The season of change. I don’t know about you, but I feel like the so called lazy, hazy days of Summer rushed by in the blink of an eye. What? The leaves are changing already? Fall colors are starting to replace the bright yellow blossoms of the Black-Eyed Susan, and cool, crisp air is ushering out hot, humid temperatures to which Marylanders have grown accustomed. Change is just a part of life. Change is happening here at Pulse Publishing, too. Drum roll please...welcome to the new FiND iT Frederick! As we enter our 10th year...yes, I said 10th...we decided it was time to kick things up a notch. Our fresh new design, modern color palette, and custom coloring page will continue to focus on all the creative, interesting, and unusual aspects of Frederick County that make it so special. Living and/or working in Frederick County gives all of us an opportunity to live in what I’ll call an informal and unofficial four season resort...no one person owns it, and we all have the opportunity to enjoy it. Whether it be the ever changing

view of the Catoctin Mountains while traveling Route 15, the complex aromas that waft through downtown as the multitude of restaurants prep for the hungry masses, or a simple splash from the Monocacy or a downtown fountain; it’s always changing and it’s all good.

FUNKY AND FABULOUS After a brief hiatus, Frederick artist Kelly Roberts, is back in the sewing machine saddle with her kCity creations. kCity creates one-of-a-kind bags that make a statement. No two bags have the same fabric placement and each bag is designed and handmade with great attention to detail. Kelly believes fabric is art and a great piece of fabric will command the design. It’s all about the fabric and simple, classic shapes...not trends. These bags are for women who want to express themselves with one great accessory. kCity celebrates women and their individuality and they believe your bag should too!! So grab a funky fabric bag...or two.

A Man with a Vision  a Heart to Serve: By Daniel Ward

Sometimes a person’s passion can only be expressed fully through their own words. They tell their story best. Every nuance of every choice made during the creative process is a part of that story. It is in that spirit that we share the story of Daniel Ward’s Maryland Clothing Co.

18

19

The story behind Maryland Clothing Co.

Maryland is awesome. When it comes to pride,

starts somewhere between the desire to be

of the most important lessons I’ve learned are

to “honor those who have come before you

anything else we make. Maryland is a state filled

and to leave your seat better than you found

with rich history. We tried to incorporate as much

it.” I decided to apply those same principles

of that history into our designs as we could.

to MCC. I wanted to create a company that

wings, right? We love how much is “hidden” in this design. Together, the torso and tail create more than the letter M. It’s also a trident,

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN, YOU ASK? That diamond shape that encapsulates our name? It has meaning. It’s a direct pull from the diamond pattern that is a significant element in the Maryland state flag. The font was created specifically for us. While it definitely has an historic feel about it, there’s some whimsy there as well. Notice the subtle “flag-wave” curve and swoop the type creates from bottom left to top right? That’s our nod to the actual Star Spangled Banner flag, sewn by Mary Pickersgill in Baltimore and flown over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. Overall, this logo has a unique, artisanal, vintage personality. We like that because it represents both our rich heritage and the honest, hard-working character you’ll find all over our amazing state. All of the design elements featured on Maryland Clothing Co. products have meaning and were inspired by the great state of Maryland.

STARTING FROM THE TOP DOWN STATE HOOD NO 7 Maryland was the 7th state to ratify the constitution. The vertical rectangular shape with the point at the bottom is illustrated straight from the MD flag. TAGLINE MARK The diamond shape from the MD State flag is introduced here, the eagle brandmark is at the center, and highlighted the tagline around it. MCCO The company name as an acronym is introduced here within a crest shape, which was illustrated from the standard Maryland license plate. BRANDMARK EAGLE The eagle was chosen for several reasons starting with the Star Spangled Banner, the Nation’s anthem, written in Maryland, is a song about bravery, hope, triumph and freedom. All things synonymous with the Country’s national bird, the eagle. The eagle is a symbol of pride, strength, and freedom—Another nod to the Free State nickname. The eagle is also a nod to the vast military presence in Maryland. The Navy in particular, who outfits formal uniforms of numerous branches with unique department eagle insignia pins. The M has an additional meaning and was intentionally illustrated this way. A nostalgic nod to the U.S. Naval Academy, which calls the State’s capital home. The M is an inverted trident. You’ll find a trident atop the U.S. Naval Academy’s seal. MCCO Another pull form the MD flag with the pointed rectangular design. TAGLINE MARK A vintage tag plaque was created housing the tagline, State acronym, and seven stars representing the state hood. MONOGRAM Monogram within the State crest from the MD license plate. STATE HOOD 7 Completely inspired by the State hood seal customized to this brand, with a stitched outer border added.

22

We’re about more than simply selling Maryland

I also believe it’s important for MCC to give back to

apparel and accessories. Look, there’s no

A DESIGNING TRANSPLANT As a recent transplant from North Carolina, Lindsey Beaman followed a job offer that got her to Maryland. She fell in love with Downtown Frederick the very first time she visited and decided that our lively city with a hometown feel was exactly what she was looking for. Our walkable downtown, filled with restaurants and unique, locally owned shops, helped seal the deal to convince Lindsey that Frederick was her new home. As a fan of the unique and unusual, Lindsey wasn’t finding pieces in stores that inspired her, so she began making jewelry for herself because she just could not find exactly what she was looking for. As people started asking her where she found her necklaces, it became obvious that others might enjoy her designs. She began filling custom orders and then slowly started increasing production. She first began selling her collection in a boutique in Fayetteville, NC, close to her home town. After moving to Maryland, she set out to find to a boutique that aligned with the style of her collection. Silk & Burlap, became the first boutique in Maryland to sell her Adelena Ray Collection. A combination of her middle name (Adele), her sister’s first name (Elena) and her brother’s first name (Ray), Lindsey has created a beautiful and unique collection of accessories that honors her family as well as her own creative calling.

Know When to By Maxann Keller

28

I CAN REMEMBER MY FIRST DAY OF HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY PRACTICE LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY. With the sole intention to get in better shape for basketball and softball season, I showed up in my baggy T-shirt, kneelength shorts and sneakers, prepared to run a few miles, stretch out some loose muscles and then head home. Little did I know those “few miles” would actually total over five, accompanied by repetitive hills (all run at a very perky pace) and an evening of popping Advil while lying face down in the carpet. I was in no way a seasoned runner, and had anyone told me at that very first practice I’d become a serious, competitive marathon finisher by the time I hit college, I’d have laughed until my tears of pain were replaced with those of hilarious disbelief.

My friends and family thought I was crazy—many of them still think do—but the truth behind the matter is that since that day I grew to LOVE running. Running was never a part of my daily routine... until it was. Since that fateful day I decided to give it that one shot, I’ve been a runner ever since. While many may think the new year resolution bandwagon is the best place to toe-up to the starting line and commit to more running, Fall is actually the perfect time to lace up your sneakers. Not only is the weather cooling down, encouraging more time outside, but the list of runs and races that are fun and worth their weight in SWAG arrive for optimal motivation! Fall in love with running this Autumn with these few helpful tips that just may keep you on your toes!

FIND A BUDDY SYSTEM It’s happened to me all too many times—the alarm goes off at 5:30am before the sun rises and the only lights to guide the way are the stars and their light reflecting off of my Asics. More times than not, I want to tap-out and sleep in one more hour before getting ready for the day. But when I know there’s someone else struggling through these wee hours of the morning with me and out to tackle the same goal of a few miles before sunrise, I’m out the door on time and ready to run! It’s no secret that having a buddy to hold you accountable for your workouts, training, and race-day participation will improve the likelihood you’ll stick with a running plan. It not only makes the sport that much more enjoyable, but also allows for lasting relationships to be formed with like-minded, crazy 5am runners—like yourself! Luckily for us Fredericktonians, there are a few groups that help herd these striders together.Check out The Frederick Steeplechaser’s Running Club and The Monocacy Running Club, both of whom have Facebooks and websites that allow for members to join and/or contact leaders to find more information about hopping onboard.

FIND YOUR RACE Autumn is the PERFECT time to slip into those sneakers and start up a running goal for your first (or 71st) 5k! Despite temperatures cooling down and an abundance of fun winter holidays just around the corner, themed races and SWAG runs are heating up the running scene from September through December making this the best time to commit to a new goal and stick to a running plan! With your new running buddies (or familiar friends), check out local races offer fun before, during, and after the event. For some, their runs require a little distraction. The Great Pumpkin run is a great example of a race even the least-excited runner would

31

enjoy. It’s held at Crumland Farms right here on the outskirts of Frederick and invites runners of all skill levels to journey through the course of cornstalks and pumpkin patches- costumes encouraged! Runners get to take home a pumpkin, a commemorative jacket, and a medal that you’ll most likely hang in your office until Christmas eve just to relive the fun of your run. Another great tradition is the Frederick Turkey Trot, a Thanksgiving morning 5k that gives everyone a chance to venture through downtown Frederick, see friends, dress up in costume, and burn off calories just before you sit down to consume them. Whatever entices you most to sprint into the finish line, there’s bound to be a race that has it and is sure to get YOUR blood pumpin’ and endorphins racing.

REMEMBER! WHAT YOU PUT IN YOUR BODY WILL DECIDE WHAT YOU GET OUT OF IT. I’m not talking diets, juice cleanses, or restrictive menus. I’m talking about feeding your body with that it needs and with AS MUCH as it needs. Learning quickly that a few slices of bread with butter at dinner left me feeling lethargic and my motivation less than minuscule, I now make a conscious note to leave the heavy carbs and toppings behind for a time when I am not gearing up for a good, strong run thereafter. Focus on what your body needs and when it is appropriate to consume it. Coming from a runner who has ice cream every night, trust me when I say there’s no need to stick to fruits and veggies only. But be sure that you listen to your body and what it needs to bring out the best in your exercise. If you feel great after eating a salad with your favorite protein on top, buy the ingredients and make it a daily staple at home... or maybe your body craves a sandwich with french bread, pickles, and tuna salad with a piece of dark chocolate to finish off the meal.

32

Experiment with your favorite foods and make it fun. Try new, flavorful yet healthy foods, like whole grain quinoa or one of the tasty smoothies and fresh pressed juices from local cafe Good JuJu. Learning how to fuel your body rather than fill your tummy may seem like a challenge, but it’s a sure fire way to end up craving what you need, rather than that fried chicken with biscuits and gravy you may think that you want.

AND OF COURSE— ENJOY YOURSELF! Running is as fun as you make it. If you enter the ring with the sole intention to lose weight yet you can only spend your 30 minute jog thinking about how you wish you were already finished resulting in 30 minutes of self-induced agony, you won’t stick with it long enough to shed a single pound. If adding rewards to the end of your runs gets you fueled up, don’t be afraid to work for that coveted coffee date with your best friend, an extra five minutes to listen to your favorite tunes on your drive to work, or an hour for that highly anticipated weekend bubble bath. If you enjoy running to music, build yourself a unique playlist that speaks to your inner athlete! If stopping every mile to stretch or celebrating a hill with a short walk is what makes the venture a sweet, sweet victory—DO IT! This is your time to enjoy your new sport and all the good it is doing for your body. The sure fire way to become a runner has nothing to do with the fancy spandex clothes or the shape of your body when you start, but rather, the attitude you take towards this exciting new step towards becoming a runner! Let it be known- you do not have to log 100 miles a week, nor do your miles need to be clocked below seven minutes each to be coined “a runner”. A runner is, by definition, someone who is quite simply- out and running. Whether your goal is to get into shape, find a new exercise routine, or fill your calendar with a few new adventures, now more than ever is the best time to start your running journey!

A PASSION

MS CAITLINS SCHOOL OF BLACKSMITHING

CAITLIN MORRIS WILLINGLY ADMITS SHE HANGS OUT WITH THE MISFITS AND SCALLYWAGS. She proudly sings loudly and out of tune. She claims to be partial to walks in the rain, but the most important thing about Caitlin is...Caitlin loves blacksmithing.

43

44

Having never seen a blacksmithing demonstration, Caitlin’s various travels had her admiring all things metal: wrought iron gates, door hardware, signs, and grilles. In September of 2009, Caitlin took her first blacksmithing class at John C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. Signing up for her next class before having finished the first, she had fallen head-over-heels in love with the craft. She is now the creator of various delights in metals such as lights, sign brackets, grills, garden trellises, sculptures, dragons, and plant hangers, the likes of which others now admire. Fast forward through five plus years of schooling, practice, and working with other blacksmiths when in 2015, Caitlin (Ms Caitlin...if you’re nasty... or her student) started her own business with a focus on iron-work and teaching blacksmithing full-time. This Vermont native runs Ms Caitlin’s School in Maryland, which is dedicated to sharing the craft with as many unsuspecting people as possible. She also teaches at several other schools up and down the East Coast. So who would the typical blacksmithing student be? It appears that just about anyone is fair game..men, women, young and old. One of the schools social media posts suggests that wielding tools and metal over a raging fire is the perfect way to celebrate ones anniversary! Seems treating your partner and yourself to a blacksmithing lesson in the perfect way to celebrate the 6th (iron), 11th (steel), 21st (fire), 26th (art), 29th (tools), and 33rd (iron, again) anniversary! Who knew? Offering classes at noon, 3PM, and 6PM Tuesday–Saturday at the school’s downtown Frederick location, interested and curious students can sign up online, and for a limited time, a friend can tag along for free! With a contagious enthusiasm for her craft, and a wicked sense of humor, PHOTO BY KEST SCHWARTZMAN

it’s clear that when you first put hammer to hot steel, you want Caitlin there to guide, mentor, and inspire you. She’s good at lighting fires.

to create calm The magnificent autumnal tones and sweater weather of Fall are what make this my favorite time of the year. My fall favorites list includes all things apple: apple cider, apple butter, apple dumplings, digging in the cool dirt of my garden, the way the setting sun makes things sparkle, and crafting. I love flexing my creative muscles as often as possible, but life doesn’t always allow time for one of my more involved hobbies such as working in stained glass or painting. Enter coloring. Yes...coloring in a coloring book! It’s an almost meditative process that I’ve been doing long before it was hip to do so. Fortunately, because adults have discovered the calming nature of coloring, there are a multitude of mature coloring book choices. I no longer need to stash my Winnie the Pooh pages! So it is with great excitement that we introduce our FiND iT coloring contest! Each issue we’ll partner with a Frederick business to create a one-of-a-kind coloring page. Each issue will give readers a chance to win great prizes with their old-school coloring skills! Grab your kid’s crayons, try colored pencils, or watercolor pencils, even markers...there are no rules. Just relax and enjoy the meditative and calming aspects of coloring—like a grownup.

TIPS AND TOOLS Even if the last time you picked up a crayon was in kindergarten, coloring is like riding a bike, just jump in and you’ll be soothing your inner-child in no time! The rules are few, but the possible tools and techniques are many. + Crayons + Colored Pencils + Watercolor Pencils + Gel Pens + Markers

50

+ Pastels + Inexpensive eye shadow (they have great blending properties)

If you want to start tr ying some advanced techniques, add a blending pencil to help soften and blend colored pencils. Use different pressures and change directions when coloring to create a variety of textures. If you have wrist issues such as carpal tunnel, etc. try starting with low bleed markers...they don’t blend as well but they’re easier on your wrist. Breathe, color, relax, repeat.

SING OUT LOUD FREDERICK CHILDREN’S CHORUS By Ty Unglebower

54

FOR EXACTLY ONE SEMESTER IN SEVENTH GRADE, I WAS IN A SCHOOL CHORUS. We formed in order to participate in a Christmas music festival held in Washington, D.C that year for private schools. We were a collection of pre-adolescent kids in uniforms crammed twice a week into what passed as a cafeteria on campus, “learning Christmas tunes with which we already quite familiar under the instruction of a nervous, obviously overworked music teacher. By the time it was all said and done, it was a somewhat fun experience for me, but not one I needed to repeat.

Our director, it seems, didn’t need to repeat it either; there was no further chorus activity in the spring. Too much stress and not enough joy, I suppose, for all of us. With the deepest respect for Mrs C., wherever she may be now, I’d probably have been more likely to participate in choral singing longer had I instead started off with the Frederick Children’s Chorus. It was up and running back then, after all; as it has been since 1985. That’s when it started out as a small operation with thirteen singers, founded by Judith DuBose. Since then, the group has evolved into a five-tiered choral organization with nearly 150 members, ranging in age from kindergarten through high school. Their varied, family-friendly repertoire has taken the chorus to perform in places such

Naturally, the quality of the vocals must be top notch to have built such a resume. Yet there’s more to this non-profit arts organization than just singing of songs. Instruction and experimentation in other aspects of performance separate

Vital, non-academic concepts such as developing confidence, and community outreach are also crucial aspects of the Frederick Children’s Chorus experience.
