AND SO IT IS SAID…
Barb Campbell, Studio Eleven Photography
I don't know about you, but I feel like the so called lazy, hazy days of summer rushed by in the blink of an eye (What? The leaves are changing already?). Fall colors are starting to replace the bright yellow blossoms of the Black-Eyed Susan, and cool, crisp air is ushering out the hot, humid temperatures that had us all longing to dive into the nearest watering hole. Living and/or working in Frederick County gives all of us an opportunity to experience what I'll call an informal and unofficial four-season resort...no one person owns it, and we all have the opportunity to enjoy it. Whether it be the view of the Catoctin Mountains while traveling Route 15, the aromas that waft through downtown as the multitude of restaurants prep for the hungry masses, or a simple splash from the Monocacy or a downtown fountain; it's all good. So even though summer is over and I never did go on that picnic in the park, or unpack my white pants for the season, I find comfort in knowing that it's okay. Autumn is a splendid time for a picnic and I'm told that the “no white after Labor Day” rule no longer applies.

Apparel designer AJ Naylor, along with friends and business partners Chaz Stipely and Sam Delgado, are embracing their deep Frederick roots through the fashion brand, Fred & Co. 1745. History buffs will recognize the brand's namesake as Frederick, established in 1745; an area built on industry and profoundly proud of its rich Civil war history. Equally proud of their hometown, Naylor, Stipely and Delgado are committed to producing products that not only celebrate Frederick's history, but also give back and help the local economy. The city’s roots in the garmetn/textile industry run deep, and the trio admits that they are energized by joining in the garment/textile industry, their entrepreneurial spirit has been energized by joining the ranks of such fashion luminaries as Claire McCardell. Born and raised in Frederick, McCardell was world-renowned for her brand under the American manufacturer Townley Frocks. With a philosophy of quality versus quantity and a strong desire to pay homage to Frederick's industrial and military history, Fred & Co. 1745 designs caps, bags, shirts and accessories that are based on classic American style. Each piece is cut and sewn by expert craftsmen here in the U.S. Everything that Fred & Co. 1745 makes is a limited edition piece meant to be timeless and last a lifetime. In their own words:"Living in a disposable world, Fred & Co 1745 provides tough, quality garments. Our handcrafted, American-made goods are representative of the city we were raised in: rooted in rebellion, progression, and history. From us to you, Fred & Co 1745."

CONNECTIONS for those who need it most

If one could summarize all of what the Arc of Frederick County does for people with developmental disabilities into just one word, the best choice would likely be “connections.” It is a fact of life that being connected with the correct people and resources today is a significant contributing factor to success. A knowledgeable and supportive network of people and organizations can help a person to connect the proverbial dots in their life and career. Establishing such a network is even more vital for people with developmental disabilities. That is where The Arc of Frederick County, with its personalized focus on the individual comes into the picture. Since its founding in 1958, when it was known as the Association for Retarded Children of Frederick County, this nonprofit organization has dedicated itself to enhancing the lives of developmentally challenged residents. The Arc helps folks form lifelong networks which may have otherwise been impossible or at least quite difficult to form. There are so many different ways that the Arc assists its several hundred local clients each year. This article can only mention the organization’s services in the broadest of terms; however, anyone is encouraged to contact The Arc directly for more detailed information about options that may be available for a particular situation. Much of the time The Arc provides individuals with developmental disabilities with such services as: • residential support for families that need assistance within their own home • employment support to help locate jobs that match the abilities and passions of developmentally disabled adults • future estate planning for parents of clients access to classes at Frederick Community College, the Delaplaine Arts Center & other local institutions • Hispanic outreach programs • autism waiver support

The Arc recognizes that the families of people with developmental disabilities are also in need of special considerations. To that end, support groups and other programs are available for siblings and parents of developmentally disabled individuals. Periodic respite care options are also offered. Providing such services and education to the Frederick County community cannot take pace within a vacuum. The Arc seeks connection with the public at large in multiple ways, all in an effort to incorporate its clients into the community, and bring that community into a better understanding of developmentally disabled residents. For example, there is a library of relevant information available to the public for the purposes of training and education on a number of topics. The Arc also has a speakers’ bureau to provide interested parties with presenters to better explain the organization’s mission and the nature of their clients, upon request. Social media is also an integral component of The Arc’s outreach operation. With an active presence on Twitter and Facebook, as well as a blog updated regularly by current and former clients, The Arc offers multiple online possibilities to keep up with client testimonials and upcoming happenings. (Such as the grand opening of a new Market Street facility in late 2015.) Those who become members of The Arc through financial contributions also receive the organization’s newsletter, “The Link.” The mission and reach of The Arc throughout Frederick County is augmented each year by volunteers from all walks of life. People with particular knowledge of fields and hobbies such as photography, art and computers sciences, to name just a few, are encouraged to offer their time to share what they know with The Arc’s clients. Drivers and daytime activity companions are also in demand. Connections serve as both the heart and the backbone of the Arc’s ongoing efforts to serve the Frederick community. Via these connections, the Arc has been “providing enviable lives for people with developmental disabilities” for decades and will continue to do so. arfc.org www.facebook.com/ArcFrederick http://thearcoffrederickcounty.blogspot.com

The latest addition to the Frederick Pizza scene is the international chain, Flippin' Pizza. Although they have locations from here to Dubai, the cozy Market Street shop still manages to maintain a local feel. With daily specials, calzones, hand tossed pizzas such as the Triboro (a meat lovers dream) and The Oh Baby salad, a blend of mixed baby greens with homemade candied walnuts, juicy mandarin orange slices, and aged gorgonzola cheese crumbles, tossed in their signature balsamic vinaigrette, it's no surprise that Flippin' Pizza is already a big hit with Frederick pizza fans. I was introduced to the game of billiards at the age of 11, back in 1977. That Christmas morning my siblings and I were presented with a beautiful new, red, felt-top pool table by our dad. My two older brothers and father were competitive players, and I quickly learned that if I wanted extra attention from my dad, I better learn how to play. And with my father’s instruction, I did become good at it. In my 30s, playing pool became a regular weekend activity for me. Looking back, I feel bad for the poor souls who I “tested” on dates by challenging them to a game of billiards. If the guy wasn’t skilled, he never got another date. It must’ve been that “marry someone just like my father” type of thing. (Needless to say, I married a guy who plays pool very well.)
Recently, I decided it was time that my 10-year-old son learned the game, so I sought out places to play in the Frederick area. Once I warmed up the old cue stick, I quickly remembered how much I love the game of pool. Just like riding a bike, you never lose the skill. I’m excited to provide my little pool-shark-in-training the very same love of the game that I gained from my dad. I found three great places to play billiards in Frederick; all are family friendly through the dinner hour, with a more adult-only crowd after 9 p.m.

A MUSICAL TRIBUTE
TO OUR VETERANS 52 FALL 2015
HEAR iT!
Founded in 1997, Frederick Symphony Orchestra (FSO) is a community orchestra for both professional and amateur musicians in Maryland. The orchestra performs a wide variety of music; classical masterworks, music by contemporary composers and even pop concerts. They also host education programs such as the Young Artist Competition for young aspiring musicians. WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

HEAR iT! On Nov. 7, you can enjoy a special performance by two of the chamber groups from the Frederick Symphony Orchestra as they play the “Music of America.” Their musical tribute to those who have served our country will feature a program of American composers including some patriotic numbers such as “Liberty Bell March” by John Phillip Sousa. Other music selections will include “Bethena” by Scott Joplin and “Three Preludes” by George Gershwin. As well as selections from Truman Harris, a living American composer, as well as principal bassoonist of the National Symphony Orchestra. His “Character Sketches” is a clever composition containing six movements, including “Buskers,” “Monday Morning,” “Wallflower” and “Lydian Invaders.” The concert will be preformed at the Historical Society of Frederick County. Dedicated to local history, research and education, the Historical Society is a dynamic nonprofit organization that recognizes Frederick County, Maryland’s significant historical impact on our state, nation, and world. Their aim is to engage and provide interactive experiences that are relevant, accessible, and meaningful to all people. Incorporated in 1911, the Historical Society of Frederick County operates the Museum of Frederick County History, the Roger Brooke Taney House, and the Frederick County Archives and Research Center. “We are thrilled to have the Frederick Symphony Orchestra perform at the Historical Society of Frederick County. The FSO and the Historical Society share similar missions to educate and inspire the people of this community, and this event does just that. It brings two organizations together to engage and enrich the public with the beauty of music and the history of our country." "It is the perfect way to honor those who have served our nation for Veteran’s Day,” said Mary Boswell, executive director of the Historical Society of Frederick County. The evening will be capped off by a lovely selection of wine and refreshments, generously provided by Wegman’s. The FSO has been providing the community with music and enriching its cultural climate so much so that they have added a fifth concert for this year’s performance schedule. They are thrilled to be succeeding in their goal to share the love of music with the Frederick community.

66 FALL 2015
The 28th annual Candlelight Tour of Historic Houses of Worship in historic Downtown Frederick is set for 4-9 pm., Monday, Dec. 28th www.visitfrederick.org
ViSiT iT! “I think that people appreciate the tour not only as an opportunity to step inside some of Frederick’s most beautiful, historic private homes, but also as a chance to see these spaces decorated for the holiday season,” said Jen Martin, events coordinator for Celebrate Frederick, Inc., the organization that puts together the event each year. Ticket proceeds fund the many free public events hosted by the City of Frederick throughout the year, including Frederick’s 4th – An Independence Day Celebration, the Sunday night Summer Concert Series in Baker Park and September’s In The Street celebration. In addition to helping to fund these events, proceeds also benefit local beautification projects. “All of the home decorations incorporate the homeowners’ unique traditions and styles in a way that is both breathtaking and inviting,” Martin said. “Many of the ideas can be easily integrated in to anyone’s home décor and holiday decorating.” Tickets will be available for sale at several Downtown Frederick locations for $20 beginning the first full weekend of November. The ticket allows for admission to the tour on both Saturday and Sunday, and includes the official Candlelight House Tour booklet containing home descriptions and a walking map. On the weekend of the tour, tickets will be available for $25. A special “Home & Garden Ticket Package” is also being sold exclusively online at www.celebratefrederick.com. It includes admission to the holiday tour as well as the Beyond the Garden Gates Garden Tour, which occurs in Spring 2016. Another illuminating option for celebrating the holiday season in historic Frederick is the 28th annual Candlelight Tour of Historic Houses of Worship, set for Monday, Dec. 28. This tour is also self-guided, and allows participants to visit a number of historic worship sites in Frederick’s downtown Historic District. The tour takes visitors along Church, Second, and All Saints Street, where a number of houses of worship are located. Visiting these faith-filled locations helps to celebrate Frederick’s tradition of religious diversity, local history and the holiday season. As the sun begins to set, visitors may tour many of Frederick’s famous clustered spires and other worship sites by candlelight. At each location on the tour, guests will be welcomed with special programs, angelic choirs and nativity scenes. A free tour brochure will be available at the Frederick Visitor Center, 151 S. East St., in Frederick, at participating church sites and at area Roy Rogers restaurants. Brochures will also be available between 3 and 9 p.m., on the day of the tour at the Church Tour Information Center, 19 E. Church St., Frederick. The event is set for 4 to 9 p.m., and is free of charge. - Molly Fellin Spence WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

OVER THE EDGE! If you’re searching for a getaway with accessible excursions and affordable luxury, but don’t want to venture outside of Frederick County, look to Antrim 1844 Country House Hotel in Taneytown. Upon arrival to the property, your eyes will immediately be drawn to the gorgeous architecture of the 10 historically rich structures that encompass the 24-acre plantation. Abundant gardens of handpicked roses, peonies and lilacs create the enchanted feel of a romantic, picturesque escape. Antrim 1844 is named after Major John McKaleb’s home in County Antrim, Ireland. After McKaleb’s daughter, Margaret, married Col. Andrew Ege, the establishment was built in 1844. At the time, the mansion stayed lit with 19th century methane power. Today, those same methane pipes are used to run electricity for air conditioning and lighting in the original structure that has seen minimal changes. Forty rooms in 10 different locations offer visitors the chance to form a unique experience based on how they wish to spend their time. They include the icehouse (a popular spot for afternoon tea), the brick kitchen, the springhouse and the overseer’s wing. The Pavilion Ballroom and pool house are both used for unforgettable events, such as weddings. Dozens are held on the grounds each year, with guest lists from two to 275. While sipping on afternoon tea, we made friends with Betsy and Mike Krener, frequent visitors who applaud Antrim’s packages offered all year long. “We’ve been here a dozen times, including our Thanksgiving dinner with family,” Betsy said. “It’s a getaway that’s close, but feels far away. We love everything from the rooms to the wine and cheese pairings in the summer.” The Kreners also raved about Christmastime at Antrim and inn’s staff ability to turn every inch of the estate into a holiday wonderland of lights and decorations, with outstanding hospitality. In the basement of the main mansion is the Wine Cellar, housing exclusively permitted wines from all over the world. Owners Richard and Dorothy Mollett, alongside General Manager Ruben Cambero, frequently host tastings for wine makers to present wines and earn the opportunity to be included on Antrim’s top-notch menu. Guest lists have included big names in the wine industry, such as Joseph Phelps of renowned Napa Valley and Sonoma Coast wineries.

Cambero is no stranger to the hospitality business. It was in his family’s renowned hotel in Spain that he practiced managing daily property operations with an emphasis on memorable guest experiences. After arriving in the U.S., and accepting a position with Antrim, he went straight to work bringing European culture and his knowledge of genuine hospitality to the historic lodge and Smokehouse restaurant. “Here, everyone is treated the same and is equally important,” Cambero said. “Everyone deserves the same, unforgettable experience.” After waking to breakfast in bed and sunshine glittering across the fresh dew on the lawn, we reluctantly packed our bags to head home. Antrim 1844 was the perfect place to relax and is an exceptionally unique experience no matter when you can get away to enjoy a stay! - Maxann Keller
