This past winter, we were treated to above-normal temperatures. I loved that I could sleep with the windows open in February! Spring had us closely measuring rainfall and fearing flood stage. Now... we’re already experiencing near-record high temperatures in Frederick County. That’s what is so great about this region—the seasons change with great drama. Just when you’ve had enough of one, another is just around the corner. With those changing seasons come new opportunities for fun. Summer in Frederick County is when things really get swingin’. Festivals, special events, longer shopping hours, patio dining, and then even more festivals means no one can claim boredom! There quite literally is something for everyone...and usually on the same street. No one gets boxed in! This issue is packed with great ideas for spending these lazy, hazy days of summer. Whether the heat finds you seeking cool shelter in a chill bookstore, sipping wine at a local vineyard, or sitting in the stands cheering at a Keys game, Frederick County is the perfect place to be for the summer.

YOGA ON WATER Photos by Melissa Howes-Vitek
Peter Pan proclaimed that once you’re grown up you can’t come back. Well, Melissa DiVincenzo begs to differ. This enthusiastic yoga and fitness instructor says the best defense against growing up is to play all day! In this case, Play All Day Yoga is Maryland’s first and only floating yoga studio. SUP (Stand Up Paddle) yoga takes your Namaste to an all new level. Melissa’s studio is totally mobile and she offers group and private classes at several local private and public lakes. What better way to enjoy the natural beauty of the Catoctin State Park than while floating in savasana at sunset?
We jumped right in along with six new friends, all with various levels of yoga and SUP experience. We kept our cores tight and our drishti (focal point) focused on fun while floating. Whether you’re a long time yogi or have never stepped foot into a yoga studio, this summer is the perfect time to get your feet wet, embrace your peaceful and adventurous inner child and take your practice to the water.

I was on a mission: to unleash more than 20 years of pent-up diva in one evening. When I petitioned Luigi Crespo, the photographer at Capitol Bombshell, he was more than happy to oblige. You see, Luigi is a full-time boudoir, glamour and pinup portrait photographer, and he knows there is only one cure for Prima Donna Fever: a full-fledged photoshoot complete with glamorous Grace Kelly makeup, gorgeous pin curls, thigh-high stockings and the highest heels I’ve ever worn. In the past couple of years, I’ve undergone a slew of personal and professional changes that have both boosted and shattered my confidence. I changed careers, got engaged and lost 100 pounds— all of which changed how I saw myself. As I thought about my transformation into a boudoir butterfly, I also thought of how these changes would look in front of all of Frederick. Needless to say, I saw this as an opportunity to change my perspective on myself and embrace the changes in my life to become the diva I always wanted to be. Capitol Bombshell’s sessions actually start with emails back and forth. From the time you book your session, they are in contact with you about what ideas you have in regards to poses, outfits and backdrops for your photos. I had a few vague ideas and Luigi took it from there, he told me what to bring and directed me to the website for everything else. When I arrived at the studio, I was way more nervous than I thought I would be. Everyone who knows me knows that I do NOT shy away from a camera lense; my extensive modeling portfolio includes goofy faces next to giant pizza slices and awkward poses with signs. However, I’ve never had professional photos taken, other than my engagement photos last summer; the idea of having, as Luigi would say, “sensual” photos taken made me a little anxious.
27
Photos by Capitol Bombshell
All that being said, once I met Luigi in person and saw his set, I began to feel more and more comfortable. He assured me that most of his clients have no previous modeling experience, which I would never have guessed from the ravishing ladies on his website. He also generously offered me some “liquid encouragement,” and I opted for a glass of white wine. We started by going over what I brought and then he mentioned his ideas. Luigi told me more about his setup at the studio—how he modeled his new luxe-boudoir set after a luxury hotel suite and how the fluidity of his setup lets him take pictures at any angle. He spoke about the artwork and furniture he has in his set, all of which are locally sourced. The artwork is actually leased from BeDotGallery, that supports five local artists from around Frederick, and you can add the works to your bill if one strikes your fancy. He relishes being able to support local art with his business.
28
I got the Sweetheart Package, which includes one makeup look and two outfits. (Although, I did get a special light-pinup session with it too, to get a full sampling of his photography.) By outfits, he means “wardrobe changes” and he will tell you how to layer your clothes to maximize your time in his studio. He has a lot of outfits to choose from: faux-fur vests to vintage lingerie and jewelry. He told me to go through the rack and pick out whatever I liked and then put them on in the changing room. My hair and makeup was done by Alice Ness, a stylist at Studio 509 Salon and Spa downtown. She is also a long-time resident of Downtown Frederick and a graduate of The Temple, as well as an internationally published editorial stylist and one of Capitol Bombshell’s main stylists. I was in her chair for about an hour, but it really felt like two minutes. Alice is hilarious and the time flew by! Afterwards, I definitely felt like a movie star (and promptly took a selfie in the changing room!)
29
Also, Alice watched the photo shoot from the sidelines and made sure my hair was perfect and there was no lipstick on my teeth throughout the shoot. I got to try all three kinds of photos that Luigi offers at his studio: Classic Pin-up, Soft Glamour, and Boudoir. In our classic pin-up session, I got to wear an apron and make a pie—no baking skills required! In the soft glamour session, I wore a green dress that I brought and he helped me find the perfect Vanity Fair poses. Then, the boudoir session--the most popular style of photography at Capitol Bombshell. I got a few different poses, we did some implied nude shots and some poses in lingerie. (The idea of “implied nudes” would have made me clutch my pearls before, but I felt more dauntless with every shot!) Once I saw the proofs, I was blown away! The girl in the photos looked like me, but more empowered and self-assured. These pictures came to represent exactly what I am capable of, even after my life changes—self-love and being comfortable in my own skin. All in all, I was absolutely thrilled with the photo shoot and had a blast working with Luigi and Alice. I left feeling confident and proud of myself--something that I still strut around town with. SERENDIPITY When we heard that a real, bona-fide general store, was at last open around the corner, we all clamored out of the office and scampered on over to Serendipity Market & More. Upon arrival, we were greeted by gorgeous spreads of fresh, local produce neatly arranged in baskets; organic snacks and treats; and everyday grocery items like band-aids, wrapping paper and our (completely unbiased) favorite, Old Bay! However, the greatest part of our visit was hearing about all of their ideas for the future. We saw their big, beautiful deli counter and were told that they will make sandwiches, soups and salads for lunchtime and pre-made dinners for those of us who just want one (or seven) nights off from cooking. They’re also going to launch an online ordering process so you can order groceries from work and then swing by to pick them up on your way home. Our great tour guide even told us about an art gallery that will open in the back of the store to support our amazing local art scene. They already have a few applicants for their gallery! Serendipity isn’t even close to being done with their ideas, and as of right now, they are top secret, BUT, we’ll tell you to keep your eyes peeled because it’s going to be incredible.

Ever wonder how actors make punches and sword fights look so realistic? What about the process to get involved in podcasting? Also, how do makeup artists create realistic zombies? Workshops to answer these questions, and much more, are coming to Frederick this summer, thanks to New Spire Arts, an organization dedicated to engaging the community and bringing performing arts education and programming to the area. “We hope that what we are going to do education wise is bring creative development and classes that don’t already exist here,” says Elizabeth Lucas, producing artistic director. “We are working at it from a lot of angles. We want to serve all ages. We want to serve the widest range of what it means to be in the performing arts from the media end to the traditional performing arts. For this summer, we wanted a ‘taster’s menu’ of sorts—to try some things out and see what people responded to...We are going to start building year round programs from there, depending on what people are most excited about.” Other program offerings, which range in age from young children to adults, include Intro to Screenwriting, Hooked on Drums, Song & Sign, YouTube 101, Stop Motion Film and Intro to Puppetry. The organization began as the idea of area developer and philanthropist Marvin Ausherman. Buying the sites of the former Cultural Arts Center on Market and Patrick streets and the Board of Education building on East Church Street several years ago, the Ausherman Family Foundation officially started New Spire Arts in 2016 through a catalyzing grant. The two venues will become available to the public progressively. Summer programs begin on the first floor of the East Church Street facility, known as New Spire Spaces, in June. The group spent the spring knocking down walls and finishing up renovations to create four studios and a media suite. Designs have been approved for the former Cultural Arts Center in its reincarnation as a 200 to 300 seat theater space for local organizations. Lucas anticipates the site to be ready in a year. Plans also include putting in a casual stage and arts hub downstairs. “We hope [the amphitheater] will be a performing arts resource for everybody in the county to use,” Lucas says.
43
As one area is finished, they aim to start work on another aspect of the two facilities. “It’s going to take some time getting everything online but that gives us time to build our audience and build our programming,” she says. While not a producing organization, they hope to be a resource to all of the performing arts organizations in the county and one day serve as a presenter for music, theatre and dance groups. “We hope all those organizations that are already here will rent from us or co-produce with us or, in some way, let us help them magnify their message,” Lucas says. A veteran of the stage and screen, Lucas joined the organization in September and was charged with overseeing the development of the sites. “I love the start up field,” she says. “I love the idea of starting from scratch on something and getting to really invent the mold. I feel like Frederick is just ripe for this kind of resource.” Julian Lazarus, New Spire Arts’ director of education, served as a Frederick County Public Schools drama teacher for more than a decade and helped to launch the Science Technology Engineering Art and Math (STEAM) Initiative. While putting together this summer’s programming, he aimed to fill niches that don’t currently exist in our area. “I really wanted to go beyond some of the normal offerings,” he says. “We don’t overlap programming [with other arts centers]... I just wanted to create something new and a little bit different than what has traditionally been offered in our area.” He is excited about the artists coming in to teach over the summer including Kwame Opare, an internationally recognized choreographer and Jessica Redish, a Helen Hayes Award winning choreographer. “We have amazing artists coming into our programs,” Lazarus says, “we are working with a lot of local artists but we also have brought in some really stellar award winning people.” Lucas encourages people to check out their upcoming summer program offerings. “This will be a great opportunity for [folks] to try something new,” she says. “All of our classes this summer are geared toward all levels, all ages. If there is something they are thinking they want to try, there is a very low barrier of entry. Everything is pretty short...By coming and checking things out, they are going to be telling us what they are interested in and we are at that place right now where we can tailor to what people want and need.”

PARKING, PUPS AND DINOS So, you’re seeing a giant green dinosaur... If you’re enjoying an adult beverage on the rooftop patio at Brewer’s Alley, don’t worry. You haven’t been over-served. You’ve simply for a front-row view of Frederick’s latest installment of public art! By unanimous vote of the city’s Historic Preservation Commission, Frederick artist Goodloe Byron was allowed to put his fingerprints and paints all over the the west side of the city’s Church Street parking garage, as part of an overall alleyway improvement effort by the Downtown Frederick Partnership. The 150-foot long by 30-foot high mural whimsically pays homage to the Astrodon johnstoni dinosaur. Apparently the State of Maryland adopted that as its official dinosaur in 1998. The Astrodon johnstoni is said to have lived in Maryland 95 million to 130 million years ago. Who knew? Now YOU do!

PEAK SNEAKS If you meander a little ways up Carroll Street from the creek in downtown, you’ll stumble upon a unique shoe store called Peak Sneaks. We certainly never heard of a place where you could buy, sell, and trade your new and used sneakers before, but we were so glad to have poked our heads in! Their store is a rainbow of colors; with sneakers covering their walls and even hanging from their ceiling! They have an incredible collection of brand-new sneakers, all pristinely wrapped, and a separate room full of gently used sneakers, most of them collectibles and rare shoes. In addition to sneakers, they also have a selection of specialty clothing, autographed merchandise and other basketball memorabilia. However, the focal point of the store, we thought, was their Key Master arcade game where you could WIN sneakers! (Apparently, when we visited, nine people had already won a pair of sneakers from the game.) If you don’t see what you want, or you want a sweet pair of PUMPS, they can order sneakers for you too! Don’t worry, we already asked if they could order heelys for adults, and they definitely can. So, if you see a brigade of ridiculously happy ladies rolling up Market Street, you’ll know where they got those sweet kicks.

The first time I ever set foot on that black-and-white checkered tile floor of Wonder Book and Video on the Golden Mile, I was just a kid. You could still find Super Nintendo cartridges for sale. Actually, though you might have to look harder, and wait longer for those now, you might still find one for sale on any given day. Just like you can find Playstation One games, vinyl records, VHS movies, CDs, cassettes, and even 8 tracks for sale, as well as DVDs and blu-rays to rent over on the video side. Yes, a walk-in video rental establishment, there are still a few left in the world! On the book side, where I usually spend all of my visits, you’ll obviously find books, but better than that, they have used books—some obscure or very old. You’ll see shelf after shelf of used books on dozens of subjects. At times, those subjects are loosely defined, but there is a charming organization to the volumes that make up this classic Frederick shop. Little has changed at Wonder Book since my first visit. The floor plan has shifted a bit here and there over the years, the organization has improved to some degree. However, gone is the charming disaster of book stacks in every aisle and the free-for-all pile of art prints that threatened to collapse and bury you as you browsed. Yet, plenty has remained marvelously unchanged within those walls, like the sign on the door that greets visitors with the message, “FREE OLD BOOK SMELL,” and it’s not a lie. It permeates every corner of the shop: that mix of glue, ink, yellowing pages, a bit of dust and the combination of aromas from all the previous homes of the books—now waiting to be explored by customers. You can even smell that fragrance outside the store, where the table of last-chance bargain books wait during business hours. Should Wonder Book ever vacate the space, (perish the thought!) I imagine the smell of books would linger on for years afterward.

Almost every inch of wall space is covered with an art print, an old calendar, an ancient post card or a program from the Kennedy Center’s 1984 season. More than a few non-paper, non-book, non-video knickknacks are even to be found on sale—some of which may have been lurking since that day of my first visit. Even the walls of the bathroom are aligned with prints, sheet music, photographs and cards, all in plastic sleeves, waiting to be removed and purchased. (I know of no other bathroom wherein a photo of Barry Goldwater might greet someone. But, I found one on my most recent visit as of this writing.) Based on years of visiting and assessing the shelves, I’d conclude that fantasy and science fiction paperbacks make up the single largest percentage of volumes to be found at Wonder Book. Entire shelves and aisles are devoted to sci-fi books that date back to the 1960s. (After that, I’d say it’s paperback romances that cover the most shelf space, though I have no official confirmation of this.) Rare, collectible, and older volumes in several genres are also for sale, kept locked behind glass cases, with which the staff must assist interested patrons. You’ll also find plenty of oddities that are not for sale on the shelves. Specifically, papers that have been left in the books, which is half the fun of thumbing through the volumes. I’ve found an unused ticket for the first ever Capitals Game, a business card with a phone number of only five digits, and, believe it or not, a photo of someone I went to highschool with. Yoshida Kenko, a 14th Century Japanese monk wrote, “To sit alone in the lamplight with a book spread out before you, and hold intimate converse with men of unseen generations—such is a pleasure beyond compare.” Something tells me he would have loved visiting Wonder Book and Video on a regular basis.

SLIDE IN TO FUN A 40-foot-tall wooden slide just might be what some dreams are made of. Built in 1950 by volunteers from local churches, this big wooden slide has provided hours of low-tech, highenergy entertainment for kids of all ages for generations. A Frederick County hidden gem, the Big Slide is central to the park and picnic area at Rocky Ridge Municipal Park, but is actually owned and maintained by Mt. Tabor Church. Clear signage warns that everyone who dares scale the structure, climb into one of the provided burlap sacks, then hurl themselves down the nearly 100-foot long slide, does so at his own risk. Sign. Us. Up! Adventurous souls are warmly greeted by a cushy pile of sawdust at the end of each speedy ride. Don’t let this summer pass without planning a perfectly unplugged play date with a picnic lunch in a pavilion. Now say that fast five times!

WINE AND DINE

Imagine: Georgian architecture, European grandeur, local folklore revolving around Edgar Allen Poe, award-winning lavender gin harvested from lavender fields on-site, bacon, egg and cheese casserole alongside stuffed French toast and sweeping, vast views of 135 acres of Frederick County countryside. Needless to say, an overnight stay at Springfield Manor Winery & Distillery is an experience out of a storybook. The manor was built around 1775 by James Johnson, who settled on the land while founding Catoctin Mountain Furnace with his brother, Thomas Johnson. Thomas would later become the first governor of Maryland. It goes without saying that Springfield Manor is rich in history and legend. Wealthy from his success at Catoctin Mountain Furnace, which served as a major supplier of iron in the region during the 18th century, James Johnson crafted his home to reflect his prominence. The grand stone home is situated on a rise of the Catoctin Mountains and offers panoramic views of corn and lavender fields and the artesian springs, which give the home its name. Owners Amie and John St. Angelo purchased Springfield Manor and its farmland in 2004 and since have established a distillery and winery on the property. “We have amazing naturally filtered fresh limestone spring water” at the estate which “make our distilled spirits award winning,” explained Amie St. Angelo. “The winery produces 10 award-winning wines on site including big dry reds, stainless Chardonnay, a beautiful rosé and a delightful sparking as well as four semi-sweet wines. The distillery produces rums, whiskey, vodka, bourbon, and lavender gin from our expansive lavender field.”

All overnight stays at the manor offer complimentary wine and spirit tastings in a European styled tasting room, which is situated in the lower level of the restored bank barn. “The manor and grounds are expansive—it is a true country estate. There are eight suites, each with a private marble bath. It is a very different vibe from an in town B&B. We back to Cunningham Falls State Park, so you can literally hike the mountains for miles,” said St. Angelo. “You can meander along our streams and see abundant flora & fauna and guests can walk up to the cornfield to see first hand where we grow the corn to craft our bourbon and rye whiskeys.” An overnight stay in one of the guest suites is a delight for the senses with high ceilings and original 18th century trims, moulding, floors and bookcases. The elegant rooms are adorned with heirloom furnishings that St. Angelo found at estate sales in New Jersey, New York and locally. The dark warm wood beds welcome guests to relax, and the modern amenities, including marble spa showers, are indulgent. The Edgar suite is named for renowned author and Baltimore resident Edgar Allen Poe who, according to historical records, is said to have visited the manor in 1835, which is the year he was married. Local legend states that he visited the manor while on his honeymoon and engraved his initials, “A. Poe,” into the glass windowpane. (Perhaps with his wedding ring?) A full country breakfast awaits guests each morning in the breakfast room, reminiscent of a European country inn, featuring two traditional bread ovens. The delectable menu varies and features bacon, egg and cheese casserole, yogurt parfait with berries, freshly baked muffins, stuffed French toast, pancakes, eggs, bacon, and sausage. Coffee, tea and juice are also included. Outside, off the breakfast room, there are beautiful porches, patios and terraces. “We have romantic fire pits and Adirondack chairs for reading and relaxing,” said St. Angelo. The outdoor spaces are often used for special events such as sign paintings, succulent plantings, Peruvian chicken dinner nights, taco dinner nights, star gazing parties and concerts. “Springfield Manor is a true destination,” said St. Angelo, “Come relax, rekindle and restore. Come for the wine, stay for the experience.”
