For most people, summer means more outdoor activities, a casual style, and a slightly more laid-back attitude. Even though we may still be rushing from one activity to the next, somehow during these warmer months, it's not quite the same as the rest of the year. And with the easy, breezy days of summer, comes what seems like a more adventurous spirit as well! This summer, Frederick County is the place to be to indulge that desire for excitement. If it's your tastebuds that need tempted, then look no further than the many, many outstanding restaurants that are scattered rather generously around the county. The upcoming Farm to Fork event will give you opportunities to experience the bounty of local farms transformed in the creative hands of local chefs. Maybe you want to try something a little different? Frederick has you covered. With the opening of several new businesses, you can now experience the health benefits of salt caves and target practice at the new state-of-the-art indoor firing range (the only one in Frederick County). While the recent high temperatures and unusually frequent rain storms aren't on the top 10 list of things we love about this summer, it's not going to last forever. So get out there and enjoy these summer days while you still can. Before you know it we'll be lamenting the recent snow totals and dreaming of the summer to come!

This 11-day epicurean experience, to be held Aug. 28 through Sept. 7, highlights the culinary talents and agricultural variety of some of the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best chefs, growers and ranchers. SAVOR iT! Launched three years ago, Farm-to-Fork Frederick was an instant success and is an extension of Farm-to-Fork Loudoun, which began in 2011. Both events emphasize the locavore and farm-to-table movements that many are adopting for a healthier lifestyle and to help reduce their carbon footprint. Founder Miriam Nasuti changed her food philosophy after watching the documentary “Food, Inc." The candid perspective of America’s food industry was a game changer. “Everyone should watch it,” she said. "The documentary had a huge impact on me. We immediately started eating differently at home and sourcing our foods locally.” The bottom line is that some fruits and vegetables you purchase in a grocery store are estimated to travel 1,500 miles before they reach your plate. In many cases produce is harvested prematurely and ripened artificially, which has an affect on their nutritional value and overall taste. Further, if you consume meat, the humane treatment of animals is becoming increasingly more important. “I’m not a vegetarian or vegan but I want to know that when an animal is on this earth, that it was treated well, foraging freely,” Nasuti said.

“One night over a glass of wine at the Wine Kitchen in Leesburg, co-owner Jason Miller suggested that I expand my concept into other communities like Frederick,” she said. “He introduced me to The Downtown Frederick Partnership and that was the impetus in getting this moving. Everyone has been super positive and the response has been fantastic.” Eight restaurants have newly joined the event this year: Café Nola, Family Meal, Le Parc Bistro, Market Street Fusion, Nido Italian Ristorante and Pizza & Pretzel Creations. Also joining this year are Fitzgerald’s Shamrock Restaurant in Thurmont and Vintage in New Market. Mark your calendars and get out there to see what Frederick-area farmers and culinarians have to offer. As you may already know, a meal made with fresh local ingredients tastes phenomenal, especially when prepared by Frederick’s finest chefs. “One diner told me that they created their own culinary journey. They had appetizers, lunch, dinner and dessert at different restaurants to get a fuller experience,” Nasuti said. "I think that is a fun idea and a great way to taste as much as possible.”

This concept isn’t foreign to Frederick. As a county where agriculture is vital to the local economy, we have a special appreciation for where our food comes from and for those who cultivate it. SHARE iT! Myersville author Julie Gaver, founder of MUST LOVE SHOES , is an integral part of our “sole-ful” city. Gaver’s mission is to unite the women of our community in ways that make them feel welcome, loved and beautiful. Women are invited to join Must Love Shoes for its beach retreats, book clubs and the annual Soles for Love event. On Aug. 7, Must Love Shoes will present its fifth annual Soles for Love in the Gardens, an exclusive event that takes place in Gaver’s gorgeous gardens. Close to 160 guests congregate, bringing with them new shoes for boys and girls who need stable soles to wear. Each year brings a new theme for the event, and all guests are invited to dress the part. Women arrive in outfits to match the motif, which in previous years included “Birthstones” and “All White.” This year, guests will be coordinating with “Colors of the Sea.” This unique affair allows for guests to support three local groups that distribute donated sandals, sneakers and other shoes to children in Washington and Frederick counties, West Virginia, Virginia, and Pennsylvania just before they go back to school. These three groups include Project Alive, Children in Need in Washington County, and Girls Inc., an after-school program for at-risk girls. “It’s so much fun to see everyone dress up and come together,” Gaver said. “It’s a cool thing to see everyone contribute and watch the boxes just overflow. Guests can see exactly where their contributions are going to better our community.”

Each year brings more excitement than the last. One year, Julie’s relative transported 100 pairs of new shoes to Nigeria where the donations were distributed to a number of children in need. Another year, several guests arrived with 20 to 30 pairs of shoes each to donate. “It’s not about the shoes, but what you do with them!” Gaver said. As an author, Julie also partners with Downtown Frederick bookseller Curious Iguana to host book clubs for women to feel united with one another. The concept follows, “Women who...” and focuses on novels that make us relax, laugh or feel empowered. ViSiT iT! IN HIS MOST FAMOUS SONG, THE LATE JOHN DENVER SANG FONDLY OF THE MYSTIQUE, NOSTALGIA AND HISTORY OF WEST VIRGINIA’S COUNTRY ROADS. THE SONG REFERS TO ROADS THAT LEAD US NOT ONLY TO SPECIFIC DESTINATIONS, BUT ALSO TO PLACES WITHIN OUR HEARTS. Though the song is Denver’s, the sentiment behind it is by no means unique to either him, or to West Virginia. We find an allure in roads left mostly untouched by pavement, stoplights or rumble strips. On such roads we find a slower, more deliberate pace of life. We find charm and maybe a dash of romance. We may even find ourselves. Despite the exponential residential and retail growth of the Frederick County region in the last decade, you can find such roads here. Like many aspects of the simpler, quieter county of the past, these roads are in danger of vanishing forever. That’s where the group Friends of Rural Roads of Frederick County comes in. The purpose of the group is to ensure “that the scenic and historical elements of the agricultural and forested landscape is protected.”

“Our gravel roads must be known and loved by the citizens of Frederick County,” the group’s website states. Only by making the public more familiar with the roads can popular support for preservation be sustained. Awareness plays a large role in this mission. The Friends of Rural Roads of Frederick County works with residents, private businesses, community leaders and passionate volunteers to advocate for our rural roads, and to educate the public about their value to the community. Pursuant to that, the Friends are constantly researching local unpaved byways to discover and share their history. The group also sponsors public activities, such as photo contests, dog walks, wildflower tours and antique car drives along endangered roads several times each year. The goal is to demonstrate the appeal of the 90 miles of such roads in Frederick County.

The Friends came into being in 2002, when county government adopted the Rural Roads Program. The program, which provides conditional protection for selected local roads, can be nullified by adjoining landowners. Public support is crucial, since 60 percent of adjoining landowners may request a road’s removal from the program.

Those wishing to tour the roads on their own time can download maps and descriptions for self-guided tours on the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s website. (Tours of the rural roads along one of the five recommended routes take between two and four hours.) The preservation effort is as much about science as it is about local history. Inefficient maintenance of the roads in the Rural Roads Program is a major concern to homeowners. In response, starting in 2009, Frederick County has experimented with a driving surface aggregate. The mixture, applied wet to the selected road, is a mixture of limestone of various sizes. Once applied it is flattened by a roller. Aesthetically, the result appears virtually the same as that of a standard gravel road, but the surface is more durable and requires less maintenance over time. It is also environmentally sound, according to the Friends of Rural Roads, because it produces less toxic runoff than would other methods and asphalt. Ausherman Road. Rum Spring Road. Shoemaker Road. More than three years ago, Rob and Stephanie Krop, along with another couple, Matt and Hailey Jones were spending many weekend hours traveling out of Frederick County to target practice at an indoor firing range. During one of those long commutes, the idea to bring an indoor firing range to Frederick County was sparked, and soon the enthusiastic and driven couples set their sights on making that dream a reality. After some research, informal polling of the local community, and several intense planning sessions, it seemed that an indoor range would be well received and a welcome addition to the Frederick County business community. Preliminary grassroots marketing had the range boasting more than 10,000 fans on Facebook and 600 paid members before the opening date was even set. Some members anxiously waited more than a year before they could even set foot in the range.

This is not your typical indoor range. The lobby welcomes visitors with over sized black leather benches, video screens with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rules of the Range,â&#x20AC;? and amazing art canvases that feature the stunning photography of employee Ryan Burkett. The impressive space has 12, 25-yard shooting lanes, classrooms with on-site licensed instructors, and a well-stocked store selling guns, ammunition, safes and accessories. The Machine Gun Nest charges $18 per hour or $250 for an annual membership. Ammunition, paper targets and firearms are offered for sale and rent on-site, though customers are welcome to bring their own equipment. A variety of firearms are available for shooting by folks who have always wanted to test-fire a particular type of weapon. Among the guns for instruction and rental will be fully automatic firearms such as M16s, AK47s, P90s, MP5s and Thompson submachine guns. The Machine Gun Nest is the perfect place to improve your skills or to get detailed instruction if you are new to shooting. A full list of available classes can be found on their website. Also in the plans is the establishment of a variety of teams for possible competition. The Krops and the Joneses are all range safety officers certified through the National Rifle Association, as is every staff member. They all agree that their goal is to provide a place for safe, responsible gun use and ownership.

The Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Canal, a 184-mile towpath, is actually one of the top 10 most visited national parks. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had the pleasure of walking it, biking it and using it as an access point to canoe the Potomac River. And recently, my wife and I had the opportunity to connect with the C&O Canal in a different way, by staying in one of its lockhouses. These buildings are a small sampling of the more than 1,300 historic structures within the linear park. Staying at a lockhouse allows you to experience history in a unique way. Six lockhouses have been restored and are available for rent. Overnight accommodations range from rustic to nostalgic and are located anywhere from just a few miles outside Washington, D.C., all the way out to Clear Spring in Washington County. One exists in Frederick County, near Point of Rocks. WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

OVER THE EDGE! We stayed the night in Lockhouse 10, near Cabin John. Our accommodations were inviting, warm and cozy, reminding me of the comforts of grandma’s house. It had a 1930s décor, from the kitchen appliances to the bathroom fixtures, as well as electricity, heating and air and running water. In an age when most households have multiple television sets and electronic devices everywhere, it was nice to get away from that for a short period of time. It truly felt as if we were miles away from civilization. I loved the old-fashioned radio, even if it just picked up one station. We enjoyed playing old board games, flipping through the classic recipe book, checking out the Civilian Conservation Corps memorabilia adorning the various rooms, and sitting inside the screened-in front porch taking in the cool night air. Although I must admit the bed did not conjure up thoughts of a five-star hotel. Staying in a lockhouse can be a perfect romantic getaway for a couple or a family with kids. It could also make for a great group outing, such as a girls weekend or scout overnight. Lockhouse 10 was our first Canal Quarters experience, but it won’t be our last. Since each has been furnished to represent a different time period, we plan to experience the evolution and story of the canal by staying in others. Hopefully, you will as well.

A Dream Comes True in West Virginia Words by Maureen Dowdell

OVER THE EDGE! "What brings us joy is what we ought to be doing.” This thought resonated for Mt. Airy resident, Teresa Shattuck, a researcher and evaluator in the public health and education sectors. Teresa, her husband, Rich, and their two children, Zach, 19, and Casey, 16, spend a great deal of time in the outdoors. Teresa’s family owned a cabin at Great Cacapon, W.Va. and the couple had been inviting family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances to the area for 25 years to share the “inherently healing experience” they had felt there. “Nature has this magical impact that what really matters starts to surface, that is a sense of relationship, community, trust and love,” Teresa said, “as all the angst of suburban living starts to fall away.” Rich had observed it, too. A teacher and school administrator for 20 years, he had led many camping trips for students. “Nature is a fabulous, healing thing,” he said. “In our crazy, stressed-out world, it makes a difference to take some time to reconnect with nature and let nature do its thing.” THE STUFF OF DREAMS

The couple met in graduate school at the University of Maryland, where Rich attained his master’s degree in Educational Planning and Administration. In 1991, while Teresa was working on her master’s degree in Public Health, she wrote a paper about creating a retreat center in West Virginia: A place that she envisioned “to help people reconnect with nature.” And well, life went on. Teresa earned her doctorate in Community and Public Health. The couple settled in Mt. Airy, Md. They had their hands full raising two children, building their careers and starting a public health and education consulting business, Shattuck & Associates. Over the years, they talked casually about maybe someday making Teresa’s dream a reality. But, when Rich lost his sister, Kathy Shattuck, to cancer about seven years ago, it inspired them to take the leap. “When something like that happens,” Rich said, “you learn that life is short. We just thought it was time to pursue a dream.” Teresa agreed: “I just had a sense that she would have said, ‘Do it because you don’t know how long you’ve got.” “We were just hoping to have a reasonably priced place where people can come and be comfortable and be in nature,” Rich said.

In 2012, the Shattucks took out a home equity loan and used their savings to purchase a 14-acre riverfront property in West Virginia, in the watershed area of the Potomac River, opposite Maryland’s Green Ridge State Forest. And Three Otters Eco Retreat (TOER) was born. “We thought Three Otters was as good an investment as putting money in stocks or the bank, and we thought it was a more environmentally, naturefriendly way to use our money,” Rich said. The family pitched in to help. Casey, a sophomore at South Carroll High School, shot wildlife photography for the website. Zach worked full-time as the mainstay of the retreat for the past three years. He’s now a freshman at Frostburg State University majoring in wildlife and fishery. Three Otters Eco Retreat opened on Memorial Day 2014. It was a soft opening with no ribbon-cutting ceremony, fanfare or advertising. Rich and Teresa simply held a high school graduation party for their son. They invited family, friends and the staff from their other business. And word of mouth soon spread.

The Shattucks founded TOER on the belief that “great things happen in nature.” “There’s a profound transformation that can happen in people within just the course of a weekend,” Teresa said. “Families would come with their young children… The parents are nervous on Friday night. The kids are nervous. They’re afraid of the river. They’re afraid of bugs. They’re afraid of everything. By Sunday, the kids are crying because they don’t want to come out of the river. The parents are 10 times more relaxed.” Observing the positive shift that happens when people spend time in nature fueled the Shattucks’ mission to help people disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature. “We want people to come and have a great time and walk away smarter about nature and stewardship,” Teresa said. “Through example and the beauty of the environment, we hope people will take classes and learn how to kayak and become more sensitive to what we need to do to have a relationship with the natural world.”

WHY THREE OTTERS? “We’d been kicking around names,” said Rich. While hiking with a friend on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Towpath, a trail that runs 185-miles along the Potomac River, Teresa spotted three otters sitting on a log in the canal. “It was two adults and a baby, and I naturally assumed it was a mom and dad and baby, and the adults were kissing on the baby’s head,” Teresa said. “They so represent the joy and playfulness that we see nature bring out in people.” The whimsical scene inspired the name and logo for “Three Otters Eco Retreat.”

The Shattucks hope to eventually blend their two businesses and expand offerings at TOER to include structured programming such as yoga and stress management retreats, meeting facilitation and strategic planning: “To overlay our research skill into connecting people with nature,” Teresa said. “We need data to better understand what nature is doing to us and how it heals spiritually and psychically.” Three Otters Eco Retreat opens each year on Memorial Day and closes in the middle of September.

Three vintage trailers, three tent cottages, a camping village and a yurt. WHAT IS A YURT?

Yurts are traditional portable dwellings used by nomadic tribes in Central Asia for the past three thousand years. A circular, screened-in structure sheltered by a fabric that wraps around a wooden accordion frame, this particular yurt features tongue and groove hardwood flooring. It is 20-feet in diameter with about 215 square feet of floor space—enough room for a queen-sized bed and queen-sized sofa bed. “We have portable camping bunks, so we have lots of bedding we can move in and out of there,” Teresa said. “What we love about this one is that it has so many windows opening to nature,” Teresa said. The yurt overlooks the river. “Our vision was to have a space where you were very comfortable and secure, but you felt like you were outside,” she said. “They are very wind- and rain-resistant. There is something about the circle, no corners just, sort of shaped like the earth.”

• A bathhouse and a grill pavilion that houses outdoor grills, a kitchen, a refrigerator and a screened-in seating area for 25 people. • Water, firewood and an icemaker are available onsite. • Electricity is installed at some of the sites. • Cell service is spotty.
