I can only speak for myself, but did this summer fly or what? A quick blink and we’ve gone from hot summer nights to cool, misty mornings. I’m not complaining. I love autumn, I just wasn’t expecting it quite so soon. But, that means it’s time to don those cozy sweaters, plan crock pot meals, and get ready to enjoy the upcoming holiday season! Visitors to Frederick County, as well as residents, are always treated to magical mountain vistas, a plethora of festivals and special events, as well as great theater and award-winning restaurants. But, during the holiday season, it all gets kicked up a notch or two. While we all debate the “Time is Speeding Up” phenomenon, and “hectic” becomes the word of the day...let’s not forget to steal a little extra time to enjoy each moment with those for whom we care most.

Okay, now that you know what taking Afternoon Tea consists of, let’s put our pinky fingers up in the air and get down to it. First stop is Cafe Anglais , on North Market Street in Downtown Frederick. My husband and I went together for a day date, and because we hadn’t gone for Afternoon Tea before, we committed the ultimate faux pas by just sort of showing up and asking for an Afternoon Tea. We were lucky that they weren’t busy and they were able to take us, the owner was most gracious. They only serve British tea, as they are an English cafe, and they brought us the fanciest pot of tea with cream and sugar. I seriously drank like 10 cups, it was so good! My husband, who I have never actually seen drink tea before, had multiple cups as well. They brought us scones, which were absolutely delicious with clotted cream and jam. (We ate an embarrassing amount of the clotted cream, they even brought us more!) Typically, they have little sandwiches already prepared for you and your party when you arrive, but since we didn’t forewarn them of our arrival, we had to wait for our little cucumber and cream cheese, chicken salad, and tomato salad sandwiches. (The tomato salad was actually a little improv sandwich by the owner, he said he usually does egg-salad. Nevertheless, we nightshade-avoiders absolutely loved these things!) Then the little desserts: a lovely selection of British snacks like Joffa cakes and Flapjacks accompanied by miniature eclairs and little lemon tarts. Afterward, we toured their garden in the back, and it is so cozy! After about 4 hours, I think you’d forget that you were right on Market Street.

Second stop is
Blue Dreams USA near
Linganore High School on Old Annapolis Road. We stopped by on a Saturday, unfortunately, since we (again!) broke the cardinal rule of reservations, we were unable to have an Afternoon Tea, but the owners were overjoyed that we were there. They have a gorgeous gift shop that is stuffed to the brim with hand blown glass, custom teapots, adorable little matching cups and greeting cards! Everything your eye can see, the owner, Imelda, designed and has a friend that makes it for her. We saw their property, where they grow tea and a number of fruit-bearing plants like apple, pear, and peach trees and tomato plants and rows and rows of herbs. This property is like a painting– everything is perfectly in its place. We sampled some tea on their veranda: lavender tea and a blend they call “Nutty” which is a tropical fruit blend with coconut; both were highly enjoyable, we couldn’t believe they grew everything on the property itself.

Third stop is Sweet Simplici-Tea in Sykesville. We finally remembered to make reservations before we trekked all the way there. My mother and I walked in and were greeted by the smell of freshly baked cookies and cakes, as they are also a bakery; like they had cloned the quintessential “Grammy’s house” smell. The inside has charmingly mismatched decor with a mixture of wooden and ceramic tables, vintage dresses, hat boxes and adorable knick-knacks on the walls: it really feels like you’ve been invited to a whimsical tea party. They have a large selection of teas — from black to green to oolong to white blends; we decided to try their house blend and their “Royal Wedding” blend which were both superb. They use plain white teapots with adorable little pot warmers, like a blanket for your tea! My mother and I got four delicious courses; a salad, a cinnamon raisin scone (of course with clotted cream and jam), three tea sandwiches, with our elusive egg salad sandwich, and desserts with a chocolate truffle that knocked my socks off. We had an exceptional afternoon basically goofing off together in the back of the teashop. The staff were incredibly friendly and we chatted for a long time, in true Afternoon Tea fashion. 23
SAVOR
The fourth and final stop is Serenity Tearoom
& Fine Dining on Patrick Street in Frederick. My experience there was a large party for a Bridal
Shower, so obviously, we had made a reservation for that. Everyone got to choose their own tea flavor from their expansive tea selection (some blends have chocolate in them...just saying) and scone flavor, as they have a scone of the month in addition to their traditional English Raisin. They also make a variety of season jams and curds. When the group was told that one of the seasonal curd flavors available that day was passionfruit, I have never heard so many ladies say, “Yum,” in unison. They had savories and sweets, all of which were delicious and adorably presented. They even made chocolate covered strawberries to match the wedding colors–so adorable! So, what are your plans this weekend? I suggest making a reservation for a relaxing Afternoon Tea at any one of these quirky, unique, yet traditional tearooms. Word of caution: this experience is extremely habit-forming and you may find yourself needing a spot of Afternoon Tea as often as humanly possible. Words by Hailey Ploski-Sarno 24

Tucked into the back of a small shopping center, down at the end of Frederick’s “Golden Mile,” is a new restaurant, packed with character and tons of authentic Mexican flavor.
Taco Bar opened a location in Frederick in June – its second restaurant – following 15 years of success in Gaithersburg. 30

The family-owned business serves delicious fast food similar to what you’d get from street vendors in Mexico City, where the owners once lived. Tacos come heaping with piles of meat and two corn tortillas, to contain the deliciousness. Choose from beef, steak, beef tongue, chicken, chorizo, or our favorite, pastor – pork with chunks of pineapple. A small bar offers a variety of spicy or mild salsas, limes, cilantro and other good stuff to pile on top. Or try one of their massive sandwiches, or tortas. The Especial comes with sliced ham, hot dogs, chicken and cheese, and is topped with fresh tomatoes, avocados, and onion! No matter what you order, you’ll get a tasty feast for a great price.

RAGIN’ 46
EATS
We recently ventured out on a Sunday morning hoping to break free from our usual brunch rut. Arriving as the first diners of the day, the staff at Ragin’ Reef jumped into action and we were not disappointed. Sweet/savory hushpuppies, Lobster dripped in queso, a heaping bowl of Jambalaya, with a side of eclectic classic rock on the sound system made this a meal we won’t soon forget! While Ragin’ Reef is considered a casual seafood restaurant, the decor is slightly elevated from the typical crab shack type decor. The food is fresh and chef prepared with a creative spin. A full bar with a nice selection of crafts beer make this newest seafood addition to the Frederick food scene a must try. raginreef.com 506 East Church St., Frederick 240.815.5438

VISIT
O
ne of the highlights at Christmastime for many residents in Frederick is the annual Candlelight House
Tour sponsored by Celebrate Frederick. This self-guided, ticketed event allows visitors an inside peek at several private homes that have been elaborately adorned with holiday décor while tour guides provide special insights into the unique architecture, decorations and history of these beautiful residences. My wife and I have served as one of these tour guides at various houses in town over the past several years. Last year, we had the pleasure of volunteering at the home of Michael Smith and Brian Ward. The Baker Park area home was finely decorated with a modern chic style by the homeowners in collaboration with Steve Corbeille and his team at Yardstick Interiors. Unlike some homes you will see from time to time on the tours, all of the decorations belonged to Michael and Brian and not just loaned to them for the weekend. The highlight for many guests was their Bubble Gum Tree located in the Family Room. The tree featured colorful pastel hand-blown glass bulbs by designer Jim Marvin. Marvin has decorated the White House for Christmas the past 20 years. The three stockings on the fireplace (one for Brian, one for Michael, and one for their dog Shadow) were hand-sewn by Melanie Hansen, the designer from Yardstick Interiors that consulted with them

leading up to the tour. Melanie also made the matching tree skirt. Melanie was also responsible for putting the gingerbread houses together that served as a centerpiece for the dining table in the breakfast nook as well as the double magnolia wreath that hung over the kitchen island.

Many
of the decorations have special meaning to Michael and Brian. For example, solid wood statues of the Three Wisemen were purchased approximately 30 years by Michael when he first ventured out on his own. A couple of Santas were also given to him by his mother because of his love for Christmas. In addition, Michael loves angels and they can be found scattered throughout the house. The house was nicely appointed with live floral arrangements, including over 50 live poinsettias that they purchased at Costco. They also featured the traditional garland and other greenery throughout the home. The Christmas decorations fit in very well with the furniture, art, and other pieces that remain in the home year-round. For example, I had to ask if a couple of their light fixtures were permanent or seasonal. They were indeed permanent but amazingly looked like they were installed to accent the holiday themes being conveyed. Decorations weren’t limited to the inside of the home. The exterior featured two life-size Nutcrackers that greeted guests from the front porch. These five feet tall toy soldiers, which came from Frontgate, have LED lights, play music, and are animated. This years line-up includes 8 beautifully appointed homes, all festooned with gorgeous holiday decor. The ambiance creates a wonderfully festive experience. Even standing in line with fellow visitors while waiting to enter each home is a delightful experience. Spirits are light and hearts are warm. During the event, the William R. Talley Recreation Center will serve as the Hospitality Center. Equally as charming as many of the homes on the tour, this is where you can grab a snack and some hot cocoa or cider. The Talley Center will also be home to the Holiday Shoppe where you can purchase ornaments and limited edition prints.
