I’ve trained as a musician in West Virginia and spent 13 years in Chicago with my husband, enjoying the many benefits of living in a big, vibrant city. Although I’ve now lived in Frederick for as long as I did in Chicago, I know a small piece of my heart still resides there and in West Virginia, too. While I’ll always be a West Virginia University Mountaineer and think longingly of our days in Chicago, the City of Frederick is now very much home. So, I’ll admit it…the FOUND iTs in this issue are completely self serving! Eating authentic Chicago hot dogs right in Downtown Frederick? I never even dared to dream! As well as a new gourmet popcorn shop with flavors that make you smile just across the border in West Virginia? I’ll take it! Each issue, we work to bring you the people, places and things that we hope you’ll find as wonderful, interesting, entertaining and/or delicious as we do. So while we’re in this wintry season, bundle up and explore the county and venture over the edge. You’ll be sure to discover yet another treasure that’s been patiently waiting to be found all along. Be sure to sign up for our eNewsletter at FiNDiTFrederick.com and follow us on social media for our exciting giveaways!

WINDY CITY RED HOTS A dream come true for our editor, Windy City Red Hots has opened on Carroll Creek! A pure beef hot dog, joined with mustard, that oh-so-Chicago glowing green relish, onions, tomato, pickle and sport peppers, nestled in a warm poppy seed bun, then topped with celery salt. They are as authentic and delicious as possible without airfare or a long drive! The menu also includes other Chicago favorites like an Italian Beef, Polish, as well as their Pizza Puff and Chicago Tamale. They even offer a delightfully yummy Veggie Dog for you nonmeat eaters. The hurried yet friendly lunch crowd gathering for a quick bite, the enticing smell of hot dogs and sausage, along with the cold, blustery winter wind provides a perfect little snapshot of the Chicago hot dog experience. *While ketchup is never encouraged‌it is allowed.

Frederick is known for a skyline that boasts more church spires than high rises, and more historical buildings than modern architecture. However, the city’s decades old flood control plan resulted in a stunning example of how preservation and innovation can work beautifully together.

It’s a family affair at Surelocked In Escape Games in Downtown Frederick! When FiND iT Frederick showed up at their doorstep, the Sparks family was charismatic and all too eager to lock us in their holiday-themed escape room called Naughty or Nice. (You can read more about our sleuthing escapades on our blog.) Since our encounter with Santa’s Naughty List, we’ve done a little more digging into this budding family business and we have nothing but great things to say. Escape Room rules are simple: you’re shut in a room for an hour and to get out, you must solve a series of interlocking puzzles, using objects and clues in the room. The Sparks at Surelocked In are generous and give you three hints to use at your discretion, to help as you race against the timer in the corner of the room. The concept is about 10 years old, with the earliest room opening in Japan in 2007. Escape rooms’ popularity continues to skyrocket, especially in Frederick, where the “positive response from the community has been overwhelming.” The “spark” for this family’s business came from their own escape room experience in the summer of 2015. The “family of five had a blast scrambling to solve the puzzles and beat the clock,” and it stuck with them. They’ve traveled around, as they say, “far and wide, escaping from rooms, always having a great time” and began to see trends, common to the most entertaining escape rooms. The Sparks have done a great job incorporating they’ve “created a new, wholesome, familyfriendly entertainment experience” in the heart of Downtown Frederick. As far as working together as a family, it’s clear that they collaborate well. Chris Sparks said “when it came time to start the family

business, we talked it over and realized we all had the skills and strengths we needed to build this thing right…we knew we could always count on each other when the work got stressful…You can always count on your family.” According to Chris, the business model is working beautifully. “Working together is a blast…it’s easy to find something funny to laugh about when you get to play games for a living,” he said. Their hard work has brought to life three different escape adventures. Ship Outta Luck is pirate ship-themed, and you must find your treasure below deck before the Royal Navy sinks your ship. In Escape Groom, you battle to save your friend from marrying a monster. Available around Christmas, Naughty or Nice entails the struggle of clearing your name from Santa’s “Naughty List,” as it was obviously put there by mistake. That seasonal room ended in January. When asked for a sneak peek into the next seasonal room, here was the Sparks’ response: “You want a sneak peek into the new room, eh? Well, much like our puzzles, our lips are sealed! We won’t tell you what it is, but we will say that all of our tables are round and good knights are in store for Downtown Frederick! It’ll to be a royally good time!” So, if you haven’t tried an escape room, let us be the first to say you must try one! is appropriate for families, friends, birthday parties, and other fun get-togethers. Work together to hone your detecting and sleuthing skills, with the hilariously punny Sparks family rooting for you the whole time.

Colin McGuire launched the Frederick Playlist in March 2014 with the goal of aiming a brighter spotlight on local musicians. A lifelong drummer, McGuire was motivated to start the website because what he sees as a vibrant music scene in Frederick still feels undiscovered and it fuels his personal love of music. “The music scene here is great and I just sort of wanted to help do my part in helping here is larger than people give it credit for, I always believed that it deserved more attention than it was getting.” McGuire believes that Frederick has the potential to be known nationally for its burgeoning music scene, so he is determined to do his part to help artists who can get bogged down by the norm—playing at the handful of bars that host music every now and then, and then fading into obscurity. McGuire hopes to help local musicians find inspiration to pursue music as a career, and provide them the means to do so. The mission behind Frederick Playlist is to bring each facet of the Frederick area music community together. Through photos, videos, podcasts, reviews, festival coverage, concert coverage, venue/artist profiles and a calendar of events that maps out where to find live local music, Frederick Playlist aims to be the most

The weather outside is frightful, the enthusiasm for resolutions is beginning to wane, and the thought of basking in the sun is sounding better and better! There are certainly many options to get away from it all, but most require an investment of some time, money, and/or some travel. While Frederick isn’t known for being the warmest place during the winter, a visit to one of three tropically inspired restaurants in town can certainly warm your belly‌no passport required.
36
Photography courtesy of Sabor de Cuba
Sabor de Cuba offers Frederick’s most authentic Cuban dining scene. The restaurant offers the aromas, flavors, art and, on some evenings, dance moves, that evoke the island’s rich culinary heritage. Owners Irieska Caetano and Angel Gattorno bring enthusiasm to their vision of sharing the Cuban culture with dining guests. As chef, Gattorno proudly shares the results of closely held family recipes while enhancing a menu of traditional Cuban favorites. It’s not uncommon to hear of diners who have traveled from nearby counties and states to eat at Downtown Frederick’s Sabor de Cuba. Driving more than an hour to get a taste of their ropa vieja or picadillo seems perfectly reasonable, considering the quality of the fare. Beyond the stellar food offerings, the restaurant’s Cuban scene is set by waitstaff dressed in classic Cuban shirts and original artwork by acclaimed Cuban artist Antonio Gattorno. A distant cousin of the chef, he is widely recognized as one of the founders of Cuba’s Modernist Movement. Gattorno played an important part in the development of a national identity in Cuban painting.

Just about a year ago, Chef Jorge Velasquez launched Mayta’s Peruvian Cuisine on Buckeystown Pike. Using only the freshest ingredients, Chef Velasquez studied the art of cooking in his homeland of Peru. Honoring the traditions of his ancestors, then combining that with a variety of new techniques, he created his own style of ceviche and other delicious foods. His is a unique taste that must be experienced. Diners are certain to find a dish that will soon become a favorite. If the winter doldrums have you amped to hit some waves but a trek to the nearest body of warm salt water isn’t in the cards, head over to Surf House Island Cantina in Urbana. Serving responsibly sourced food, Surf House is proudly involved in the NEVER, NEVER PROGRAM, which means they only serve proteins and produce that are pesticide-free, hormone-free and GMO-free. With a menu featuring such delights as the Kahuna Burger, a variety of fish tacos, and the aptly named Sunchild Salad, there is something for everyone. Dining among surfboards, beach art and tones of blue and white definitely set the stage, so even if you’re a shubie (someone that

When your dog or cat gets sick, they get rushed to the vet; but what happens when a hawk injures its leg or a turtle gets hit by a car? Frederick residents may take a trip down I-270 to the Second Chance Wildlife Center in Gaithersburg. For the last 20 years, the facility has helped rehabilitate more than 75,000 orphaned, ill or injured wildlife creatures. Center Director Jim Monsma said the center treats about 3,000 animals per year. In 2016, it had surpassed that number by October.

“Some of the animals, we save their life, but for some reason they can not survive in the wild,” Monsma continued, “they may be missing an eye or not be able to fly.” In that case, “we work with a group that adopts them and keeps them as their educational animals. They go around to schools, [but] not every animal is temperamentally suited for that.”

to celebrate love The premier FiND iT coloring contest was super fun and successful, especially for the winner fredlandia_1! ( Do an Instagram hashtag search for #coloritcolonial to see all the entries.) We were all so impressed with the many creative entries, that the staff of Colonial Jewelers decided to sponsor the page for this issue, too! The coloring page for this issue has love radiating every where! It’s just waiting for you to grab some colored pencils, markers, or crayons and creatively express your love in full color. All the rules for our old-school coloring contest are on the reverse of the coloring page, which is perforated for easy removal to give you easy access for coloring, posting, hanging proudly on your fridge, and maybe even framing? So just relax, enjoy the process and feel the color of love!
TIPS AND TOOLS Even if the last time you picked up a crayon was in kindergarten, coloring is like riding a bike, just jump in and you’ll be soothing your inner-child in no time! The rules are few, but the possible tools and techniques are many. + Crayons + Colored Pencils + Watercolor Pencils + Gel Pens + Markers
50
+ Pastels + Inexpensive eye shadow (they have great blending properties)
If you want to start tr ying some advanced techniques, add a blending pencil to help soften and blend colored pencils. Use different pressures and change directions when coloring to create a variety of textures. If you have wrist issues such as carpal tunnel, etc. try starting with low bleed markers...they don’t blend as well but they’re easier on your wrist. Breathe, color, relax, repeat.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no new age nonsense to be found in the science of holistic medicine. Recently, a few holistic health centers have opened in Frederick, introducing area residents to advancements in this field, including: Flotation Therapy, Zero Balancing and Infrared Rays. “Holistic healing is an approach to life [that] emphasizes the connection of the mind, body and spirit,” said Kym Grove, director of marketing for Holistic

FLOTATION THERAPY After years of chronic back pain, Tom Palermo, an admitted skeptic, visited a float spa in Hagerstown. To his own surprise (and relief), his pain immediately subsided and he began to research the industry of float spas and the benefits of sensory deprivation chambers. After traveling throughout the country, Tom and his wife, Alyssa, “wanted to make something worthy of Frederick. Float Frederick is the largest float center on the East Coast. The Palermos created five spacious float rooms, measuring 8 by 5 feet with an 8 foot ceiling and clear doors- certainly a long way from the cramped, enclosed pods that started it all! The benefits of flotation were well established in the 1950s, based on National Institutes of Health research, but the technology to create sensory deprivation chambers allowed for only small capsules for floating. 55

However, Float Frederick guests get to experience flotation in comfort and, dare we say, luxury! “With 800 pounds of Epsom salt in the 94.5 degree water, it creates an experience where your mind is free and your body gets to rest and heal,” said Tom Palermo, “the rooms are insulated from sound and ear plugs are provided.” More than 600 people have floated since it opened in September, and according to Palermo, “people love it...they come out with a smile and a glow that can last for days.” After floating, guests can visit the “Whisper Room” for comfy amenities, including a tea bar and adult coloring books, or use the “Primp and Grooming” stations with an ultra quiet hair dryer, lotion and leave-in conditioner. The Palermos “wanted guests to feel they could stay and relax after their flotation experience. [Guests] don’t have to go right out into the traffic of the day.” Float Frederick also offers hydro massage for those who need a little extra stress-relief!

ZERO BALANCING The Holistic Health Associate’s (HHA) team of acupuncturists, nutritionists, and massage therapists have worked around the world, gaining credentials in traditional as well as Eastern medicine. The HHA uses a powerful acupuncture therapy technique called “zero balancing,” which uses skilled touch to address the relationship between energy structures of the body. Developed by Fritz Smith, MD in the early 1970s, zero balancing uses finger pressure and gentle traction on areas of tension in bones, joints, and soft tissue to create points of balance, around which the body can relax and adjust. The therapy usually lasts about 30 to 45 minutes and the healing effects go beyond physical pain—as it is a treatment for emotional pain as well. “Recognized by the National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization to be successful in the treatment of a wide variety of medical problems, acupuncture is well known for its ability to diminish or eliminate acute and chronic pain. It is an effective treatment for anxiety,
depression, allergies, fertility, OB/GYN, skin, athletic enhancement, digestive/GI disorders, and addictions, “Grove said. She added that the HHA is ”proud to offer acupuncture as a safe, natural, drug-free and extremely effective form of holistic therapy.” Since 2005, HHA has served more than 9,500 people. HHA also partners with local businesses and organizations including Sol Yoga, Frederick County Bank, Illuminate Frederick and the Frederick News Post’s Best of the Best event.

INFRARED RAYS While traveling through Tennessee and California, Michelle Larkin, owner of Unit 8 Infrared Sauna Studio, stumbled upon an infrared sauna and found it improved her “overall health and well-being.” Larkin’s extensive background in healthcare guided her to “start [her own] business to help others in our community,” and thus, Unit 8 was created! Customers can enjoy a 45-minute session in a private sauna suite while enjoying Pandora or Netflix. Those of us looking to relax even more can visit the licensed massage therapist, Stacey Allgood-Smith, of Allgood Therapeutic Massage in the same building. Larkin explained that Infrared heat therapy uses infrared light to heat the body directly rather than just the air, which yields a deeper, more detoxifying sweat from a deeper skin cellular level where many toxins are stored. She’s not the only one to notice the theraputic nature of featured on various television programs, including Oprah with Dr. Oz, The Doctors, and the Ellen Show. Infrared saunas are also supported by the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society and the National Autism Association.

For the members of the Pinball Education Center, pinball is more than just an electronic box filled with lights and buzzers and music. The impact made by these machines reaches far beyond the flipper’s contact with that iconic metallic shiny ball. The greatness of the game, according to those at the center, lies in its educational and therapeutic qualities.
At the center, Pinball is not all fun and games; the goal is very serious. They partake in academic research, participate in community outreach via afterschool programs, social clubs, a Family Arcade, and foster a friendly, supportive atmosphere through mentor programs, leagues, and open play. The center even procures machines for families who would benefit beyond recreational purposes, like, households with autistic children, children with Down Syndrome, or neurological conditions like cerebral palsy. Driving the vision and presence of the center is founder Joe P. Said, who launched this organization in 2012. Said has 15 years of experience designing and providing assistive technologies to individuals with disabilities and founded GH Accessibility to further these ends. “I believe [pinball] has untapped potential and value as an educational and therapeutic tool. I want to share it with everyone,” Said states on the center’s website. Consider these therapeutic qualities of Pinball and the center: > With few exceptions, pinball machines are family friendly. > Development of hand-eye coordination > Refined bilateral coordination skills and motor planning > Development of both fine and gross motor control through repetitious movements > Increased attention span and visual memory > Encouragement of social interaction, turn-taking, and sportsmanship > Decreased anxiety For quite some time, the Pinball Education Center’s flagship location Now that they’re here and settled, this organization will bring its stated mission to “utilize the wonderful and unique game of pinball for the social enrichment, skill development and education of kids and young adults” to Frederick and our surrounding cities. The center hopes, due to Frederick’s equidistant location to Baltimore and Washington D.C., that they will become a hub for field trips and other educational ventures as well.
