and so it is said‌
This time last year, I had committed to trying something new. So I celebrated the end of the long, cold, snowy winter by running my first 5K race...The Cakes for Cause Cupcake Run, to be exact. I trained most of those previous winter months on my treadmill in the basement, and when it was time to hit the streets of Frederick, all I really cared about was getting to the finish line before they ran out of cupcakes. This year, although the Cupcake Run is a great cause, there is an easier way to get a cupcake. Liza Hawkins shares her delicious discoveries at three of the areas newest cupcakeries. Next on my list was a hot air balloon ride and Tailwinds Over Frederick took care of that! Amanda Rodriguez shares a bit about Tailwinds in this issue, and be sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and our website to catch a video of our high flyin' adventure. This issue is chock full of ideas and inspiration for ways to get out and explore all that the Frederick County area has to offer. From art to restaurants, and adventures to museums...Frederick has it all. So take a deep breath of that fresh spring air and go live life!

rangling snakes, lifting 50 lb. Alligator Sapping Turtles, and teasing the venom out of spiders would hardly seem the normal resume of a Certified Guerrilla Marketing Coach and co- owner of a video production company, but hey, it probably doesn't hurt. Having grown up literally in the middle of a zoo, she has first hand experience in dealing with wild things. Whitney Hahn, co-owner and business manager of Digital Bard, has appeared as a guest on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Animal Planet, and you've probably seen her every now and again on some local programs as well. Skillfully sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm with those around her is what sets Whitney apart in all that she does. With a degree in Communication from Towson University, Whitney started out as Marketing Director for the Catoctin Zoo, and working as a local radio DJ. That experience, joined with her partner, Arminta Finn's video production background, helped give wings to their successful business, Digital Bard. Video. Web. Marketing.

Once you meet this self-described "big picture person", you can't help but visualize that picture as big, bright, vibrant and most of all...possible.

SAVOR iT!
When you think “cupcakery,” what comes to mind? Georgetown Cupcakes, The Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” or maybe even our very own Frederick, MD?
It’s kind of cool what can transpire in the course of a year in Frederick. Buildings downtown get a facelift, Wegmans opens, and we get three new bakeries whose focuses all center around one very important thing: cupcakes. Cupcakes may be old news in other parts of the country, but in Frederick they’re the hottest thing since coffee shops. Three frontrunners shape our local view of what makes a good cupcake, and we spent time visiting each one to give you some background as to what makes them special—because, guess what? All three make super-delicious, extra-moist, can’t-get-enough cupcakes.

SAVOR iT!
Located a stone’s throw from Shab Row in a little white building on East Church Street, Angelcakes is a quaint bake shop making a name for itself. The inside is just as simple as the outside, with glass-covered pedestals showcasing the shop’s “Everyday” cupcakes, along with the “Just for the Day” cupcakes. If you’re a creature of habit, look for the pedestals to be stocked with flavors like Madagascar Vanilla, Scarlet Red Velvet, Black and White, Shaved Coconut and Chocolate Ganache Crème, as well as seasonal treats like this winter’s Chocolate Raspberry. However, stray a little from the norm, and you’ll find tempting flavor treats including Root Beer Float, Apple Strudel, Snicker Doodle, and another seasonal treat, Maple Pecan. The austere cupcakes are a pleasure, with just enough decoration to look formal but not over-the-top. Angelcakes’ not too sweet buttercream is light, almost like a whipped frosting, and it sits in a perfectly piped dollop atop the cake. Whether they’re baking cupcakes for a wedding, your kid’s next party, or simply a few cupcakes for your after work treat, it’s clear that Frederick loves Angelcakes— the shop’s treats were just voted “Best Dessert” in the February 2012 edition of Frederick Magazine. On the Sister’s Bake Shop website there’s a quote that states, “Building relationships that last a lifetime,” and if you spend just 10 minutes with JoAnn and Samantha you’ll find that quote to be more of a mantra than just a simple slogan on their website. Warm and inviting, the two are eager to please, and the thought they put into their cupcakes and their customers is evident. Rather than a standard set of cupcake flavors, Sisters Bake Shop rotates six to 15 flavors. JoAnn explains, “We keep it fresh, and we try not to be plain. We’ll have some seasonal flavors, but we like to focus more on what our customers want.” Favorite customer flavors include German Chocolate, Lemon Blueberry, Slippery Butterfinger and Salted Caramel. But, if there’s a flavor combo you’re interested in, chances are JoAnn and Samantha will be willing to try it out for your next event. In addition to selling cupcakes for birthdays, weddings, and other special occasions, Sister’s Bake Shop donates a lot of cupcakes back to the community. “Every Tuesday we give cupcakes to Heartly House,” says Samantha. “It really means a lot to them, and it’s the least we can do.”
32
SAVOR iT!
Sister’s Bake Shop also prides itself on keeping their flavors well-stocked. If Samantha or JoAnn notices they’re running low on a particular flavor, they’ll fire up the ovens and bake a few more batches in the afternoon. The leftovers from those late-day baking sessions are then donated to Frederick Memorial Hospital and local schools so that the cupcakes don’t go to waste. What’s next for Sister’s Bake Shop? Well, they just made it through the first round of tryouts for The Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” and they’re very excited for the potential challenge. Keep your fingers crossed—they’ll know by July if they make the show!
Then there is Sweet Angela’s. Angela opened her cupcakery on East Church Street in October 2011 after spending time selling her popular cupcakes at local farmers’ markets. Walk through Sweet Angela’s doors, and your senses will be stimulated— the aroma of fresh strawberries often wafts throughout the cupcakery, as well as the scents of vanilla and chocolate. Pink walls surround, along with dozens of other bright pink decorations and light pink accents.
33
SAVOR iT! Daily flavors include the classics like chocolate and vanilla, as well as customer favorite Sweet Lola (rich chocolate topped with cream cheese frosting). Angela’s focus is on cupcakes and only cupcakes, and she’ll be quick to remind you, “We’re the only true cupcakery in town!” It’s true, you won’t find any other baked goods on her shelves, but that doesn’t keep Angela and her family from being extremely busy and constantly thinking up new flavor combos. Specialty flavors include another customer favorite, Chocolate Peanut Butter, as well as Owen’s Oreo (cookies and cream), Sassy Sally’s Key Lime Supreme, PB and J, and Aunt T’s Carrot Top (carrot cake). Aside from in-store sales, Sweet Angela’s also focuses on weddings, where brides typically pick three flavor combos, and Angela gives them free reign to mix and match their favorites. She also has corporate clients and gives back to the community whenever she can, for example by donating leftover fresh cupcakes to local charities. Angela’s customers are happy, and they come back week after week, some traveling from as far as Pennsylvania to stock up on her cupcakes!

Sibu Sura Chocolates is a strong believer in having an ongoing relationship with its cacao bean farmers and overseeing the quality of their beans. Their chocolate is exquisite and the truffles, bars, and hand-decorated bars have an overall quality that compares to the finest European couverture (meaning chocolate with a higher cocoa butter content...which means more yummy-ness!). With an emphasis on the health attributes of chocolates, and while promoting sustainable agriculture and working with forest alliance vendors, the simply divine Sibu Sura Chocolates should not be missed! Words by Jeanne Marie Ford If you live in Frederick County, you’ve probably heard of Patty Pollatos. You’ve seen the signs around town: the Patty Pollatos Fund is holding a 5K race to benefit a community member with cancer; the Patty Pollatos Fund is raffling off a house in Thurmont; the Patty Pollatos Fund is holding a dance or sponsoring a penny drive at your child’s school.
"Who is Patty Pollatos?" you may have wondered. Pollatos was a lifelong resident of the Mt. Airy/New Market area. When she was diagnosed with cancer and facing insurmountable medical bills, she ultimately had one simple goal—to be able to die with dignity in her own home. Her dear friend Debbie Williams mobilized community support to raise the $20,000 to make that goal a reality. After Pollatos died in 1992, Williams felt called to continue what she had started. She founded the Patty Pollatos Fund to help patients with cancer and other catastrophic illnesses. Twenty years later, hundreds of families and thousands of volunteers have been touched by the organization’s work. WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

Kim Smith, the vice president of the PPF, talks passionately of the young mother who has been awaiting a heart transplant for four years; the retired police officer beloved by the community he served for so long; the college student who overcame leukemia; the recipient who fought to see her son’s birthday before dying the next day. She talks about mobilizing volunteers to keep a 24-hour vigil at the side of a fallen Frederick County serviceman. She talks about her son’s best friend, who beat cancer in fifth grade and inspired her own involvement in the PPF. When asked how many people volunteer in a given year, she is not sure because the number is so large. In addition to much-needed financial support, the PPF provides resources and tools that allow affected families to help themselves. “People don’t like to take a donation from a friend,” says Smith, “but if it comes through the mail, they accept the help. The hardest part is getting people to accept the help.” A volunteer “team” is recruited for each recipient. Friends of each recipient are coached to use scheduling tools such as lotsahelpinghands.com to coordinate child care, meal delivery, house cleaning, or whatever might be needed. Because of the time-consuming nature of many treatments, Smith explains, families have little time or energy left over to explore assistance that may be available to them. PPF staff are skilled at helping with paperwork and finding resources to provide additional aid. Most of all, PPF volunteers know how to throw a party. Recipients' friends are given a crash course in the art of fundraising. Benefit events are tailored to the interests of the recipient’s team—bowling, bingo, billiards—whatever seems likely to draw the most enthusiastic response. PPF, Inc. is an all-volunteer organization. Any donation made in a given recipient’s name goes directly to that individual. This money may be used to pay medical bills, household expenses accrued through lost work time, or even funeral expenses and survivor support. Smith tells of the dance planned for a recent recipient who passed away before it was held—yet the dance went on in celebration of his memory.

SHARE iT! The Fund’s biggest annual fundraiser is the Family FUNomenon, which is held each summer at the Frederick County Fairgrounds. Admission for adults is $35 and includes all entertainment and food. Last year, the Oak Ridge Boys were the featured musical act. For children, there are moon bounces, pony rides, fair games, costumed characters, animals from the Catoctin Zoo and much more. Advertisements sold for the FUNomenon Entertainment Books serve as a major source of income for recipients throughout the year. Smith explains that recipients feel good about earning money by selling some of the ads themselves. “It’s not a handout, but a hand up,” she says. Other PPF programs include an annual December bash at the Elks Lodge for developmentally disabled adults, complete with karaoke, Santa, elves and, of course, presents. Christmas Cash for Kids provides gifts for children who would otherwise do without. “The community of Frederick County is so giving and compassionate that a lot of people don’t even know who they’re giving donations for,” Smith says. She mentions a restaurant fundraiser in which the wait staff donated not only their time but their tips to the cause. Boy Scouts man booths at the FUNomenon. Young people are given mentoring opportunities and can earn community service hours for volunteering. “Word of mouth in Frederick County is huge,” say Smith. “Everyone is out to help one another—and through the Patty Pollatos Fund, they can do it.” www.ppfinc.org PPF, Inc. 11102 Eagletrace Court New Market, MD 21774-6704

LEARN iT! Chef Jon Kimbrough says, “In developing the curriculum, I wanted students to progress through a series of classes in order to finally be ready to work in a restaurant setting. This is the primary goal of the program—for students to be prepared to work in the food services industry.” The restaurant was a natural outgrowth of this plan. “As an educator,” Kimbrough explains, “I knew this was something we needed to establish in the program to assess our students’ ability to do the work.” Doree-Lynn Miles, the program’s academic office manager, says that an older on-campus venue had been less than optimal in terms of space and parking. “The new facility at 200 Monroe is completely state-of-the-art gorgeous,” she says. “Just top-of-the-line everything.” Located near the Fairgrounds, the kitchen includes 18 different work stations, and all culinary classes are now taught there. Currently in its second year, the restaurant opens for limited dates in the spring as a test kitchen for graduating students. Highly trained faculty supervise the future chefs, who put their hard-won skills to practical use. Over five weeks, they learn the ins and outs of hostessing, serving, and food prep in the real world. After a period of intense training and several dry runs, students alternate between positions in the “front of the house” and the “back of the house.” By the end of the five-week period, they’ve had vital experience doing every job in the restaurant. Kimbrough says, “It’s nerve-racking for everyone, because it’s [the students’] time to show what they know. It’s a culmination of everything they’ve learned up to that point, and now it’s the opportunity to demonstrate their proficiency.” He adds, “Instructors are a little nervous too, concerned about how students are going to perform, wanting paying customers to have a good dining experience.”

LEARN iT! For patrons, 200 Monroe is an opportunity to enjoy an upscale meal at a moderate price. Menu items include gourmet salads and pizzas, as well as entrees such as miso-glazed Atlantic salmon and New York strip steak. Desserts range from vanilla bean crème brulée to warm cookies and milk. If you are envisioning a scene from The Food Network’s “Chopped,” rest assured that culinary instructors will not be hovering over your table in an attempt to “grade” your meal. Work is assessed by peers and, if patrons wish to participate, customer survey. “The quality of the students graduating from our program has definitely increased since the establishment of the restaurant in our program,” says Kimbrough. “We’re not graduating students we think can cook, manage and supervise. Now we know they can.” “I ate there last year,” Miles offers. “It was fantastic.” In fact, the restaurant proved so popular that additional seating has been added this spring, including a prix fixe menu for lunch. So get on your “Iron Chef,” and get yourself a reservation. You won’t have another opportunity until next year. 200 Monroe Restaurant www.frederick.edu/200monroe 200 Monroe Avenue Frederick, MD 21701 For reservations call 301-788-9912, or visit www.opentable.com.

En
air
Words by Ty Unglebower En plein air is a French term meaning “in the open air. The expression is most commonly utilized to describe the act of painting while outdoors. Beginning in the mid to late 1800s as painting equipment became more portable, en plein air painting became increasingly popular with both amateur artists and the masters.
Imagine walking around Paris in the last quarter of the 19th century. You perhaps would see Claude Monet himself among other painters outside, stationed all over the place with their supplies, capturing on canvas what the natural outdoor light revealed to them. You might experience a feeling of art being almost literally in the air all around you. Now imagine walking around in downtown Frederick between June 20 and June 22. Claude Monet of course is no longer with us, but downtown strollers will see WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

plenty of other professional en plein air painters plying their craft during the 2012 Easels in Frederick event, sponsored by the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center. During those summer days downtown, juried artists from all over the country will set up their easels, ready their canvases, mix their paints, and home their artistic vision upon inspiring vistas, buildings, and activities. But instead of the Seine, some of them may paint Carroll Creek. Instead of the Eiffel Tower, perhaps the Baker Park bell tower. Or a view of Market Street, as opposed to a view of the Champs-Elysees. For those days in June, Frederick, like the Paris of yesteryear, will know the feeling of art in the air around nearly every corner. Thirty artists out of dozens of nationwide applicants will be selected to participate in the competition by this year’s entry juror, professional artist and educator John Budicin of San Bernardino, California. Then each selected contestant must submit two completed works created in their entirety between June 20 and June 22. Subjects of the paintings must fall within certain boundaries in downtown Frederick. Artists are not permitted to use photographs for reference. For example, last year’s grand prize winner, Hiu Lai Chong of Rockville, chose the water fountain in front of City Hall as her subject. However, it was by no means the only scene in town from which she could have drawn inspiration. “Frederick is a charming and inspiring town,” she said, reflecting on her 2011 Easels in Frederick experience. “Everywhere I looked, there was something I would love to be able to capture on my canvas.” The organizers of the event wish to emphasize the event’s economic advantage to the city, in addition to its artistic benefits. “Many of the artists will be housed with local residents,” explained event co-chair Vicki Glenn. “They will patronize local restaurants and shops… The economic contribution of Easels in Frederick is that art is good for business.” Those interested in seeing this year’s artists at work during the competition are encouraged to pick up a map of the designated area and explore. Maps can be obtained at one of two locations: the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center

ViSiT iT! on 40 South Carroll Street or the Downtown Frederick Partnership on 15 East Church Street. Most of the competitors will be out painting all throughout the day on June 20 and 21 and especially at sunrise and sunset when natural lighting is ideal. The paintings must be complete by 4 p.m. on Friday, June 22, when Nashville, Tennessee native and full time painter Lori Putnam will judge the entries and award prizes to the winners: $5,000 for the grand prize, a $2,500 second prize and $1,500 for third prize. Prizes of $1,000 will also be awarded to paintings with the best use of light and best architectural subject. Several other cash prizes will also be awarded for special honors such as People’s Choice, selected via vote by members of the public, and Collector’s Choice, chosen by attendees of a special reception. On Sunday, June 24 beginning at 1:00 p.m. the public is invited to the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center to listen to Putnam discuss her judging criteria. Afterwards there will be a public exhibit and sale of all of the 2012 Easels in Frederick submissions and award winners. The artists themselves will be on hand to chat with visitors and to discuss their work. Whether you have a passion for art, a love of downtown Frederick, and certainly if both describe you, take the time to observe Easels in Frederick and the various related activities that will take place leading up to it. At the Roads & Rails Museum, one of the last things you’ll hear before you duck behind a curtain and walk up a short set of stairs into the giant room beyond is this: “Make sure to press all the buttons.”
It’s a curious thing to say, you’ll think, as you smile and nod. Press all the buttons? Why? How many can there be? What do the buttons do? If it’s your first time visiting the museum, located at the corner of 2nd and East Streets in downtown Frederick, you will be in for many fantastic surprises. If it’s your second, third or fourth, you’ll know all about the buttons, but finding them and pushing them will still be a delight. By my family’s count, at least 18 buttons are spread throughout the massive room that is home to an unbelievable mini-world full of people, dinosaurs, animals, buildings, movie theaters, restaurants, factories, caves, mines, farms, movie and TV scenes, and of course, lots and lots of trains.
63
ViSiT iT! After passing through the entranceway, you realize you are walking through a tunnel in a huge, realistic mountain. Spread out before you is a tiny world that it would literally take hours to fully explore. Peering through the plexiglass shield, you see some trains speeding by you. The New York Central, a large, impressive passenger train that looks like the kind you’d love to take across country in real life, drives around the entire display. If you take time to stop and really look, you’ll also see children running to a playground. Then press a button and watch a church coming alight as it fills up with congregants. Press another button, and you’ll activate a volcano. Delightful details abound. Keep walking, and you’ll pass by a group of factories. Look closer, and you’ll realize you’re staring at Dunder Mifflin, the paper company made famous in the TV show “The Office,” as well as local favorite Flying Dog brewery. Just around the corner, fans of the defunct TV series “Lost” will recognize “the Hatch,” with characters Hurley, Jack, Locke and others gathered around it, and the infamous Volkswagen van parked nearby. But perhaps one of the most visually dazzling parts of the museum is the carnival scene, with its glowing, flashing lights and many moving parts. This carnival is better than any real one you’ve ever visited, with its Phoenix roller coaster zooming riders up, down, around, and upside down. The Zinger, the Cha Cha, a Ferris wheel and carousel ride, even a Tunnel of Terror, hot air balloon rides, and bumper cars all blink and flash, catching visitors’ eyes.
64
SPRING 2012
ViSiT iT! No detail goes undone at this museum. When you first notice the zoo scene, you’ll smile at the animals in their cages and the people walking by. But then, wait! Is that a monkey roaming free, trying to escape? And as you walk by what seems like a fairly normal farming scene, you realize some crop circles have been formed, and a group of aliens has landed, attempting to greet some confused cows. Founded by David Burroughs and his family, the Roads & Rails Museum “houses one of the largest miniature world model train displays in the country,” according to its website, and is designed to be “a fun display of three-dimensional art, combined with sound and movement.” The museum is truly a family business, created and maintained by an enthusiastic group of longtime model railroaders. David Burroughs enjoyed the hobby along with his sons, David, John, and Matt, and when it was time for the father to retire, the idea came to create a place where the public could enjoy all of the trains and paraphernalia the family had amassed over the years. For three years, the Burroughs men, along with a few other craftsmen, worked to construct what they call one of the largest O scale model railroad displays in the country. For the first several months of its existence, the museum has focused on the “rails” part of its name. But by early summer, Matt Burroughs said, the plan is to expand into the “roads” by showcasing historic automobiles, mostly from the 1950s and 1960s, in an adjacent building. The Burroughs plan to begin renovating and constructing the area this spring, and to invite the public to watch its transformation. In the meantime, visiting the railroad display will keep children and adults alike entertained for a very long time. If you’re up for a challenge, be sure to ask for a copy of the homemade scavenger hunt sheet on your way in. Answering questions such as “How Many Cavemen Are There?” or “How Many People Are Being Arrested?” may seem simple at first glance, but don’t get too cocky. Though I was able to spot the scene from “Jaws,” I still can’t figure out where Crockett and Tubbs from the 1980s TV show “Miami Vice” were hiding! www.roadsnrails.com Roads & Rails Museum 200 N. Words by Shuan Butcher Have you ever wondered why the city’s seal includes church spires? Steeples in downtown areas aren’t unique in American towns, but John Greenleaf Whittier’s poem about Barbara Fritchie, penned in 1863, forever immortalized Frederick’s clustered spires. A phrase of just five words in a folklorish tale about a woman’s stand against the Confederate Army has become synonymous with the City of Frederick for the past 150 years.

ViSiT iT! The clustered spires are symbols of our city. To some, they represent faith. To others, they may be a particular place. They are definitely pieces of architecture and have historical value. That is why we also have a golf course, pastry shop and more named after them. Of course, Frederick is also home to the Spires Brass Band and the Clustered Spires Chorus. Furthermore, the clustered spires have been captured visually by artists throughout history. Helen Smith, one of Frederick’s earliest commercial artists as well as one of the city's most famous, designed a logo for the city’s bicentennial in 1945 featuring the Clustered Spires. Ultimately, this logo was updated in 1979 and became the city’s seal. Other artists, such as Barry Richardson and David Yontz, prominently used the spires as subject

ViSiT iT! matter for their artwork during their lifetimes. Today, that practice is no different. For example, New Market artist Harry Richardson and others have made it a point to capture the clustered spires in their glory during all four seasons. In painting, photography, mixed media, fabric art and other media, artists have depicted the spires. Peter and Richard Markey have featured the clustered spires in their metal sculptures, and for a public art competition sponsored by the City of Frederick in 2004, Maryland artist Scott Cawood depicted his own modern-day rendition of “The Spire” in Baker Park. The clustered spires of Frederick will continue to be captured in various art forms in the future. As the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Whittier's poem and all that it represents will once again take centerstage.

MOVE iT! Owner Patrick Smith, a Frederick County native, took his first Tailwinds flight in 2010 and has been traversing the Frederick skies in his colorful ride since then. As a certified commercial pilot and instructor, Smith began flying in 2004 and spent hours flying and instructing in airplanes before finding his way around an airborne wicker basket. Hot air ballooning may be new to the Frederick skies, but it’s not new to the world. As a matter of fact, the first manned hot air balloon flight took place in 1783 in France. And balloons have since been used in everything from military strategy to saying, “I do.” Hundreds of years later, hot air balloons are still being used for a variety of activities, most of which involve an awesome way to have some serious fun. Locally, you can book a flight with Smith to take to the Frederick skies for an afternoon of enjoyment. But, after spending a day with the staff of Tailwinds Over Frederick and their newest balloon (which is incidentally noted as the biggest hot air balloon in the entire state of Maryland) at the Frederick Municipal Airport for a test flight, I can tell you certainly that there’s more to ballooning than just a leisure jaunt through the clouds. Hot air ballooning is hard work! The bigger, better and more technologically modern balloon was impressive for sure, but I had no idea that taking to the sky took so much hard work, or a team of really enthusiastic and passionate people, to make it happen. There’s a good amount of hauling, tying, unwrapping and prepping to be done before one can even begin the necessary safety checks needed to get the balloon into the air. But, as Smith explains, that is all a part of the experience.

Balloon riders get to partake in the entire experience, and being a part of it all really adds to the adventure of it. As if sailing through the clouds isn’t adventurous enough! TCP
The buzz on the street is that TCP (That Cuban Place) is just moments away from reopening their doors to the hungry masses that have spent the last few months following around their food truck! Previously a bright, happy store front on Market Street, TCP was informed that their rented space was no longer safe. So they had to pack up their wares and find another way to provide their delicious recipes to all the Cuban lovin' foodies. After a stint in their shiny food truck, they are finally rising up from the disappointment to open a new and much larger location on Church Street. With more room and easy parking, we hope Alfredo and Narcisa got some rest during their cooking hiatis...cause they're gonna be super busy! www.thatcubanplace.com 506 E. OVER THE EDGE!
BULLS
& BEARS For starters, a great place to eat is Bulls and Bears. As something of a combination of an old-time tavern, a sports bar and a restaurant, it defies categorization while providing some of the best lunchtime fare in the city. Upon walking through the front door you’ll encounter a display of 1920s antiques, including an early model Ford pickup and gas pump. This little mall of antiquity matches nicely with the architecture outside and sits directly across from a firehouse that proudly displays its century-old fire wagon in the front window. But upon entering the seating area of the restaurant, the aesthetic has more of a 19th-century English tavern feel, which is defined by extensive use of dark wood furnishing and low lighting. High above the bar are several flat TV screens displaying sports from all over the country, so you can relax as you follow your favorite team. The lunch menu features extensive lists of soups and sandwiches at reasonable prices and with delicious flavor. The reuben I ordered was piled so high with thick slices of corned beef that I had trouble getting my mouth to fit around it—one of my favorite problems to have! On another day (because you can’t just go to this place once!) I ordered their club sandwich and had even more difficulty in this regard, only with ham. Rarely is it so impossible for me to leave a restaurant without lingering hunger, but they certainly managed the trick. To walk off the heavy meal, I recommend a trip to the Hagerstown City Park. As you approach it from Route 11, it looks like little more than a small hill with a lake at the bottom, but don’t let outward appearances fool you. Besides having more extensive grounds over the hill, the park is home to the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts—one of the best art museums in Maryland outside of Baltimore—and given its quality, I was shocked that I hadn’t heard of it prior to my recent visit. I honestly got excited just approaching the outside of the

OVER THE EDGE! building, which with its grand archway, columns, and dome looks more like a Roman temple than an art museum in mid-Maryland. Although this immediately bred high expectations, it could not prepare me for the beauty and grandeur within. This little park museum houses genuine original paintings from the Italian Renaissance, as well as several galleries full of classical sculpture, pottery, woodwork, and paintings that span about five centuries. As a medievalist, I was floored. It was as though an entire wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art had been airlifted to a location where I could easily access it. What’s more, admission is naught but your choice of donation. This might be the best museum I’ve even seen for introducing young children to classic art and history. Speaking as a huge fan of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, even I found the D.C. museums somewhat oppressive as a child, because they involved awaking before the sun, riding in scary traffic and then walking more miles than my little legs could support. But this museum lies in easy reach and allows the public to get really close to the exhibits. The best part might be that after children tour the art, they can rush outside to explore the massive park’s several playgrounds, including one just behind the museum near a natural pool full of large fish. Not far from here up on a big hill is a long wooden staircase that divides off into several landings with outdoor dining areas. During the warm months, this would make an excellent place to bring a picnic basket and enjoy a sweeping view of the green park below and the opposite hill lined with Victorian-era homes. The

extensive wooden structure reminded me strongly of the Swiss Family Robinson tree house that I saw in Disney World as a child, so I imagine kids would love it for playing make-believe. Over on a neighboring hill lie some intact remnants of Hagerstown’s railroad heyday. Behind a chain-link fence sits a genuine 19th century steam engine attached to a few cars. A small distance away you can get an up-close look at an old red caboose car like the kind featured in The Boxcar Children book series. If you follow the path of the creek, eventually you’ll run into what looks like a large18th century home from the back, only to realize that the front of it is actually a large public bandshell. In the spring and summer, it plays host to great outdoor concerts, including bluegrass bands. Speaking of performances, downtown Hagerstown is the home of the Maryland Theatre, which holds a special place in my heart because I actually participated in one of its shows as a child. I distinctly remember playing the part of a magical fish and walking around town between performances with ridiculous makeup all over my face. But in addition to being a great place for kids to get creatively silly, the Theatre also features performances by professional arts schools, dance shows, comedy acts, choirs, concerts, magic shows, dramas and more! Hagerstown also makes a really great base for exploring the broader Washington Country area, which like Frederick has many significant Civil War sites. The visitor center in the heart of town provides extensive maps of the area, and the staff is great at helping to plan individual trips. If you are a fan of history and the arts as I am, Hagerstown makes a great weekend visit!
