A DAY TRIP GUIDE TO SHEPHERDSTOWN, WEST VIRGINIA
Fall has always been my favorite season. I got married in fall, some of my favorite people were born in fall, and the temperatures start to fall… in fall. Here in the Mid-Atlantic, where the trees put on an amazing, colorful show each year, bursting with reds, yellows and oranges. It’s hard not to love this time of year. Apple-picking and pumpkin carving lead to some of the most fun holidays of the year — the candy-hunting of Halloween, and the togetherness of Thanksgiving. And let’s not forget the December holidays, where a spirit of light and giving takes over and makes everything feel even more magical. Frederick certainly shines this time of year, especially. There is a neverending list of great events to attend and fantastic places to shop all throughout the county. Looking for a fright? Take in a downtown Frederick ghost tour in October (story on Page 20). In November, grab the the family and make a short, but delightful, road trip to Shepherdstown, West Virginia, home to hiking trails, live music, great food, and cool shopping (check out the details on Page 76). And in December, when you’ve given out all of your holiday cookies and forgot to save some for yourself, call The Cookie Crumbles for a latenight treat delivery (find out more on Page 54). Enjoy autumn and all its delights that you can find, all around Frederick!

Typewriter Poetry In the age of laptops, tablets and smartphones, Virginia Tech alums Jeff Stanford and Mark Petersen still find happiness in simplicity. Attend a Frederick-area event and you may see one or both poets behind an old-fashioned typewriter, offering verses typed on the spot. Give them any topic, and within a few minutes a personalized poem will be produced.
Photographs by Molly Fellin Spence
“It’s fun seeing the topics people come up with,” Stanford said. “It’s wonderful having the chance to engage with people and create something that’s memorable for them.” It all started about four years ago when Petersen was gifted a typewriter by his parents. Soon after, Stanford acquired one and brought it to college where the two engineering majors began to explore the art of typewriter poetry. In late 2016, the two began offering typewritten poetry at a farmers’ market in Ellicott City — Stanford’s hometown — and started spreading the word about their services.
“It’s a wonderful way to make connections with people,” Stanford said. “People love getting poems.” Often, Stanford says clients will ask him how he read their minds. “We’ll get people laughing or crying, then giving us a hug afterwards,” he said. Writing and engineering may seem like they’re on opposite ends of a spectrum, but for these typewriter poets, it’s perfectly logical. “I like mechanical things and I like writing,” explained Stanford. “There’s something about using a typewriter — having to think about what I’m saying, knowing I can’t erase it. It’s a form of communication that’s more tactile and real.”

GHOSTLY
ENCOUNTERS: Are you
a believer? Stories of ghostly encounters are not limited to dark evenings in October, or even to evenings, for that matter. Purveyors of the paranormal often speak of hauntings and other such phenomena taking place at all times of day, all throughout the year. (After all, one might ask, if people are unpredictable and random in life, would it not stand to reason that they would be the same after death as apparitions?)

All that being said, it is probably a safe wager that for many of those with interest in the otherworldly, (or in this case perhaps the underworldly?), ghost stories are most at home, most effective, and of course scariest when the set amongst the chilly, dark, somewhat damp days of fall — specifically around Halloween. Ghost Tours of Historic Frederick operates from April until December, offering patrons a 90-minute, 1 mile walking tour of several downtown locations known for years by locals as haunted (the Weinberg Center for the Arts, the Tyler Spite House, the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, among others.) The company gives a steady stream of tours in the evenings of that nine-month period, but as you might expect, it is October that finds the tour guides at their absolute busiest. I talked to Ron Angleberger, founder of the company as well as one of its tour guides. This year marks his 20th for giving the ghost tours downtown, having expanded the season and the offerings during that time. He loves giving tours any time of year, but says he especially relishes giving tours in October. “It’s one of my favorite times of the year,” he said, adding that to believe in Halloween, and in the Photography by Inset Photo: isotickphoto.com/ inhauscreative
unexplained presence of ghosts, is a key to being a successful tour guide. “People know if you are a believer.” Angleberger is, indeed, a believer, as are the many people with whom who speaks on a regular basis connected to the various sites on the tour. As hotbeds of strange activity within “Maryland’s Most Haunted City,” the stops on the tour are home

to various experiences and hauntings. Owners and proprietors often share with Angleberger any new spooky sightings that take place. The chills are always changing, in other words. It is, of course, up to each individual to determine if he is a believer in the spirit world. But the stories on the tour are not whole cloth fabrications; they consist of both longstanding traditions as well as recent developments, all based on real experiences of those with whom Angleberger speaks. He credits that level of authenticity for the uniqueness of his downtown tour. “When you combine both history, as well as, great storytelling, you are going to reach out and touch everyone in your group,” he said. A patron sees the buildings, the windows, the alleys and the streets on the tour, of course, but he also sees period-authentic costumes and accessories worn and used by every tour guide, and hears the impassioned storytelling of same. Once in a while, it’s true, some have claimed to see actual ghosts during the tour. At the least, all of the patrons that take this tour do learn about Frederick’s phantoms. But what patrons do not see, what nobody sees, are the private preparations on the part of the tour guides. Far from seeing the job as mere Inset Photo: isotickphoto.com/ Georgethefourth
entertainment, plenty of the believers working for Ghost Tours of Historic Frederick carry special kinds of protection within their period, wellresearched costumes. According to Angleberger, most of the guides employ crosses, bells, bones, potions and other assorted talismans to keep, shall we say, the “non-living” at a comfortable distance during the tours.

The seriousness with which Angleberger and the rest of these “docents of the dead,” take their work should not be misconstrued as eschewing fun and excitement. That, along with some scares, is the point of the experience. In fact being scared is fun, so long as it’s safe. I’ve actually wondered about that dichotomy — why is it that so many people enjoy the experience of being frightened (at least for a minute)? What draws humans to the eerie and the macabre aspects of our history? Angleberger shared his assessment with me. “In today’s stressful, and sometimes, chaotic world, people need escapism, a period of time to forget, and simply enjoy the moment,” he said. “For us, we present them a ‘moment in time’ from the past, and how that historic event resonates today.” Are we the ghosts of future decades? Might I, or you, or any of the tour guides working for Maryland Ghost Tours one day become part of the tour itself, as a haunting? I don’t claim to have the answer. But if it were to happen, I suspect Ron Angleberger and the other tour guides would approve.

“Every time I step foot into one of our shops, it is amazing the expertise and understanding all the shop owners have of all the merchandise,” she says. “You don’t get that kind of experience or conversation online.”
Whitney Dahlberg used to dread Black Friday when she worked as a manager at two large retailers. Now, as owner of The Muse in Downtown Frederick, she loves Frosty Friday, a rebranded version of the day after Thanksgiving that celebrates the opening of the holiday shopping season in Frederick. “The whole attitude is different,” Dahlberg said. “It is family. It is holiday spirit. It is happiness. It is not people running over top of each other to get a discount.” Online shopping may provide quick, easy results and big-box stores may offer low prices, but Frederick-area shop owners and officials in the know agree that buying locally is the best way to spend your money this holiday season. “Our downtown retailers know their stuff,” says Kara Norman, executive director of the Downtown Frederick Partnership. “When you go into a downtown store, often times you are interacting with the owner of that business and they are very knowledgable about the products that they have within their store. Another really great thing is their inventory is very curated. You are not being shown absolutely everything in the world, but you are getting a curated list of what they consider to be the best products. It really is a great chance for someone to do the hard work for you, and you get to see just the good stuff.” Frederick County Office of Economic Development director Helen Propheter agrees that Frederick County has unique merchants offering a diversity of gift ideas. She notes the customer service is also outstanding. “Every time I step foot into one of our shops, it is amazing the expertise and understanding all the shop owners have of all the merchandise,” she says. “You don’t get that kind of experience or conversation online.” Money spent locally also stays in the local economy.

that money typically doesn’t recirculate at all in our local community,” Norman says. When you buy local, the money comes back.
Shopping local is also “greener,” since you can shop at a majority of stores by foot over an afternoon. “[Walking around Downtown Frederick is] a great experience for you as a shopper and a great way to take care of the environment at the same time,” Norman says. Downtown Frederick offers a number of holiday activities in November and December, including the Candlelight House Tour, Museums by Candlelight and Kris Kringle Procession. There are also a number of can’t-miss holiday activities in other parts of Frederick County, including the Walkersville Southern Railroad’s Santa trains and tree lightings in multiple municipalities. “I enjoy the process of getting the gifts as much as I enjoy the process of giving the gifts,” Norman says. “I like that (process) to be enjoyable. The wonderful thing about Downtown Frederick is you have beautiful historic streets and really great architecture. You are in a really pleasant environment. The displays in the stores and the lights in the trees really gets you in the spirit of the holidays.” Downtown Frederick offers free weekend parking at meters and in parking decks between Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. “If you are thinking about parking as a possible negative,

it shouldn’t be at the holidays because they’ve either eliminated it or discounted it for your shopping needs,” Propheter added. Relish Décor owner Hallie Burrier is excited about several items her Downtown Frederick store will feature this holiday season. Burrier will be showcasing more earth-friendly sustainable products including ones to replace plastic cling wrap, paper towels and sponges, virtually eliminating waste in the kitchen. “These are excellent gifts and stocking stuffers as well as must haves for anyone entertaining this holiday season,” Burrier said. The store will also offer infusion kits that allow you to infuse your own liquor with a variety of flavors to make creative cocktails for guests. “We offer a wide assortment of gifts that are fun, unique and, most importantly, usable,” Burrier says. Every item in Dahlberg’s store is handmade by local and regional artists. “Everything is one-of-a-kind,” she says. “There are some things that an artist might make more than one of, but it is still one-of-a-kind because it came from their hands. I pride myself in finding things that you won’t find anywhere else.” Handmade ornaments are some of the bestsellers d u r i n g t h e h o l i d ay s e a s o n at T h e M u s e . Accessories such as scarves made by Frederick artist Margaret Hluch, who uses plants from her own garden as dyes, are some of the one-of-akind items that often sell out during the holiday shopping season at The Muse. “Frederick, in general, has so many unique boutiques and stores and restaurants and it is such a magical place during the holidays, with all the lights,” Dahlberg says. “I always encourage my customers all year round, if they are from out of town, that they make sure to come back and visit during the holidays because it really is that idealistic, special place at Christmas time.” 43

When our doorbell rang around 9:30 one recent evening, the kids and dog were alarmed, but I was not. Because I knew on the other side of the door there would be something warm and delicious waiting for us. And I was right. Because I was the one who had the good sense to make an online order for every available flavor from The Cookie Crumbles, a new, late-night cookie delivery service in Frederick with the motto: “Big. Warm. Fresh. Delivered straight to your door.” Amina Mazhar, a recent college graduate, opened The Cookie Crumbles in August, as a way to keep herself busy while she job searches. An avid baker who grew up and still lives in Frederick, Mazhar modeled The Cookie Crumbles after similar cookie delivery services, such as Insomnia Cookies. She says her goal is “to satisfy anyone’s late-night sugar cravings” by offering giant, soft cookies in flavors such as “Thicc and Doughy Chocolate Chip,” M&M, Funfetti and Toffee and Double Chocolate. The cookies are indeed giant, and arrive warm, soft and perfectly delicious. Each one is large enough to share among two or three people, though you may want to save the whole thing for yourself. Because there’s nothing quite like a sweet, warm treat (that someone else has baked for you)!

YOUR CHANCE TO
Frolic WITH
Felines By Gina Gallucci-White
A few years ago, Diane Foland was in bed reading a magazine article about the difference between free range and cage free eggs. The article started her down a path to being a vegetarian, later a vegan,

then led to her working with two animal rights organizations.

“I used to be a cheeseburger, bacon-loving lady myself,” she says. “I just find it important to educate people and help open their eyes ... but in a gentle way.” While working with one of the organizations, she was walking in Georgetown and saw Crumbs and Whiskers, a cat cafe where folks may order drinks and light fare while interacting with felines that are up for adoption in a cage-free environment. Foland came back later to check out the business and fell in love with the concept. “I thought, ‘This needs to come to Frederick.’” After an extensive search for a property, the Frederick resident plans to open the K.A.T. Cafe at 26 W. Main St. in New Market this fall. About 15 cats that are up for adoption from Frederick County Animal Control will be onsite at any time. There is a $15 rate to attend the café for an hour and 10 minute session, similar to what many cafés

There will be a reservation system available to book a spot. Children must be supervised by an adult and a signed waiver is required for them to participate. “(The cafe) is supposed to be a less stressful environment for the kitties,” she says. “While walkins are welcome, we want to reduce the coming and going of people and so we will take 10 people at a time so the cats are not overwhelmed.” Frederick County Animal Control Director Linda Shea believes the idea of a cat café is a wonderful, progressive idea. Every year, the agency takes in about twice as many felines as any other species. “I think any avenue that is productive and positive and showcases shelter animals for adoption is a good thing,” Shea says. “... It is showcasing them in a different environment and hopefully allowing them to show their best feline self. It

The café will serve as a foster home for the cats on site. If someone is interested in adopting, they will need to go through Animal Control to be formerly approved. The intention is cat adoption and if while you are there considering adoption and you get hungry we have light vegan fare to offer you.” The cafe has partnered with Hippy Chick Hummus in Downtown Frederick to provide food. As of early summer, Foland was searching for a vendor to offer vegan dessert items as well. “I wanted to use this business as a platform to help educate people on the delicious food that can be enjoyed without the use of any animal products,” she says.

Whether you need a few minutes to chill out or you’re looking for a more rigorous yoga routine, Luna Yoga is an important space in the community that offers all of the above and more. In the building that was formerly Ananda Shala on South Market Street, in Downtown Frederick, a new era of yogis and yoginis has arrived. Cindy D’Aquino became owner in the spring and has worked to realize her vision for the studio, which included painting everything white. Regulars may also notice the kitchen has been transformed into a cozy gathering room with cushions and a rug, where everyone is welcome to wander in and just hang out and have a cup of coffee or tea. D’Aquino turned to yoga several years ago as a way to take care of herself, and while she worked the front desk of Ananda Shala for five years, she became more familiar with the practice while also studying kundalini. She’s bringing more kundalini classes to the space, as well as other spiritually based programs outside of yoga. “I really want to create a community and a gathering place for people to connect,” she said. “That’s actually the most important thing to me.”

A Day Trip Guide to Shepherdstown, W.Va. By Lauren LaRocca

Border Crossing
OVER THE EDGE Whether you’re looking for hiking trails, live music or a new place to do some holiday shopping, Shepherdstown, W.Va., checks all the boxes. This quaint college town just over the West Virginia border from Frederick has been drawing people to its main street, aka West German Street, for decades. It’s only become more enticing in recent years with the addition of new restaurants, boutiques and events — though people still stop in for the longtime staples, such as the Mecklenburg Inn, Lost Dog Cafe and Four Seasons Books, to name a few.
77
While some see it as a college town, with the Shepherd University campus situated in the center of town, it’s also known for being rich in history. Indeed, it’s one of the oldest towns in the state. One look around, and you’ll be struck by the centuries-old architecture of the downtown shops and eateries. When you visit, you’ll want to bring along a camera, a shopping bag and, perhaps, this magazine as a reference guide. Here are our picks for what not to miss when you want to make a day of it.
GET OUTSIDE There’s nothing like the crisp fall air to put you in the mood for a day spent outdoors, whether you’re doing something rigorous such as mountain biking or just walking or picnicking while enjoying nature. Whether you want to take a walk, hike or bike ride, or even try some water sports if the weather permits, Shepherdstown is perfect for all of the above. It’s in close proximity to several trails, as well as the C&O Canal along the Potomac River, where you can hike, bike, walk and even camp, if you’re in the mood to extend your day trip and the weather is nice. Some other options are Snavely Ford Trail at Antietam National Battlefield, just 5 miles down the pretty views, and often, there will be some wildlife along the way — deer, owls or even wild turkeys. Before you venture out, stop in Shepherdstown Pedal & Paddle on West German Street — or check in with them to find out if they’re offering any group bike rides. They sell and rent equipment for all kinds of outdoors adventures.

EAT As you may know, one of the greatest things about a good, long hike, is eating a good meal afterward, and Shepherdstown can provide that, too. Shepherdstown offers so much variety in the way of dining, you’ll have to make a few visits just to try all of its restaurants. On West German Street, Press Room is an upscale eatery that serves American food inside what was once a newspaper building. Bistro 112 is another favorite, serving French cuisine in a cozy, 1830s brick building. Domestic is a great choice, too, with its contemporary American fare in a cool, minimalistic space. You can’t go wrong with Blue Moon Café, which sits off the main drag only a block away. Vegetarians will love it for its large menu of vegetarian and vegan options, but carnivores will most likely leave satisfied, too, with dishes such as Jesse’s Meat Escondido and the Tarragon Chicken Salad. Their dishes are creative, the food is fresh and wholesome, and its laid-back atmosphere is a draw, too, especially the outdoor seating on a brick patio, where you can watch the passersby on warm fall days. And no one — absolutely no one — should leave town without a stop inside Shepherdstown Sweet Shop Bakery, whether it’s to grab a few cookies to too enticing — and delicious — to pass up.

go or a loaf of bread. Their fresh array of goodies is
GO SHOPPING One of the greatest indie bookstores around, Four Seasons Books, sits on West German Street, and it’s been known to rob people of countless hours of their time without them even realizing it. The selection is great, constantly updated with staff picks and new reads, and they host author events and workshops throughout the year. O’Hurley’s General Store is another longtime Shepherdstown favorite for country-store style shopping and antiques. The building itself is a treat to walk through, and you’ll most likely find some unique holiday gifts there. On the Wings of Dreams is another great option for gift-giving, with tables of crystals, books, jewelry and incense. Tonic Herb Shop & Elixir Bar is a fairly recent addition to downtown but has made a positive impact on the community — and the health of the community — through its creative teas and herbal remedies for sale, as well as educational workshops and classes by herbalists in the region. It always smells delicious inside. Grapes & Grains Gourmet is medicinal in another sense. The shop carries wines from all over the world. Need we say more? OK, then, they also carry hundreds of beer varieties. And cheese. Something for everyone!

NIGHTLIFE Normally, the historical Opera House is the go-to venue for all things entertainment — live music acts, film screenings, theater and staged readings, local performances. Unfortunately, it closed for renovations after flooding and has not reopened yet. Check its Facebook page (Opera House LIVE) for up-to-date progress. In the meantime, there are lots of other options. The Mecklenburg Inn, aka “The Meck,” has been a longstanding favorite for pub eats and live music. The pub is known for its low-key atmosphere and vintage aesthetic. The Town Run Tap House on East Washington Street also hosts live music, as do other restaurants and bars in town. Check in to see what their calendars offer — or wing it, and you could be pleasantly surprised to be serenaded over dinner.
INSTAGRAM WORTHY You’d also be remiss if you didn’t stop at the “Little House” along North Princess Street, just steps from West German. The Dutch Colonial-style house was created in the early 1900s as part of a play complex for Shepherd University and still stands today. You can peer inside to see its

’TIS THE SEASON Shepherdstown celebrates all seasons through various community-wide events, such as the Maypole festivities in the spring and, come fall, BooFest. The Vampire Ball (for adults) kicks off BooFest on Oct. 25, followed by two days of games for kids, costume contests, a haunted walk (for the adventurous) and a “Thriller” dance performance. New in 2018 was Witches Tea, which will continue this year with fortune tellers of all kinds, including palm and tarot readers. On Halloween, West German Street is closed down and opened to thousands — yes, thousands — of trick-or-treaters. The Christmas season is chock full of events, too, like Civil War Christmas and visits from Santa. All other photos courtesy of the West Virginia Tourism Office
Check the Shepherdstown Visitor Center for more details on holiday events.
