I LOVE autumn. It's my favorite time of the year. I love the colors, the crisp air, the sweaters and boots that come out of hiding, the smell of freshly cut hay, and all things apple...with cinnamon and/or caramel of course. I've already made my second batch of homemade applesauce and it's only October 1. However, I am not a fan of winter. While I do find a freshly fallen snowcovered field charming, and a crackling fire warm and inviting, you won't find me bundled up, gleefully tossing snowballs and making snow angels. I have been known to roam the house singing the holiday tune, "Christmas is the Warmest Time of the Year," not because I believe it but I'm practicing my PMA (Positive Mental Attitude)! Obviously the song is referring to the warmth of spirit, and not the actual temperatures. There is no denying, this time of year does indeed have a certain warmth to it, especially in a place like Frederick. Frederick County is not only rich in history, it's also rich in tradition. With an endless number of seasonal events happening nearly every weekend, there is never a shortage of great things to do. If you're just not in the spirit, venture out to a festival, drive down any main street throughout the county and explore. Before you know it, the crunching of fallen leaves and the tickle of a soft snowflake will convince you that even though the thermometer says it's cool, it really is the warmest time of the year.

Enter some local fashionistas, whose eye for great clothing and desire to help out a Frederick County treasure came together in 2013 for the first time to host Zoo La La, a fundraising fashion show featuring animal prints and real animals, too. At its inaugural event, Zoo La La raised $7,000, and this year’s planning committee hopes to build on that success. The Catoctin Zoo successful reared another endangered species during the 2014 season — Madagascar’s largest carnivore, the Fossa. Only a few zoos in America have successfully bred and raised Fossa pups and our Catoctin is one of them. The Fossa program is a great example of the great work that Catoctin Zoo is doing – and can continue to do, when they get financial support from the surrounding community via the nonprofit organization Global Wildlife Trust.

The Trust seeks to broaden human understanding of the animal world through educational programs using live animals both on-site at the Catoctin Zoo and through presentations in the community. To support the Trust and the Zoo, Nancy Luse, founder and committee chairwoman for the Zoo La La event, said a fashion show fundraiser was suggested. "Frederick has had a history of fashion shows that were fundraisers, but we wanted to do one with a twist, and since the show is to benefit the animals at the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo, why not introduce people to some of the animals up close,” Luse said. “Last year's show allowed people to meet several animals including a zebra and a camel and at the same time see the latest fashions and gather with their friends — what could be more fun?” Luse added.

Zoo La La allows the community to support the zoo by enjoying a fashion show featuring local clothing boutiques, plus providing a safe environment for attendees to meet and interact with animals from the Catoctin Zoo. Music and food offerings round out the evening. Participating Frederick-area boutiques include Aspire, Velvet Lounge, Alicia L and Citizen Frederick. An auction during the event will include a New York Fashion Week experience, a safari in Kenya and a $1,000 shopping spree to Bloomingdale’s, with a personal shopper. Food will be provided by Juliet’s Italian Market and Café on Church Street in Frederick. For the event’s second year, committee members have added more activities, including a special animal meet-and-greet with the animals before the fashion show kicks off. “We're offering special tickets so a small number of children and their parents can join us from 6 to 7 p.m., and meet the animals. Festivities with the fashion show are for the 21 and older crowd,” said Adrienne Lawrence, Zoo La La committee member.

It’s difficult to describe everything that takes place on the property known as Calleva, just across the Frederick County line in Dickerson. The word “Calleva” can be translated as “where the paths cross.” And that’s a fitting description for this very special farm.

Throughout the year, Calleva hosts something it calls “Dirty Dinners,� a series of seasonal feasts in the countryside, featuring local ingredients, local wines and live music. Upon check-in, guests are presented with a bag of handmade granola and given an overview of wthe evening. Most patrons make their way to the Mocktail Bar first, where they could enjoy a Cucumber and Mint Limeade or a Watermelon and Sage Mimosa alongside a red bean hummus, served with house-made chips during Social Hour. Ingredients for most of the consumables come directly from Calleva Farm. And what cannot be provided Calleva, such as wines and some produce, comes from nearby farms and vineyards.

During the Social Hour before dinner, guests are invited to to walk the grounds, visit the horses and goats, and notice the occasional free range chickens roaming the farm. At every station along the way, staff are on hand to explain the agricultural methods being implemented and to answer questions. For example, egg-producing chickens at Calleva live in portable units that move around the fields which helps create a healthier ecosystem by dispersing nutrients in the soil and eliminating the need for insecticides. Guests can also join a hayride of the entire property, which includes everything from an equestrian training area to a cutting mill. Once the tractor pulls back in, opt for a garden tour. It is wonderful to see the array of produce being grown on site, everything from tomatoes and potatoes to raspberries and pears. In fact, you may spot one of the chefs out cutting mint to be used for that evening’s meal.

When the dinner bell rings, and everyone makes it to their seats, Calleva’s Executive Officer Matt Markoff offers introductory comments and talks about the mission and work at the farm. Matt and his two brothers operate the place, along with lots of staff, throughout the year. Then, it’s time to eat. On the night I visited, the first course was a spring roll with a sweet chili vinaigrette and spiced cucumber sauce (everything but the wrap came from the farm). Then, the menu listed a Deviled Egg Sushi, which was basically a deconstructed deviled egg. Following that was a Mashed Potato Brava with Slow-Roasted Goat in an “Alabama White Sauce” (the chef’s secret recipe). Before the main course, which was a Stuffed Pork Loin, they also presented a Gazpacho. And finally for dessert, we had Honey Roasted Peaches with Mascarpone Cream. The meat, vegetables, herbs and spices all came from Calleva (including the watermelon, sage, cucumber, mint, kidney beans, broccoli, carrots, eggs, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, ham, goat, pork, and honey). The peaches were from Homestead Farm just down the road and the dairy came from Frederick County’s own South Mountain Creamery. The wine served during the meal, including a 2011 Norton Rose, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, were from Casanel Vineyards across the Potomac River in Virginia. The food is taken care of and harvested by summer campers just days before the meal, which is part of the draw for this event. The servers, which have other responsibilities on the farm during the day, walk around

and explain every course. Calleva’s philosophy about food can be summed up in a Barbara Kingsolver quote they have placed on their website: “A food culture is not something that gets sold to people. It arises out of a place, a soil, a climate, a history, a temperament, a collective sense of belonging.” As the last song of the night is played, it is time to say goodbye. It was a fantastic evening and the definition of a true farm to fork dinner. Calleva has so much more to offer. Their mission is to get people of all ages outdoors. The amber waves of grain at Summers Farm cornfield maze this fall will be carved into a design that celebrates the 200th anniversary of verses written by lawyer and poet, Francis Scott Key, that eventually became our national anthem in 1931. Fort McHenry and "bombs bursting in air" will be a patriotic tribute to the Star-Spangled Banner.
While tall ships fill Baltimore’s Inner Harbor for the Star Spangled Spectacular, Summers Farm will be putting the finishing touches on this year's red, white and blue theme for the 18th annual Fall Harvest Festival. For 80 years, this scenic 100 acre working farm in Frederick, has been home to the Summers family. They grow hay, soybeans, wheat, corn and... lots of pumpkins. Fourteen acres of 12-foot tall corn becomes the centerpiece of the fall festival, with paths cut through it in intricate designs to form a maze puzzle for visitors to explore. The farm's call to action is, "Get lost and have fun!" While the farm is open to the public for only six weeks each fall, they pack the days with lots of old-fashioned fun on the farm. drawn hayride around the farm, stopping off at the ever-popular pumpkin patch to choose from thousands that have grown and ripened right here in the field. The historic old barns at the farm house traditional farm animals that are anxious for petting and food treats from visitors. The pigs at Summers Farm will be in training all summer for the races —  and the pig racing arena is a real crowd pleaser each fall, with folks cheering on their favorite porker. Nothing reminds us of fall quite like the smoky scent of a campfire. There are more than 27 little campfires crackling each weekend at the farm, and they are surrounded by sociable groups toasting marshmallows or roasting wieners. Laughter fills the air and there's an occasional burst of song as friends and family grow close to enjoy the warmth of the flames. It's all about family at Summers Farm where the Greenwoods are raising their boys. Activities and attractions are geared toward visitors of all ages. Little folks will enjoy playing in grain bins filled with crunchy corn. There are giant hillside slides, two jumping pillows, a few steers to rope, and hippity-hop balls to bounce around on. Play a round of farm-

flavored miniature golf. Shoot apples from a big cannon! Ride ponies or take a ride on the little Pumpkin Train. A favorite competitive activity at the farm is rubber duck racing. Put your muscles to work pumping water the old-fashioned way — from brightly colored hand pumps, sending little rubber ducks racing down narrow troughs on a stream of water. The laughter is contagious while cheering little bobbing ducks! On the weekends there's live music on the Silo Stage. Go for the day and come back again at night to explore the corn maze by flashlight! Fresh air and fun can make you hungry, but there's lots to eat at the Barnyard Grill. Choose from burgers, hot dogs and fries or bakery goodies, Kettle Corn or homemade apple cider donuts.

Lapis and Tiger-Eye and Beryl … Oh my! Know where you can find these and 50 other types of polished stones? At Earthly Elements in Downtown Frederick. According to its owner, it is the only rock shop in the entire State of Maryland. It is simply a rock lover’s paradise and a “gem” in Frederick. But as the tagline “More Than a Rock Shop!” indicates, this store is so much more than just rocks.
Owner Richard Bailey has a degree in geology and has been interested in rocks since childhood. On a recent visit to his shop with my 8-year-old son, I found that Bailey’s passion for all things rocks shined through. He keeps a small box in the store containing his first rock treasures discovered on a family trip when he was only 7 years old. When you walk into Earthly Elements, you will be amazed at the huge selection of mineral specimens, crystals, fossils, and gemstone beads. Native American and gemstone jewelry, decorative stone items, metaphysical stones, handcrafted soaps, decorative wood boxes, hot/cold therapy packs, Adirondack cabin décor and clever wood signs also abound. (One of my favorite signs offered for sale: “We Interrupt This Marriage For Football Season.”) If you can’t find the specific rock you’re looking for, just let Bailey know. He will be sure to find it for you. He welcomes the challenge and is darn good at it. I personally could spend hours in this place. Geology was my favorite science in college, and as a former jewelry designer, I have a passion for all things rocks. There’s just something about the natural beauty that rocks have to offer.

My son was in awe of the huge geodes. A gorgeous, sparkling purple Brazilian Amethyst geode sits on display in the front of the store, looking like a fisherman’s catch of a great white shark with its mouth wide open. As you walk through the store and enjoy all of the gorgeous colors and textures on display, you’ll find an impressive dinosaur fossil room. This room contains fossils big and small of all varieties, such as a Parasaurolophus dinosaur egg and an 80-million-year-old set of Hadrosaur eggs. Bailey also offers in-store geology talks to anyone who is interested, including groups such as scouts, home-school groups, or even an informal group of parents and kids. He is all about education. “When I can spark some interest in the earth sciences with kids of all ages I feel I have done a good job,” he said. “While talking about geology, I can sneak in chemistry, physics and math and it doesn't even hurt. The kids think it’s just about rocks and minerals. For many kids, my shop may become their favorite shop. From time to time I even hear that the rock shop is better than Toys R Us! Now that’s the best compliment I can think of! “Parents and grandparents are always happy that kids become enthusiastic about something that isn’t an electronic game. The rock shop is a great place for kids to find that unique birthday party gift that will be remembered.” Bailey happily shared with me that his store has been selected as a full-time craft vendor at the Maryland Renaissance Festival. The store at the festival will be named Mystical Crystals.

Starting in early November, signs of the magical holiday experience of Downtown Frederick begin showing up in the form of twinkling lights. But it’s not until the world emerges from its turkey-induced slumber on the day after Thanksgiving — known around Frederick as “Frosty Friday” — that the city’s true holiday spirit begins to shine.
“There is something magical about experiencing Downtown Frederick’s 50-block historic district during the holidays,” says Michelle Kershner, former marketing and communication manager at The Tourism Council of Frederick County. “Streets are bustling with activity and many holiday events showcase Frederick’s rich German heritage, such as the Kris Kringle Procession.” The procession, not to be missed, features children dressed as snowflakes, wrapped presents, reindeer, and other holiday themed creatures, parading down Patrick and Market streets, joined by traditional and modern holiday characters, such as The Grinch, Frosty the Snowman, and Kris Kringle himself. The procession is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 12, at the corner of South Carroll and West Patrick streets, and ends at Baker Park with the lighting of the city’s Christmas tree. But Frosty Friday officially kicks off the region’s activity-packed holiday season on Nov. 28. Restaurants open earlier than usual, and offer breakfast fare not usually on menus, so shoppers can get an early start. They also stay open late with happy hours and drink specials for adult patrons through the evening. In between breakfast and happy hour, visitors may find themselves bumping into Santa or Scrooge, enjoying cups of complimentary cocoa, or joining a horse-drawn carriage ride tour through the city streets. “One of the highlights of the shopping season is Frosty Friday,” agrees Whitney Bingham, owner of The Muse, a marketplace for handcrafted jewelry, décor, and gifts at 9 N. Market St. “Customers often appreciate the contrast of Downtown

ViSiT iT! For a lot of kids, the countdown to next Christmas starts on December 26. Anticipation for the holiday season can be almost too much to take.
Luckily for families in the Frederick region, holiday festivities start nice and early. Soon after the Halloween costumes get packed away, families driving up Market Street will notice workers beginning to install the city’s famous strings of white lights on the trees above. One of your first chances to spot Santa is onstage during Way Off Broadway Children’s Theatre’s original stage adaptation of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.” During the show, a little boy named Charlie learns all about the magic of Christmas from Santa Claus himself. Performances are scheduled every Saturday afternoon beginning Nov. 22 through Dec. 27. Sunday performances are set for Nov. 23 and Dec. 14. On the day after Thanksgiving, Downtown Frederick’s Frosty Friday welcomes kids of all ages to start shopping for their holiday gifts in unique shops, instead of in bog box stores. Free hot chocolate and candy canes abound. The Grinch, Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman and other festive characters roam the streets alongside carolers to add to the holiday mood. Later that day, Santa is scheduled to make his official arrival among the festively decorated shops and restaurants of Everedy Square and Shab Row. Entertainment and activities will be available for kids all day long, but just before 7 p.m., make sure you claim your spot along East Street, between 2nd and Patrick streets. That’s when Santa Claus will make an appearance in a horse-drawn carriage along a short parade route. He’ll visit with each child, and parents are welcome to take photos while elves dole out carols and refreshments. Another Santa-spotting opportunity is available beginning Nov. 29, when the Walkersville Southern Railroad Santa Train pulls into town. The experience is like few others and is heartily recommended for young children especially. First, be sure to reserve tickets well in advance. Then, help the kids work on their wish lists for Santa. Next, get everyone bundled up in layers and hop on board to begin your excursion. The train runs at a leisurely pace south from Walkersville through Community Park and past Fountain Rock Nature Center. The ride continues through the woods and into picturesque farm country, where you can see the Catoctin

Santa spotting continues with a trip to the historic Weinberg Center for the Arts on Patrick Street in Frederick Nov. 29 for the annual “Merry Tuba Christmas” event. An afternoon of holiday fun includes regional tuba and euphonium players performing four-part Christmas carols. Following the performance, Santa and Mrs. Claus show up for the Weinberg’s Winterfest celebration. The best part? Admission is free, with a canned food donation or cash donation for the local food bank. One more unique holiday-themed experience in the region starts Nov. 29 and continues through December 28 at the Maryland Ensemble Theatre’s Fun Company. The children’s theatre group presents “Junie B. Jones in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells!” a raucous holiday adventure with the Junie, the popular firstgrade star of a number of children’s books. All of the students in Room One are happily planning the perfect holiday party except Junie B., who drew the name of her arch nemesis for the Secret Santa gift exchange.
