AND SO IT IS SAID‌

It's springtime, people! I wasn't sure it would ever get here. Happy as I am that my daffodils are stretching towards the sun, I have to admit that the speed with which things are changing can be disconcerting sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I love the surprise 70 degree days in February, but it also makes me realize that I better enjoy each day as it is delivered, because it's all a gift. With each issue, we work hard to bring you stories about people, places, and possibilities. Stories that inspire you to try something new, donate your time and talents, give an old haunt a new chance, or simply to challenge yourself to see what's been right in front of you with fresh eyes. Whether it's an inspirational young adult, a tour of the county's best ice cream shops or a peek into the distillery craze, this issue has a little bit of everything that makes Frederick County so special. The county is changing and growing to better serve those that live here as well as those that play here. So put away the flannel and the excuses, and get out there and enjoy the gift that is Frederick County!

With a resume that includes first place laureate at the Joseph and Goldie Feder Competition, a summer tour of China with the U.S. National Youth Orchestra, a stint on NBC’s Celebrating Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Voice of America, and an appearance at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., 17-year-old Eileen Moudou has also accomplished more in her young life than others may even dream of. Eileen’s most recent accomplishment is having won this year’s Frederick Symphony Orchestra’s (FSO) Young Artist Competition. The Richard Montgomery High School senior began studying the violin at 8 years old. She is a two-time Junior Division semifinalist of the Sphinx Competition, a prestigious event held by an organization that’s artistically advised by Yo-Yo Ma. She is also the co-concertmaster and second violinist of the Liedergelt Quartet of the Philharmonic in the Maryland Classical Youth Orchestras. In addition to her musical accomplishments, Eileen gave a TEDx Talk about the benefits of classical music. She co-founded Tutti, a high school club dedicated to musically tutoring middle school students for free, and is an IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma Candidate, a National Merit Semifinalist and a global ambassador for the Racines Heritage Foundation, an organization dedicated to girls’ education in developing African countries. While school work and musical studies take up most of Eileen’s time, she's still a teenager seeking to keep a healthy life/work balance. We asked the vibrant teen to give us a peek into who she is... outside of music.

HEAR iT!

Q What ice cream flavor best describes you?  A Vanilla, because it's a classic and pretty versatile—I don't see it as boring

and mundane but rather something that goes well with many different other desserts, or can be enjoyed on its own with sprinkles or fudge or even by itself! Q What is your favorite word or phrase?  A My favorite word is definitely “defenestration.” I find it extremely funny that

history has necessitated the existence of this specific word.

Q What three words would your friends and family use to describe you?  A Stubborn, ambitious, and energetic—energetic because I sometimes let my

emotions get the best of me, especially when I'm happy! Ambitious because I set new goals for myself as soon as I meet my old ones, sometimes before I meet my old ones, and stubborn because I don't let others get in the way of me growing as a person to meet these goals, even if I don't always succeed in the end.

Q What are you most passionate about?  A Always, always, always, my first and foremost passion will be music. Specifically,

performing and hearing others perform is the best part of music for me, because the energy and emotions transferred from the composer, through the performer, to the audience is a truly priceless experience every time it occurs. Nothing I've experienced thus far in my life has ever touched me quite the way a spectacular performance has.

Q What do you do in your free time?  A Because music and school are such big parts of my life, I don't really have

much free time, especially nowadays! So whenever I do have some free time, I like to just take the time to relax, and let my mind wander. I've found that my stress levels decrease and my memory improves when I do this, so whether I'm in my room or waiting for a ride, I'll just sit there and look at nothing in particular, and see what my brain decides to dig up.

“I hope music takes me all over the country and all over the world, because I want to meet as many people as possible who have such drastically different backgrounds than mine but share the same fundamental interest as me. Throughout my life the most intriguing people I have met were introduced to me through music, and creating lifelong friendships like these is the most rewarding aspect of playing an instrument, short of performing itself.” After graduation, Eileen will continue her violin study at Columbia University in New York City. Nothing beats a big bowl of ice cream, especially when it is homemade and farm fresh. It is for this reason that Maryland created an Ice Cream Trail four years ago, the first of its kind in the country. Each year during the month of June (National Dairy Month), Maryland’s Ice Cream Trail launches a passport program to encourage visits to each participating creamery. Folks get their passport stamped during each visit, then submit the passport for a chance to win prizes. Of the state’s 450 dairy farms, eight offer on-the-farm ice cream, including three within a 30-minute drive of Downtown Frederick.

South Mountain Creamery 8305 Bolivar Road, Middletown | 301-371-8565 southmountaincreamery.com

South Mountain Creamery is known for bringing back the milkman, with home delivery service. But a trip to the farm is definitely worth it. The farm is open every day, and each day at 4 p.m., you can help feed the calves. You can also take a tour of the farm and watch the older cows being milked. At Karen’s Kountry Store, you can purchase a number of products that come directly from the farm, including regular and chocolate milk, eggs, yogurt, butter, beef, pork, chicken, and of course, ice cream! More than 40 flavors are available, including a delicious, flavorful peppermint. South Mountain Creamery was Maryland’s first on-the-farm dairy processing plant, which means their products are extremely fresh. They milk their cows two times per day and within 24 hours, the milk goes into the production plant less than 150 feet away. After processing and pasteurizing, it is made into a dairy product just one day later. The entire Sowers family — Randy, Karen, Ben, Abby — strives to ensure that South Mountain Creamery is a completely self-sustaining farm. Although you can visit the farm any day of the year, rain or shine, plan to visit during one of their special events. Each fall and spring the farm hosts a free festival with special activities such has hay rides, live music, additional vendors, face painting, cornhole tournaments and more.

Rocky Point Creamery

4323A Tuscarora Road, Tuscarora | 301-874-5005 rockypointcreamery.com Another Frederick County site on the trail is Rocky Point Creamery. Located off the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byway (U.S. Route 15) near the Potomac River and situated just east of Point of Rocks, this 175-acre farm has been in existence since 1883, now operated by the fourth generation of the Fry family. The creamery is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. Rocky Point boasts more than 70 flavors of ice cream, including handdipped and soft serve. A number of toppings and mix-ins are available, including candy bar pieces, Oreo cookies, almonds, chocolate chips, sprinkles, walnuts and various sauces. At Rocky Point Creamery, other classic ice cream favorites such as sundaes, shakes, and floats can also be ordered. You can also pick up eggs, cheese, meats and other items from the farm, including pasture-raised Angus Cross Beef, which includes no antibiotics and no hormones. Through October, Rocky Point Creamery is open every day except Mondays. Just behind the ice cream shop you can watch the 200 dairy cows that contribute to their fine product. Group tours of the farm are available by reservation and they also have a party room on site for rentals. One of the highlights is to visit the farm when their sunflowers are in bloom (they have nearly 3 acres reserved for sunflowers). You can cut your own to take home, and all of the proceeds go to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This farm also employs a number of green practices. For example, they use recycled fabric for insulation, a geothermal unit for heating and cooling, and their parking lot is made from recycled asphalt from the D.C. beltway.

VISIT iT!

LAUGHING the

WEEKEND AWAY Words by Ty Unglebower

Early in 2015, a local public official became brief, unenviable fodder for some national television comedy segments. The weeklong ordeal was either a source of excitement or embarrassment (and possibly both) for residents of the Frederick area. Whether viewed as a positive or a negative, one thing was certain about the brief national mockery: it was rare, and a bit surreal. The ups and downs of Frederick civic life don’t usually get national comic treatment. Such skewering is far more likely to occur “in house.” More specifically, on West Patrick Street on Sunday evenings at the Maryland Ensemble Theatre’s live comedy show, “The Last Hurrah.”

Photos courtesy of the MET

Trained improvisational actor and Maryland native Kevin Cole hosts the show. Attendance is free, and the show is also podcasted live on the internet via iTunes. Recordings of previous shows are available on the show’s website, also free. A so-called typical installment of “The Last Hurrah,” (if the word “typical” can apply to the zaniness) opens with a brief monologue from Cole. Though sketch comedy is often employed, most weeks the opening is followed by light-hearted panel discussion. Partially thematic but frequently free-floating, the conversation and antics of the panel of comedians cover not only local goings-on, but also just about anything that crosses their minds during the course of the lightly controlled chaos. The result is not

VISIT iT! unlike the familiar ebb and flow of bawdiness and off-the-cuff satire one might experience after a few drinks with old friends. A quick review of descriptions on the website of previous episodes reveals subjects as far ranging as Christmas traditions, UFOs, Viking funerals and “inopportune bowel movements.” (“The Last Hurrah” is probably better suited for adults most of the time.) The panel rotates from week to week, with some regulars in addition to the host. Most panelists are, like Cole, company members of the Maryland Ensemble Theatre, though special guests do appear on occasion. Due to its time slot, the show is one last chance to enjoy the weekend before heading home to prepare for work the next day, hence its title. It’s billed as a final chance to goof-off before preparing for another Monday, another work week, another test of endurance putting up with, “your stupid job ... your stupid boss with his stupid shirt and his stupid tie ...” in the words of “The Last Hurrah” theme song. The length of each week’s show is not set, and so it varies depending on a number of factors. The average length seems to be about one hour, though it sometimes runs as brief as 45 minutes, or as long as an hour and 20 minutes. Most of us don’t like to bid farewell to our weekends, but we nonetheless are forced to do so every week, assuming we earn a living. The folks that bring you “The Last Hurrah” can’t stop Monday from coming, but they may just help you greet it with a smirk. “THE LAST HURRAH” 7 p.m., Sundays Maryland Ensemble Theatre 31 W. VISIT iT!

PROHIBITION IS, FINALLY, OVER Craft distilling has finally, definitively, come to Frederick. This year, no less than six distilleries are expected to open for business in the Frederick region, joining Springfield Manor Winery and Distillery in Thurmont to bring craft distilling to the area for the first time since Prohibition. In addition, the Frederick Area Distillery Association has announced plans for a Frederick Distillery Trail, allowing spirits lovers to explore a delicious variety of drinks, close to home. All this comes as a result of a change to Frederick law last winter, which amended city code to allow for small craft distillery operations in the downtown area. The Frederick Area Distillery Association began meeting last year. Monica Pearce from Tenth Ward Distilling Company was the driving force behind the formation of the network after Tenth Ward joined the larger Maryland Distillers Guild, which aims to support craft distilling statewide. Plans are under way for the first Maryland Spirits Festival, to be located in Frederick annually. Look for more on dates, events and locations at marylandspirits.org.

TENTH WARD DISTILLING COMPANY 508 East Church St., Frederick 301-606-8645 | tenthwarddistilling.com As of this writing, Tenth Ward was gearing up for a late spring opening, with federal permits granted in early February and official spirits creation beginning soon after. Tenth Ward will focus mainly on whiskey, but also plans to produce some brandies and other barrel-aged spirits. The owners aim to be progressive and a little offbeat by experimenting with unconventional ingredients, recipes and aging techniques, they said. Their name inspiration comes from the distillery’s location on East Church Street. In the late 19th century the area was known as Frederick’s Tenth Ward. In this part of the industrial area of Frederick, there’s a strong tradition of hard work and grit that the owners hope to carry through their products. Tenth Ward’s founders have started Frederick’s distillery network group, and the distillery trail as well.

SAVOR iT! DRAGON DISTILLERY 1341 Hughes Ford Road, Suite 108, Frederick 301-378 2514 | dragondistillery.com Officially open since mid-February, this distillery is located near the Frederick Municipal Airport. The founder, a U.S. Navy veteran, comes from a long line of Frederick County natives, and returned to his roots after serving overseas for a number of years. Their current handcrafted artisan creations include Clustered Spires Vodka, named in honor of the City of Frederick, and Bad Bill Tutt Moonshine, bottled at 100-proof and named for the owner’s great-grandfather. As for the distillery’s name? It comes from the live-action role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons. The owners admit this makes them a bit geeky and offbeat, just the way they like their spirits, too. More small-batch spirits are in the works, made from locally sourced ingredients in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. Tours and tastings are available on weekends, and by appointment. McCLINTOCK DISTILLING 35 South Carroll St., Frederick 202-557-9914 | mcclintockdistilling.com Located in Downtown Frederick, McClintock Distilling prides itself on its commitment to the community, particularly in taking measures to ensure sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The distillers will launch with a craft gin using Appalachian-inspired botanicals as well as a sustainably sourced white whiskey. McClintock will also produce a bourbon and Irish-style whiskey that will be barrel-aged on site and will be available for sale in several years. The yet-to-be-opened distillery uses organic grains to produce the spirits that are milled in-house. And those grains don’t go to waste after they’re done creating artisan spirits. All spent grains will be used as livestock feed in local farms and heads are re-used as cleaning products in the distillery facility. The distillery is named for McClintock Young, Frederick resident and prolific inventor. With more than 100 patented inventions, McClintock had a vision of Frederick as a hub for innovation and manufacturing. According to the distillery owners, McClintock had a vision of Frederick as a flourishing city center and hub for manufacturing, commerce and culture. “McClintock Distilling shares this vision and strives to follow in McClintock's footsteps and develop our company with the people and culture of Frederick City.” WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

MISCellaneous DISTILLERY 114 South Main St, Mount Airy | miscdistillery.com Helmed by a former Washington, D.C. politico and a Peace Corps volunteer, Miscellaneous Distillery is planning to open in Mount Airy and start producing rum and rye whiskey. The distillery will source their grains from Gravel Springs Farm in Carroll County, which has reserved several acres to grow the distillery’s rye grain. Production and tastings will begin once the owners receive all of the needed permits from federal and state regulators. PATAPSCO DISTILLING COMPANY 7609 Main St, Sykesville | patapscodistilling.com Aiming for opening in May or June, Patapsco Distilling Company plans to produce vodka, Limoncello, Nocino, gin, rye and bourbon, as well as smaller amounts of seasonal spirits available only in the distillery store. That means you’ll have to go visit the space on Main Street in Sykesville. Production will start with vodka, created with 100 percent Maryland corn, then move on to bourbon and rye. Two other unique spirits on the menu, include Nocino, a pitch-black digestif made from black walnut trees, and Limoncello, created with lemons. Though the owners have yet to find a lemon grove in Maryland, they do know a guy who has a large black walnut tree, and they plan to harvest the nuts in May and begin creating Nocino. One more distillery is making plans to open later this year in Downtown Frederick. Frederick Distilling Company hopes to locate at 77 Carroll Creek Way. I LOVE CANDY

As the nation's only research-based candy store, True Treat Historic Candy is like taking a taste back in time. Some of the shop's treats come with deep roots in the customs of candy makers, dating back as far as 1591. Owner, candy historian and curator—Susan Benjamin—is a well known expert who is frequently tapped to discuss her take on sweet history. You can take a listen to her radio show, “Sweet Talkin’” which airs weekly online. As Benjamin says on her website, “History never tasted so good.” True Treats Historic Candy www.truetreatscandy.com 237 North Market St., Frederick 304-461-4714

Over the Edge in

Purcellville, Virginia

words by Molly Fellin Spence

For the last decade or so, Northern Virginia towns have sprouted into fun destinations for great food, delicious wines and spirits, and fun shopping. Purcellville, a quick, scenic 45-minute drive from Downtown Frederick, is no exception.

A day trip to the cute town is a must. You may start to get a little thirsty as you cross the Potomac River and pass by rolling farmland and a number of appealing wineries (the region is home to 20+). But your first stop is for some of the harder stuff.

OVER THE EDGE!

Catoctin Creek Distilling Company, on Main Street, the first legal distillery in Loudoun County since before Prohibition, is a must-visit. Schedule your trip around one of Catoctin Creek’s special events, such as cocktail classes, whiskey dinners, or monthly (free!) bottling workshops. Sign up online for the workshop and when you arrive you’ll be treated to free coffee and bagels and an informative tour. Next, participants team up to work through each of the steps of the bottling process, from cleaning out bottles to “milking the whiskey cow” to corking and labeling with a fancy French labeling machine. You can even purchase a bottle that you took through the entire process and marked with your initials. The workshop finishes with a free tasting of gin, whiskey, and other spirits in the tasting room and gift shop.

OVER THE EDGE!

Even if you visit when a special event is not scheduled, a short tour and paid tastings are always available. Do yourself a favor and take home a bottle of the distillery’s signature Roundstone Rye, an award-winning 100% rye spirit aged in new Minnesota white oak casks for just less than two years. It’s described as having a delicious woody taste, with notes of caramel, rich butter toffee and just a hint of lemon in the nose. Now that you have a belly full of some hard spirits, it’s time to find some good, hearty food. You won’t have to walk far. In the mood for something delicious, but casual? Cross Main Street and put in an order at Market Burger (a sister restaurant to Market Table Bistro, located in nearby Lovettsville).

It may look like a run-of-the-mill joint from the outside, but this place serves up fresh, local, farm-to-fork all natural Angus beef burgers topped with an amazing variety of condiments. Three types of mayo (curry, herb, chiptole) and three types of mustard (whole grain, yellow, maple), as well as house-made sweet-dill pickles, jalapeños, sautéed mushrooms or onions are just some of the complimentary toppings. Also available as toppings: Maytag blue cheese, Palmyra cheddar, local goat cheese, avocado or a local fried egg. Top off your meal with their crispy and salty hand-cut regular or sweet potato fries, or really go bonkers and order a specialty milkshake, such as the MBFS Candy Bar Shake (malt, Butterfinger, fudge, Snickers).

On your way to Magnolia’s you passed several great shopping destinations, along 21st Street. Step into history when you walk through the doors of Nichols Hardware, a family-owned Purcellville institution that recently celebrated its 101st year in business. As “your most dependable source of supply since 1914,” Nichols Hardware retains the charm of an early 20th century, old-school hardware supply shop. Handwritten labels attached to wooden drawers tell you the sizes of pipe fittings, nails, and other small parts you may be searching for in your latest home improvement projects. Even if you don’t think you need anything, a slow stroll through the narrow aisles, peering at the overflowing shelves is a fun way to spend some time. Employees, friendly and helpful, also still write receipts by hand. A few doors down, It’s Bazaar on 21st Street offers up consigned finds that change literally every day. From desks and coffee tables to Fiesta ware or Corningware to vintage clothing, sports

If you’d rather sit down to a more formal meal, walk about a block to Magnolia’s at the Mill. The rustic-yet-refined interior is unmatched, and you’ll find yourself staring upwards at all of the wonderful mill leftovers that hang throughout the space. But the true stars here are the outstanding food and drinks. The restaurant stays true to its “buy local” roots, offering seasonal selections from nearby farms and wineries. Twice each year it plays host to local farmer events to promote local growers. And you will often find local lamb, cheese, beef, chicken, sausage and fresh-picked produce highlighted on the menu at lunch and dinner.

paraphernalia, music and jewelry, you’re bound to find something you must have on its two filled floors. Other interesting stops along the way include Trail’s End Cycling, located right at the western end of the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Trail, providing bicycles and related expert service since 2004; and Twigs, located in a charming old yellow house with a giant, welcoming porch, you’ll find wonderful gifts, jewelry, kitchen and garden items, home décor, and women’s clothing here. No matter where you choose to visit on your day trip to Purcellville, you’ll leave the charming town with a full belly and a carload of interesting gifts for yourself and some lucky family and friends.
