ViSiT iT! This summer, experience the magical world of Cirque Italia—a show like no other. At the very first traveling water circus in the U.S., the extraordinary stage holds 35,000 gallons of water and features a dynamic lid which lifts 35 feet into the air, allowing water to fall like rain from above as fountains dazzle below. This incredible show takes place under a majestic white and blue big top tent which came all the way from Italy. Inside is a theatrical and intimate setup, you just might forget you are under a circus tent!

The show owner and founder, Manuel Rebecchi, has a deep-seeded history in the circus industry. His late aunt, Moira Orfei, ran one of the largest circus shows in Europe. When Manuel came to the States several years ago, he decided that Americans needed to experience a European style show. He wanted to create something special and memorable. He was actually inspired to create the water stage while drinking a bottle of water one day. Mr. Rebecchi knew he would need someone with great talent and vision to make his idea work. He brought in Chante’ DeMoustes, now-chief operating officer and producer, to help make his dreams a reality. The result? Something never before seen in the U.S.—a completely animal-free cirque variety show featuring a giant water tank stage and performers from around the world!

26 SUMMER 2016

ViSiT iT! So what can you expect to see at this remarkably unique show? How about a contortionist who is able to bend her body in ways you would never imagine. How high can he go? You’ll ask yourself “How high can he go,” as an Italian singer stacks chair upon chair and then balances on top of them on his hands. The silly clown, Alex, plunges off the diving board during his acrobatic trampoline excursion, then later there’s an astounding jet ski act. Breathtaking aerial divas fly high in the sky like beautifully colored birds of paradise. All this, plus thrilling high wire feats, twin juggling maniacs and elegant chiffons. Don’t forget you’ll also have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take a picture with a mermaid. So...let your imagination wander...and dive into the magical world of CIRQUE ITALIA. GATHLAND STATE PARK

words by Ty Unglebower

Though you should never go speeding along winding mountain roads, if you did you’d probably miss it. Oh, you might have a vague sense of a structure or two. A sculpture of some kind maybe? You might catch a pavilion in the blur outside of your window, if a group is there having a picnic. But almost as soon as these images registered in your mind, they’d be behind you, as would one of Maryland state parks. It’s not Gambril State Park, though people I know often confuse the name with that of this little gem. It is, however, Gathland State Park, about 136 acres straddling the border of Frederick and Washington Counties. As with most state parks, the land that is Gathland has not always been public land. It was for a time the private mountain estate of

VISIT iT!

VISIT iT! Civil War journalist George Alfred Townsend, who lived there in the latter part of the 19th century. Known as “Gath” (hence the name of the property, and the park today) the former tenant is not buried there, though a burial crypt originally intended for Townsend’s remains can be found there. It is one of several original structures from Townsend’s day still standing. The lodge and main hall from Townsend’s time were rebuilt in the 1950’s and now collectively serve as a museum dedicated to both Townsend, and to artifacts recovered from the nearby Battle of South Mountain. Well-preserved ruins of other original buildings are scattered throughout the park, and can be explored on foot, making for excellent photo opportunities. The 2,200 mile long Appalachian National Scenic Trail runs through the park as well. Hikers may park their vehicles overnight free of charge on the Arnoldstown Road lot. Arguably, however, the most distinct feature of Gathland State Park is the War Correspondents Arch. Townsend, himself a war journalist, had the Arch built in 1896 as a memorial to all journalists and artists killed in war. (Despite certain errors among the lists of names on the monument.) It remained his property until his death in 1914. Today it is a registered national historical monument, maintained by the National Parks Service. Constructed of quarried stone, the memorial is made up of four arches, three smaller ones near the top of the approximately 40 foot structure, and one large arch at ground level. Stone reliefs of horses and faces decorate the walls. The largest decoration is a zinc statue of the Greek God Mercury, the messenger god, and in some traditions the god of writers. Among several journalist names most recently added to the memorial in 2003 were Michael Kelly, the first American Journalist killed in the second Iraq War, and kidnapping and murder victim, Daniel Pearl. Gathland is not among the largest, most well known, or easiest to find state parks in Maryland, or for that matter, even within Frederick County. But for such a small, lesser known place, Gathland provides plenty vistas, history and nature for those who choose to seek it out.

Off to Market We Go Words by Melissa Howes-Vitek

“There ain’t nothin’ in the world that I like better Than bacon ‘n lettuce ‘n home grown tomatoes Up in the mornin’, out in the garden

Get you a ripe one, don’t pick a hard ‘un

Plant ‘em in the spring, eat ‘em in the summer

All winter without ‘em is a culinary bummer

I forget all about the sweatin’ and the diggin’ Every time I go out and pick me a big ‘un

Home grown tomatoes, home grown tomatoes

What would life be like without home grown tomatoes? Only two things that money can’t buy

That’s true love and home grown tomatoes...” “Home Grown Tomatoes”, words and music by Guy Clark.

ViSiT iT!

The first time I heard this song was years ago, as I sat with family and friends, enjoying an evening of music under some Western Maryland stars. The duo playing the tune made popular by 70s singer/songwriter John Denver, enthusiastically sang about those tomatoes with such passion and conviction that I have never been able to eat a tomato in the same way since. Because, like the song says...what WOULD life be like without home grown tomatoes? Although I have been fortunate enough in the past dozen summers to have actually successfully grown my own tomatoes (and peppers, herbs, etc.) I have to disagree with Mr. Clark. Money can indeed buy you some home grown tomatoes, and the farmers that participate in the baker’s dozen of Frederick County Farmer’s Markets are ready to help you with your selections. Now...their tomatoes might not be home grown at your home, but they’re grown at somebody’s home...so let’s not split hairs, shall we? Every year, along with the dozens of tomato varieties (many heirloom that you’ll NEVER see in a supermarket), farmers bring their bounty to share with the hungry masses. Peppers (hot, sweet, green etc.), beans, potatoes, melons, cucumbers...the list goes on. Locally raised beef and poultry, handcrafted jams and fresh baked breads as well as other wonderful local wares make appearances at market’s all across the county. All of it good, farm-fresh, and delish. So next time you have a hankerin’ for a BLT, an ear of buttered corn, or some grass-fed beef, head out to one of the many farmer’s markets or local farm stands for what can only be described as some of the best fresh produce in the state. Now have you heard the song about the watermelon vine? If you see me around, stop me. I’ll sing a few lines for ya’!

GET SOME OF THAT

GOOD JUJU WORDS AND PHOTOS BY MAXANN KELLER

On a sunny Saturday morning, I found myself craving a sweet yet healthy and filling meal to curb the hunger and propel me forward for an afternoon run. Pulling into the rear of Shab Row’s gravel parking lot, I saw the vibrantly colored logo for Good JuJu on the door that lead into a just as colorful cafe adorned with fresh fruit and vegetables ready to be juiced and blended into delicious concoctions. I pulled up a stool and asked the smiling cashier if she would surprise me with one of her favorite smoothies, which soon would become one of my very own as well. As I sipped on a perfectly pink Razzle Dazzle, a blend consisting of agave, raspberries, strawberries, banana, coconut oil, and almond milk, I could taste the fresh, nutritious ingredients filling my tummy and satisfying my taste buds. The best part? Knowing that while slurping my smoothie I was not consuming any refined sugars or unnatural ingredients— an element of the business’ mission that owners Mike and Terri Winder take great pride in. The Winders are far from being new residents to the Shab Row scene. With 11 years and three Shab Row shops already under their

wing—The Frederick Fudge & Ice Cream Co., The Frederick Coffee Company, and the most recent addition Shab Row Tea Emporium— the couple was determined to keep meeting the growing needs and requests of the thriving Shab Row clientele. “We received great feedback from our customers at all three stores and there seemed to be a great need for a healthy juice bar with fresh options that also offer vegan, gluten free, or vegetarian varieties. So here we are,” Mike Winder said of his newest venture. With wishes to bring even more good products and good vibes to the people of Frederick, the Winders opened Good JuJu in May of 2016. Frederick’s newest juice bar specializes in fresh pressed juices, smoothies, salads and other entrees that are vegan, vegetarian, and/or gluten free with nothing less than good vibes in every bite (or sip!) While the first menu items you see are pourable, this juice bar is far from just another smoothie joint. “Our biggest seller for lunch is The Great White Buffalo. It’s a big hit,” Winders said. The Great White Buffalo is the name of the cafe’s vegan wrap, containing cauliflower dressed in hot sauce, crisp romaine and cool, vegan ranch dressing. “We also make great flatbread pizzas made with vegan cheeses and a gluten free crust topped with different fresh vegetables,” Winder added. Pasta salads are a great side, made from ingredients by local pasta boutique—The Pasta Palette on Market Street. Good JuJu’s famous spinach salad is a bed of the nutrientdense green topped with fresh strawberries and tossed in a Blood Orange Vinaigrette from local oil shop, Lebherz Oil & Vinegar Emporium. “While some vegetables are hard to buy local all year round in Frederick and

force us to purchase elsewhere, we try to obtain the majority of our ingredients from local shops and farmers if possible,” Winder said. Although the menu holds a plethora of healthy vegan, gluten free, and vegetarian options, meat eaters are very welcome and encouraged to try the cafe’s different options for all tastebuds. “I am a meat eater,” Winder said. “So I know some may be skeptical but this is a great place to try something new. All of our menu options taste great, so why not give it a shot?” Good JuJu also provides Frederick with natural wheatgrass shots for when you need a boost of nutrients all in one little glass. Their unique vegan chicken salad is made up of marinated, roasted chickpeas and vegenaise. With the majority of their business catering to the Fredericktonian on-the-go, they do have indoor and outdoor seating for guests who wish to stay. “We have a great environment to enjoy tasty food, and everyone is encouraged to relax outside on our back patio” Winder suggested. Good JuJu is located at 300 E 2nd Street in downtown Frederick. Check out their Facebook page for their menu, photos, and more!

CREATE iT!

It only took two hours, a few brushes, and a whole lot of paint for Terri Jackson to realize she was hooked on paint parties. Now, Jackson goes out of her way to attend monthly paint nights at Zi Pani in Frederick, not missing a date since January. Jackson says sessions with Frederick-based Petit Picasso – Canvas Celebrations’ owner and instructor Tina Young are soothing and even therapeutic. Young takes care of everything and offers calm instruction to painters as they work to complete the same design. “For years, I have been in charge of things,” Jackson says. “I am always the one setting up, always the one there early. Always the last one to leave and to bear that stress of making sure everything is perfect… (At these paint nights) you just can go in and breathe. There is no stress. ...It’s a beautiful way to relax and I think that has been what’s hooked me. There is no stress. It’s just the paint and this beautiful camaraderie.” Paint party popularity has been growing in the last few years in Frederick, with several outlets offering a fun night out for kids and adults alike. Ron Layman, instructor at The Faux School’s Canvas and Corks monthly event, says it’s a fun, inexpensive way to decorate your home.

“Each painting has its own story, its own history,” he said. “You create memories with your friends.” Young says she has many recurring clients, who say painting is something different to do together. “It’s an inexpensive way to get together with friends and socialize and do something fun and produce something,” she said. “I’ve also had some people who have been through traumatic things in their life, a divorce, a death or injury and a lot of those people are coming in for (artistic) therapy.” Young, an elementary school art teacher, opened Petit Picasso a few years ago, focusing solely on in-home paint parties for kids. The business quickly evolved to include parties for adults at various Frederick-area venues and private homes. “Each person takes my lessons and takes instruction a little differently, but produces something wonderful and they feel really good,” she said. “I really like how when they leave they are happy and they really feel pleased.” Young and other local art instructors, such as Christine Kenney, who founded the Urbana-based Great Paint Parties several years ago, say truly anyone can attend these paint nights and have success. The paintings are designed to be simple and fun.

“You don’t have to have experience because I break it down,” Young said. “I slow the pace down depending upon the audience, depending upon the client and what they need.” Instructors paint the chosen work before the event, taking copious notes along the way regarding paint mixture combinations, brush sizes for different aspects of the composition and length of time to complete sections. “When I was teaching kids classes, kids have that natural confidence. ‘Hey, I am going to draw a flower.’ Or, ‘Hey, I am going to draw a dragon going over a rainbow,’” Kenney said. “There is not that fear factor” that adults have when doing art. Kenney aims to help people break through the fear and demystify the painting process. Most will leave an event with a sense of accomplishment, and that’s Kenney’s favorite aspect of her job. Jackson keeps her finished canvas paintings hung in her home office. “The (painting) that really has my heart is ‘cardinals in the snow,’” she says. “That was an extraordinary experience. It was my first night with (Young). We were painting cardinals. I was surprised when I stepped back from my painting and saw that the cardinals were not these happy little bubbly birds but very sorrowful. I realized in that relaxed state of painting I had really painted my own grief.” Jackson’s eldest son, Justin, was killed when he was 25 years old, and she said she finds painting to be a therapeutic way to deal with his death. “It was amazing to see when in a different environment like that, working with paint, that the heart can really tell you what’s going on. Tina creates such a welcoming environment that it is really conducive to things coming up in a really safe place.”

Enter Crème de la Crème, which opened a Downtown Frederick location in early June. From handcrafted Italian tableware and home décor products to avant-garde cutlery to tableware, furniture, linens and gifts, this 3,500-square-foot shop has it all, including some seriously cute cheese boards and knives, cocktail napkins and appetizer picks. LET THE GOOD TIMES

Roll

RiDE iT! It’s hard to imagine how such a popular and exciting annual event can get much better, but organizers promise some big changes to this years event. The new and Improved Tour de Frederick and National Clustered Spires High Wheel Race is slated for this August 12–14. The Tour de Frederick, Frederick County’s largest and most popular event for bicyclists of all ages, will be profoundly upgraded and expanded in 2016. The August event includes six rides ranging from an ambling eight-mile history tour of Frederick City lead by historians on bikes, the legendary covered bridge ride, and a challenging but relatively flat 100-mile route. While America’s only high wheel bicycle race, the most popular spectator portion of the weekend, will run from 3–7 p.m. on Saturday.

Getting around via bike will also get easier as the rides on Friday and Saturday will now begin and end at the AOPA Community Center, 296 Bucheimer Road (adjacent the Frederick Airport) instead of the Delaplaine Arts Center as in years past. This will enable riders to access more free parking, and make it easier to ride into and out of Frederick City limits. A finish line party will be held Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., giving riders time to view the high wheel bike championships. Friday night will feature a mesmerizing and engaging talk and multi-media presentation by the legendary, round-the-world high wheel phenom, Joff Summerfield, who

Some of the exciting changes this year include an additional sponsor. The Rotary Club of Carroll Creek joins as co-host with the Boys & Girls Club of Frederick County, which has hosted the first six years of the Tour. The weekend event is a fund-raiser that will benefit both organizations.

RiDE iT! is winging in from England just to participate in this event! He will also be racing in the high wheel event. Held at the AOPA Community Center, tickets for this evening event are separate from the riding components, but very reasonably priced... $12 pre-purchase, or $15 day of, which includes a delicious catered dinner. The high wheel race is on a 0.4 mile loop around downtown Frederick City. During the race, the city park directly in front of City Hall, which is on the race loop, will be turned into a beer garden with locally brewed beers and non-alcoholic beverages and food available. A selection of rare historic antique bicycles will also be on display adjacent the beer garden. So even if you’re not up to peddling your way around Frederick County, this event still has plenty of fun for everyone.
