and so it is said‌

The holidays sometimes have a way of turning our lives upside down. So now that they are over and the chill of winter is upon us, I was thinking about resolutions. I no longer make new year's resolutions because I finally realized that most of my successful attempts at keeping any said resolutions happened when I made them on a random Wednesday... perhaps in June. I'm not really even sure. I just know that surprisingly, some of my desired habit changes actually stuck... and they had nothing to do with a champagne laced promise proclaimed at midnight. Resolutions are simply a voicing of one's desire to make a change. That's it. Real change comes with action. So what does that mean? It may mean finding a local shop that provides just what you need to feed your family with healthy food and support their health with natural remedies. It could be that you go searching for a new workout to kick up your metabolism as well as your dedication to fitness. Whatever you need to support your efforts to change, you'll most likely find it somewhere in Frederick County. Remember, a resolution is a kind of promise and a promise is only a promise if you actually DO what you said you'd do! With everything that our diverse community has to offer, you'll find all the support you'll need.

Sushi With a View

Top-notch sushi with a view from the top of Patrick Street is what you’ll get during a visit to one of Downtown Frederick’s most recently opened eateries, Lazy Fish. Though it offers a beautifully diverse menu, full of sushi favorites and new-to-you delicacies, it’s advisable to simply ask your server what’s good that day, and receive a plate of delicious selections in return. For a tasty twist on happy hour, try Lazy Hour, Mondays through Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Gyoza, Asian wings, yakitori, and a selection of fresh rolls, such as the alwayspopular California, crunchy spicy scallop, or salmon skin roll are available at a special price, as are sake, sapporo, and rail drinks. It’s the lazy person’s way to try out this bright new spot, high atop the Historic District. Lazy Fish 10 East Patrick St., Frederick 301-695-9656

WINTER 2015

Words by Rosa Garcia

It’s January: the holiday hoopla is over, the days are shorter and colder, and many of us are keeping our fingers crossed that we don’t catch our officemate’s cold. Instead of relying on luck, why not try something new? We’ve uncovered some unique foods, herbal extracts and essential oils that offer ways to naturally boost your immune system, ward off the occasional sniffle and get your energy flowing again.

Mark Garcia, produce manager at The Common Market, concentrates on stocking seasonal foods that are healthy, organic and fresh, which can be a challenge during the winter months.

“Winter can be brutal for some people, but choosing the right foods can make all the difference in your energy levels as well as your body’s ability to fight off common viruses,” Garcia said. “Adding a variety of fresh produce to your meals, like dark, leafy greens, root vegetables and even chili peppers, is natural fuel for your body.” Garcia recommends the following good-for-you foods this winter: Broccoli leaves: Before your broccoli reaches the store shelves, it grows surrounded by large leaves that can reach up to 2 feet long. Picked at 4-6 inches, they have a milder flavor than broccoli. Cook as you would kale or collard greens. Tatsoi: This mild leafy green is usually mixed in salads. Prepare as you would spinach; it’s just as healthy. Red Dandelion Greens: Surprise, it’s not a dandelion! It actually belongs to the chicory family. The greens are bitter and are great in a mixed salad or braised as a side dish. Chioggia beets: The sweeter version of the more widely known beet, this cousin can be prepared the same. Its red and white interior stripes add distinctiveness to dishes. Red Kabocha Squash: Slightly nutty and sweet, this squash is a beauty. It’s great for both eating and decorating. Sometimes, we need a little boost to the system, along with our food choices. Using an herbal supplement or homeopathic medicine is a natural way to treat illness and nourish your body. When selecting the right one, it’s recommended to speak with a professional. Jane Courter at County Home & Health in Smithsburg is a virtual encyclopedia of knowledge for finding the right herbal and nutritional supplements as well as homeopathic medicines. Whether you live closer to the Washington County line or want to learn more about what’s right for you, this is the place to be. “We have many products that help support the body to heal. We are more geared toward herbal and nutritional supplements and attend classes two to three times a year. Education is very important, we want to know everything about the products we sell and how to help people,” Courter said. WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

To help you feel your best this season, these herbal tinctures could help: Goldenseal: Considered to have natural antibiotic properties and to be an effective decongestant. Good Mood: An herbal blend that supports a healthy emotional balance. Echinacea: Boosts immunity and helps the body fight the cold & flu virus. Tea Tree Oil: An antiseptic and antifungal, this oil can be used to treat cold sores. Holy Basil: Treats cold and flu, bronchitis, earache fever and improves energy and vitality. So far we’ve taken care of good things to ingest for better health, but what about our sense of smell? Both The Common Market and Country Home & Health supply essential oils that can be used for aromatherapy, but there are two special women in the region who you should meet before purchasing oils on your own. Certified master of clinical aromatherapy Amye Clark and her daughter, Chelsea Lundgren are certified reflexologists and owners of Anam Cara Botanicals. Together they create signature and custom oils that are aimed at improving a person's health or mood. “Every essential oil is an antiseptic, some can address staph and others the common cold and flu,” Clark said. Look for their scents of the month, all developed to reduce the main stressors associated with the time of year and season. Anam Cara is located inside Maven Beauty Bar in Downtown Frederick. NG Interior designer and furniture connoisseur Christopher Z. Ritchie opened Smokestack Studios on Market Street last summer, with an eye for stylish furniture that honors a sense of history. Walking through the doors, you immediately understand what Ritchie aimed to create — an imaginative studio that screams individuality.

45

CHARGE iT Much of that individuality is what drew Ritchie’s attention to Frederick. “I found Frederick just passing through and fell in love with the small businesses, local artists and community-driven focus,” Ritchie said. “As you can see, there are no big-box brands downtown, only local, hard-working stores. I wanted to find a location that was a true community, where people say ‘hello’ to each other and support local businesses. “The store has been hugely successful…We offer interior design services and this part of the business is completely booked.” Frederick businesses such as Family Meal; The Temple, a Paul Mitchell Partner School; and DNA Lab have hired

re

CHARGE iT Smokestack Studios to design their interiors, and Ritchie and his team are working on several residential interior design projects as well. It’s obvious why local business owners have gravitated toward Smokestack’s unique taste. Inside the Market Street studio, light fixtures hang from roped pulley systems and chandeliers made from wine bottles with exposed bulbs grace the space. The wideplanked hardwood floors are decorated with unique area rugs. Each turn unveils something new, from a peddler’s coffee table and Model T steering wheel to a vintage iron suitcase painted with the Union Jack. “We actually go picking all over to find one-of-akind items,” Ritchie said. “Right now a client wants us to decorate with Buddhas, so in many cases we go picking to look for unique items.”

claimING WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

47

CHARGE iT Everything has been meticulously selected for its personality and style. “Furniture is style. What you wear is what you sit on,” Ritchie said. “That’s why you will also find vintage leather bags, handmolded hats and other accessories mixed throughout the studio.” Together it paints the complete picture of what Smokestack studios provides: exclusive collections of individual industrial chic, rustic and modern products. The collections include furniture made with all natural banana leaf, abaca, mahogany and mango wood, reclaimed pine and aluminum. What they all have in common is exceptional quality, old-world craftsmanship and eternal elegance. Remember that lovely little dress you bought, thinking you’d wear it to your high school reunion last year? But then you backed out of the reunion, and the dress has sat, unworn, in the back of your closet ever since. Well, now is your chance to free up some closet space and liberate that dress, while earning a few bucks in the process. Head over to Monocacy Trading Company, in Frederick’s Shab Row shopping district. MTC isn’t a consignment store; they buy in-style, in-season clothing and home goods that are less than two years old and offer you cash on the spot. Then, they resell the items to others. Casual or designer clothing, bags, jewelry and shoes are welcome! So go ahead and get rid of that dress you’ll never wear, and maybe you’ll find a belt or scarf to add to your collection instead. LEARN iT!

More than a

planet

54

WINTER 2015

LEARN iT!

arium Words by Ty Unglebower

For years, many Frederick locals have referred to it simply as “the planetarium. While the Ausherman Planetarium is a main component of the unique Frederick County Public Schools facility on Madison Street, it is by no means the only component. Along with the planetarium, these days the structure on the grounds of Lincoln Elementary contains a small astronomical observatory, various specimens of living animals and plant life, an arboretum and dozens of science exhibits. In its entirety, the campus is properly known as The Earth and Space Science Laboratory (or ESSL.)

55

LEARN iT! ESSL began its life in 1962 as both a 70-seat planetarium and a geology lab. The curriculum expanded in 1985 to include oceanography. Ten years later, the facility added meteorological studies. From that time, the ESSL has offered education on both space and most of the major fields within what are known as the earth sciences. Although by special arrangement middle school- and high school-level educational programs are available, most of the curriculum that ESSL offers on a regular basis is geared toward elementary-aged students. Management estimates that 17,000 students and 650 teachers participate in ESSL’s many programs each school year. Specific programs can also be tweaked in order to fit in with the particular course of study for any given visiting class. Geology activities at the ESSL involve rock collections, (some of which can glow in the dark), real fossil samples, solar energy exhibits and various problem solving stations and activities. Students of the life sciences will find not only microscopes and stream tables, but real, live animals that can be touched in the aptly named “touch stations.” Horseshoe crabs, starfish and sea urchins are among the featured sea life.

56

WINTER 2015

LEARN iT! Large aquariums, specially designed to replicate conditions in various water habitats such as the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, are found here as well. The meteorology curriculum provides live weather data from WJLA TV’s WeatherBug app for analysis. A device known as a Van der Graaf generator is also on-site in order to recreate and study the effects of lightning. (Many kids enjoy the device, because when it is touched properly, the electrical current it provides makes a person’s hair stick out.) Then there is the space-oriented curriculum. Even that is not restricted to the planetarium itself. There are scale models of the solar system, rocket launch demonstrations and use of working telescopes to study the heavens, plus many other exhibits and activities that play a role in a young student’s study of space. Weather permitting, the recently constructed Natelli Observatory is also open to the general public on select evenings throughout the year. Yet, unfair and inaccurate as it may be, there is a reason the ESSL is still often known as simply “the planetarium.” For it is the activities and presentations within same that are the most talked about among visiting children. (And even some of the visiting adults.) The domed projection screen in the Ausherman Planetarium is 35 feet in diameter. Its projection equipment provides not only dazzling recreations of the night sky on earth and from other places in the universe, but also can also play movies. (The fancy term for such equipment, installed in 2009, is a Goto Hybrid

57

LEARN iT! Planetarium System, the first of its kind available to any public school in the United States.) These presentations are not reserved for young students. The now 80-seat Ausherman Planetarium provides the general public with shows and activities throughout the year on most Tuesday or Thursday evenings. Admission is usually $5, and tickets are available online. In the past, movies shown on the planetarium’s projection screen included documentaries about black holes, bugs, Saturn, animals of the sea and even the Christmas Star. Some of the most popular activities at the planetarium are the various laser-light shows, presented for several evenings in the fall as a fundraiser for the ESSL. In 2014, these shows raised nearly $7,000 for the facility. More than 2,000 people of all ages attended last year’s laser shows, including Halloween themes, patriotic themes and even shows set to the music of such classic rock bands as the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. (“Dark Side of the Moon” takes on a whole new meaning when one enjoys it within the confines of a planetarium show.)

58

WINTER 2015

LEARN iT! These laser and music shows typically last about 30 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of space-related projections pertaining to stars and constellations. Both the curious child in your family and the curious child within you will discover something worth exploring at the Earth and Space Science Lab. I walked into my first ever Zumba class 20 pounds overweight and all the way out of shape. I’d been creepy-kid-style stalking the class through privacy windows at the gym for weeks; too afraid to go in, but intrigued enough to watch from my position on the workout machines, where I was pretending to be getting in shape. I’d hear the catchy music coming from the room, and watch in awe as the colorful characters (seriously, those Zumba peeps have interesting style) would stream from the room after class, drenched in sweat and covered in smiles.

MOVE iT

It looked so fun — scary when you’re a chunky mom of three with the stamina of a baby sloth and a stained college tee commemorating the last time you worked out — but, still, so fun! Eventually I conned a friend into going with me to help break into the Zumba magic. It turns out it was the first day of the rest of my life. When we entered that first day it was to a soundtrack of hip hop music blaring from the speakers. Other people milled about, chatting and catching up like old friends. The moment we crossed the threshold, a woman, older than me but with a banging body I was instantly envious of, turned her smile on us, instantly recognizing us as newbies. “Welcome," she said, "I'm Amanda!" She talked with us briefly before being called away by other students eager to chat with her. Eventually she took the stage and my friend and I slinked off to the back of the class where we could humiliate ourselves in private. I spent the next hour stumbling over my own feet and trying not to pass out from overexertion, but I left with a smile and a feeling in my bones I'd not experienced in years. Or, actually, maybe ever. I was hooked. And my love for dance fitness grew as I became a regular in Amanda's classes, whittling away the weight I’d worked years trying to remove. Like so many other of her students, I became a fitness groupie. Her energy is fresh and contagious. She pushes you to places you probably don't have the willpower to push yourself and she does it by making you feel good. Strong, and powerful, and healthy, and sexy, and good. Really good. So, when she came to us in class one day and said that she was working on a new fitness format that would be a creative, intense fusion of dance and fitness fueled by music and passion, I didn't need to be convinced. I trusted her, and I knew it would be amazing. Amanda Bidlack-Strand, creator of Bang, says this new format is inspired by music and devoted to taking your body, be it already in shape or struggling to the bus stop with your kids, to its next level. It is designed to make you feel on the inside

as good as it will eventually make you look on the outside. Officially, "BANG™ Power Dance is a dangerously funky power-fitness format using weighted gloves and featuring music that inspires you to get fierce and move! BANG™ delivers the intensity you need to get the results you crave. But, Bidlack-Strand’s vision is not to create a place where people can come to get the perfect body. She will readily admit there is no such thing. Her goal is to inspire people to be the best version of themselves that they can be. She seeks to build spirits, inspire greatness, create an all-inclusive dance haven where people can come to find what’s inside and use it to move themselves to a healthier, happier lifestyle. And, she wants you to sweat, continuously and profusely, if possible. So far she’s doing just that. The vibe can easily be felt pulsating through every Bang class. There’s this powerful feeling of accomplishment as you finish each track. And, if you’re peering through the privacy glass like I once was, it looks like a bunch of sweaty chicks just dancing and punching, but it’s so much more than that. It’s an opportunity to grow your mind, body and soul. You leave all of the family drama and work stress and annoying emails outside while you let the music and the movement take over. And the promise of a cupcake, because you can eat one, guilt free, if you Bang correctly. And women everywhere are joining Amanda on this mission. She’s created a Bang team (affectionately known as Bangers) of leaders who teach classes (as the demand continues to grow), and who also embody the spirit of Bang. They aren’t the greased up fitness models some formats parade around, they’re a mixed bag of people, passionate about health and fitness, appreciative of funky music, and eager to help take you and your body to another level. In March, Bidlack-Strand is slated to visit New York to present Bang at the ECA World Fitness Conference to help bring awareness and garner support for the format. She and her team of supporters/instructors plan to take the world by storm. And to think, it all started right here in Frederick. Want to try out a BANG™ Power Dance class? Connect with the Bangers online to see the most recent schedule. And, if you need a chaperone, I’m your girl.

Vegan and vegetarian dining options can sometimes be challenging to find. But Frederick is fast becoming a spot to count on, especially with the opening of That Hummus Place on South Market Street. Made-to-order sandwiches filled with your choice of fresh vegetables, falafel, hummus, and more, as well as hand-cut sweet potato fries, and buttery baklava will tempt even the biggest carnivores, too. The small shop is open for a few in-store diners and takeout every day, and its bright green-and-yellow exterior make it hard to miss.
