and so it is said‌
FiND iT has always been about adventure...helping you, the reader, to find the people, places, and things that we think you'll enjoy experiencing. Some stories may reignite your passion to complete things from your bucket list, and others may challenge you to stretch and grow as a person. One of the happy side effects for me is that I, too, get inspired! Last issue we introduced you to an amazing photographer, Barb Campbell, and her love of taking underwater portraits. I was fortunate to be a part of one of her “water experiences and the results were not just great photos, and a fun FiND iT Adventure Series video (watch it now at youtube.com/finditfrederick), but also real personal growth for me. I could feel myself mentally, emotionally, and physically strengthening from my time in that water. So as the leaves change colors and the air grows crisp, take some time to think about what you and your family can do to stir up the excitement in your lives. The Curious Iguana is a great place to start to discover books that you just won't find anywhere else, Juice Plate will tempt you with some new flavor profiles, or just maybe you'll decide to spend some time volunteering in the community. It all keeps us growing and growth is good. We always strive to present fun, informative, and positive material that we hope will deepen all of our love and appreciation for this great community. So now it's your turn...Don't just be inspired, go be inspiring!

With the summer behind us and the sights and sounds of school buses and children's laughter on the playground filling our senses, we couldn't think of a better way to mark the back to school season than by featuring a local teacher as our Frederick Face! Educator and author Adam Umak teaches 7th and 8th Grade Language Arts at Thurmont Middle School in Frederick County where he has enriched the lives of hundreds of young people over the span of nine years. During those years, he hasn't simply put in his time fostering young minds; he has also led the School Improvement Team, Language Arts Department, Parent-Child Book Club, and created the TMS Comic Book and Graphic Novel Convention. His enthusiasm for igniting a passion for learning is evident not only by watching and listening to his students, but also when he works with other teachers and educational professionals all across Maryland via his book signings, speaking engagements, and professional development workshops. Adam's additional efforts include being an education activist for Frederick County Teacher's Association where he works on Public Relations and Negotiations.

His personal love of teaching, writing, and comics, resulted in his first book, "Folks - Book One: History Repeats Itself," a superheroes-meets-American history adventure. This unusual approach to teaching kids about history was released in 2012. Described as an historical whodunnit adventure featuring Paul Bunyan and John Henry on a ridiculous romp through America's secret past, "Folks - Book One: History Repeats Itself" is intriguing to those young and old alike. His just-released second book, "Tax Returns," is a short story anthology written in collaboration with three former students. In his free time, (Really? He has free time?) Adam enjoys collecting original comic book art, playing board games with friends, and mentally preparing for the inevitable zombie apocalypse. Adam lives alongside the Blue Ridge Mountains with his wife, Jamie. You can download free chapters of his books, listen to his audiobooks via podcast, read his blog, and purchase copies of his awesome books at www.AdamUmak.com. FALL 2013
CHARGE iT!
Ask any frequent Downtown Frederick shopper what’s missing in the city’s retail offerings, and you’ll probably get two answers — a grocery store and a bookstore.
Though a grocery is still elusive, a unique, independent bookseller called Curious Iguana has opened its doors in a prime spot on Market Street. And it’s fully stocked with more than 1,600 books for young children through adults, including cookbooks, novels, journals, magazines, graphic novels, picture books, bestsellers and books you’ve never heard of. The owners of Curious Iguana are familiar faces to the downtown scene: Marlene and Tom England, the husband-and-wife team behind Dancing Bear Toys and Gifts. With the relocation of Dancing Bear to a larger retail space at 15 E. Patrick Street this summer, the Englands were able to birth Curious Iguana, a book and gift shop with a global focus, at the toy store’s former home, 12 N. Market St. The toy store first opened in Frederick in 2000, then moved to 12 N. Market in 2003. The Englands had an eye on expansion for the toy shop for a while, and considered opening another branch in a new town. “But nothing was like Frederick,” according to Marlene, who said she and Tom had an “epiphany” while on a road trip in late December 2011. They could expand the Bear in their favorite city, and challenge themselves by also opening an independent bookstore that not only sold books, but also gave back to the global community via microfinance loans (see sidebar: “What’s a Benefit Corporation?”). Once they found the perfect location to move the Bear, the Englands plunged ahead with plans for the Iguana. Originally, the thought was to create a shop full of kids’ books, since they were consistently a best seller at the Bear, despite their small footprint within the store. But loyal customers and employees convinced the Englands to WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM
33
CHARGE iT! expand the focus to books for all ages, and now children’s titles make up only about one-third of offerings. As the Bear sells not just any toys, but those that nurture creativity (without the help of batteries!), the Iguana aims for more than selling just any books. The Englands have created a truly curated collection of books, by leafing through thousands of book reviews and poring over spreadsheets of book titles for the last several months. And they’ve had help from two employees who have particularly relevant backgrounds for working at a bookshop. Kari Metzger Kelly and Julie Tobiason both worked for the Englands at the Bear when the bookstore idea materialized. And Kelly and Tobiason just so happened to both have years of experience as librarians with Frederick County Public Libraries. The two literally jumped up and down at the thought of helping to select books for Curious Iguana, and spent many hours looking at booklists, sharing titles and genres that they’d like to include, and choosing tomes especially for youngsters, including beginners through middle school level readers. As mothers themselves, Kelly and Tobiason also selected unique parenting titles they believed would resonate with the Frederick community, such as “Peace, Love and Friendship,” and “Buddhism for Mothers,” which Kelly recommends as great reading for moms and dads alike. Tobiason and Kelly chose titles that “both kids and families would not necessarily see every day,” and even created a special section called “You Are Awesome Just the Way You Are,” with books that praise the uniqueness of children. “There are a lot of great titles at Curious Iguana for kids that will begin to open their eyes to the world - not just their world that they see every day, but the world through the eyes of another child, country, culture or belief,” Tobiason said.
34
FALL 2013
CHARGE iT! Kelly and Tobiason join several other of the store’s employees in specifically recommending titles that can be viewed on a shelf near the store’s entrance called “Staff Picks.” Peeking out of the corner of each book is a small sheet of paper with the employee’s name and an explanation of why he or she thinks you should buy that book. For instance, Kelly suggests “Wildwood,” by Colin Meloy, as her “favorite new middle-grade series… Meloy has created a world that will fascinate boys and girls,” Kelly says. “And the writing is creative enough to keep readers of every age on the edge of their seats!” A recent recommendation from Tobiason is “Dinner With the Smileys: One military family, one year of heroes, and lessons for a lifetime.” She calls it “a great book with a relatable family… with an exciting idea (to) invite someone new to dinner every week! Who does that?” The Iguana’s cookbook section is filled with alternative titles that the Englands have found inspiring, as they adjust the way they eat. Books such as “Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition,” by T. Colin Campbell, and “The Whole Belly Cookbook,” by William Davis sit alongside famed food writer Michael Pollan’s latest “Cooked” and “Forks Over Knives, The Cookbook” and “GlutenFree Girl Every Day.”
35
CHARGE iT! Could you find these titles online or at a big box store? Many of them, yes. But that doesn’t concern Marlene England. She knows that in order to have a successful retail business these days, you must stand out from the crowd and offer something different, an experience. To that end, the Iguana will soon play host to author chats, book signings, and Skype sessions between customers and writers who cannot attend talks in person. Above all, Marlene and Tom feel strongly about “having a purpose” behind their businesses, and while selling books or toys is, of course, their goal, the Bear and Iguana exist for reasons beyond personal profits. “Tom and I believe that businesses—and individuals—can do much to change the world, and even the smallest efforts can have a positive impact,” Marlene said. “As much as we’re excited about bringing an independent bookstore to Downtown Frederick, we’re even more excited about engaging a community of people who care about this world we all share. This is definitely not going to be your typical bookstore.” Curious Iguana 2 N. Market St., Frederick 301-695-2500 www.curiousiguana.com
36
FALL 2013
CHARGE iT! What’s a Benefit Corporation? More than a year before it officially opened, Curious Iguana became what is believed to be the first benefit corporation established in Frederick County, and one of about 50 such entities in the state. So, what is a benefit corporation? Well, basically, for every book or product purchased, part of the proceeds will be shared with international nonprofits that “are making a world of difference,” according to Iguana co-owner Marlene England. Iguana customers will help select recipients for microfinance loans that will be made from the bookstore to Kiva, a nonprofit organization that loans funds to help low-income individuals lift themselves out of poverty. Microfinance plays on the idea that people in poverty are capable of lifting themselves up if given access to banking services that they typically cannot access. Benefit corporations have a corporate purpose to create a material positive impact on society and the environment; are required to consider the impact of their decisions not only on shareholders but also on workers, community, and the environment; and are required to make available to the public an annual benefit report that assesses their overall social and environmental performance. “Benefit corporations … allow socially conscious consumers and investors the freedom of choice to support businesses they believe in, while giving those businesses the freedom to make long-term decisions rather than focus on short-sighted, narrow goals,” according to Laura E. Jordan of The Capital Law Firm in Washington, D.C., who worked with the Englands to establish their benefit corporation. Maryland is one of 12 states — plus Washington, D.C. — that has passed legislation to accept benefit corporations as a new class of corporation that voluntarily meets higher standards of corporate purpose, accountability, and transparency. “Becoming a benefit corporation is a perfect fit for us, since we want the Iguana to be positioned from the start as a very unique company that does well by doing good,” England explained. To learn more about benefit corporations, visit www.benefitcorp.net. To learn more about Kiva, go to www.kiva.org.

Getting on our feet‌ sometimes it helps to follow the path and sometimes it help to take the lead. The Woman to Woman Mentoring Program (W2WM) leads Frederick County women ages 18-35 to begin their path on the journey to success. The W2WM program pairs young women with career women who are further along on the path of life experience. The pairs work together to define and move to the next steps in the mentee’s life. Housed at Frederick Community College, W2WM provides mentees with a supportive relationship to give them the opportunity to learn, grow and achieve personal success.
The mentoring model of pairing a 9-month program with individual attention, as well as group social and educational activities is unique in Frederick County. The program blends a one-on-one relationship, group educational sessions (evening sessions, also open to the public) and social enterprise (W2WM Pop-Up Shop) to help mentees define and develop goals for career, education, life and family.

SHARE iT! The non profit is funded through in-kind donations of space and operational support from FCC, foundation grants, a purse auction called Clutch the Future (a joint fundraising effort with the FCC Foundation), community donations from individual and civic groups such as Rotary and the Women’s Giving Circle and, since September 2012, a social enterprise – the W2WM Pop-Up Shop. Our social enterprise is a blend of fundraising and education; a for-profit business established to fund a non-profit’s mission. The W2WM Pop-Up Shop/ social enterprise is designed to move W2WM toward financial stability and sustainability - but let's face it - fashion is fun and creating a business around it is a perfect match. The W2WM Pop-Up Shop opens monthly inside Select Seconds (8 E Patrick St., Frederick) and is a volunteer driven business that sells gently worn career clothing. Our advisory board and community volunteers organize and staff the store. Our mentees also volunteer in the effort, where they learn transferable soft skills to build their resumes (i.e., effective communication, career planning, organizational structure, sales & marketing, community outreach, design, customer service), relationships and confidence. The W2WM Pop-Up Shop benefits the W2WM program in 3 ways: • earning income • engaging mentees and teaches them work and personal skills • raising the visibility of the program by helping recruit new mentees and mentors The W2WM Pop-Up Shop is open at FMH's thrift store, Select Seconds, on first Saturdays - except January and July and on the FCC or Hood Campus and at local events around town. To expand learning opportunities for the mentees and raise additional funds for the program the social enterprise committee has "popped up" at FCC - and plans are underway to pop up in other locations in Frederick County. The group uses social media like Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter to promote the shops and highlight the most intriguing fashion. Updates appear on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/pages/Womanto-Woman-Mentoring/162004603824834.

This small chain restaurant has six locations in Virginia and now one here in Frederick. The staff is welcoming and the food is plentiful and delicious. Personal favorites are the toltecos parrillada (grilled steak, chicken, and chorizo) and the carnitas tacos al carbon (the hot sauce is, well...hot!). When we can stop eating our entrees soon enough to have leftovers for lunch the next day, the meal is topped off with a shared fried ice cream. Order it and see if you can identify the flavor of each sauce that decorates the plate! www.lostoltecosrestaurant.com 1305 W. Seventh Street, Suite 19 Frederick, MD 21701 301-846-0030

MOVE iT!
I am a football mom. Not flag football. Not “real” football more commonly known as soccer. Tackle football. Have been for a couple of years now. Having two boys in the local youth football program, people wonder: why do I let them play? They wonder if I’m afraid of them being hurt. And if I’m pushing them for my own gain because I really want them to grow up to be professional football players.
My answers: I don’t, of course, and not even remotely. Allow me to elaborate. I don’t “let” my sons play football. I choose to encourage them to live what’s in their hearts. When it comes to my middle son, football is his passion. It’s what gets him up in the morning. It’s what he goes to sleep thinking about. It’s something that he feels drawn to from his arteries on out. It’s not all he cares about, but it

MOVE iT! is certainly very near to the top of his list. I couldn’t take that away from him. I wouldn’t take that away from him. Not unless I had to. But, not because of fear. That’s no way to live. But, my desire to let them follow their hearts doesn’t mean that I don’t think about something bad happening to them every time they set their cleats on the field. Just like I do when I put them on the bus to school every day, or when I let them go to a friend’s house without me, or when I let them swim in the lake, or skateboard in the street, or jump off of the dresser (OK, so I don’t ever let them do that last one, they do that one even though I explicitly tell them to not to!). Risk is always an issue, and I’m pretty much always afraid that something is going to hurt them. For us, the reward is just worth it; the confidence, and the joy, and the everything they get from being on that football team is worth it. Could it get to a point where it’s not? Sure, but so far it hasn’t, and them being happy in their hearts is more important than me making myself feel better. And, do I think they are going to be football players? Doesn’t really matter what I think or want. All I care about is what they want and the truth. They may want to be for real football players one day, and that’s cool. I will cheer for them, support them, and expect a sweet ride and a yard with a pool if they ever go pro. But, I also keep it real. The likelihood that they will ever even play this (or any) collegiate sport at a D1 or D2 school is so low that my basically nonexistent math skills can’t even calculate it. I may not be the smartest mom on the block, but I know we aren’t hanging our hats on that. We won’t sacrifice their academics for any sport, we look at it as more of an added bonus, a character building activity, and a way to stay physically fit. We tell them to keep their grades up then they can play football, not keep your grades up SO you can play football. Doesn’t mean we don’t strive for excellence on the field, just means we have a little something I like to call perspective. And knowledge. Last year I joined the Heads Up Football Advisory Committee along with a number of other prominent people in the football community, to both get more informed about keeping kids safe on the football field, and to become an advocate for youth athletes of every kind. USA Football designed the Heads Up Football coaches education program. Their curriculum of nationally accredited courses uses content created from football experts and health professionals to train youth football coaches. The Heads Up

MOVE iT! program provides coaches with equipment fitting training, concussion awareness, and Heads Up tackling techniques to help take the head out of the game of football making it a better, safer game for today’s youth. Here in Frederick County, and all across the nation, youth football teams are scrambling to get their coaches trained, for the good of the game, and for the safety of the children. As a mom, I feel safer knowing that my coaches understand the signs and symptoms of a concussion. I trust that they have fitted my son’s equipment correctly and are teaching them better, more developmentally appropriate, and safer tackling techniques. I appreciate that this new way of learning will help protect them on the field today while also making them better, more efficient players long term. Mostly, I feel empowered. Since I joined the Heads Up Football Advisory Committee and have had the opportunity to learn more about what I can do, right here at home, with my own team, to help ensure my children’s safety, I feel like I have a voice. As a woman who didn’t grow up playing the game of football, I previously felt at a disadvantage in this space. My lack of hands-on knowledge put me on unequal footing with the coaches who for so many years have lived and breathed the game. Now I have a place on the field. I may not be calling out the plays or teaching kids how to punt, but I know that I’m just as much of an expert on what I know as they are, and so do they. Advocating for a better, safer game of football has become more than just something I do because I don’t want my children hurt; it’s become my passion. A passion that I hope other parents will actively pursue to keep their kids safe as they learn to play this amazing sport. For more info about Heads Up Football: usafootball.com/headsup

Established just this past spring by newlyweds Keirsten and Alissa, Glory Doughnuts is the latest addition to Frederick's fabulous treats for the young, the old, the foodies, and the doughnut freaks. Apparently, the food most missed by vegans is the mighty doughnut! This inspired the dynamic duo to create a doughnut that is to-die-for, that nothing actually had to die for! These are 100% vegan, mostly organic confections that feature fair trade chocolate, NO dyes or preservatives and local ingredients whenever possible. Flavors include Maple Bacon Bourbon and The Carinvale. Frederick has always had a heart of giving. With several gala events for various non-profits, organizations that provide social services, and even small “giving clubs, Frederick County residents are givers. They step up with volunteer hours, product donations, as well as cold, hard cash. So the fact that the concept of social enterprise is taking hold here, makes perfect sense.

SAVOR iT! So what exactly does social enterprise mean, you ask? Well... according to wikipedia, it is “an organization that applies commercial strategies to maximize improvements in human and environmental well-being, rather than maximizing profits for external shareholders. Social enterprises can be structured as a forprofit or non-profit, and may take the form of a mutual co-operative organization, a disregarded entity, a social business or a charity organization.” Which basically means that while many businesses would consider themselves to have social objectives, the ultimate goal of a social enterprise is giving first...profit second. Frederick's latest entrance into the the social enterprise arena is Juice Plate, the collaboration between Rockwood Brown Business Development and Seed of Life Nurseries Non-Profit. The juice and sandwich shop is located in the Bernard Brown Building on Market Street, near the corner of 7th Street. Juice Plate's tag line is “Fresh Squeezed Comfort Food,” and the menu focuses on healthy, nutritious meals made from farm fresh, local produce. They offer salads, wraps, sandwiches, and of course a dizzying array of fresh-squeezed juices and smoothies at reasonable prices. The goal of the partnership between Rockwood Brown Business Development and Seed of Life is to develop a business, that they can together use to enhance and improve the community. The primary goal being to provide Seed of Life with an additional outlet with which they can promote locally based agriculture, educate, and help low-income community members understand the link between farming, food, and health. Together, they hope to create a social enterprise that is self-sustaining financially.

The partnerships don't stop there. Local artists spent the weeks prior to opening day, designing and painting nearly every surface in the space. The whimsy and fun of the interior spills onto the menu. With a juice called Celestial Farming and a smoothie dubbed the Berry White, you can't help but have a smile on your face when you're in this place. The farm fresh ingredients do a body good, the interior makes you smile, the menu makes you giggle, and the affordable prices are light on the wallet. Combine all that with the fact that your visit will contribute to the charitable efforts of Seed of Life and that's simply good for the spirit! www.facebook.com/juiceplate 629 N. ViSiT iT!
Words by Melinda Pozzuto
The history of the maze dates all the way back to the ancient Egyptians. It is believed that mazes were an integral part of many of their rituals and formal processions. Later, smaller versions of mazes were inlaid into the floors of cathedrals. These smaller mazes were used in lieu of a much larger pilgrimage when an individual couldn’t fulfill his duty to travel. Often priests had people navigate the maze on their knees as part of their penance. Then, of course, there is the mythical maze that held the Minotaur, the half human, half bull creature. Periodically, young men and women were sent into the maze to become lost and then eaten by this flesh-eating beast. Finally, there were the turf mazes and hedge mazes of England. The only function for these types of mazes appears to have been for the entertainment of royalty.

ViSiT iT! You may not be royalty, but Frederick farmers have set out to entertain you. This autumn, five Frederick area farms will be offering fun and adventure when they open their corn mazes. These are not just a couple of cornstalk bunches tied together and propped up! One of the farms boasts that their maze covers 35 acres of land. Some are haunted and some are aimed at smaller children, while even some may be chock full of zombies. It turns out that there are professional maze designers and builders that help to bring about these giant playgrounds for all ages. Modern-day mazes seem to have some serious design going on. The Maize is the largest company that is involved in creating intricate designs to challenge customers. MazePlay is another group that offers these services. Design companies offer their designs and expertise to farmers who want to host corn mazes. Readymade designs may be purchased or a custom design can be done to integrate that particular farm’s desired theme or puzzle. When setting out to conquer a maze, first you must acquaint yourself with the rules. Each farm has its own to follow. Make sure that you and your crew are familiar with them and understand them. Then you want to make sure that you have the right equipment. This includes comfy walking shoes (some of these mazes cover 8 miles of trails), a flashlight for after dark, and a pencil and paper to help you keep your bearings. Most mazes offer checkpoints where a card is punched or marked to show your progress and to help keep you from getting lost. It also helps when attempting to make it through more challenging parts of the maze. You could take a GPS with you and use that to keep track of your location as well.

ViSiT iT! So get together with some friends and head on out for a weekend. Go through all together, break into teams, or make it every man for himself. See who makes it through the toughest parts, who gets attacked by zombies, and who gets through in the shortest amount of time. Any way you do it, the more the merrier. You should know that a Minotaur most likely will not be awaiting you at the end of your trek but a zombie might! Complete spiritual enlightenment probably won't happen either, but you may find a pumpkin to take home! When I was first approached to write an article about a local marriage counseling service, my initial response was to think I was the wrong person for the job, considering that I’m not married and have no plans to be married anytime soon. What perspective could I hope to contribute to such a weighty subject matter that I know nothing about?
But as the Rev. Robert J. Donk of the Marriage Resource Center for Frederick County explained to me, the best way to work out marriage problems is to solve them before you ever think about saying “I do.” He said that the reason most married couples experience difficulty is that they wait until they are already married to examine what matters most in their lives and relationships. In fact, some of the most important work in preparing for a successful marriage should happen before you even begin looking for that special someone. That is why the Resource Center, which Donk operates with his wife, Cathy, as part of the Frederick Area Ministerial Association, provides counseling for WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

LEARN iT! every stage of the marriage process, all the way from discernment through any difficulty that couples may face in their married lives. The counseling services are free to anyone who needs them, and while this is a faith-based program, Donk says that he is well equipped, and happy, to provide counseling from a secular perspective as well. For the discernment process, the Recourse Center provides guides and questionnaires for single people looking for a relationship. This process forces the future marriage candidate to be really honest about what he or she finds find most important in life. Donk says that young adults focus too much on what matters in the present rather than looking to the future, and are often surprised by what comes up when now turns into later. At 21, you may not care what your parents have to say about who you date, but as you get closer to tying the knot, you might find that you value their feelings and fear their estrangement more than you were prepared to deal with. The same applies for underestimating what you really want in a spouse, such as politics, religion, culture, traditions, etc. That’s not to say that these things are insurmountable barriers, because being honest about their existence can prevent them from becoming just that. Once a couple has found each other and begins to think seriously about marriage, the Center provides guides on how to communicate honestly with each other and, most importantly, how to work through the issues that do crop up. Sometimes if a couple hits what seems like an impassible roadblock, a third party with experience can provide a different perspective. Donk said that he recently helped a couple who came from different backgrounds and couldn’t figure out how to make their families happy with each other, and he came up with a solution that made it possible for them to marry with minimal collateral damage. But even if you’ve gotten into a marriage without the proper preparation and you’re running into serious issues, don’t lose hope, because the Recourse Center has a specific marriage-mentoring program for such situations. His program is comprised of couples who have been through difficult times and have come out the other side happy that they didn’t resort to divorce. When a married couple comes to the center for help, they are assigned a mentor couple who dealt with similar issues but overcame them through counseling. And in Donk’s experience, just a little bit of mentoring goes a long way. He says that he has seen many relationships turn completely around after only a handful of mentoring sessions, sometimes just one. And what is the big secret?

FALL 2013
LEARN iT! Well, mostly just talking and listening. The mentoring couple listens to the problems of the couple in distress and then in turn shares the story of their own troubles. Then together they set up a plan for positive action to rebuild trust and open communication. Apparently many of the problems are resolved simply by honestly communicating the things that the couples should have resolved before taking their vows. I asked Donk why it might not be better for some couples to get divorced if they discover that they didn’t do a good job of working through their issues before marriage, and I was surprised by the answers. He said that because the divorce rate is so high (about 50% of marriages nationally and slightly higher in Frederick County) there is a lot of good data about the long-term effects of divorce on both the individual and societal level. He said that divorce has been shown to increase the likelihood that an individual will face unemployment, homelessness, depression and, yes, future divorce. He also has a host of data and pie charts that show the societal cost of divorce in dollars and cents. For instance, he said that the average employer loses about $8,500 a year for each employee who is going through a divorce due to leaves of absence and diminished productivity. I’m still not sure how I feel about the idea of getting married, but if I ever do head in that direction, I’ll be sure to do my homework first. www.marriagefrederick.org Marriage Resource Center of Frederick County 10105 Kelly Road Walkersville, Maryland 21793 Office: 301-898-8917 Cell: 301-524-8800

Tom and Cathi Musser launched Mt. Musser Kettle Corn in 2005. The fragrance of flavors such as Cinnamon Corn and Crabby Corn soon filled the air at local festivals. The years since have had fans following their noses in search of the Mt. Musser Kettle Corn booth. Search no more, as this successful kettle corn company has put down roots in The Pennsylvania Dutch Market in Hagerstown. oh, and one more thing…
Every year in July, the inventive staff of Flying Dog Brewery retreats to the cooler temps of the Catoctin Mountains to drink…ahem…talk beer. Their annual Brewhouse Rarities pitch session is when teams of employees — from production to accounting to sales and marketing — pitch their ideas for the next year's lineup. Now, while we can't be sure how much beer had been consumed during the decision-making process, we are certain that the new brews will be amazing! And now…(imagine loud clinking of bottles and glassware and table drumming)... The 2014 winners are… • Mango Habanero IPA • Mint Chocolate Stout • Ginger Beer • Agave Lager
• Lemongrass Rice Ale • Hoppy American Wheat • Honey Ale • Dopplebock
Flying Dog will release a new beer every six weeks exclusively in mid-Atlantic markets. All releases will be on draft. However Mint Chocolate Stout, Agave Lager, Hoppy American Wheat, and Dopplebock will also be available in 6-packs. You'll need to wait until Jan. 1, but by then you'll be good and thirsty!
