AND SO IT IS SAID‌

This winter has gotten off to such a warm start, it seems Mother Nature has decided to give us a little sneak preview of the coming spring. Forsythia bushes were blooming prematurely and dandelions scattered the supposedly dormant grass while spring robins crowded around the bird feeders with cardinals and black-capped chickadees. Even my Lenten Roses were in full, glorious bloom on Christmas morning! So while that may mean that the ski boots and sleds stay stored a while longer than usual, that doesn't mean there isn't an arms-length long list of fun things to do this winter season. Foodies can explore all of the delightful options throughout the county. From odd-shaped burgers to barbecue joints, to Cuban food or sushi served on a conveyer belt, there is indeed something for every taste and preference. A day spent wandering the many quaint downtowns of Frederick County, exploring galleries, shops and museums, followed by a rousing night of karaoke sounds like the perfect way to spend time while we're waiting for Jack Frost to make his eventual appearance. Frederick has everything visitors and residents want to help fill the new year with food, fun, family and friends. So...embrace this unusual weather... and explore Frederick!

LEARN iT!

NEW LIFE FOR SOUTH MARKET Words by Ty Unglebower

If you’ve ever been on a Hollywood movie set, maybe you’ve seen standalone façades – one-dimensional buildings painted and propped up from behind to look like entire houses or businesses from a distance. But you don’t need to go all the way to Hollywood to see such things. Since the year 2000, the “buildings” along South Market Street (addresses 58 through 70) have been façades. What appears to be a group of boarded-up buildings are actually just one-dimensional paintings with metal supports among grass and some rubble behind them keep them upright to the street. Most of the buildings at these addresses were torn down 15 years ago, their long-derelict status making them beyond repair. The city government is considering plans and proposals for a permanent change to these lots, but before that happens, an artist is seeking permission to turn the façades into a temporary art installation.

25

LEARN iT!

Heather Clark, a Frederick-area artist with degrees from both the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Cornell University, is spearheading the effort. Clark’s vision, which would be realized with the assistance of volunteers, includes an open-air theatre space for plays, concerts and other performance arts.

Photos courtesy Frederick Art Facade

Another major component of the project would be “living sculptural landforms,” constructed of sod, dirt and plant life in an effort to reflect the topography of the Catoctin Mountains. This, according to the project’s Facebook page, would provide a contrast with the visual of the ruined buildings. Volunteers, perhaps children, could also take part in this aspect of the project.

26 WINTER 2016

LEARN iT!

“I think this will be a fun event,” Clark said, “and a nice segue into hosting children’s events at the theater, such as performance and storytime.” Frederick Art Façade, as it is being called, is very much in line with Clark’s overall vision as an artist, as seen on her website: “...through her art, she demonstrates how present reality is not a given and can rather be crafted to make life more fulfilling.”

"...present reality is not a given and can rather be crafted to make life more fulfilling."

LEARN iT!

The first legal hurdle has, as of this writing, already been cleared; the Frederick Public Art Commission approved the project in December 2015. The Frederick Historic Preservation Commission are scheduled to review the plans in mid-January, and pending its approval, the project will secure a building permit from the city.

Instead of suggesting decay, the block will suggest life. No downtown was ever hurt by having more life in it.

28 WINTER 2016

Photos courtesy Frederick Art Facade

Ideally for Clark, construction on the project would begin in March 2016, and be completed in April or May, in time to welcome the warmer spring weather. Alas, even if approved and constructed, the project will not last forever. Much like the former buildings on Market Street, now represented only by their façades, this public art installation will one day be taken down and removed. But whatever time it remains will surely serve the public in a far greater manner than the boarded-up remnants that have stood there for so long.

SHARE iT!

With a mission to end domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse, and to provide victims with safety, shelter and supportive services, Heartly House is an organization filled with staff and volunteers who lead with the hearts of helpers.

Heartly House is a place of compassion and has served Frederick County residents who have been impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse for over 30 years. They also provide assistance to those affected secondarily such as family members, spouses, significant others, and sisters or brothers. Heartly House's wide variety of services include a 24-hour hotline, which is available 7 days a week, with a TTY line and language interpreters who are also available when needed. A handicap accessible emergency shelter is available for victims of domestic violence who are in immediate danger. For many abuse victims, finding somewhere to go without leaving their pets behind feels like a big obstacle, so for those in crisis who have pets, a Safe Pet Program will provide a confidential shelter for family pets while clients reside at the emergency shelter. The importance counseling services play in the recovery of victims of violence and abuse is paramount. The programs offered by Heartly House are one of the programs most impressive elements. Services include crisis appointments, ongoing counseling, and support groups. Topics such as Breaking the Cycle for Domestic Violence Victims, Sexual Assault Support, and Adults Molested as Children give clients a safe place to heal with the support of skilled counselors and fellow survivors. Heartly House also works closely with a diverse group of other community organizations to help provide any other necessary resources a client may find beneficial such as the Frederick Rescue Mission, Way Station, Project 103, Cold Weather Shelter, Department of Social Services and Community Action Agency.

Fear of the unknown can create a huge obstacle to victims reaching out for assistance.

Community outreach and education is another important arm of the Heartly House program. Special presentation materials are available for a large variety of groups and different audiences such as schools, colleges and universities; social clubs such as the Lions and Moose clubs; churches; professional agencies; and private organizations. Heartly House tailors each presentation to the needs of the organization and will present on topics such as Heartly House services, domestic violence, sexual assault, bullying prevention and elder abuse. Presentations are always age-appropriate and are aimed at building on the knowledge base of the audience. New volunteers and donations are always welcome. Visit the Heartly House website to fill out a volunteer application or to review the online wish list. The website provides a current list of items needed to continue providing the necessary services to clients. Fear of the unknown can create a huge obstacle to victims reaching out for assistance. Many people don’t know what the next day may bring, and must focus on keeping their children safe while at the same time trying to maneuver the maze that is the legal system. Heartly House is a beacon of hope, support and compassion for these folks, the ones that need help the most. If you need help, don't hesitate to reach out via the Heartly House crisis hotline. And know that help is near.

PAUL WILSON AND CLEO DUNSMORE BUCHANAN: Classical Vitality, realism in smooth oils and hot glass NOMA (NOrth MArket) Gallery, Frederick’s newest art gallery, opened recently on the corner of 5th and Market streets. Portraits evoking the warm, personal feel of Vermeer portraiture by painter Paul Wilson are featured in the space throughout the month of January. Wilson's still life paintings conjure Dutch Baroque images of impeccably rendered fruit and give the gallery a sense of timelessness. Between the paintings stand pedestals holding meticulous glass miniatures of wildlife, created by sculptor Cleo Dunsmore Buchanan.

Wilson’s classical realism gives the viewer a window into his life. Each image includes a paper lying within, tempting the viewer to touch it, anticipating a crinkle. The crispness of the paper seems visible in his inimitable rendering of texture. Buchanan’s glasswork includes no paints, no coldworking, no vitreous enamels. Every detail has been applied in the flame, while the work is hot. While her work is petite, the character and spirit Buchanan captures is grand. Inspired always by animals, the artist endeavors to capture the moment of wonder we experience when we come upon wildlife on a walk in the woods. “Darsan" is a word for a moment of sacred connection with a deity or a holy person. Buchanan experiences darsan with animals, and finds her spiritual center with their guidance.

Buchanan grew up creating creatures in clay in her mother’s ceramic studio, and studied fine art at Carnegie Mellon University. In 2003, she bought a starter torch and some glass rods, and that was that. She happily tossed aside all other interests in order to devote herself to the glass studio. Her wildlife beads and sculpture have appeared in books and in periodicals. Her work can be seen in galleries in Illinois, California, Singapore and Seattle. Buchanan's family includes a husband with a cape, a son who teaches her Buddhist principles, one Great Dane, a special cat and three tortoises. She lives in Ijamsville. HEAR iT! The literal meaning of the word kara oke in Japanese is ‘empty orchestra’. The first karaoke machine was invented by Japanese musician Daisuke Inoue back in the 1970s. After that, karaoke became a mainstay in Japan. Then in the 80’s it became popular in the U.S. And now it’s popular all over the world! Singing along to your favorite song is so enjoyable and very therapeutic. The re’s just something about singing at the top of your lungs to Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ or Al Green’s ‘Let’s Stay Tog ether’ that gets your blood moving and the endorphins flowing. To be in the spotlight and feel like a rock star, hold ing that microphone and belting out a tune just makes you feel alive. Karaoke brings out the best from all walks of life. And if you’re too shy to go up and sing a song, it can be just as ente rtaining to sit back and listen. You’d be surprised by who will walk up to that mic and sing like an angel. There are several opportunities right here in Frederick County to go out and get your karaoke-on! As a matter of fact, you can go sing karaoke every sing le night of the week except for Sundays and Mondays. On Tuesday nights you can go to Bus hwaller’s in downtown Frederick for som e karaoke action with DJ Brian Mo Ente rtainment. Every Wednesday night for the last 14 years, Al’s Karaoke has been running the karaoke show at Old Towne Tavern, bringing in the regulars. On the first Wednesday of the mon th, DJ Brian Mo Entertainment host s karaoke at Hard Times Café.

Friday nights are very popular karaoke nights in Frederick. Callahan’s Seafood Bar & Grill, Oriole’s Nest, and Bell es’ Sports Bar all have your karaoke addiction covered. And on every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month, you can find Wynn’s Wacky Karaoke at The American Legion in Brunswick. If Saturday night is your night to go out, you can enjoy karaoke at Callahan ’s and Oriole’s Nest. And every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, you’ll find Wynn & Kellyoke from Wynn’s Wac ky Karaoke bringing the house down at Buckeystown Pub. If you’ve never been to a place that does karaoke, you need to try it at least once . I promise you will at the very least be entertained. It doesn’t even matter how good you can sing. It’s about the enti re experience. And oh, is it a fun one!

OVER THE EDGE!

Outsiders may see Gettysburg, Pennsylvania as an eternal place of mourning, filled with museums and an endless sea of fallen soldiers’ graves. But Gettysburg has been undergoing a rebirth of sorts. You will still find some kitschy souvenir shops, historical names donning many a business and ghost tours aplenty, but today’s Gettysburg is less relic and more inspired.

OVER THE EDGE!

72 WINTER 2016

OVER THE EDGE! Farm-to-fork destinations filled with scrumptious food and drink, family grown produce and authentic hospitality await visitors today. But visiting Gettysburg is not a light endeavor. A spirit of mindfulness seems to pervade the very land itself and with it the culture that calls these foothills home. In a time when many families are selling their farms to developers, Adams County appears to be resisting that trend, stemming from an ethic for farming as a way of life. One unique destination is Cornerstone, a farmstead dating to the 1860s, surrounded by bucolic pastureland where about 20 rescued thoroughbreds call home. Homemade pastries, frittatas, parfaits and fresh veggies are served to guests, with frolicking horses providing a backdrop for meals.

OVER THE EDGE! When owners John and Allie Paxson noticed how therapeutic their inn was for visiting military couples, they created a nonprofit to help veterans overcome PTSD. Patriots Place welcomes veterans or active-duty armed forces personnel that have served in the Gulf Wars, Iraq or Afghanistan to stay here free of charge. While at Cornerstone Farm they get paired with a retired racehorse for equine therapy, indulge in gourmet breakfasts and most importantly, spend time relaxing with their spouse away from the stresses of daily life.

74 WINTER 2016

OVER THE EDGE!

Near the historic Eisenhower National Historic Site, local entrepreneur Yianna Barakos has planted 47 acres of grain on parkland for his soon to open MasonDixon Distillery. Barakos found an abandoned furniture factory to house his distillery operations, and no detail has been overlooked in the restoration. “I get goose bumps when I tell people I am building my business on a 100-yearold foundation, says Barakos. Beams have been hand-sanded and windows lovingly restored while reclaimed wood provided the raw materials for interior moldings. Barakos has partnered with his father on this venture of spirit, and has good reason to believe that Gettysburg is ripe for business.

OVER THE EDGE! Nearby Hauser Estate Winery is another family farm that has embraced the old while making something new and exciting. Once just an apple orchard, now the farm is home to wine and cider production. But when you arrive at Hauser all you will notice is a 360-degree vista even though all the wine and hard cider is made on site. Thanks to an underground facility that can produce up to 10,000 gallons of cider per month, Jack’s Hard Cider (named for the farm’s patriarch Jack Houser) is now being sold in five East Coast states and Washington, D.C.

FLOAT AWAY

Floatation therapy is based on a scientific approach to deep relaxation called Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique, or REST. The idea was developed in the mid-1950s at the National Institute of Mental Health, by a neuroscientist named Dr. John C. Lilly. REST has the potential to relieve stress, to lower blood pressure and to stave off migraines. Climbing into a pod for floatation therapy at Regenerate Float Spa in Hagerstown may be the answer for those who have resolved to relax in 2016. At Hagerstown business, Regenerate Float Spa, they are passionate about helping the community live happier, healthier lives through the power of floating.
