As I write this, I realize that this is our 6th fall issue of FiND iT FREDERiCK! Six autumn seasons and we still have things to share with you! Now THAT should tell you something about this great county in which we live. Produced in conjunction with the mad creatives over at Digital Bard, we're especially excited to present our latest project, the FiND iT Adventure Series. Not only can you read all about the way cool things that are in Frederick and the surrounding areas here between our glossy pages, but now you can watch our webisodes! Each video will be posted to our YoutubeÂŽ channel where we'll take you along on some of our crazy, interesting, and sometimes downright silly adventures as we explore everything our area has to offer. Kim Dow is an award-winning graphic designer, lover of animals, supporter of green and sustainable practices for small business, and wife of a motocross rider (which sometimes adds "frequent hospital visitor" to her resume). You can even find her behind the counter each year during Greek Fest. But she is also a friend, daughter, and sister, which has seemed to influence her passion to work with those in the health/wellness, organic, holistic and women-oriented industries. After 8 years as a designer, and then senior designer at a local firm, Kim decided to branch out on her own and created Kalico Design in 2008. She enjoys working with a wide range of clients, including the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, Find It Frederick magazine, American Mothers, Inc., and The Virginia-Maryland Dog magazine among many others. This past year has been a big year of exciting transition for Kalico Design, as Kim added her first full-time employee, Jen, and moved out of her home-based office into an office space in downtown Frederick.

As if she's not busy enough designing, Kim is the co-founder and past artistic director of Equinox Dance Company, an alladult modern dance troupe in the Frederick region. She currently serves as the group's marketing director, as well as a dancer and choreographer. Kim also recently served as president for the American Advertising Federation’s Greater Frederick chapter. In her “spare time”, she enjoys reading, pilates, traveling to the beach, visiting with friends, and working on home projects. Kim is married to her high school sweetheart, Jimmy, who is a high school math teacher by day. They share their Frederick home with their pitbulls Kai and Bruce (the newest addition to the family), their cat (ironically named The Cat Himself), a ball python named Snake Dogg and an array of saltwater fish and corals.

1. What ice cream flavor best describes you? Not sure if it necessarily describes me, but my favorite ice cream flavor is, and always has been, vanilla bean. You just can’t go wrong with something classic and simple. (Although, I did recently discover Edy’s Fudge Tracks ice cream flavor, so that could be dangerous.) 2. What is your favorite word or phrase? That’s a tough one. Right now, I like the phrase “wicked awesome”. Everything just sounds, well, awesomer, with the word wicked preceding it! 3. What three words would your friends and family use to describe you? Hadworking, dedicated, honest (with a touch of sass) 4. What are you most passionate about? While I’m passionate about a lot of things—graphic design, dance, reading, family, animals, community (it goes on and on)—I guess you could say I’m most passionate about doing all the things I love to the best of my ability. That doesn’t mean doing them perfectly, but just doing them the best that I can. 5. Where in Frederick County are you most likely to be found? You can find me in a lot of places around Frederick, I get around (wait, that doesn’t sound right). During the work week, if I’m not at Kalico Design’s office headquarters in downtown Frederick, I’m probably at another downtown business visiting clients or attending a networking or industry event. On Sundays, you’ll find me in the dance studio rehearsing with Equinox Dance Company. And during any other “free time” you’ll find me with my high school sweetheart (now husband) either at home relaxing or hanging out with long-time friends or family.

SHARE iT! I first met Gabe O'Neill and his daughter, MaryMargaret, two years ago when I wrote a piece for this magazine about Kids Are Heroes, the nonprofit organization MaryMargaret launched when she was 9 years old. The mission of the organization is to inspire kids to become leaders in their communities through volunteer service. I met up with the O'Neills again recently and found that many things have changed in the last two years, while many others have remained the same.
Among the things that are different for Kids Are Heroes today? To begin with, try tens of thousands of followers on Twitter. Or perhaps the thousands of likes on Facebook. Then there is the attention and cooperation of various celebrities who, like thousands of others from all over the world have been moved by the mission of Kids Are Heroes and want to take part in it. Not all of the changes are as exciting as these, of course. Certain issues that come about as an organization emerges as a global presence must now be dealt with directly. Issues such as legal representation and protections. Budgets. Strategic plans. Fundraising. Networking. "We're starting to do all of the things that businesses are supposed to do," Gabe told me. Yet the mission of Kids Are Heroes has not changed at all. Still committed to helping kids, still reaching out and making new friends all over the world, and still sensible to what is possible now, both Gabe and MaryMargaret remain equal parts optimistic and realistic about just how much the organization can grow. A goal may be to give the organization a presence equal to the Boy Scouts of America, perhaps. Yet they are taking steps to make that possible by keeping the empowerment of our kids, as opposed to the achievement of fame as the central focus of everything they do. "When you start something like this," Gabe said, "you don't think that's it's going to be this big thing‌you think of how it's affecting people, and then you just want to grow it." SHARE iT! And grow, it has. The number of children registered with the organization, (it should come as no surprise that they are referred to as "Heroes") has climbed to 313 representing 10 different countries, as of summer 2012. All of them are excited to be a part of Kids Are Heroes, in making a difference in the lives of those in their own communities. International friendships have been formed as a result of the organization's efforts from the time of its inception. In the last two years, thanks to technology and social media such as Twitter and Facebook it's become even easier for the Heroes to keep in touch with one another. MaryMargaret mentioned a recent session on Skype she had orchestrated with several other Heroes. "We invited four of our heroes," she explained. "We talked about what they did, and about looking forward to Kids Are Heroes Day. We talked for about an hour about how we're excited to be getting together." That get-together is this year's annual Kids Are Heroes Day, one of the most important days of the year for the organization. This year's celebration takes place on October 27th at the Francis Scott Key Mall, and promises to be the biggest yet. "We have 50 kids coming," Mary Margaret told me. The previous biggest number, in 2011, was 23. Kids Are Heroes Day is a day of speeches, making new friends, spreading the message of their mission, and most importantly of course, empowering kids. Always the highlight of the year for the organization, this year the event promises to be even wider in scope. Gabe joked that

SHARE iT! this year's celebration may begin with a solid half-hour of national anthems being played, so many countries being represented this year by the young Heroes. In keeping with the theme of bigger and better things for Kids Are Heroes Day, this year's guest keynote speaker is the actress Allysin Ashley Arm, most widely known for her role as Zora Lancaster on The Disney Channel show "So Random!" "Up until this year we haven't had that kind of draw to get people to come," Gabe said of Arm's response to MaryMargaret's correspondence. So if this year was the first year Kids Are Heroes could attract such attention, just how much will be different in the future? How many more special guests and how much more special influence might Kids Are Heroes gain several years from now? The O'Neills remain humble, but focused and hopeful. "I would say that if you came back in five years we would have an office in Frederick…and a chapter all over the world," Gabe said. Neither I nor the O'Neills can predict the future. Yet if the success, positive change and publicity for Kids Are Heroes should increase over its next five years as much as it has over the last several, I have little doubt that Gabe's prediction can come to pass. I harbored a nagging skepticism. Dublin (and Ireland in general) is known for its poetry, woolen products, music, tea, whiskey and beer: but NOT its coffee. In fact, coffee shops in Dublin often advertise either an Italian or an American theme, and one of the most popular blends over there is the “Americano.� But as a lover of independent cafes struck with curiosity by the strange moniker, I had to give it a try.
An Irish thing or not, the delicious aroma of roasting beans that met my nose upon crossing the threshold immediately dispelled any doubt in my mind that this place was serious about coffee. Because the few sips of generic coffee I braved as a child were too bitter for a young tongue, I had only recently acquired a taste for the soothing brew of the bean. But the rich fragrances filling the air compelled even my hesitant senses to obey the summons. I abandoned my original plan of easing into the new coffee shop by trying

the chai and instead went straight for the mocha, a special blend of chocolate with their 100% organically grown coffee. Perhaps this is petty, but the first thing I noticed when ordering my drink was that their prices are ridiculously low, like at least 25% less than at the national chain places, and that’s just for the first cup. Refills on most of the coffees are free, while they will gladly remake your specialty drinks for half the original price. While the prices are about a quarter lower than certain popular places, the quality is about twice as delicious. I’ve never had another mocha quite that rich and smooth, meeting the perfect balance of bitter and sweet. As I slowly sipped on my newfound treat, I spent some time looking around and was more confused than ever by the Irish name. I was in love with the creatively comfortable look of the place. The walls are covered in local art for sale and the floor is furnished with mismatched sofas, armchairs and coffee tables. Along one wall you can buy handmade jewelry and there is a little stand that sells treats such as local honey and bags of roasted coffee. But the only Irishness I could detect were two road-signs pointing the way to Dublin in the Irish language. I was stumped, so I started chatting with Serina Roy, the enthusiastic owner who explained that she pretty much ran into the name by accident. She started roasting high-quality organic coffee from her home as a hobby, giving it away

to friends and co-workers. She was surprised to discover that her friends were ravenous for her coffee and that they started offering her money to make large batches of it. Not wanting to get in trouble with the IRS, she said that she found herself needing to file for a business license overnight, and realized that she didn’t even have a name. So to keep things simple, she just named the business after the street where she lives: Dublin Road. It’s a great story to go with a great business! Since my first visit in March (yes, near St. Patrick’s Day) I’ve spent lots of time there. Mostly I just sit on their comfy couches enjoying their free WiFi, but I’ve also discovered it is a GREAT place to grade my students’ English papers. If you need something to do, they have several chessboards available, and a few times a month they host live musical performances. On a beautiful afternoon in September, they hosted our motley crew for what would turn out to be an amazing experience for all of us. Clive first had the nine of us gather in a circle with a large ring. He then gave us some instruction on what he hoped we would accomplish. Together we problem solved, struggled, and laughed. A lot! Once we had some success with that, he then moved us to the first ropes course, and then on to the zip line. Each activity was designed to help us work together as a team, build our confidence, as well as help us have a good time in spite of our individual fears. The final personal battle came in the form of a giant pole. The intention was to climb the pole, situate

ViSiT iT! oneself at the top, and then leap into the air to catch a trapeze bar that was seemingly taunting me from a distance. I'd survived everything else and I trusted that Clive wouldn't send me to my death, so up I climbed. Now... I'm not afraid of heights, however, I do have a very healthy respect for them. Arriving at the top at what seemed like an hour later, it took everything I had to get myself turned around and feeling secure enough to jump off toward the bar. As the cheers from my co-workers and Clive reached my ears, I trusted the process and leapt toward the bar. I missed but that bar by what felt like a mile but that doesn't mean I failed. We had all managed to do things that our bodies and minds told us just might not be possible. Talk about empowering! Whichever activity you choose, your group can experience rewarding challenges in a safe, supportive environment and you will enjoy camaraderie and the benefit of expert leadership. Frederick is often referred to as one of Maryland’s most haunted cities. There is certainly a great deal of paranormal activity rumored to be in the area. So don’t be surprised if after a visit you catch yourself checking the back seat of your car or cautiously peering under your bed!
There are many locations around Frederick County for you to visit that boast some interesting inter-dimensional happenings. The Historical Society of Frederick County is located in a house built in 1834. The building housed the Loats Female Orphanage prior to its purchase by the historical society. The most fascinating feature of this home, however, is not how old it is, but rather the mysterious woman in white that has a habit of startling the society’s volunteers. (Wonder if the asking price was inflated to include the purchase of this feisty apparition?) A “Miss Hannigan” type didn’t run this orphanage. There are numerous historical documents that attest to the happiness that many of the girls found at Loats. Various volunteers at the historical society have reported running into (or possibly through) the very pale woman in a white dress whose hair is worn in a bun. Sometimes they have met in the hallways, other times she kicks back in an old rocking chair. Others have heard music coming from an old Grafanola (an old wind-up phonograph) when no one has been around to start it. Storage trunks seem to get up and move on their own. Volunteers think that this content and mischievous girl is probably an orphan who found her one true home at Loats.

Other places in Frederick are said to have apparitions that have settled in. The spirit of a young boy who sadly drowned in a bathtub reportedly occupies the Ceresville Mansion. Barry Hall, located at the Maryland School for the Deaf Frederick Campus, has been visited by many of the former occupants of this girls’ dorm. One of these ghostly visitors is said to be evil. Evidence was found in a local cemetery of this individual’s actual existence in the 1800s. You probably don’t want to get on her bad side while visiting! The Hood College campus was built on the grounds of an old Civil War era saloon. Supposedly, visitors can still whoop it up with the phantom patrons of old, as it is said one can still hear their drunken hooting and hollering. Perhaps you could participate in some supernatural karaoke? Just remember, things could get ugly if your tune is off key. The Landon House Mansion, which is located in Urbana just south of Frederick, is rumored to routinely be disturbed by doors opening and closing, lights turning on and off without explanation, and music emanating from the ballroom. Perhaps these ghosts long for the days of disco? The Tyler-Spite House on Frederick's Record Street, is also a local haunt. Previously, this home was run as a bed and breakfast giving many ghost enthusiasts the opportunity to spend the night in a real haunted house. Even though you can no longer personally experience this local haunt, the legend still holds that a former resident of the home awoke every night to discover a man standing at the foot of her bed. Perhaps he had chocolates for turndown service!

Of course there are a few even more somber stories that circulate throughout the area as Frederick County saw significant losses associated with the Battle of Antietam. The ghosts of soldiers who died in the Civil War as our country was struggling for a national identity are said to still roam those battlefields. More tales abound regarding the Hessian soldiers of the Revolutionary War era whose spirits still linger on the grounds of the Maryland School for the Deaf. If you feel ill prepared to venture into the world of ghosts and ghouls on your own, you may be interested in taking one of the tours offered by Candlelight Ghost Tours of Frederick. The ghost tour will help you get acquainted with some Frederick County ghosts and their tales. These tours are conducted from June through November. Tour guides in period costumes play medium for these trips to the other side. The journey lasts approximately 90 minutes and covers a mile and a half of streets and alleys throughout the historic district. Walking is required but motor coach tours are available upon request. LEARN iT! The Frederick Rock School was born of dreams such as these. When Scott Marceron was growing up in Brunswick, he always knew he wanted to be a musician. “I was that 12-year-old kid taking lessons at the mall, going home to practice in the hopes of getting better,” he says. He longed for an opportunity to perform with others. “But,” he says, “it was tough to find kids who wanted to play the same kind of music together, and even tougher to find a place to practice and get it all together.” His parents were the “cool” ones who offered their basement for rehearsals, but the band had to wrap it up before complaining neighbors came home from work each day. Marceron was 15 when he started playing bass in local bands. More than 20 years later, he has worked in nearly every aspect of the music business, from performing and touring to scouting, to management, with an impressive roster of clients including Kid Rock. He was working in the Philadelphia area when he visited a music school founded by a friend. “I had goosebumps walking out of there,” he says. “I thought, ‘This is what Frederick County needs, a place where kids can get together and play with people who are really trained and have experience as instructors.’”

LEARN iT! It took about two years for Marceron to get Frederick Rock School up and running. He recruited teachers with in-the-trenches experience in the music business. “Everyone who works here has done it on some level – had a record deal, toured the country, or is an active performing musician right now.” Marceron’s wife, Kela, for example, is a dancer and classically trained vocalist who serves as the school’s co-director and vocal instructor. Other instructors are guitarists, percussionists, or pianists, and the school even employs a DJ. Students take one weekly private lesson on their instrument of choice, focusing on technique and music theory. Simultaneously, they are placed in bands of students with similar ability and interest. Weekly lesson content is typically based on the scales and chords in pieces selected for performance. Each band is assigned an instructor/manager to oversee weekly rehearsals. After 12 weeks, the groups perform on stage in themed events at Champion Billiards Sports Café in Frederick. “That’s the whole point of the program and why it’s successful. It gives them something to look forward to and work towards,” Marceron explains. While kids taking traditional music lessons are often loath to sit down and practice, Marceron says that his students improve quickly because they typically play every day. They are highly motivated, he says, “because there’s a show in 12 weeks and four or five other kids counting on you. And it’s a real show, with a real audience of 300 people.” Students range in age from 5 to 70; the school currently works with two all-adult groups. Several bands have been together since the school opened two-and-a-half years ago. The more advanced groups are encouraged to write and perform their own songs as well. As the school’s enrollment and reputation have grown, its bands have been invited to perform at many area venues. Students opened for Motley Crue and Poison at Outlaw Jam II in Frederick last year and played the main stage at Meriwether Post Pavilion at the prestigious M3 Rock Festival. A group fronted by a 9-year-old was

LEARN iT! the opening act for Everclear at Crumland Farms’ Rock the Farm event last May. A video of the performance went viral and garnered more than 3 million hits. While accomplished performers are spreading their wings, Marceron also welcomes brand-new musicians to the fold. After two to three months of lessons, he says they are typically ready to join a group. This fall, DJs from Key 103-FM and 106.9-FM the Eagle, are participating in a one-month musical boot camp. They will conclude their training with a concert on stage together at downtown Frederick’s In the Street festival in September. Marceron believes it’s important to contribute to the community, and his bands participate often in benefit concerts and other charitable events, such as a recent breast cancer fundraiser held in honor of one of the school’s survivors. Marceron speaks of students and staff as if they are family. Of course, his own five children are also involved in the family business. His 10-year-old son is a talented percussionist whose band has performed as far away as Florida and who plans to travel to Los Angeles to record in the Foo Fighters’ studio. The school itself is housed in an unassuming building, tucked between warehouses and offices. Open the door and enter another world. Walls are painted a vibrant red with white stripes and adorned with record covers. A snack bar, a game room, and a homework area with Wi-Fi access, accompany the drum sets, amps, and keyboards—a musician’s paradise. Marceron keeps the building open six days per week; programs run year-round, with open enrollment as well as camps in the summer. He encourages students to “hang out” whenever they please. Many, he says, come straight from school, do their homework, and then find an empty practice room to jam. “I have no behavior problems here, and I’ve never had to tell a student to leave,” he says. “They all respect the space.”

LEARN iT! Enrollment has grown to about 150, and Marceron has opened affiliated schools (called Let There Be Rock School) in Columbia as well as in a Philadelphia suburb. The concept’s appeal is obvious. “Kids who want to play music want to apply and use what they’re learning,” Marceron says. “They don’t want to be sitting in their room air-guitaring, playing by themselves. TEABLE progressions

When my endodontist proffered headphones and a menu of soothing tunes to get me through my root canal, I had no idea I was about to experience the benefits of music therapy. However, as anyone who has dragged an MP3 player to Labor and Delivery knows, music has the power to decrease one’s perception of pain (as well as the need for painkilling drugs) and to increase endurance in the face of adversity. Do you jog to a playlist of upbeat tunes? Do you do Jazzercize, aerobics, Zumba? Then you already know what the science shows—music is a motivator and a distractor that benefits the body, mind, and soul.
Darcy Lipscomb was that music-loving kid who actually enjoyed taking piano lessons, who joined the marching band, who studied jazz, who knew she always wanted music to play a central role in her life. While still in school, she read an article about music therapy, and thought, “That fits perfectly with my personality.” She says, “I started researching it more and fell in love with the profession and the possibilities that it opened up.” According to the American Music Therapy Association, music therapy is “the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.” (Whew!) In layman’s terms, this means that music therapists have an opportunity to help clients of all ages and with a variety of abilities and needs. In Lipscomb’s college program, she took courses in music history and theory, anatomy and physiology, special education and psychology to prepare for her future career. Throughout, she never wavered in her conviction that this was the right path for her. WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

A native of West Virginia, Lipscomb attended school in North Carolina and completed an internship in Iowa before becoming certified and taking her first job in Arizona. When funding for her position was cut, she accepted a job in Frederick—only to arrive and discover that her new job had been eliminated. Undaunted, Lipscomb liked the idea of living in Frederick; she saw a need in the community and decided to stay and open her own practice. Meanwhile, she accepted a corporate position and started seeing clients on a part-time basis. In May, her business had grown to the point that she was able to leave her day job and devote all of her time to Noteable Progressions. Lipscomb sees patients who have had strokes and traumatic brain injuries; nursing home residents with dementia; children with autism and speech delays. Each has an individualized treatment plan, often developed in conjunction with physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, schools, and family members. “For people with Alzheimer’s and dementia, music is processed in the brain differently from speech,” Lipscomb explains. “So I can go into a facility, and the client isn’t able to tell me their name, but they can finish the words of the songs that I’m singing. It’s so exciting,” she continues. “Whenever we start giving instructions through the music, people come alive. It gives them a purpose and a meaning that has been taken from them.” Lipscomb describes a client with dementia who was once an accomplished pianist. In the nursing home, she had completely withdrawn from others and was sleeping most of the day. Now, Lipscomb says, “I’ll start playing the foundation of a song, and she’ll fill in the melody, she’ll improvise on top. It’s still 100 percent there.” Children with autism often have difficulty making eye contact and expressing their choices. But, Lipscomb says, if you ask a child whether he wants to play an egg shaker or a tambourine, “he’ll let you know because he wants to participate with you.” Lipscomb explains how this ability to communicate can be transferred to other functional goals. Children “can start verbalizing their choices, emotions, and needs.”
When it comes to speech, she says, “If we’re working on forming ‘p’ sounds, then we can start to play recorder because it brings their lips together. Then I will write a song with a lot of ‘p’ sounds, then finally transfer this skill to speaking,” fading the music cues until the sound is formed independently. In group therapy, she may have everyone play the same song, but the specific instrument choice is based on individual treatment goals. A client who needs to work on bilateral coordination will use a drum and drumstick; a client who needs to improve his grasp will hold an egg shaker. When asked to describe her typical day, Lipscomb laughs. “I don’t have a typical day,” she says. “Today I had a group at a retirement community, then an individual at a facility for people with disabilities, then another retirement community for one individual, then two private clients I see in their homes.” Paperwork comprises another large chunk of her time—planning treatments and goals; documenting progress; and insurance paperwork as her practice begins accepting third-party payment. Lipscomb notes that she took a leap of faith when she decided to start her own practice, but her business has increased steadily via word of mouth. “I take every opportunity that I can to educate people about what music therapy is,” she says. As music therapist Barbara Crowe states, it “can make the difference between withdrawal and awareness, between isolation and interaction, between chronic pain and comfort—between demoralization and dignity." Starving

The term “starving artist” has been around for quite some time, as far back as the 19th century. The concept of the starving artist itself has been depicted within paintings, literature, opera, and the like. A starving artist is often seen as one who sacrifices material well-being in order to focus on his art. One reason for this is because of the difficulty of breaking into the biz, as they say. You can say there are several starving artists in the Frederick area.
But then, there are artists like Antonio Tobias Mendez. Toby, as he is mainly known, has been a practicing artist for more than 25 years. He started showing his artwork with his father in 1985, while still in college. His first commission came in 1986 while working at a foundry. He went straight into the art field right after college. Back then, it was (and often still is) tough to make a living as an artist, so Toby took any type of sculptural job early on. “The goal was how can I stay in the studio,” he said, as long as it didn’t belittle what he was doing or compromise his principles. Born in Colorado in 1963, Toby spent most of his childhood overseas while his dad Tony (portrayed in the movie “Argo” by Ben Affleck) served in the CIA. When his father took a federal government assignment in D.C. the family moved to the Maryland, near Knoxville. At an early age, Toby attended sculpture classes and honed his fine art skills in a gifted and talented summer program for young artists held at Goucher College. By the age of 16, as a result of this experience, he knew he wanted to be artist. WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

Toby apprenticed under the Academy Award-winning makeup sculptor John Chambers and then studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. While at the Art Institute, Toby learned the processes of bronze casting practiced by sculptors and fine art foundries for centuries. As a student, he lived in Spain for a year where he studied the techniques used in creating large-scale monuments. No one particular artist has influenced his work, as he says it depends on the project he is undertaking. For example, Noguchi comes to mind in regards to space and site design. Toby has worked out of his Maryland studio since 1988 and primarily focuses on the figure, combining a classical figurative approach with a contemporary eye for site design. In addition to creating lasting legacies through public art, Toby continues to create personal works for acquisition by private collectors. As he looks over his full body of work, he is proud of the times when he could be prolific. He is proud of the diverse nature in his work, as he doesn’t just focus on one genre, although he says two of his better pieces were commissioned sculptures of Gandhi and Thurgood Marshall. Currently, local folks are more familiar with his John Hanson statue that was officially dedicated at the Frederick County Courthouse in August as well The Baltimore Orioles, the six statues of legendary players being dedicated this year as part of Camden Yard’s 20th anniversary. Although the bulk of his earnings comes from public art commissions, he has shown his work in galleries all over the East Coast, including Frederick, D.C., New York, South Carolina, as well as Nevada, and other parts out west. He is

working on putting together a gallery show of his work that will take place in his studio in November. Currently, he is working a number of private commissions as well as a sculpture of Henry Belk, the founder of Belk Department Store, for a North Carolina site. He submits as few as one proposal a year and has submitted as many as 10 bids for public art commissions across the country. Ultimately, half of the work he gets is through a competitive process while the other half is referral-based. Toby has seen the arts scene change dramatically in Frederick during his career here. The Delaplaine Visual Arts Center was in its infancy when he moved back after college and, as he puts it, drew artists out of the woodwork. Over the years the arts have become more vibrant and there is “much more variety now,” he said. He points to the Hanson Memorial as an example of the transformation that has been taking place in the city as the project made a pretty big statement in Frederick because of the contributions raised for the project. These days he is active with the Griffin Art Center, among other things. This new facility can be an inspiration for education in the community. The biggest opportunity, however, according to Toby, is in the public art realm. “Frederick is still finding its way,” he suggests and more public art can installed in the community. However, he says that it’s just a matter of time. Like most artists, he particular enjoys those projects that allow the most creative freedom. OVER THE EDGE! greatest individuals in the various disciplines he has worked: sports, civil rights, history, and others. If you haven’t seen the John Hanson sculpture yet, make a point to stop by the Frederick County Courthouse and see it. What folks may not realize is that a national call for artists was issued for this project and drew the interest of some pretty big names in the sculpture world. Yet, a local artist was chosen for the project, highlighting the caliber of artistic talent that exists in this community. So Toby is a prime example of an artist with talent, persistence, and opportunity who doesn’t have to starve.
