As I write this, the sun is shining and temperatures have finally reached the melting point. The fluffy white stuff is on its way out and spring is itching to reveal itself. It's only a matter of time before daffodils are pushing through the surface, robins are gathering worms and the Catoctin Mountains are flush with a fresh green glow. What better time to start planning that next big adventure? Frederick County has anything and everything one can imagine to help break that cabin fever. Perhaps joining a new club or organization that introduces local writers or supports charity is the perfect fit. Or maybe you need a little push continuing that "get fit" resolution. How about a weekend drive through the county and beyond to meet the cast of characters that can be found at diners and cafes off the beaten path. Whatever you're looking for...Frederick is full of great options for all of it. So start putting away the winter gear and get ready to enjoy everything this amazing area has to offer. Let’s talk Kittiwat, the fantastic new Thai restaurant opened recently near the Westview area of Frederick. This super yummy joint is my latest obsession, and is focused on serving authentic Thai dishes with a modern twist.

With clean, contemporary design and a menu that excites but doesn’t overwhelm, Kittiwat sticks to traditional Thai fare with an updated feel. There’s no need to be nervous about branching out from the “safest” Thai dish of all, Pad Thai. But if you’re ready to baby step into more authentic flavor, the menu gently suggests asking for it in the traditional manner, with dried shrimp added to the mix. Do that... please. It adds an additional layer of flavor to the dish, without an overt fishiness. Allow the super friendly, helpful staff to guide you through questions on unfamiliar dishes and flavors. They’ll lead you through the menu, assuring that you enjoy your experience. Interested in giving curries a try? Thai curries are made from pastes using different fresh herbs and spices as their base. Red/Panang start with sweetness, then delve into spice, then salt, while green lead the way with a spicier kick, then hints of sweetness, then salt. WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

SAVOR iT! At Kittiwat, traditional curry pastes are flavored and seasoned to give each its own unique essence. Says owner Kittiwat Chukkrabutr, “If it says it’s spicy, it’s spicy!” Don’t doubt that, and be sure to have a posh Thai iced tea (complete with frozen tea cubes so as not to dilute your drink) at the ready to temper the heat. A recent transplant from Manhattan, Chukkrabutr is eager to join the Frederick restaurant scene. You’re likely to see him at the restaurant, working seven days a week in whatever role is necessary. Though Kittiwat is his first restaurant, he has worked in Thai restaurants throughout his career, starting as a dishwasher, then working his way up through the ranks. Kittiwat’s menu is manageable, with the goal being to gradually introduce Frederick to the real flavors of Thailand. The kitchen staff all hails from Thailand, representing each area of the country, for a true mix of flavors. All of the dishes, from starters to desserts, are made from scratch. “Everything is the way we would do for ourselves,” Chukkrabutr said. Each month, you’ll find specials featuring one appetizer and one main dish on the menu, with the current season in mind. The time these dishes spend on the menu is fleeting, so don’t hesitate.

SAVOR iT! Occasionally, when response is great, special dishes may be added to the regular menu, such as Ka Prow Kai Sub. This fresh take on traditional Thai Chicken with Basil is a bit more sophisticated with a perfectly fried egg topping the ground, chopped chicken. Be sure to break the yolk of the fried egg on top for a luscious addition to the dish. Want to get your drink on? You’ll need to hang tight for just a wee bit longer, as Kittiwat’s liquor license is pending, but expected to pass this spring. Chukkrabutr is ready to experiment with putting his own Thai twist on popular cocktails. If the food is any indication, I can’t wait to see what fantastic flavor combos are up his sleeve. What better way to savor my favorite curry puffs and Panang curry with shrimp, than with a custom cocktail at the ready to soothe the spice. I’m ready, and you should be, too! Not that long ago the name Rotary was something I only vaguely recognized. It was a club for retired people, right? I was so wrong.

As a newly minted 30-something living in Frederick, my goals have shifted from what they were in my 20s. I want to live a life that matters, that gives back more than it takes. And I have found my “home” in Rotary. Rotary is a service organization that seeks to “bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.” That seemed a fairly lofty goal, but then I went to a meeting and learned more. And I quickly realized these Rotarians weren't kidding around. Rotary is probably best known for its efforts to help eradicate polio. Rotary, along with its partners, has helped to reduce polio cases by 99 percent worldwide since the first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. Since Rotary began the PolioPlus program in 1985, Rotarians have contributed funds on top of thousands of volunteer hours, leading to the inoculation of more than 2 billion children worldwide.

On the local level, Frederick County’s Rotary clubs have worked on very large projects around town such as the Community Bridge, giving the Baker Park Bandshell a facelift, and, most recently, raising funds for 80 murals to be painted and installed in the pediatric unit at Frederick Memorial Hospital. The clubs also provide countless community grants to nonprofits such as Heartly House, the Mental Health Association and the YMCA. But big projects aren’t the only way that Rotary gives back. On any given day, you will find Rotarians volunteering in the community in smaller ways as well. From starting a running club at Lincoln Elementary School to passing out turkeys during the holidays, the members of our local Frederick clubs are selfless with their time, their talents and their giving. You see their fundraising efforts in the Leprechaun Luau and at Frederick’s Oktoberfest. Money raised at these fun events goes to fund grants and big projects. (So feel free to buy an extra drink or two at these events, OK?) While giving locally is a huge part of what Rotary does, the international component is equally as important. Rotary clubs in Frederick sponsor water well projects in Honduras and Kenya. In Cambodia, clubs sponsor a school for children to have a safe space to continue their education even after the school day is over. There are also sponsored projects in South Africa and Nicaragua. Simply stated: Frederick’s Rotary groups make a big difference. The “Rotary Four Way Test” is a strong testament to what its members bring to the community: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Does it promote goodwill and better friendship? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? With 1.2 million members worldwide, Rotary is a movement to bring understanding, kindness, and compassion to everyone. It's a way to give back locally, nationally, and globally. It's a way to band together, create a plan, and make a positive impact. THEATRE, REVIVED Words by Ty Unglebower It’s a simple concept: find the obscure, forgotten or ignored in musical theater and stage a production of it. That is at the core of Being Revived, a musical theater company in Frederick.

Most community theaters provide a steady offering of such classics as “Annie,” “Anything Goes,” “The Music Man,” “Oklahoma” or “Grease.” Such shows are well loved, but also well known and well traveled. While the folks at Being Revived acknowledge many reasons for staging such standards (making fast money, name recognition, an established mood that is easy to recreate), exploring the depths of something new and exciting and breathing life into it for the first time are not among such reasons. Which is why Being Revived has staged such musicals as “It’s a Bird It’s a Plane It’s Superman!,” “Lucky Stiff” and “Reefer Madness.” These are not exactly old stand-bys of musical theater, but rather shows that the company feels deserve an audience, at least one more time. Maybe such productions entertain a few people and maybe not, but at least these obscurities have a second chance. (In some cases, a first chance.) Drama, comedy, memorable tunes, vivid characters: other than obscurity of source material, these are some of the hallmarks of a Being Revived production. So is a certain minimalist quality. Productions, however long forgotten, that require intricate choreography or elaborate sets don’t usually find a home at Being Revived; budgets and space tend to preclude them for now.

For similar reasons, large orchestras are avoided in favor of single piano accompaniment, sometimes with another instrument or two. This approach enhances rather than detracts from the overall mission of Being Revived. “For me, this helps focus the ears more on what the composer wrote,” says artistic director David Norman. According to Norman, initial audience response to the forgotten offerings of Being Revived has been much better than even he expected it to be. Though getting folks to come see an unknown musical can be a challenge at first, once the productions are over the company often hears audience members saying such things as, “Why haven’t I heard of this show before? It’s great.” To Norman and the rest of the folks at Being Revived, there can be no greater compliment. But if there are so many great musicals collecting dust in back catalogs all over the theater world, why do so few companies mount productions of them? Norman and others involved in the “lost musical” experiment think it has a lot to do with risk aversion; the fear that audiences won’t pay money to see something they don’t already know and love. Norman understands the risk, but opts to take it anyway with the company’s productions. That isn’t to say that there is no fame at all attached to the projects. Certain names may act as a draw for audiences in the future, even if the titles do not. Even the great Cole Porter wrote shows that are largely forgotten today, and Being Revived hopes to work out a production of some of these shows in the near future. “Birds of Paradise,” their April show, is written by Winnie Holzman, one of the writers of the perennial Broadway smash hit, “Wicked.” A story of a group of community theater actors struggling to put together a musical, the show has many parallels with the real-life story of Being Revived.

There are many more exciting possibilities and plans for future productions, though for now, those must be kept under wraps until closer to show time. Being Revived performs most of its shows in the Performing Arts Factory on South Jefferson Street, though it has also appeared both in Frederick Community College’s Jack B. Kussmaul theater and the college’s new Studio Theatre. Casts are usually selected by way of auditions that are open to anyone who is interested in being a part of musical theater in Frederick. “Actors are hungry for something to challenge them,” says the company’s website, “and audiences are hungry for something fun and entertaining.” If you happened to share either or both such hungers, it might be time to introduce yourself and your passion to the folks at Being Revived. Words by Rosa Garcia Frederick loves outdoor concerts in the summertime. No matter the genre, we come out in droves to relax, dance, socialize or just wind down from our busy day. That’s why it’s no surprise that when Downtown Frederick Partnership asked us to vote for our city to win $25,000 to help produce an outdoor concert series, we delivered.

That’s right, because of your votes, Frederick became a finalist in the Levitt AMP [Your City] Grant Awards and was named one of 10 cities across the country to be awarded funds from Levitt Pavilions. The nonprofit’s mission is to bring the performing arts to the masses for free. Levitt helps create community gathering places out of once undesirable spaces with its signature music pavilions. As a result, hundreds of concerts are performed annually in once abandoned parks and undeveloped properties in large cities such as Houston, Los Angeles and Memphis. This year, Levitt’s mission has expanded to include small and mid-size cities and it isn’t so much about revitalization as it is about bringing people together. Levitt AMP’s specific goals are to amplify community pride and a city’s unique WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

HEAR iT! character, enriching lives through free live music and illustrating the importance of public places (AMP). “Frederick was a good fit for the Levitt AMP grant. We met the eligibility requirements nicely as a city that regularly plans outdoor concerts and events featuring multiple genres of music,” said Kara Norman, executive director of Downtown Frederick Partnership. What does this mean for Frederick? Ten more concerts, to start. Keep your Tuesday evenings free because starting June 16, and through August 18, music will be firing up downtown beginning at 7 p.m. These concerts will be different from the Alive@Five happy hour events (which will continue as scheduled). These Tuesday concerts will be free to the public and family friendly. “There is a great deal of popularity around the musical events held in Frederick city,” added Norman. “This will have broad appeal during the summer months. There’s no beer or wine, making it great for families.” Expect a diverse line-up this summer. Downtown Frederick Partnership’s wish list of music genres include Americana, Jazz, Rock, Blue Grass, Reggae, Blues, Funk, Zydeco and more. Concerts are expected to last about an hour and will be held in the Weinberg Center in the event of rain. Greg Forsythe and Andy Rogers had a grand plan: to create the area’s best burgers and finest wings, serve them fresh and hot, and as quickly as possible. They’ve put their plan into action via Rex’s Downtown Grill, newly opened on the corner of Maxwell Alley and West Patrick Street.The city’s newest eatery features wings and tenders, burgers (full size and sliders), hot sandwiches, and big salads, plus a bevy of sides including fries (regular or sweet potato), cole slaw and mac and cheese. I’m not judging, but perhaps your energy would be better spent in a local adult sports league. Gaining popularity among young professionals, Frederick Social Sports started in 2011 offering dodgeball and now counts 2,000 men and women as participants in a variety of sports, year-round. “We are expanding faster than we imagined,” co-owner Michelle Salaum said. “Not only can players choose to participate in dodgeball, but we also have teams for twohand touch football, volleyball, corn hole, basketball, softball and kickball.” Each sport is officiated by professional referees and scores are meticulously kept and recorded online. Looking to unleash your inner athlete? There is a competitive division. “None of our leagues are intimidating, but if you played a sport in college and want to get back into it, then the competitive league is for you,” Salaum said. Fully living up to their name, Frederick Social Sports has two big bar crawls downtown during the year, one coming up during St. Patrick’s Day and the other on Halloween. There’s also an annual picnic in the summer and team members regularly get together for games of beer pong. Co-ed basketball will be opening up for registration in April, so say good-bye to the kiddie hoop and hello to the big leagues. Not sure yet if joining a league is right for you? Don’t toss out the idea. Frederick County Recreation’s drop-in program offers basketball, volleyball, martial arts and more for only $2 per day. Equipment is provided; just bring yourself. Games are organized for all ages, ranging from 18 to 40 and older.

In small towns, you’ll often find a cast of characters associated with local restaurants that can match the items on the menu. Should you be traveling through small towns at mealtime, the refreshing atmosphere of a locally owned restaurant can give you more than just sustenance.

In the interest of entertainment, we have sought out these types of places and rarely have we been disappointed, in terms of both food and those who prepare it and serve it. Along with the colorful clientele, this altogether makes for a carousel of fun. A good sampling of what we are talking about comes during a visit to two of our favorites: Betty’s Restaurant in Shepherdstown, W.Va.; and Hatchers in Amelia Courthouse, Va. One fine day, we spotted Betty’s Restaurant on the main street of Shepherdstown and decided to give it a try. We walked in and were met by a server. “Are you Betty?” I asked. She immediately turned to show the back of her shirt, emblazoned with the words, “No, I’m not Betty.” As Heather, the manager with the offbeat shirt, seated us at one of the booths, we began to look around. A sign on the counter read, “Complaint Department…” with an arrow pointing to the front door, “200 miles.” Below the complaint sign was another, “If you are grouchy, irritable or just plain mean, there will be a $10 surcharge for putting up with you.” Finally above the counter on the wall: “You don’t have to be crazy to work here. We train you.” While scanning the menu, we noticed a toy train rolling along a set of tracks near the ceiling. The restaurant serves breakfast all day long, with sandwiches and entrees referred to on the menu as “platters” of beef, chicken or seafood and a number of sides and beverages. Any of the several appetizers (deep-fried dill pickles or boneless chicken wings, for example) are priced at less than $6. Platters and other dishes were also pleasantly priced. In the course of conversational exchanges with “I’m not Betty,” we asked what our server would recommend on the menu.

“I’m not Betty” smiled and swept her hand across the menu and the interior of the restaurant and replied, “Anything you like.” We decided on a Hometown Breakfast: scrambled eggs, sausage and toast. The hot meals came out promptly, along with periodic banter. And we weren’t disappointed (by the meals or by the chatting). On a later visit we learned from another server, Brenda (she’s not Betty either), that the college students from Shepherd University prefer the Country Skillet. So, we gave it a try. It came in a bowl with gravy, eggs, cheese and home fries in layers and a few biscuits on the side. As we dipped into the bowl, our taste buds agreed with those of the students. We instantly adopted the dish as one of our favorites. The ample dosage of calories was more than we could handle, but that didn’t detract from the satisfying flavor. Brenda indicated that crab cakes were a favorite of the older crowd. One customer told us he only orders the crab cakes, as they’re the best he’s eaten. Another customer prefers Betty’s grilled cheese sandwich and french fries, the best she’s ever had. We poached a fry or two off the plate of one of our luncheon guests and confirmed her choice. They were fresh and greaseless. Betty Osbourne opened the restaurant in 1959 and owned it continuously for 42 years. Regina and Howard Wines, Jr., bought the place on Feb. 1, 2001. Their daughter, Heather Renaud, manages it now. The Wines thought about changing the name, but recognized it as an institution and so kept it as Betty’s. And the original owner is given credit with humor and a plaque bearing her picture on the wall near the entrance. An autographed photo of Tamara Tunie, an actor on “Law and Order” hangs above the counter, as “she came in during the art festival last year,” Brenda told us. Both times we left the restaurant; we felt we had made new friends in a perky atmosphere. For sure we had no reason to drive the 200 miles to lodge a complaint. During another road trip through Virginia, we traveled down the Patrick Henry Highway (Route 360) on our way to Appomattox, when our route took us through the small town of Amelia Courthouse (population 1,100) at lunchtime.

Looking for where the locals hang out, we sped past the fast food joints and made our way to Hatcher’s Dining and Catering. It was readily apparent that we were in the right place. A friendly waitress welcomed us and explained the specials and local favorites. In the background was the distinctive voice of owner Sylvia Hatcher, cooking up a storm while maintaining a steady stream of friendly banter with customers. "Hey Pappy, do you want some buttermilk?" "No, I don't want no buttermilk!", came the reply. Later, we found out why. Seems that Sylvia's buttermilk is a concoction of buttermilk, ex-lax and chitlin juice! "If yo're feeling poorly, this will set you straight", said Sylvia. Leroy and Sylvia Hatcher opened for business in 2005. Breakfast and lunch is served 6 days a week; Hatcher's has catered weddings, graduations, reunions, etc. as far away as Atlanta, Georgia and Virginia Beach. When you hire Hatcher's for your catered event, expect to be fed but also to be entertained, Sylvia loves to interact with her customers. Everything is homemade, from the hush puppies and fried chicken liver to the North Carolina barbecue (Sylvia grew up near Durham, NC.) We were tempted to try the local favorite, pork chops and gravy, but we decided to go "light". Joe had the barbecue and I had the soup du jour, excellent. Amelia Courthouse is a rural community that at one time was famous for minerals, like Amazonite. Employment opportunities have been scarce and longtime residents live a simple life. As busy as she is, she finds time before work to lead 11 residents in a work-out routine to promote good health. Sylvia also has been known to prepare individual meals for those with special dietary requirements. After our pleasant visit, we asked our waitress for directions to the main road that would lead us to Appomattox. We were told to make a right out of the parking lot, “then when you come to a fork in the road, go either way; you’ll get there.”
