldn’t we wait until next year to put our house on the market?” When asked about the local market and if it’s a good time to sell, Wayne Six, appraiser with Six and Associates, said, “Our lowercontinued pg. 25 FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE

housing & real estate end market ($250,000 and under) has experienced a 10% to 12% appreciation over the last 12 months. For the first time in seven years we have been making positive time adjustments in this price range to reflect these increases. “Some homeowners think they should wait a year or so to put their house on the market when they can get a better price. That is fine if they’re going to sell and rent. But if they are going to buy another house, the house they want to buy is going to increase also, so the difference in value is the same. Homeowners would actually be better off to sell now while the interest rates are low in this scenario.” The next question that homeowners are asking is, “How much is my house worth and how should I price it? The best answer is to talk to your trusted real estate agent. He or she knows the market, knows buyers and have proven pricing strategies for a successful sale. Appraiser Wayne Six explains a successful pricing strategy: “Pricing your home realistically is critical to obtaining the absolute best price. I constantly see people overprice their homes and end up selling for less than if they had priced it right in the first place. As an example, let’s say a house is worth $400,000 and the seller decides

to ask $475,000. What typically happens is there are relatively few showings and buyers who look at the house realize it’s overpriced and the seller is getting nowhere in terms of marketability of the house. The overpriced house actually makes other competitive houses look like a good buy and helps the competition to sell. Even if the seller found a novice buyer from out of state who was willing to pay $475,000, most buyers need financing and the appraisal is going to come in around $400,000 so you are back to square one. What typically happens in this scenario is the house sits for several months and when the seller finally gets down to where they should be at $400,000, the house now has “shelf life” and prospective buyers wonder why the house has been on the market for so long and the house ends up selling for $375,000.” Local experts are standing by to help both buyers and sellers with these questions and more, because the best thing that could happen for the future of Frederick real estate would be to have a county full of well-informed buyers and sellers. EDUCATION

County’s newest school offers ‘Classical’ education Submitted by Sue Middleton, Community Outreach Director, Frederick Classical Charter School

The principal, staff, and school improvement team will look first to data and evidence to better school performance, with the guiding criteria that each enhancement should be specific, replicable, and monitored to validate that it achieves its intended results. Frederick Classical Charter School became the third public charter school to open its doors in Frederick County in August. The school opened in Frederick with 280 pupils, in grades kindergarten through sixth. During the next two years, grades seven and eight will be added, until full capacity of 360 students is reached. The Frederick Classical Charter School is a public school, paid for by taxpayer dollars. It is non-religious, tuition-free, and there is no criteria for student enrollment other than students must be Frederick County residents. The school was created from the vision of Frederick County parents who were looking for an alternative approach to the education available in the county. According to parent organizers, the students have been up for the challenges of the school’s high expectations during the first few weeks of the new school. Children are becoming well versed in proper behavior and manners.

32 FALL 2013

The mission of the Frederick Classical Charter School is to provide elementary and middle school-aged children with a well-rounded, college-focused instructional program that develops students’ knowledge, reason, and self-expression. Through its Summer Institute and in-service training, the school will provide teachers with professional development in subject matter content, cognitive science, and researchbased pedagogy. The principal, staff, and school improvement team will look first to data and evidence to better school performance, with the guiding criteria that each enhancement should be specific, replicable, and monitored to validate that it achieves its intended results. Two teachers at each grade level, plus an art teacher, music teacher, physical education teacher, health room tech, school secretary, school custodian, and three special education teachers are employed at Frederick Classical.

EDUCATION

Accelerated learners will be challenged by placement in accelerated class groupings as well as being given the ability to take courses in a different grade level for math and reading

Frederick Classical includes only the grammar and logic phases, but students who are showing readiness in certain subject areas for the rhetoric phase will be academically challenged accordingly. The school’s curriculum differs from what is currently available in other public and private schools in Frederick County. For instance, the reading curriculum, “Reading Street,” is researchbased, with a strong emphasis on phonics, as opposed to balanced literacy which emphasizes a whole language approach that neglects phonics and phonemic awareness. The mathematics curriculum we will employ is Singapore Math, which is world renowned and focuses on a smaller number of topics, teaching to mastery. History will be taught chronologically beginning in grade one, and is the organizing structure for science and the humanities. Students in grade one will learn about ancient times, moving in grade two to learning about the Middle Ages. In grade three the Renaissance Period will be studied, while grade four will emphasize modern times.

The art and music the students are exposed to will reflect that of the time period being studied in their history class,

Special education will also be available to students who require it, and is consistent with what is offered in the Frederick County Public Schools system. Accelerated learners will be challenged by placement in accelerated class groupings as well as being given the ability to take courses in a different grade level for math and reading. All of the subject areas being taught are aligned with the Maryland State Voluntary Curriculum, with students prepared to partake in all state testing. Science will also begin to be taught to first graders, and will correspond to the historical period the students are studying. Consequently, first graders will be studying biology, and second graders will study astronomy and earth science. Third graders study chemistry, with fourth graders learning physics. Grades five through eight will repeat this sequence, but in greater detail.

according to their grade. Foreign language is mandatory, with Spanish instruction beginning in kindergarten, and taught every year through grade eight. Latin will be mandatory for fourth-, fifth-, and sixth- graders starting in the school’s second year of operation.

FREDE

According to the founders of the school, a classical education includes three stages of education, known as the “trivium.” The first stage is the Grammar phase and encompasses grades kindergarten through four. During this phase students acquire a fundamental knowledge of all subject areas. The next stage is called the logic phase and includes grades five through eight. During this phase students use reasoning to more deeply understand previously learned topics, as well as acquiring more knowledge. The third stage is the rhetoric phase, which include grades nine through 12, the high school years, during which students marshal their acquired knowledge and reasoning to persuade others and express themselves.

Righttime Medical Care Brings Innovative Concussion Services to Frederick County Submitted by Righttime Medical Care Photos by Brandon Bentley

Dr. Robert G. Graw Jr., CEO of Righttime Medical Care, examines a young athlete for signs of concussion. Before being allowed to return to play, an injured player must be evaluated by a licensed healthcare provider trained in the evaluation and management of concussions.

Most of us have heard the expression, “If you fall off your bicycle, get right back on.” It’s meant to teach us the importance of not giving up when we’re down, but what if the rider hits his head when he falls off that bicycle? A bang, hit or jolt to the head, even with the protection of a safety helmet, can cause a traumatic brain injury, also known as a concussion. An untreated concussion can lead to further medical complications, so it’s important to seek immediate medical attention. An award-winning urgent medical care center, Righttime Medical Care, will be opening its doors in Frederick in October 44 FALL 2013

to patients of all ages. With hours from 7 a.m. to midnight, and open every day of the year, Righttime will provide medical resources to the community, treating everything from sore throats to broken arms. One of the important services the facility will bring is Headfirst Sports Injury and Concussion Care. Dr. Robert G. Graw Jr., CEO of Righttime, and his team of health professionals have been leaders in Maryland’s medical community providing urgent care, and now also offer resources and services to educate parents, educators, athletic trainers, athletes and the general public on the prevention, treatment, signs and dangers of concussions and traumatic brain injury.

health care “At Headfirst, we want to provide immediate, responsive and quality medical care with a community model that will aid in the evaluation, prevention, and treatment of traumatic brain injuries, by coordinating with other resources in the community.” HeadFirst administers the ImPACT baseline test free of charge to thousands of youth athletes and is pleased to expand services to Frederick County. This fall, as sports practice begins for football, soccer, field hockey and cheerleading, young athletes will be out on the fields honing their skills and trying to help their teams win. If they get hurt, their instinct will be to get right back up and play, not wanting to acknowledge that an injury has taken place. If it’s just a minor scrape to the knee or bruise on the arm, there’s no reason why they can’t keep playing. But if they have sustained a blow or jolt to the body or head, they may have, in the words of Dr. Graw, a “serious invisible injury.” “A law passed in May 2011 by the State of Maryland requires that athletes suspected of sustaining a concussion must be evaluated by a licensed healthcare provider trained in the evaluation and management of concussions before they are allowed to return to play,” Dr. Graw explains. “At Headfirst, we want to provide immediate, responsive and quality medical care with a community model that will aid in the evaluation, prevention, and treatment of traumatic brain injuries, by coordinating with other resources in the community. We work with primary care doctors and other specialists to make sure that athletes are given the time to rest mentally and physically if they need to, before resuming their regular school and sports schedules.”

continues to be owned and managed by physicians, and since 1997 has served patients of all ages, from newborns to seniors. Righttime operates 10 state-of-the art urgent care centers in Anne Arundel, Frederick, Howard and Montgomery counties. HeadFirst Sports Injury and Concussion Care offers concussion education, and complete evaluation and care management for patients who may have sustained a concussion, in addition to pre- and post-injury cognitive assessment testing for athletes, to help students and their families navigate the road to recovery and make a safe return to play following a sports-related concussion. For more information The website at www.myheadfirst.com provides extensive educational content, as well as information on follow-up testing for patients suspected of sustaining a concussion. Headfirst can also be contacted via Righttime’s website: www.myrighttime.com or by calling 1-888-808-6483.

Working with local college, high school and recreational teams, Headfirst will be at the forefront of providing concussion education, testing, evaluation and treatment this sports season. The new Righttime Medical Care Center in Frederick located at 201B Shorebird St., in Market Square, will accept most insurance plans. Appointments can be made anytime by calling 1-888-8086483 or going online to www.myrighttime.com. Laboratory and X-ray services facilitate fast and convenient healthcare. Righttime Medical Care was founded by physicians as Nighttime Pediatrics to provide working parents with care for their children in the evenings and on weekends. The company

Dr. Stanford J. Coleman, chief networking officer for Medical Affairs and Community Relations at Righttime Medical Care, evaluates a head trauma patient at a Headfirst Sports Injury and Concussion Center. The red-and-white strip is called an optokinetic strip, which tests for optokinetic nystagmus (OKN).

New programs, services offered for older residents

by Kathryn D. Schey, Frederick County Department of Aging

There’s no place like home; it’s familiar, it’s comfortable, and for many of us, it’s where we want to stay. For some people, as they get older, health issues, physical limitations and financial restraints may make it difficult to maintain a property, navigate multiple flights of steps or use existing appliances and fixtures. One might think that given this set of circumstance a move is mandatory. The good news is that with planning and adaptation, “Aging in Place” is a realistic goal. The Frederick County Department of Aging is hosting the event “Adapt to the Future,” from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Frederick Senior Center, 1440 Taney Ave., in Frederick. A variety of exhibitors will be on hand to demonstrate and discuss ways existing homes can be modified to accommodate the needs of older adults and people with disabilities for ease of use and safety. If you would like to explore the options and innovations to make Aging in Place a possibility for you or someone you love, save the date and plan to attend. If you would like additional information about this or other Department of Aging programs and services call 301-600-1605 or visit www.frederickcountymd.gov/aging.

The Frederick County Department of Aging, in partnership with Tranquility Assisted Living, Home Instead Senior Care, and the Alzheimer’s Association, is proud to announce a new initiative called the Memory Café. The Memory Café is being offered in response to requests for a safe and relaxed place where people with memory impairment or other cognitive and physical impairments may dine out with their caregivers, families, and friends as well as health and social professionals. The goal of the café is to create an environment that promotes socialization, friendship and support. There is no formal agenda, although resource information will be available each month. Share a ride or try the bus when shopping around town for the holidays By Margie Weaver, TransIT Services, Frederick County

Don’t forget that for those who want to go into Washington, D.C., to shop, the MARC train leaves Frederick from the Monocacy Station (behind Target) three times early each weekday morning and returns in the evenings for just $7 one way. For many people, the idea of preparing for the holidays creates feelings of stress and dread. Heading out to Downtown Frederick, the shopping centers, or the malls to do a little shopping or buy supplies for your holiday open house? How badly clogged will the roadways be? Will you be able to find a decent parking space? Worried about all of the rich, traditional foods and drinks you’ll be enjoying from Halloween through New Year’s and don’t have enough time to exercise? There’s a solution for these challenges that you may have never even considered before now: Public and shared transportation. Frederick has an award-winning bus system which serves the urbanized areas of Frederick six days a week. TransIT Connector and shuttle buses serve many of the places you’ll want to go to shop this Holiday season: Downtown Frederick (including Shab Row, Everedy Square, and the Square Corner and surrounding shops and restaurants), FSK Mall, the Golden Mile, both Wal-Mart locations, Westview Promenade, and even Clemson’s Corner. At many locations, the bus drops riders off directly at or very close to retail entrances; no searching for a parking space, no trying to force your way into the line of traffic exiting the shopping centers. The fare is only $1.25 one way (cash) and multiple trip tickets can be purchased for further savings. And should you need it, transferring between bus lines is free! Don’t forget that for those who want to go into Washington, D.C., to shop, the MARC train leaves Frederick from the Monocacy Station (behind Target) three times early each weekday morning and returns in the evenings for just $7 one way.

Don’t live on a bus route or care to drive to an area where the bus stops to catch a ride? Consider participating in “collaborative consumption.” More plainly said – share a ride! Are family members, friends, or neighbors also heading out to shop for gifts, groceries, or party supplies? Ask if you can join them, or offer to drive. Not only will this help to decrease the number of cars on the congested roads, but you’ll have company along the way. Ever find it interesting that you have hundreds or even thousands of Facebook friends, yet you are in your car alone most of the time? Decrease emissions and traffic congestion while you have real social interactions with someone you enjoy spending time with! Finally, consider the health benefits, both physical and mental, of sharing a ride. You’ll have to walk to the bus stop, or maybe to your neighbor’s house. People who rideshare or use public transportation tend to weigh less, have better stamina, and are happier in general. They benefit from increased social contacts and the knowledge that they are making the environment healthier. So this year, before you make your list and check it twice, consider how you might share a ride to your shopping destinations. Just think – with all the money you’ll save from not needing as much gas or car maintenance, you just might be able to buy more gifts for those you love! TransIT schedules and information about how to purchase fare tickets can be found online at www.frederickcountymd.gov/transit. There you can find a video tutorial explaining how to plan trips if you are new to this, and we are always glad to help by phone as well – call 301-600-2065 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

FSK Hotel Still Offers Hospitality To Those Who Pass Through Its Doors Submitted by the Historical Society of Frederick County We sometimes think that making Christmas bigger and brighter is a modern phenomenon, but some Christmas traditions in Frederick County were known for their splashy show starting many decades ago. One was the Francis Scott Key Hotel’s annual Christmas tree. The tree was set up in the hotel’s beautiful lobby — a reflection of the opulence of grand city hotels of the early 20th century — and was extravagantly decorated, new ornaments added each year. If New York had its Macy’s window, Frederick had its FSK Hotel Christmas tree. For half a century the Francis Scott Key Hotel was a gem in Downtown Frederick. In 1921 hundreds of investors from throughout the region took a gamble to capitalize on Frederick’s location and history for the site of a luxury hotel. The FSK Hotel formally opened on Jan. 8, 1923. It boasted 205 guest rooms and 150 baths, along with a coffee shop, barber shop, shoe shining parlor, billiard room, ballroom, main dining room, private dining rooms, grill room, mezzanine, ladies parlor, and its spacious lobby. The “thoroughly modern hotel” of the Roaring Twenties was a far cry from its downtown predecessors. In fact, the site of the FSK Hotel at the corner of West Patrick and Court streets had long been a place of hospitality along the National Road. As far back as the late 1700s a tavern was located there, followed by the Talbott Hotel then City Hotel. Though modest by FSK Hotel standards, local lore purports those earlier establishments offered respite to late 18th and 19th century notables such as George Washington, William Henry Harrison, Gen. George A. Custer, Woodrow Wilson, Mexican general Santa Anna, and Alexander Graham Bell. In its heyday, the FSK Hotel also hosted famous names of its era: Betty Davis, Debbie Reynolds, Aldo Ray, and Eleanor Roosevelt, among others.

Despite financial hiccups during the Great Depression and World War II (primarily due to gasoline rationing that made pleasure travel difficult), the FSK Hotel remained an important downtown business for the next several decades. The hotel tried to roll with the times and amenities were added, such as a heliport on the roof to accommodate plans to offer helicopter transportation to Baltimore and Washington, D.C. in 1964, and marketing ploys deployed, such as an exhibit of letters and items owned by Gen. Douglas MacArthur in 1966. Sold several times, the hotel endured the indignity of being offered at public sale in 1967. Though its subsequent owners tried to recapture the hotel’s past glory, by the mid-1970s unpaid bills were mounting and the hotel closed for good on July 7, 1975. That same year the property was purchased by Homewood and converted for senior living, the hotel’s furnishing sold at auction at the Frederick fairgrounds. In the early 2000s, following Homewood’s relocation, the property was thoughtfully restored and the building’s exterior brought back to its former glory. Inside, cafes, boutiques, and offices opened for business with condominiums occupying the upper floors. Once again it provides hospitality to those who pass through its doors. FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE

Artomatic@Frederick returns for second run By Tripp Laino

58 FALL 2013

arts & leisure

Artists covering many disciplines of visual and performing arts are displaying their work, as well as leading demonstrations of various art styles and leading dance lessons. For several weeks in September and October, Frederick’s already bustling arts scene gets a temporary boost, as two empty Church Street buildings become home to a throng of artists displaying their work. More than 350 artists again took over the former Frederick County Public Schools building, at 115 E. Church St., for the second Artomatic@Frederick. The five-week event, which runs through Oct. 5, has expanded to a second building this year, its nextdoor neighbor at 117 E. Church St., according to Pattee Brown, communications and marketing lead for Artomatic@ Frederick. Artists covering many disciplines of visual and performing arts are displaying their work, as well as leading demonstrations of various art styles and leading dance lessons. The expansion will allow organizers to have a liquor license, and serve beer and wine in the new building. “It’s really an incredible space,” Brown said. “To walk through the space and feel the energy – Here’s an empty building that’s kind of [run-down], and all these artists converge on it and it becomes this energetic building with the energy of art.”

there. The sound system is just unprecedented. We’ll have three or four original artist bands every Friday and Saturday... The difference is going to be astronomical.” Brown praised the army of volunteers who have contributed time and efforts to organize and promote the festival. “Everything’s better looking and more vibrant,” Brown said. “Everything is 100,000 times better and it was already great.” At least one artist is excited about the changes. Goodloe Byron of Frederick participated in Artomatic in 2011 with a staircase mural. For this year’s event, Byron created a large series of squid and other cephalopods that will guide visitors toward the stage for music. He said that Artomatic allows artists more freedom than in other exhibition spaces. For example, the mural he painted in 2011 is still on the wall, allowing him to expand it and add other paintings this year. “It’s really going to blow people away I think,” Byron said. “It’s temporary, but that’s been the exact same way for the last two years. It’s one of the few places you exhibit that you’re allowed to manipulate the space in that way. You can literally do whatever you want.”

Brown said the event shows the importance of art and having a community that supports art. “People know art is important, but there’s something about transforming an abandoned building and the importance of art in the community,” she said. One of the biggest changes from the 2011 incarnation of Artomatic is a new team in charge of bringing in bands, and a revamped sound system that will be significantly more powerful than before. “The music is going to just be unprecedented for this town,” Brown said. “It’s a huge, old auditorium, and we built a stage up

BURKITTSVILLE Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Burkittsville is a well preserved, virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Churches, houses, and trade establishments along Main Street were bordered at the rear by fields surrounding the town. The mountains rose to the west. To this day, the town retains those early visual characteristics. Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam. The town’s inhabitants fled for safety to nearby villages. Today, many of Burkittsville’s residents commute to jobs in the nearby metropolitan areas, but the town maintains a strong sense of community through its many services, social activities, special events, and town meetings.

TOWN OFFICES & SERVICES

Middletown Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Middletown is a small, rural community steeped in American history. It is located in the beautiful Middletown Valley that stretches between the Catoctin Mountains on the east and South Mountain on the west. A young Lieutenant George Washington, while surveying the South Mountain area, reported that the valley to the east was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Middletown continues to evolve from a settlement of farmers and ranchers to one of tradesmen, craftsmen, businessmen, clergymen, commuters, and retired folk—without losing its agricultural roots. From the stately old Victorian-style homes and soaring church steeples to the rustic dairy farms and modern housing developments, residents find in Middletown a refuge where they can enjoy small-town life as it used to be. Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Myersville is strategically located halfway between Frederick and Hagerstown, with convenient access from Interstate 70 to the south and US Route 40 to the north, yet nicely buffered from both by a mile of local road. The outstanding location and beautiful, hilly terrain combined to make the town an attractive location for residential development during the last decades of the 20th century. Today, Myersville takes care to ensure by ordinance and zoning control that its attractive location is matched by attractive development. The Canada Hill development and three other developments built in the 1990s—Ashley Hills, Meadowridge, and Terraces of South Mountain—exemplify the same standards of appearance set by the town. Walkersville Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Walkersville is a combination of two villages that were settled by German immigrants in the mid 1700s and early 1800s. By the late 1800s, the villages of Georgetown and Walkersville had grown so intertwined that it made sense to combine them into one entity, which was named Walkersville. Today, Walkersville aggressively pursues fiscal responsibility, recycling projects, and innovation. In 1995, it was credited with having the first State Police bicycle patrol in the nation. There are four schools, residential developments, a shopping center, several businesses and institutions, and numerous restaurants in the town. Walkersville has managed a rapid population growth wisely, enabling it to maintain a friendly, small-town atmosphere. Burgess

Woodsboro Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. After the Civil War, the town developed some notoriety as a train stop that offered exceptional accommodations and relaxing pursuits. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town. There are small commercial activities and service providers within the town itself. Burgess
