frederick? We took a break from our fun, little game for a few issues, but our readers won't let it stop for too long. So, after much begging, pleading, and cajoling from the masses ... here we go! Explore Frederick County, and when you figure out where the photo was taken, email your answer, along with your name and a phone number, to ifoundit@pulsepublishing.net. Now, pay attention, because the rules have changed. Instead of the first correct answer, we will take all correct answers and have our super powerful, random-selecting computer, randomly select a winner. Good luck!

and so it is said‌
We should probably just go ahead and call this the “beverage issue. Frederick is known for its historic buildings, charming storefronts, and eclectic offerings. A walking tour of downtown to explore all the creative diversity is a favorite pastime for locals and visitors alike; but, all that walking is sure to make you thirsty! So, in this issue, we get to know several specialty stops featuring coffee, wine, and soda pop. Each spring the sounds of chirping birds, children playing outdoors, and the smell of farm fields being prepped for seed fill the air. The county is waking up and it's ready to play! So head out to a local farm and watch the new baby calves and sheep being born, dine on the patio of one of the many welcoming restaurants, or learn a new skill (perhaps knitting a bathing suit cover-up?). There is still time! Now that we can be reasonably certain that the snow of the past season is a distant memory, it's time to start planning some fun Frederick adventures, that don't include shoveling, sledding, or hot cocoa!

SAVOR iT!
The Perfect Blend CafĂŠ is situated at the corner of North Court and West Patrick streets in Downtown Frederick, in the lobby of the historic Francis Scott Key Hotel. The hotel opened in 1922, and was sold in the 1970s then converted to a retirement home until the year 2000. In 2002, this historic building became the home of Francis Scott Key Apartments, attracting mostly urban professionals.

SAVOR iT!
The space occupied by The Perfect Blend Café since 2013 has housed a few cafes over the years. The Perfect Blend is a welcome addition to the building. Upon entering the café, you may be greeted, as we were, by 21-year-old owner Rachel Joannides. Yes, that’s right, I said 21 years old. A recent college graduate, Rachel wasn’t sure where her career path would lead her, and through her parents, who are long-time business owners themselves, she found the opportunity of a lifetime – a chance to run her own business right in her hometown. Rachel jumped at the chance and hasn’t looked back. When speaking about the café, Rachel gets giddy with excitement and can’t contain her smile. She has been working very hard to make the café a favorite go-to place for residents of the apartment building, employees at the courthouse, patrons at the Weinberg, and anyone else who frequents Downtown Frederick. The Perfect Blend Café is small and quaint with hardwood floors and three small tables. A window-front bar offers a place to sit or stand and watch the hustle and bustle of downtown. None of the food offered in the café is actually prepared on the premises; it’s all brought in by other local businesses. All of the hot drink offerings – coffee, espresso, tea, chai, and hot chocolate – are from Baltimore Coffee and Tea Company. Cold drink offerings include iced coffee, tea, latte, lemonade, and frozen coffee and fruit drinks. Breakfast and lunch sandwiches are made by HoneyBaked Ham of Frederick, which is owned by Rachel’s parents. Fresh soups and salads come from Trout’s Market in Woodsboro. And the café’s bakery case offers apple fritters, danish, cinnamon buns, muffins, cake slices, bagels, and brownies.

SPRING 2014
SAVOR iT!
In addition to food brought in by local businesses, they also offer Uncle Ralph’s cookies, fresh fruit, yogurt, hummus with pretzels, small bags of chips, bottled juices, sodas, and waters. All of these offerings are packaged to-go for the person on the run, or can be enjoyed inside the café. Doughnuts are delivered fresh daily, but make sure you go early. By lunchtime, the doughnut case is often empty. Almost every customer who walks through the door seems to know Rachel by name and often stops to have a conversation with her before leaving. One of her regular customers is a resident of the apartment building – an elderly gentleman who has lived in the building for many years. Rachel shared with us that he comes in daily to talk to her and buys coffee for customers who he doesn’t even know. Where else can you find this kind of friendliness and hometown feel? So stop by The Perfect Blend Café the next time you’re in Downtown Frederick and need to pick up something quick to eat or drink. Sit for a spell and watch the news on the wall-mounted TV, sit at the window-front bar and watch the world go by, or drink a cup of espresso and check your email using the free Wi-Fi. You won’t be sorry. The Perfect Blend Café 31 W Patrick Street, Frederick, MD 21701 240-439-4187 www.theperfectblendcafe.com

SAVOR iT
I’m enough of a food snob that I infinitely prefer a selection of wine and cheese to beer and pretzels, no matter the occasion (boy, do I look odd at Super Bowl parties), but I’m such a lazy bum that I really hate to dress in the kind of clothes one associates with places that normally have wine and cheese selections.
At Vini Culture, there is no need for you to polish your dress shoes before being granted access to a wide selection of fine wines and culinary excellence! You can tell just by looking in from the street that this place fosters a welcoming, casual atmosphere. The front window displays that used to feature the fine art of the Museum Shop that used to occupy the storefront are now home to a comfy sofa and coffee table, similar to what you are likely to find at a coffee shop. As soon as you walk in the door, you’ll be greeted by one of the friendly staff members, who will explain the neat idea behind the setup. They offer about 20 wines ranging from $5 to $30 per glass, but if you just want to sample everything before committing to a full glass, no problem! Instead of looking at a menu and asking a server to bring your order, you can use the automatic wine dispensers to browse through the bottles and make your selections.
38
SAVOR iT! Just add money to the smart cards they give you at the door, push the card into the machine, and select your wine and serving size. They come in 2 oz, 4 oz, and 6 oz servings, all differently priced depending on the bottle. Never having been to a wine bar, I admit to being a little confused about how to operate the machines, but no sooner than I looked lost did a friendly hostess come behind me and explain what I was doing wrong. Besides the fun of getting to look at all of the wine labels instead of reading a list off a menu, this is a good system for people who like to try many different types of wine without buying entire bottles or spending more than they intended. I liked being able to look into my wallet, see that I had $20 to spare, and then putting that on the smart card right at the door. That way I was sure that I wasn’t going to accidentally lose track of how much wine I was ordering or be surprised by the bill at the end of the visit.
39
SPRING 2014
SAVOR iT! Oh, and the food? Delicious and reasonably priced! Wine always puts me straight in the mood for Mediterranean fare, so along with a midrange Cabernet and Riesling, I ordered a three-dip tray consisting of hummus, spicy feta, and olives, served with pita chips. The tinge of salty sharpness was an especially effective offset to the sweetness of the Riesling. It was a perfect snack for me to just stop in and check the place out, but if you’re feeling a bit more peckish, they have complete lunch and dinner menus. Next time I’m definitely going to tackle their savory roast beef sandwich, recommended to me by a friend. I must confess, however, that I worried with only 20 wines to try, I might find the selection a bit stale on repeat visits, but my concerns were quickly allayed by a chat with one of the friendly staff. Having only been open since January, they’re barely out of the gate of possibilities. They plan to not only bring in a much larger selection in the coming months, but also to eventually establish a rotation so that no one wine will grow tired. While I went alone on my first visit, I’m thinking that this particular blend of a comfy, casual ambiance with funky music and fun wines would make for the perfect date night. The place was full of couples chitchatting about the wines and teasing each other for using the machines wrong as they browsed through selections together. So the next time you’ve got someone special to impress, trust me when I say that Vini Culture will do the trick just fine. Vini Culture 20 North Market Street Frederick, MD 21701 301-695-2816

Until I was about 10 years old, as far as I knew, all soda came in cans or large plastic bottles. But one day, on a fateful trip to the public library downtown, I discovered a magical vending machine that offered Coca-Cola in hard glass bottles.
44
SAVOR iT! I’d never tasted a soda in a glass bottle before, and there was something so special and interesting about the experience. The Coke tasted just a little bit better that day, and I felt special just holding onto it. Though it was rare back then to find a single serving of soda in a glass bottle, nowadays, more and more gourmet and specialty soda makers are producing the beverages and offering them in a variety of flavors and colors to the masses, in glass. And Downtown Frederick has a shop dedicated to selling these special bottles to anyone willing to venture up North Market Street. The North Market Pop Shop, located at 237 North Market, is a haven for soda lovers, with 22 different varieties of root beer alone! Once inside, you’ll find a wall stocked high and wide with an amazing array of colors and flavors, brands and varieties of classic and new and unique sodas. Whether you’re a fan of root beer, cream soda, lemon-lime, cola, ginger ale, or orange, you’ll find dozens of different types of these classic flavors lined up and ready for purchase. Seeking something a bit more adventurous? Well, the Pop Shop’s got you covered there, too. How about trying one of the offerings from Avery’s Beverages “Totally Gross” soda line? Toxic Slime, an electric blue soda with white bits floating inside looks like a science experiment gone wrong, but its blue raspberry, orange and lemon flavor made it a favorite of my own kids. Or how about Dog Drool? The pinkish white drink has an allnatural orange-lemon flavor that is actually quite delightful! Fancy “breakfast in a bottle”? Then grab a chocolate-covered maple smoked bacon soda. It’s real, and it’s actually pretty good! Grape smoothie, blood red cola, cherry bomb, blueberry, black cherry, ginger beer… the flavors are almost endless. And the best part? Many of them are all natural, using real cane sugar or stevia and other natural flavorings. Owner Michelle Schaffer bought The North Market Pop Shop in September 2013 from the Laird family, who started the business of selling nostalgic and

Schaffer’s goal at the Pop Shop is to sell both nostalgic and harder to find sodas created across the U.S. Customers can pick up one soda at a time or create mixed 4-packs, 6-packs, or cases. The shop also sells amazing ice cream from Trickling Springs Creamery. It is made with organic milk and mostly natural ingredients, and the flavors are phenomenal. Try one in an amazing milkshake. Or, even better, combine it with some soda for a unique float (grape soda with peanut butter ice cream! or a classic root beer float with vanilla). Schaffer said she bought the shop because she always wanted to be her own boss and see something succeed using her problem-solving skills. She recently expanded the shop’s offerings selection to include hot dogs with special sauces and relish. As a newer transplant to Frederick from Portland, Ore., Schaffer says Frederick reminds her of that infamous locale, where there were many neighborhoods which all had their own personality and attitude. Downtown Frederick customers have a real interest in seeing small businesses thrive, and she’s excited about her loyal customers who help her business grow. Once customers discover the Pop Shop, many find their favorite drink then return time and again to pick up their hard-to-find fix. Just as Downtown Frederick is becoming more of a destination for out-of-town visitors, the Pop Shop is becoming a destination for soda lovers. Regardless of why people come into the shop, Schaffer says she has one goal: “I really just want to have everyone leave with a smile on their face!” North Market Pop Shop 237 N. LEARN iT! Fox Haven Learning Center, “a gathering place to reconnect with nature,” is a 600-acre farm, nature preserve, wildlife sanctuary, ecological retreat and learning center situated just off the beaten path in Jefferson, Md. Fox Haven promotes “restoring health of the land, protecting the water quality of Catoctin Creek, and providing habitat for wildlife.” One snowy morning in February, I visited Fox Haven to get a firsthand perspective of what it was all about. Deputy Director Renee Bourassa was kind enough to give me a tour. Fox Haven is all about reusing and repurposing. This is evident in the farm’s original buildings, which have been restored and are being used to further Fox Haven’s purpose. The huge, red Chestnut Barn is a gorgeous event venue used for story times, barn dances, weddings, and other large celebrations anytime during the warmer months of the year. The Dairy Parlor, which, as the name implies, was once used to milk cows, is now used for retreats, speakers, team building workshops, and smaller events. Both the Spring House, which sleeps 12, and the Chestnut House, which sleeps 7, are fully furnished with antiques, linens, blankets, pillows, and a fully stocked kitchen, to preserve that old farmhouse charm. The gorgeous hardwood floors, log cabin walls, and the smell of the wood-burning fireplaces bring you back to the houses 19th century origins. These houses offer modern conveniences, such as Wi-Fi, phone service, a washer and dryer, an oven, a dishwasher, and small appliances. Both of these farmhouses are available for overnight, weekend, or weeklong stays to accommodate groups for family reunions, retreats, group workshops, or for wedding parties and guests. Catering is available upon request, or you can bring your own food. A 25-person Pacific Yurt, which is a strong round tent with a wooden floor, offers a more rustic overnight experience and amazing views. During your stay, you can go hiking, swimming in Catoctin Creek, and bird watching — herons, bald eagles, wild turkeys, hawks, and song birds are abundant. You’re also bound to see deer, foxes, beaver, and other small wild animals. Fox Haven even offers massage therapy if you arrange it in advance. If you’re interested in a day trip or just a few hours’ visit to Fox Haven, take advantage of one of the many classes, lectures, workshops, films, discussion groups, or adult and children’s activities, which “foster innovative practices for a shared wellbeing.”

Fancy a game of chess but can’t find anyone to play? Then come join the Frederick Chess club every Wednesday at the Frederick Coffee Company for an evening of hot drinks and battle plans!
What I really like about the game of chess is that it has something to offer both the romantic spirit and the logical mind. For someone like me, who appreciates history and symbolism, there could hardly be a game with more fascinating aesthetic properties.

ViSiT iT! The 2,000 year-old mental sport of kings was born of battlefield strategy in the Middle East and traversed the ancient trade routes through the Roman Empire into the farthest corners of Western Europe and eventually the entire globe. Along the way it picked up new rules and customs while leaving a deep impression on local culture and language wherever it went. So while I’m not really a good player (understatement of the year), I like to collect sets with historical significance and I appreciate the feeling of being connected to ages past as I try to haplessly remember how each piece moves. But for others, the game is all about the rules and strategy. Chess is a battle of brains that pits your ability to calculate dozens of move sets against your opponent’s. These folks often spend years studying the great players and reading books on strategy, trying to navigate their way through a possible combination of move sets that is too large for any one human mind to comprehend. To give you an idea of the complexity, just the first four moves in the game contain a total of 318,979,564,000 possible combinations. It is the ultimate strategy game for those of you obsessed with numbers and logic. While I haven’t discovered a whole lot of overlap between folks who are interested in both the aesthetic and the deep strategy, lately it seems that they share a common problem: where to find someone who wants to

ViSiT iT! play. Being that I was the only one in my family who seemed to have caught the bug for it, I was really excited the first time I was sitting in the Coffee Co., and a group of people started setting up several boards with the large wooden Staunton pieces of regulation chess. At first I was a bit intimidated to jump in as I heard them talking advanced strategy and punching those little move clocks, but after a while I realized that they were friendly and I tried my luck. While most of the players here operate at a very high level and constantly seek new challenges, they’re also really patient with beginners. After I confessed that my interest in chess was more aesthetic than strategic, they took the time to teach me some basics, such as my weakest areas of defense and how to keep my own pawns from getting in my way. They promptly scolded me when I admitted that up until this point, my primary “strategy” depended on focusing on only one portion of the board at a time so that I wouldn’t get confused. For a while, I was worried that I was becoming a drag on their charity and contemplated bowing out, but then I met a player who was close to my own level and I ended up playing him to a draw. And I noticed something as the evening wore on. Even the best players settled into a more relaxed pace, spending more time chatting and enjoying their coffee than focusing on the games, which is where the real fun of chess lies for me. It’s nice to have to have an excuse to just sit and be social.

ViSiT iT! And it turns out that I’m not alone at the club in appreciating the aesthetic and historical value of the game, either. When I first mentioned the possibility of using anything other than regulation Staunton pieces, some of the players worried that it would confuse them and throw off their games, but on my second meeting with the group I brought my replica Isle of Lewis chess men and they were a big hit. The pieces are based on various Scandinavia sets from around A.D. 900 that were discovered in 19th century Scotland. You might know them better as the magical moving pieces that beat each other up in a game of Wizard’s Chess in the first “Harry Potter” movie. The other players were quite fascinated with them, and after some hesitation, agreed to play me on my set. It was a clever move on my part, because my familiarity with the pieces leveled the playing field a little bit, and I actually won a game when one of the club members mistook one of my rooks for a bishop! I offered to let him take back his fatal move, but he was really good-natured about it and insisted, “An error is an error.” He probably just took pity on the fact that I had been brutally losing game after game the previous week, but until I get more practice, I’m not above taking charity. Oh, one more thing. The official start time for the club is 5:30 every Wednesday night, but most of the members show up quite a bit later than that. So if you walk in then and there’s no one around, just hang out for a while and I promise someone will start setting up a board. OVER THE EDGE!
Words by Ty Unglebower Photos by Babette Daniels
What if we lived in a world in which gasoline, electricity and nuclear power never happened? A world where steam remained the primary power source in every facet of our lives? How might this have affected the way we travel, eat, work, play, and even dress ourselves? Might some of the Victorian sensibilities of the steam power era carry over to today and evolve? An entire subculture has arisen around this question; it’s called steampunk.

One can find novels, costumes, music, games, artwork, machines and mindsets dedicated to this relatively recent and growing sub-genre of science fiction. For true immersion into the steampunk experience, one can find all of the above and more on May 15, at the annual Steampunk World’s Fair in Piscataway, N.J. The fair is the largest ticketed steampunk-oriented event in the United States. Its website refers to steampunk as, “a bunch of stuff people do that’s vaguely ... inspired by mad science in a world that bears some sort of resemblance to the Victorian era.” Part comic-book convention, part renaissance fair and part masquerade ball, activities and events covering every aspect of steampunk can be found at the Steampunk World’s Fair. (Held this year at the Radisson and Embassy Suites in Piscataway. The spillover hotel is the Hotel Somerset Bridgewater, a short distance away by shuttle.) While there, ticket holders can find activities to suit various steampunk sensibilities. Lovers of live music can attend concerts by such acts as This Way to Egress, The Nathaniel Johnston Band or Frenchy and the Punk. There’s also “The Marvelous Midway,” a circus experience inspired, as most things steampunk, by the Victorian-era. Acrobats, jugglers, games, animals and food: the midway alone could keep you busy all day. Guests 21 years and older can attend a tasting and workshop about absinthe, a spirit popular among artists for centuries and only recently made legal again in the United States. Some say the drink has made people crazy. Others say that is all just an urban myth about a poorly understood beverage. The truth is explored in this workshop.

Costume parades. Short theatre performances. Author discussions: Something for every steampunk you know. But what if steampunk is totally foreign to you, and you don’t know a contraptor from a congeniator? Good news: you don’t have to. Organizers encourage the uninitiated and curious to come to the fair and learn all about the thriving, stylistic world they inhabit. And while you will no doubt see many colorful, outrageous and at times awe-inspiring costumes (all family-friendly) you won’t need one. You can come in shorts and a T-shirt if you prefer. The fair embraces all styles and temperaments. So whether you’re a hardcore steampunk enthusiast, or a mere curious sprocket, there is a place for you at the fair.
