Frederick Reads Brings Together Diverse Community Submitted by Frederick County Public Libraries

What would happen if a community decided to celebrate a particular theme every year, a theme so expansive that everyone could relate to it in a way that personally resonates? And what if a diverse group of individuals and organizations created the framework for anyone to celebrate the theme through programs, events, book discussions and more, connecting several thousand people to each other through a shared experience? Frederick County is accomplishing these goals and more through Frederick Reads. Since its inception nine years ago, Frederick Reads has evolved from a single author event into a seasonal event series each spring intended to foster a love of reading. The celebration is an opportunity to share an imaginative journey together through the pages of significant books. Diverse picks include fiction, non-fiction, poetry and music, covering topics related to history, societal issues, culture, sports and much more. As Frederick Reads delves into themes within 10 SPRING 2014

the books themselves, cultural partners often expand upon these themes through a variety of venues. While wide-ranging, all Frederick Reads selections share a common purpose, which is to provide a platform for broad exploration of multi-faceted issues that spark productive conversations in Frederick and beyond. Frederick Reads invites world-class authors to Frederick to discuss their work with audiences. Past Frederick Reads guest authors include Elizabeth Gilbert, Cokie Roberts, Frank Deford, James L. Swanson, Rebecca Skloot, David Sedaris, Alexander McCall Smith, Billy Collins, Diane Ackerman, Nikki Giovanni, and many others. Most author events are free to the public, underwritten by our partners as a gift to the community. The 2014 Frederick Reads celebration includes visits by Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter/author Rosanne Cash to discuss â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Music of Language.â&#x20AC;? Poet Laureate of the United States, Natasha Trethewey, launched the 2014 season, speaking on the same theme.

in the community In addition to the high-profile signature events, Frederick Reads invites the community to produce dozens of programs that touch on the theme and at the same time generate passion within their audiences. Frederick Reads builds connections among disparate audiences who wish to participate under the Frederick Reads umbrella, often connecting authors and artists with venues who have an audience looking for programming. Events take place at a variety of venues including the historic Weinberg Center for the Arts, Frederick Community College, art galleries, libraries and even in the homes of literature lovers. These community-driven, ancillary programs are what make Frederick Reads unique. The program has been nationally and internationally lauded as a model of cultural community building, and a way to encourage not only reading, but also building bridges and sharing constructive, diverse viewpoints through a shared experience. Authors have expressed delight at the creative programs that spark their own imagination in ways they didn’t expect.

Participants receive a bell souvenir and will be eligible for other prizes. Passports can be picked up at the Frederick Visitor Center, 151 S. East Street in Frederick.

The event was revived in 2006, after not happening for about a decade, she said. The museum in Frederick typically runs from Bell and History Days in April through Museums by Candlelight, held in December, she said.

The biggest bell of the day is the one located at the Frederick Visitor Center, Shatto said. It was created in 2006 to celebrate the revival of the event.

“This is our way to say, ‘we’re open, spring is here, come out, we’ve got a season of discovery for you all,’” she said.

“We wanted to do it in a big way,” she said. “We were able to bring the world’s only traveling bell forge and we actually cast a bell.”

Shatto said the original incarnation of the event ran from the 1960s through the 1990s before fading out. When the event was revived, the focus was changed to include museums throughout the county, instead of those just in the City of Frederick. At the Brunswick Heritage Museum, curator Rebecca O’Leary says the event brings a major influx of visitors to the museum, which has a large train display and recreations of Victorian rooms as permanent exhibits.

Visitors can even line up and ring the big bell themselves, she said.

A number of Frederick Countians have bounded from local celebrity to national figures. National anthem author Francis Scott Key, Civil War flag-waver Barbara Fritchie, “President in Congress Assembled” John Hanson, U.S. Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney, and international fashion designer Claire McCardell immediately come to mind. But there was another who may have been even more widely known and celebrated during his lifetime, and whose exploits are reduced to little more than local trivia today. Winfield Scott Schley was born at his family’s home at “Richfield,” near Frederick in 1839. An earlier home on the original 1,000-acre property had been the home of Gov.

Thomas Johnson. Schley was named for Mexican War hero and family friend Gen. Winfield Scott. Winfield Scott Schley himself followed in the booted footsteps of his namesake, graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1860 and serving on various vessels during the U.S. Civil War. Schley later participated in an expedition on the Korean Peninsula (1871), commanded the rescue of Adolphus Greely’s Arctic Expedition (1884), and served in various other capacities to the end of the 19th century. Schley likely would have remained a nautical footnote if not for a war. The Spanish-American War was a 10-month affair known mostly today for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders factually challenged charge up San Juan Hill and the slogan “Remember

HISTORY the Maine!” even if few remember what it was they are supposed to remember about it. The war had resulted from U.S. intervention in the Cuban and Philippine wars of independence from Spain to further its own economic and political interests.

conflict resulted in the disintegration of the Spanish Empire and the entrance of the U.S. on the world stage as a true world power.

Assigned to command the “Flying Squadron” in early 1898, Commodore Schley Admiral Winfield Scott Schley. was the lowest of his rank Historical Society of Frederick serving under Acting County collection. Rear Admiral William Sampson and steaming to the Caribbean. His controversial actions there began with the blockading of Santiago Harbor, Cuba, and ended with the destruction of the Spanish fleet in the Atlantic. The

After a 47-year career in the Navy, Winfield Scott Schley retired a real admiral and returned to his hometown a hero, signing memorabilia and making personal appearances. He died at age 71 in 1911. In the space of just several decades, the Spanish American War fell from public consciousness as larger, more desperate conflicts took center stage. Today, the short, seemingly inconsequential war is far overshadowed by the wars fought since. Now, when we remember the Maine, let’s also remember Winfield Scott Schley, our hometown Hero of Santiago.

Schley skyrocketed to fame as the “Hero of Santiago,” the U.S. victory and his praises being celebrated in song, poetry, and pageants all over the nation. Of course, in any battle there are winners and losers, and in the arena of public adulation Schley bested his superiors decisively. Even though a formal court of inquiry criticized Schley’s actions in a decision approved all the way up to President Theodore Roosevelt, the national press and the public continued to build his reputation.

Frederick’s Millennials Choose Mixed-Used Communities by Cassandra Bailey, RE/MAX Achievers The term “Millennial” is generally used to describe a person who reached young adulthood around the year 2000. Characteristics that identify this generation are very different from any before them. For starters, they have been plugged into technology since birth. It’s widely believed that they have the most educated mothers of generations before them and, because of this, they are the most “scheduled” generation ever, leading them to be successful multi-taskers. They expect to have six to eight careers in their lifetime and are attracted to diverse environments. So what does this have to do with real estate development in Frederick County, Maryland? Well, according “The Wall Street Journal,” a survey of about 1,200 Millennials “shows that ... 62 percent said they prefer mixed-use developments with shops, restaurants, and offices, and 52 percent say they like pedestrianfriendly neighborhoods.” Furthermore, “Millennials represent a big change from other generations, in that this group will continue to prefer more compact, urban homes, even later in life... that will likely lead to more mixed-use development.” This leads us to the definition of mixed-use development. A “mixed-use development is any urban, suburban or village development, or even a single building, that blends a combination of residential, commercial, cultural, institutional, or industrial

uses, where those functions are physically and functionally integrated, and that provides pedestrian connections,” according to Grant Ian Thrall’s 2012 book “Business Geography and New Real Estate Market Analysis.” Let’s look at how this new generation’s ideals are already beginning to affect Frederick’s growth and development. The past few years have seen a major change in our urban areas. It used to be that the historic downtown areas of Frederick, New Market, Middletown, and Thurmont, to name a few, were the only places where you could go park the car and walk to a variety of shops, restaurants, and parks. Now, we have two new areas that are completely mixed-use development: the Villages of Urbana and Market Square. We also have the proposed Monrovia Town Center still in early approval stages that may come to fruition in the near future. The Villages of Urbana offers a wide range of family-oriented destinations, including restaurants coffee shops, recreational parks, grocery stores, medical facilities, and a public library. This year the Villages celebrates its 15th anniversary and to celebrate, the “Fabulous Fifteen Events” have been planned for residents, including a Beer & Bingo Night, Spring Yard Sale, Wine Tasting & Social evening, and Family Game Night.

housing & real estate To keep everyone in the community connected, the Villages puts out a weekly newsletter, which is available online. At any given time, you can see young couples, families with young children, and a variety of other people strolling along the sidewalks in the Villages. As with the Villages of Urbana, Market Square, off Md. Route 26 between Frederick and Walkersville, is a rapidly growing community. It was awarded by the Frederick County Building Association, the “2012 Award of Excellence” for Best Planned Urban Mixed-Use Community. Although still expanding, Market Square boasts an impressive collection of restaurants, shops, and activities. From fast-casual restaurants such as Noodles and Company or Moe’s Southwest Grill, to sit-down dining establishments such as Madrones, the food choices are numerous and easy to access on foot. Stores such as Pier 1 Imports, HomeGoods, and PetsMart are just a few of the new places for residents to drop in. Leisure activities such as exercising at Sport&Health, or a relaxing massage at Massage Envy help people unwind after a busy day at work.

Of course, one of the main attractions is the Wegman’s grocery store, which has its own food court as well as a well-stocked grocery market. To pull in those Millennials in the Frederick area, the Market Square’s website’s first line is, “Living in this brand-new, mixed-use community presents young professionals and families alike the opportunity to enjoy all that Frederick has to offer.” The addition of the potential Monrovia Town Center will bring a similar structure to another part of Frederick County. A few traits of mixed-use developments that are highly desirable are: the reduced distances between housing, workplaces, and retail destinations; a strong neighborhood bond or character; pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly environments; life-cycle housing (starter homes to larger homes to senior housing); and more compact land development. The benefits to the economy and environment for the greater Frederick area earn mixed-use developments a plus for many.

A quirky and unique shop, Relish stocks vintage goodies alongside modern dinnerware, décor, glassware, linens, cookbooks and candles. Hallie Burrier said she always wanted the business to be creative and fun and to inspire her customers, as she has been inspired by shops around the world. “There have been stores across the world that have left a lasting impression on me as a customer because they were able to create a welcoming and visually exciting environment,” she said. “I love being in shops that are curated, unique, and have a sense of discovery about them.” How would you describe your business to someone who knows nothing about it? What goals do you have in mind with regard to how you want to serve your customers?

Frederick’s location makes it a destination for those in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Virginia. What is your background, education, training?

HB: My father was a department store manager and my grandfather owned a hardware store on a Main Street, so retail is in my blood. I’m a former creative district merchandising manager for Urban Outfitters in Manhattan, Bloomingdales in Tysons Corner, and creative director for Britches of Georgetown. I went to school for fashion design, but found that I loved arranging stores and building displays more.

What lessons have you learned in creating this business?

HB: The biggest lesson we’ve learned so far is to trust our instincts. We only carry products that we love, believe in, and would use in our home, and we don’t stray from that. If you treat customers with care and respect, you can create a positive environment where you look forward to opening the doors each day. What is it about the Frederick County region that supports your particular vision?

HB: Our store nestles perfectly in the historic downtown setting. We are excited to be a part of a town with such rich history and kind residents. Mark grew up in Myersville, but I have moved several places along the East Coast, most recently New York City. We moved here as a great place to live, first and foremost, and to be close to our families. It has the same characteristics I loved about New York City. We can walk to shops, restaurants, and have plenty of entertainment in our neighborhood. We have the balance of family and space to host and enjoy our home as well.

I feel very fortunate to have found my career passion very early on in my working life. It has taught me so much about not only the creative and visual aspect of retail, but also about people and customer service. I have wanted to have my own shop since I was 15. Every career move I made was to learn more and work towards that goal. Eighteen years later it became a reality and I am grateful every day to Mark for supporting this dream and being such a huge part of it, and to our customers that make living that dream possible. Mark’s background is in graphic design and illustration so we’re both creative and visual people. His talents turn our ideas into reality. We love having the freedom to create in our environment with no restrictions and to share our vision with our customers.

Test-Taking Strategies Help Students Do Their Best By Dr. Terry Alban, Superintendent, Frederick County Public Schools

Spring is exam time across Frederick County. Adults know that tests don’t give a complete picture of a student’s knowledge, ability or aptitude, yet some children worry excessively about how they’ll perform. Help prepare children for success by educating yourself about the types of tests students are taking. Tests at FCPS

FCPS uses the Global Scholar Assessment System’s Performance and Achievement Series to gauge how well students respond to curriculum. The Performance Series uses computerized tests to pinpoint proficiency levels corresponding with specific 30 SPRING 2014

standards. The Achievement Series allows teachers to develop and administer online and paper-pencil assessments. Each series captures immediate results and produces standards-based reports to help guide next steps.

EDUCATION FCPS high school students take final exams in most courses. Finals can consist of components administered throughout the course, at the end of the course or a combination. FCPSmandated CRES tests make up the final exams for many courses and are 20 percent of students’ final course grades. The Maryland School Assessment (MSA) meets federal No Child Left Behind requirements. Students in grades 3-8 take MSAs in reading and math, and in grades 5 and 8 they take the science MSA. [Grade 10 MSA requirements are met by the High School Assessments (HSA) exams in algebra, biology and English 10.] The format includes multiple-choice and student-constructed responses. Parents receive individual, school and state results. The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) is a partnership of about 25 states developing a national testing program slated to replace the MSA for the 201415 school year. FCPS is field testing PARCC tests this year. The Criterion-Referenced Evaluation System (CRES) is an FCPS testing program to determine how students are mastering essential curriculum. Multiple-choice, essay and short-answer results help us evaluate and improve student and school progress. FCPS high school students take final exams in most courses. Finals can consist of components administered throughout the course, at the end of the course or a combination. FCPSmandated CRES tests make up the final exams for many courses and are 20 percent of students’ final course grades.

Advanced Placement (AP) tests are national College Board exams that FCPS strongly encourages students enrolled in AP classes to take. Many Frederick County students earn scores that qualify for college credit. The SAT is a national college-entrance exam to measure critical reading, writing and math skills. The Preliminary SAT (PSAT) determines scholarship eligibility and is a practice exam for the SAT. FCPS provides the PSAT free to all 10th graders to assess their progress and prepare them for taking it again in 11th grade when good results can qualify students for scholarships. The American College Test (ACT) is a national exam some colleges require. In addition to understanding types and purposes of tests, families can set their children on the path to good grades by assuring they have: • a regular time and place for homework • regular exercise • a good night’s rest • meals that are nourishing, but not too heavy. If children are anxious about test performance: • reassure them that some concern is normal and can help them do well • encourage a positive attitude that helps them decide to do their best and not blame themselves for what they don’t yet know • teach them to take a few slow, deep breaths to relax • remind them that paying close attention to one question at a time will help them overcome anxiety, as their power of concentration kicks in.

With warmer weather and longer days, Spring invites us to open our windows, let in fresh air, and do some spring cleaning. It is a time of new possibilities and planting seeds that you hope will grow and flourish in the months to come. While you tend to your home and garden, Spring can also be a time where you tend to your soul. It can be a time of planting the kinds of seeds you want to see flourish in your life. And it can be a time of looking at how you may have closed the doors of your heart… and then choose to open up and let love in.

Here are three ways to plant soul seeds and “let love in” this Spring:

• Know what soul seeds you want to plant. Just as a gardener carefully identifies what she wants to plant, when it comes to tending to your soul, ask yourself, “What seeds do I want to plant in my life?” Maybe it’s patience, kindness, adventure

The same goes for the seeds we want to see blossom in our souls. or feeling close to a dear one again. Know what soul seeds you want to plant so that you can focus on tending to the right ones in your everyday life. • Label the seed. Our family has a just a small garden in the backyard, but still we can forget what we planted. My husband labels each plant now. It may seem obvious, but when we don’t see any sign of life, we can forget that there is anything in the garden but dirt! The same goes for the seeds we want to see blossom in our souls. Write down your soul seeds and post the words in places where you’ll see them throughout your day. I posted my soul seed “tenderness” on my nightstand so I look it every morning and every evening, and in our kitchen where we spend much of our time. Every time I look at my seed, it reminds me to be mindful of what I am tending to.

As you clean out your closets, open the windows, and feel the warmth in the air with promises of summer to come, tend to the seeds of your soul. Know what soul seeds you want to plant. As people on the move, we are constantly faced with distractions. Coping with many work and home distractions is as easy as taking a few deep breaths or stepping away from the desk. Maintaining a distraction-free environment, however, is becoming increasingly difficult behind the wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that drivers are distracted by secondary activities 30 percent of the time while driving. And, according to a study released by the NHTSA and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI), 80 percent of crashes and 65 percent of nearcrashes involve some form of driver distraction that reduces driving safety.

These distractions can take many forms, including cognitive, auditory, visual and biomechanical. Changing the radio station or eating breakfast during your commute isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the only thing that affects your ability to drive. Quality of sleep, emotional state of mind, weather, and numerous other factors contribute to a distraction-ridden commute.

Ridesharing is a popular option for those that have a longer commute. An easy way to ensure the safety of yourself and your passengers is by using public transportation. Many options are more efficient and less expensive than driving alone and are available even in more rural locations in Frederick County. Ridesharing, bicycling, buses, trains, and shuttles are all accessible in our city. Ridesharing is a popular option for those that have a longer commute. This option includes carpooling or vanpooling with friends, neighbors, or fellow employees and is available through a simple online set-up at www.commuterconnections.org. You will be entered in a database that includes hundreds of other commuters looking for a ride. Carpooling and vanpooling have several benefits that include: access to the HOV lane, cheaper fuel costs, various pick-up and drop-off locations and tax incentives. Bicycling is another great commute option if you live in close proximity to your work. Many employers have bike racks and incentive programs for employees. The City of Frederick has been designated a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bicycle Friendly Communityâ&#x20AC;? with

dedicated bike lanes in various locations. You may participate in Bike To Work Day (a regional event) set for Friday, May 16. Events are planned from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m., at the downtown Transit Center on East Street. Learn more about bicycling and commuter options by stopping by at this event. Bicyclists may secure their bikes on the bus bike racks and ride local TransIT free on this day. Buses, trains, shuttles, and other forms of alternative transportation are available on a daily basis throughout Frederick County and the State of Maryland. Use local TransIT Connector buses and shuttles to get access to most major shopping locations and businesses in the area well as connection to two Frederick MARC stations and the Point of Rocks MARC Station. Using public transportation provides a safe, inexpensive, and reliable method of transportation to and from work, school, and many extracurricular activities throughout the City of Frederick. 15 Sq Arts Project aims to boost arts education Words by Tripp Laino When the Frederick Arts Council moved out of the 15 East Patrick Street space it had occupied for 14 years, there was some concern about a potential hole in Frederick’s arts community But thanks to a grant from the Ausherman Family Foundation and other funding, the space is being remodeled, and will reopen with a focus on arts education as the 15sq Arts Project, according to Carrie Delente, chair of the project. The building, known as the McCrory’s building to many longtime Frederick residents, has been an arts space since 1998, and was a storefront before that. With an L shape, the building

actually has two entrances, one on Patrick Street and one on Market Street. Delente said the group recently held an open house to show the changes made to the space, and also hosted a presentation from a performing arts consultant the group had hired. The focus on arts education stems from research done by the consultant, she said, but the building will have other focuses as well. “[Arts education was] the No. 1 priority that everyone in Frederick — the artists at large — felt we needed,” she said. “We

“There’s a big focus around film,” she said. “This is where they saw holes — around film, sound recording studios, music… It’s focusing on that a little more than the other performing arts.” didn’t want this decision to say, ‘we’re going to have this and that’s what it’s going to be.’ We want to make sure we’re part of this community.” In addition to hosting education and classes, another major focus is on technology related to the arts, which Delente said is underserved in the community. “There’s a big focus around film,” she said. “This is where they saw holes — around film, sound recording studios, music… It’s focusing on that a little more than the other performing arts.” Though there are other places in Frederick that focus on arts education, such as the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center, but Delente said the two organizations focus on the arts in different ways so there won’t be overlap. “We’re not competing,” she said. Construction is currently on hold, as the group is waiting for a second report from consultants on how to design and plan the space. Though there will be less focus on renting out theater space, as there was with the previous owners, Delente said there will be stages, recital spaces, and other type of uses that will be available for rent. Because of the wait for the construction and the exact plan for the space, the timetable for opening has not been set. She said the group hoped to open by the end of 2014, or in early 2015. In addition to the obvious boost to the arts in the city, a vibrant arts scene also contributes economically, said Richard Griffin, the city’s director of economic development. A 2007 study by the city found that arts activities brought in more than $10 million in direct spending, such as tickets, and indirect spending, such as meals and shopping.

“Adding 15 Square Arts to an already robust downtown arts scene is huge in that it will help attract a larger market share of entertainment and arts education events and programs to Frederick,” Griffin said in an email. “The potential synergy of this project with the Weinberg Center for the Arts and Maryland Ensemble Theatre (MET) in the Downtown Theater District is enormous, and we strongly support the efforts.” The 15 Sq Arts Project is currently looking for volunteers for several of its boards, and to serve other functions as well. As visitors journey through the hills of northern Frederick County to what Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first native-born United States citizen to be declared a saint, called her Valley of Blessings, they will find an awe-inspiring basilica filled with seven types of Italian marble, German mosaics, and more than 200 German stained glass windows.

In 1809, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton traveled from Baltimore to Emmitsburg to start the first free school for Catholic girls in the United States. As foundress of the religious order the Sisters of Charity of St. Josephs she lived, labored, and died in Emmitsburg. At the Shrine, visitors can tour the two historic homes where she lived and the Basilica where she is entombed.

Many of the windows depict saints who are significant to the Daughters of Charity, who trace their roots in the United States to Mother Seton. The saints featured include St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Patrick, St. Catherine Laboure, St. Rose of Lima, and St. Louise de Marillac, who cofounded the Daughters of Charity in France in 1633 with St. Vincent de Paul. In 1968, five years after her Beatification by Pope John Paul XXIII, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton found her final resting place at the chapel. In 1991, Pope John Paul II declared the chapel a Basilica, and it was formally named The Basilica of The National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. “When the Basilica was being built in the 1960s, parts of Europe were still recovering from World War II, which spurred the production of stained glass windows since many of the churches were being rebuilt,” said Sister Anne Marie Lamoureux, a Daughter of Charity and tour guide at the Shrine. The stained glass windows are located throughout the Basilica and can even be found in the confessionals and in the choir loft, which features windows with saints related to music including Pope Gregory I, who created the Gregorian chant, and Pope Pius X, who encouraged music during Mass.

The light streams through the windows at different times throughout the course of the day providing beautiful rays of color in the Basilica. There are times when the entire Basilica is aglow with beautiful light, an inspiring sight to behold. The Basilica at The National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. year round. Tours of the Basilica, grounds, and museum celebrating Mother Seton’s life are available Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and special events, concerts, and festivals are held throughout the year.

BURKITTSVILLE Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Burkittsville is a well preserved, virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Churches, houses, and trade establishments along Main Street were bordered at the rear by fields surrounding the town. The mountains rose to the west. To this day, the town retains those early visual characteristics. Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam. The town’s inhabitants fled for safety to nearby villages. Today, many of Burkittsville’s residents commute to jobs in the nearby metropolitan areas, but the town maintains a strong sense of community through its many services, social activities, special events, and town meetings.

Thurmont Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Thurmont is a small city in northern Frederick County established in 1751. It is known as the “Gateway to the Catoctin Mountains” where Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park are located. There are three covered bridges nearby: Loy’s Station Bridge, Roddy Road Bridge, and Utica Mills Bridge. Catoctin Iron Furnace and forge, built during the Revolutionary War, is just down the road. Frederick is about 15 miles south and Gettysburg is 20 miles north. Baltimore and Washington, DC are each about 60 miles away. The President’s retreat, Camp David, is also nearby. Thurmont is proud to have been designated a “Main Street Maryland Community.”

Walkersville Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Walkersville is a combination of two villages that were settled by German immigrants in the mid 1700s and early 1800s. By the late 1800s, the villages of Georgetown and Walkersville had grown so intertwined that it made sense to combine them into one entity, which was named Walkersville. Today, Walkersville aggressively pursues fiscal responsibility, recycling projects, and innovation. In 1995, it was credited with having the first State Police bicycle patrol in the nation. There are four schools, residential developments, a shopping center, several businesses and institutions, and numerous restaurants in the town. Woodsboro Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. After the Civil War, the town developed some notoriety as a train stop that offered exceptional accommodations and relaxing pursuits. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town.
