and so it is said…

Nothing lifts my spirits like witnessing a kid just being a kid. (Well let's be honest; first chocolate, then kids.) The pure wonder and excitement in things that seem old news to us (the adults) can capture kids and take them to some magical place. Hearing my 5-year-old nephew exclaim upon seeing his first rainbow, “I’ve waited my whole life for this!” And watching my 3-year-old niece nearly buckle from excitement as she was about to meet Cinderella, really made me long for the time where inhibitions were low and expectations for adventure were high. Kids look to the grown-ups around them to care for them and to give them what they need, which allows them to experience that free spirited existence. But as a grown-up, who’s in charge of our well-being? With all the responsibilities of being an adult, we often forget to nurture that “inner child” that’s trying to get out. So instead of making another list of new years resolutions (you’ll just feel bad that you didn’t keep them anyway) resolve to be good to yourself. Whether that means getting lost in a good book, perhaps one you enjoyed as a child (my husband is reading “Peter Pan” as we speak), having a nice meal at the restaurant you’ve been wanting to try, or volunteering for an organization that is close to your heart, make the time to really be good…to you.

If you’ve ever decided to take a weekend road trip from Frederick over to West Virginia via Md. Route 340 or down to Leesburg by way of Point of Rocks, chances are good you’ve had the opportunity to experience the delicious offerings of the Catoctin Popcorn Company.

The company’s roadside stands have been making weary travelers’ days since the business was launched as Catoctin Kettle Corn in 2001. You can still find the weekend stands churning out the popped-up goodness along the roadside, but serious popcorn lovers can visit most days of the week, too, at a retail location in Frederick. The storefront version of the popcorn company is the stuff sweet and salty dreams are made of. You can smell the goodness before you even open the door. Once inside, you indulge in a few samples set out for visitors while you attempt to narrow down your selections for purchase. The shelves are filled with the kettle corn that helped the business make a name for itself, as well as a host of other popcorn styles. You can find everything from a bag of savory jalapeño white cheddar, to a sack filled with milk chocolate-drizzled peanut butter clusters.

And plenty of caramel corn! Personally, I am a caramel corn traditionalist and I literally cannot get my fill of Catoctin Popcorn’s version of the treat. I have to admit, I also enjoy the nontraditional takes on it, too, though. The caramel honey popcorn, coated with raw honey, is bursting with flavor from locally harvested honey. And, the Apple Pie Popcorn is seasoned with real apple pieces, apple pie spices, and graham cracker chunks! (Like, you pull out a piece of the popcorn and a graham cracker may just be attached.) It looks odd, and is sort of shocking, but OMG, it is good. Really. Unbelievably. Good. While Catoctin Popcorn Company specializes in making tasty popcorn concoctions, a new enterprise was recently launched, designed to bring additional pleasure to your taste buds: barbecue!

Too cold to stand outside for barbecue (never!)? You can find The Kernels at the popcorn company retail location Thursdays through Sundays, too. Go in to get a popcorn gift for a coworker, leave with a melt-in-your-mouth pulled pork sandwich for yourself. Win-Win! After a long, hard day of shopping, my sister and I worked up quite an appetite. So, when we headed into Sushi Densha, a Japanese fusion restaurant on Buckeystown Pike in Frederick, we were ready to eat!

Our waitress greeted us with, "Are you here for the sushi buffet?" All-you-can-eat sushi? I’d never heard of such a thing. As sushi-connoisseur-wannabes, we were thrilled with the idea. With sushi, as with good wines, if you know what to order it makes you feel just a little more sophisticated. Sushi Densha has a fairly unique setup. Tables are ssituated around the periphery and booths toward the center, lined by a conveyor belt. In the middle of the restaurant is the prep area. During our four sushi chefs were set up in the center, preparing the sushi on the spot. You can’t get any fresher than that!

33

SAVOR iT! I’d suggest you sit at one of the booths to get a view of the sushi chefs in action. You’ll also see all of the different types of sushi being freshly prepared, rolling by you on the conveyor belt. If you see something that looks good, you simply take it off the conveyor belt and eat it. Your cost is totaled by adding up the plates you've accumulated from the conveyor belt: Gray plates cost $1.49, pink plates are $3.49, yellow plates, $2.49 and blue plates, $4.49. Forewarning: this can be very difficult for some people. Imagine watching dozens of plates of fresh sushi rushing past you, tempting you over and over until finally, you grab it and eat it. One solution? Choose all-you-can-eat. That way, you won’t have to worry about how much money you’re racking up, stacking plate after plate. You can try the different types of sushi to your heart’s content. My sister wisely chose the all-you-can eat buffet, which includes sushi, your choice of soup or salad, and as many little shot glass-size desserts (chocolate mousse or cheesecake) from the conveyor belt as you want! The all-you-can-eat lunch is available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, and costs $13.95. Although I love sushi, Sushi Densha also offers other menu items that are just as delicious. I chose the Bento Box lunch, which included three pieces of California roll, three pieces of gyoza (a dumpling-type item), fruits, and a choice of miso soup, hot and sour soup, or salad, as well as one entrée choice: chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki, salmon teriyaki, shrimp tempura, sushi and sashimi or shrimp teriyaki. The atmosphere of the restaurant is modern, yet casual, with a bar and a comfortable waiting area. Happy hour specials are offered from 5-7 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays. Plus, join the Densha Club, and you’ll get 10% off on every visit and 50% off for your birthday. Our verdict? Wow! Everything was fresh and delicious. So, if you've got a hankerin' for Japanese style food, check out Sushi Densha soon.

Not many business owners would be happy to see some customers crying as they leave, but Ellen Przybocki, owner of The Original Playhouse in New Market, admits she looks at tears as an indication of success.

“I don’t like seeing kids cry, (but) it’s a compliment to see that they have a lot of fun and don’t like to leave,” said the 46-year-old Frederick resident, whose shoes-off, two-floor play space for kids and their parents recently celebrated its grand opening. The Original Playhouse, or TOP for short, features six unique play spaces within two floors of a fully renovated bright blue house on the main drag of New Market. Anyone who has ever visited a children’s museum will be familiar with the goal of TOP: to allow kids to have a safe, super fun place just for them to learn and explore. Przybocki encourages adults to bring only one or two children at a time to play at TOP, and that shoes and mobile phones remain off. She hopes parents, grandparents or other caregivers will fully engage with the children they bring inside, and bond with the little ones while discovering new ways to learn. Upon entering TOP, kids will find Art 101. The space is outfitted with long tables and lots of chairs, where young artists and their parents are encouraged to create. Cabinets are stocked with dozens of colors of paper, glue, scissors, pom poms, googly eyes, dry macaroni, pipe cleaners, glitter, stickers, stamps… and don’t even get me started on the variety of markers, crayons, colored pencils… it’s like a dream come true! Everything you ever wanted to use to create a piece of art can be found in the baskets and drawers in this room. Once you and your child get your fill of artwork, head down the hall to the Wonders of Water room, where kid-size stools stand ready near large tanks of water. Here, you are encouraged to experiment with what sinks or floats, and develop early math skills by comparing volume in containers of different shapes and sizes. Siphons, funnels, pipes and sieves stand at the ready to help children to understand water’s potential energy. WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

39

ViSiT iT!

The next room, called The Exploratorium, will likely be any Lego-lover’s favorite place to play. It’s loaded with hands-on equipment and toys intended for children to use to design and build. Upstairs, the Village Market and Home offer a glimpse into the life of children in different cultures. Currently, the room focuses on an African market, where kids can pretend to buy or sell fresh (pretend) foods. The room offers a multisensory learning approach, as children can touch and smell jars that hold spices from Uganda and listen to African music as they do so. “I had so much fun designing that room, and even though it’s on a very small scale, I see great value in exposing children to the ways other kids live in faraway places,” Przybocki said. “Children are typically so understanding and accepting of different ways of doing things; it’s fun listening to them play and compare basic differences in the two cultures.”

40

WINTER 2014

The Nature Nook down the hall was born of Przybocki’s daughter’s love of animals. Jemma, 10, was eager to help other kids learn about animals and their habitats. The Nook promotes conservation, with the objective of asking kids to think about where animals live and why. Przybocki hopes to convey a message about the importance of keeping land open for wildlife to thrive, especially here in Frederick County. The final room you may encounter was the first to be completed, and was perhaps the one that Przybocki had the most clear vision about: Reader’s Theater. Along one wall of the bright purple space, dozens of costumes, hats, bags, wings and more invite children to play out a fantasy. A small corner stage allows youngsters to act out scenes from a favorite book. “The reading teacher in me had to provide a literacy-rich room for parents and kids to enjoy performing classic stories or improvising a creation of their own,” said Przybocki, whose background includes a master’s degree in special education, and about 10 years as a reading intervention specialist in Frederick County Public Schools.

ViSiT iT! Przybocki enjoyed her work as a teacher and found it particularly satisfying watching a child “crack the code” of reading. But she found something else calling to her one day, when she took her daughter and a friend to visit a children’s museum in Gettysburg. “Jemma had been there a few times with other friends and she always came home saying how much fun it was. I wanted to see it for myself so we spent the afternoon there,” she said. “To see all the kids playing and giggling and using their imaginations so freely just really spoke to me. A light bulb turned on as I drove home and I became intent on opening one of my own.” At first, her husband, Mark, didn’t take her seriously. They had been saving to buy a lake house, but now Ellen had other plans. “I told him, ‘I don’t want a mountain house. I want a playhouse,’” and after a while, he more than obliged, helping brainstorm, renovate, and construct the many rooms and play spaces of TOP. Though she’s happy, proud, and excited about how the playhouse has come together so far, and encouraged by the many, varied visitors she has welcomed through the doors in the opening months of TOP, Przybocki isn’t sitting back and enjoying her success just yet. She’s got tons of plans for improvements, updates, and expansions of current offerings. In the works? Summer camps, outdoor spaces, classes for kids and/or adults, birthday parties, and so much more. “I’m getting very positive feedback from just about everyone who comes in— several parents have thanked me for bringing a place like this to the community,” she said. “It’s a new concept to a lot of people since there aren’t many children’s museums in our area, but they’re really embracing it with open arms.”

The Original Playhouse 4 West Main Street, New Market Hours Tues-Fri: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sat: 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sun & Mon: Closed $5 per adult, $10 per child (multi-visit passes offered at a discount) www.originalplayhouse.com

Plan to spend about 2 hours with your child exploring each room, and letting him/her guide you through the experience. Wear comfy socks, as this is a no-shoe zone E ach child receives 4 tokens upon entering, currently designated to be used for a work of art, a beaded necklace, or a STEM challenge. (The token system is Przybocki’s attempt to encourage kids to really think about materials they’re going to use before consuming more than they need. It’s an effort to promote quality over quantity and offers an awareness of how they’ll “spend” their tokens.) B athrooms and clean-up sink stations are available, though food and drinks are not. T he playhouse is targeted toward children ages 3-8, with activities appropriate for that developmental range.

WINTER 2014

LEARN iT

Years ago, when Meredith Lawler and her family moved onto an old farm property outside Walkersville, she knew the barns would one day house animals and, hopefully, something a little more special. In the last year, the beautifully renovated barn at Grape Creek Farm has played host to a wedding reception and a 40th birthday celebration, as well as an inspired community event Lawler hopes to make an every-other-month occurrence she calls “Books in the Barn.

51

LEARN iT

The first Books in the Barn was held in November, and found 842 gently used books displayed by category on long wooden tables, just waiting for children to take them home. A little less than half – 388 of them, to be exact – did find new homes. Titles such as “Pickles to Pittsburgh,” “Madeline and the Cats of Rome,” “Fancy Nancy’s Photo Scrapbook,” and “Who Was Anne Frank?” and so many more were offered for free to any child who visited the barn that day, with the hope that Lawler’s own love of reading, passed on to her by her mother, would reach out to others in the community. The idea for the event came to Lawler one day while she was, quite simply, overwhelmed. While cleaning her house in preparation for a friend’s visit, she found herself glancing at the stacks of books her three children had outgrown and thinking she should offer them for others to enjoy. Also on her mind was her mother, who had passed away recently, and who had a great love for books. “My mom was amazing and generous and so fun,” Lawler said. “I really do think she would love the idea of ‘Books in the Barn’ – just a simple, kind, no expectations concept.” Lawler remembers her mother always reading, and said her five grandchildren were the happy recipients of monthly packages of books from “Grammy’s Book Club.”

Her own children (ages 9, 11, and 13) were on hand during Books in the Barn to help littler guys find a favorite book, carry bags, and offer a smile. Each of the Lawler kids loves to read, and their mother indulges their bookishness. “I like the feeling of owning a lot of books. It's just kind of our thing. I think my kids get their reading strengths from my my husband and I, and from the decision I made early on to let them read whatever they wanted … to get them hooked... knowing that I could guide them to more complex books later on.” Aside from her own children’s stories that were donated, Lawler said her sister mailed 10 boxes of books for the giveaway, and her best friend in California sent WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

two big boxes as well. A few local friends dropped off books, and several people brought books to donate at the event itself. Lawler was pleased with the first “Books in the Barn” and is planning another for January. She updates a Facebook page (search for “Books in the Barn” or “Grape Creek Farm”) with details about the events. The first included free doughnuts and coffee and she hopes to continue that tradition, as well as adding on drinks for kids to enjoy. For the in-between months, Lawler plans to host private Books in the Barn openings for Moms Clubs, school librarians, children’s hospital representatives, and other similar groups. Several groups have already contacted her about the opportunity, and she’s thrilled. “The more kids we can touch with this project, the better,” she said. HEAR iT!

DAPPER

DJ Hey there! Yeah, I’m talking to you. Have you ever wanted to set up a big party and thought to yourself, “How could I make this a little more … dapper?” Then I’ve got just the ticket for a swinging cat like you. Meet the Dapper DJs!

Words by Erik McCabe Anderson

HEAR iT!

One bright August afternoon as I strolled through the Shab Row parking lot, my attention was arrested by the sounds of swinging jazz as hot as the weather. Half expecting to encounter the ghost of Glenn Miller, I hastened to investigate and soon discovered the next best thing. Out in front of The Shab Row Tea Emporium’s grand opening celebration, I saw the three Sincevich siblings (also known as The Dapper DJs) dressed in 1920s party outfits and spinning tunes off original shellac records on antique Victrola gramophones. While one of the siblings, the Dapper DJ himself, manned the equipment, the other two, Skat Cat Jack and The Swinging Sis, directly engaged onlookers by singing along with the music and encouraging dancing. Their jazzy presence was the perfect complement to a celebration at the cozy little tea shop. They were so knowledgeable about their music and equipment, and so comfortable in their roles, spouting off 1920s lingo as though it were their native language, that I had to find out where their time machine was parked. After sitting down with the three of them for a chat, I discovered that their dapperness resulted from neither space/time manipulation nor even good acting. This family has taken on the dapper philosophy as a way of life. The siblings told me that they’ve always preferred music and personal aesthetics from bygone days; they find it strange when passersby refer to their vintage suits and “flapper” dresses as “costumes,” because that’s how they dress on a daily basis, even when just staying home. The first music they can remember came from their mother’s old Victrola playing a 1940s recording of “Peter and the Wolf.” When they eventually discovered groups such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, they thought that kind of music represented what other kids their age considered modern and hip (keep in mind their age range is 22 to 30). While they certainly enjoy modern music, they tell me that nothing quite matches the rich, warm tones of those spinning shellac records, replete with little crackles and pops of the bouncing needle.

HEAR iT!

63

HEAR iT! Listening to their performance, I can understand what they mean. While digital music, with electronically synthesized sounds, comes through with crystal clarity on a good set of speakers, something about the raw acoustical nature of the wind-up gramophone with a large horn make you feel more connected to both the music and the original performers who recorded it nearly a century ago. That sense of physical connectedness and limitations had a direct impact on the development of music over the 20th century. For instance, our modern notion that a standard radio song should last about 3 to 4 minutes is due to the fact that gramophones need to be re-cranked after that time and their needles need to be replaced after each playing. Recorded music couldn’t support the long orchestral pieces of classical music and had to be retooled to the jazzy up-tempo beat that became the ancestor of modern rock and pop. “Good music is timeless. That is something I’ve always known to be true,” the Dapper DJ told me. “The hot jazz of the youth from those times was no different from today.” Fortunately, audiences agree. Since their debut three years ago, the trio has been spreading the dapper gospel all over Frederick, at everything from public celebrations to weddings, and they’ve garnered quite the following. They said that almost every time they work at an event, they’re approached by someone who invites them to another. But as dedicated as they are to their style, they’re also really flexible. Although they have certainly worked events such as Gatsby-themed weddings that go all out in recreating a Prohibition Era atmosphere, booking the DJs doesn’t mean that you have to take out a costume rental or cover-up the TVs. They’ve worked with other performers to create mix-themed parties, and even no-theme parties that just have epic music. If you want a group who treats flipping records like an art form and provides an interactive experience for your guests, the Dapper DJs are for you. To book them for your next fling, drop them a line at thedapperdj@gmail.com. You can also find them at www.thedapperdj.com or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TheDapperDJ.

OVER THE EDGE!

Steeped in

National History tcher huan Bu S y B s Word

The 180-mile stretch of land from Gettysburg, Pa., to Charlottesville, Va., is no ordinary landscape. Traveling through that region provides an unparalleled historic and cultural experience that includes:

• 9 presidential homes • 30 historic Main Street communities • 13 National Park units • 2 World Heritage sites • The largest collection of Civil War sites in the nation • Sites from the Revolutionary War, French and Indian War, and the War of 1812 • Hundreds of African American and Native American Heritage sites • 16 National Historic Landmarks • The largest concentration of National Historic Districts in the country • More than 1 million acres on the National Register of Historic Places • Hundreds of vineyards, wineries, orchards, and local markets

OVER THE EDGE!

Recently designated as the 38th National Heritage Area in the country, the Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area is indeed “Where America Happened.” As Pulitzer Prize winning writer and historian David McCullough said, “This is the ground of our Founding Fathers. These are landscapes that speak volumes — small towns, churches, fields, mountains, creeks and rivers with names such as Bull Run and Rappahannock.” And all of these places are woven together by three common threads: Leadership, Conflict and Reunification, and Beauty.

The Land of Leadership

No fewer than nine presidents have called this region home, including Thomas Jefferson (whose home, Monticello, is the only private residence declared a World Heritage Site), James Madison, James Monroe, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and

74

OVER THE EDGE!

John F. Kennedy. Here, presidents and world leaders have been inspired to write some of the most important doctrines of our time, including the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address, the Monroe Doctrine, and the Marshall Plan.

The Land of Conflict and Reunification

The most significant battles of the Civil War — Harpers Ferry, Manassas, Gettysburg, Antietam, The Wilderness, Monocacy, and dozens of others — took place within the Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area. Underground Railroad sites dot the land, highlighting the struggle for freedom. This is where the Union was preserved and the cradle of democracy was forged. From Civil War to civil rights, there are many stories to tell from this place. WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

75

OVER THE EDGE!

The Land of Beauty

Amidst the history, you will also find vibrant historic downtowns: Gettysburg in Pennsylvania; Frederick, Hagerstown, Westminster, and others in Maryland; Harpers Ferry in West Virginia; and Leesburg, Middleburg, Warrenton, Washington, Culpeper, Orange, Madison, and Charlottesville in Virginia. Each has its own unique charm and culture, with restaurants, cafÊs, museums, galleries, shops, inns, and festivals. The bucolic countryside is a tapestry of orchards, farms, and wineries crossed by pristine rivers and sparkling streams. The heritage area’s 13 national parks are also ideal for hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, and other recreational pursuits.

OVER THE EDGE!

Connecting the presidential homes and battlefield sites is a historic artery that predates Colonial America. Now known as the Journey through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byway (U.S. Route 15), this 180-mile historic road spans a four-state region, including parts of Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. This highway, which runs north to south through Frederick County, was designated as the 99th National Scenic Byway in the country.
