Halloween revelers pose for pictures at the William Talley Recreation Center.

Second Annual Halloween In Baker Park by: Nancy Adkins, City of Frederick Parks and Recreation Department photography Courtesy: Bill Adkins

Baker Park comes alive with ghosts, goblins, and creatures of the night on Wednesday, October 27th, Thursday, October 28th and Friday, October 29th. We think you will find our Halloween spirits, ghosts, goblins, and the all-new Halloween Tale to your liking as you twist and wind your way through the park. You never know what will happen by the bell tower at night, along the creek, under the bridge, by the 14

FALL 2010

swings, inside the witches’ kitchen, and along the path as you walk to the next location. By the lake, the lamp-lights are lit just enough to see what is coming next. Halloween characters throughout the park will always do the unexpected so don’t let your guard down! Finally there is relief when you enter the Boat House for treat bags and maybe some relaxation.

”Zombies” from The Dance Unlimted Repertory Company perform Michael Jackson’s classic Thriller at the band shell.

Tour guides will lead you throughout the park. Be chilled as they tell ghost and spirit stories about Baker Park and the Frederick area, fiction or not ….you be the judge! And if you came last year, you’ll find this year is different, so expect surprises. The evening is filled with Halloween fun and performances. Keep an eye out for The Fredericktown Players throughout the park. Their presence will be felt by one and all—when you least expect it! Make sure to allow time in your schedule to come early or stay late after your tour to see the free performances in the band shell by The Dance Unlimited Repertory Company under the direction of Donna Grim. They will present three evenings of heart-stopping, spine-chilling dances created especially for this event. Each evening will showcase different Halloween-themed choreography from

favorites like “Monster Mash”, “Purple People Eater”, “Somebody’s Watching Me”, and Michael Jackson’s Thriller album. DON’T WAIT—register early as time slots sold out last year! Registration is open now for the guided Halloween tours through Baker Park. Tours are scheduled for 6:30PM, 7:00PM, 7:30PM, 8:00PM plus an 8:30PM tour on Friday night only. All tours last about forty-five to fifty minutes. Register by calling the William Talley Recreation Center at 301-600-1492. The cost is $6 for City residents and $8 for non-City residents. Come and help us celebrate Halloween in Baker Park, one of the many special events brought to you by the City of Frederick Department of Recreation.

Relocating with your Pet by: Linda Shea, Humane Educator, Frederick County Animal control Center

Frederick County Animal Control is the county’s animal shelter, centrally located within Frederick city limits at 1832 Rosemont Avenue, across from Ft. Detrick. We are open-admission and take in an average of 6,000 animals every year. Of those, a significant number are relinquished because owners are moving or relocating.

will keep them protected if they stray from home during the moving process. Spaying and neutering will prevent unwanted animals by preventing undesirable behavior—your pet is less likely to run away if they are altered. choose pet-friendly

Some owners try to convince themselves that their pet is better off not going through the stress of a move. But the truth is that your pet wants to be with you…unconditionally. A move or relocation is temporary. A family should be forever. Here are some tips to help you keep your pet and reduce some of the stress involved as a result of moving or relocating:

Visit us now

It will save time later. It is much better to know where your local animal shelter is prior to needing us. This will facilitate things, and reduce stress, should your pet get lost during a move. ID, PLEaSe

Make sure your pet has an ID tag and/or microchip and that the information is current. Moving involves a change in routine. Companion animals develop a sense of security through a consistent routine and familiar environment. Moving can cause them to react unpredictably, and that includes escaping. Every animal that is brought to our shelter is scanned for a microchip. Consider having your pet microchipped at your veterinarian’s office or call us for information on our low-cost microchip clinics held several times a year. consider temporary boarding

This is an option many pet owners overlook or think is too expensive. However, boarding a pet in an accredited facility keeps them safe and cared for during a time when you are focused on boxes and packing tape. spay/neuter/vaccinate

In the event you choose to board your pet, many boarding facilities require that your animal be current on vaccinations. A rabies vaccine is required by Maryland State law for all dogs, cats, and ferrets four months and older. Other vaccine requirements vary among boarding facilities. Even if you choose not to board your pet, current vaccines 16

Look for pet-friendly residences to avoid having to give up your furry family member. If you find a landlord reluctant to allow pets, ask your current landlord for a letter of recommendation addressing the fact your pet is well-behaved, crate-trained, etc. Planning ahead, being creative, and utilizing resources wisely can keep your family together, including the members with fur, fins, and feathers. Moving is your decision—giving up your pet doesn’t have to be. For more information, contact the Frederick County Animal Control Division at 301-600-1546.

Festive and Free Holiday Happenings One of the many gingerbread houses in competition for top prize.

By: TifFany ahalt, Tourism council of Frederick County Photography courtesy: Frederick County Historic Sites Consortium Frederick County is a wonderful place to indulge in all the splendor of the holiday season. Many consider annual holiday events to be part of their overall family traditions. These holiday events tie into Frederick’s history, are free to the public, and appeal to all ages. Celebrate Frederick organizes spectacular free events year round, but none are more beloved than holiday events scheduled throughout the month of December. Kickoff the holiday season by attending the annual Scents and Sweets competition where locals

compete in design and construction of amazing gingerbread houses and floral displays. Various categories are offered for professionals and amateurs of all ages. A reception is open to the public where judging takes place along with refreshments and sounds of the holiday season. This year’s event, scheduled for December 2, takes place at the Frederick Cultural Arts Center in downtown Frederick. Did you know that many of the original settlers in Fredericktown were German? IN THE COMMUNITY by attending the annual Kris Kringle Procession which takes place this year on December 10. The parade route starts at East Street, winds its way through the historic district and ends at Baker Park, where a tree lighting ceremony and other entertainment takes place. Be sure to listen to the sounds of the season as John Widmann plays bells housed in the city’s very own carillon.

Frederick County is home to twenty-two historic sites and museums, with more than half participating in the annual Museums by Candlelight event on Saturday, December 11.

Attendees are encouraged to fall in behind the parade participants as they travel the parade route. View hundreds of local children dressed as reindeer, snowflakes, angels, elves, and gifts. In addition to the modern characters, such as Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the parade also includes characters that reflect Frederick’s German heritage. These include the Snow Queen, Pelsnickle, and Weinacht Man, who helps Kris Kringle judge whether children have been good or bad. Krist Kindle is an

Are you interested in holiday traditions of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries? Frederick County is home to twenty-two historic sites and museums, with more than half participating in the annual Museums by Candlelight event on Saturday, December 11. Decorated for the holidays, participating museums waive admission fees and offer an afternoon and evening of traditional holiday activities in historic settings. Several locations will have their gift shops open for your holiday shopping.

FREDERICK COUNTY HISTORY

An H & F Trolley that was used to transport passengers between Middletown and Myersville, Maryland.

Myersville Trolley Festival History, Music, and Fun for All

FALL 2010

The 17th annual Myersville Trolley Festival will be held October 16th and 17th, from 10:00AM to 5:00PM daily. The festival celebrates the history of Myersville and the history of the H & F Trolley that was such an integral part of the growth and development of this small, but vibrant community. Nestled on the side of South Mountain, in the upper Middletown Valley, the town of Myersville is a community of 1,700 people. The festival is located on a hillside overlooking the town with stunning views of the Valley.

In October of 1898, the first trolley made its way over Catoctin Mountain at Braddock Heights, traveled through Middletown and then went north into the quiet little community of Myersville. Six years later the trolley line from Myersville to Hagerstown was completed, thus connecting Myersville with Frederick and Hagerstown, and life in the little community changed forever. Nearly 100 years later, long after the last trolley car rumbled over the tracks, residents of the Myersville community got together to plan a festival that would celebrate the trolley and what it meant to the town. This year, the Myersville Trolley Festival highlights the history of the trolley and the restored Trolley Car 150, one of the cars that ran from Hagerstown to Frederick. Car 150 was restored and sits on tracks near the roadbed where the trolley once ran.The trolley car had been found abandoned, was transported the festival grounds and restored by Don Easterday.

The Trolley shuttle stop

The Trolley Festival has something for everyone, featuring over seventy-five arts and crafts vendors, a wide variety of food vendors, hayrides, trolley rides through town on a motorized trolley car, and demonstrations of traditional crafts. For the past three years, the festival has also featured a Bluegrass competition. This year the competition will be bigger than ever with Bluegrass music on both days. The music begins on Saturday with the sounds of Tara Lindhardt and Friends Bluegrass Band. The competition takes place on Sunday afternoon. For kids there will be pony rides and wagon and hayrides. There will also be a magician, climbing wall, face painting, clowns, juggling, hands-on crafts, and a Punch and Judy show. Demonstrators include Early American Games, Jefferson Clockworks, local astronomers, and model airplane groups. Food vendors include JB Seafood with oyster sandwiches, crab cakes, and soups. There will also be barbecue, ice cream and Italian ice, kettle corn, dumplings, pies, country ham sandwiches, and pizza.

Youngsters playing in the kernel corn box.

Along with the Bluegrass competition on Sunday is the popular auction featuring Amish quilts, train memorabilia, artwork donated by local artists, collectibles, and Trolley Festival crocks and pottery. Myersville is located at exit 42 off I-70. After exiting go north on Route 17, which becomes Main Street until you get to a stop sign in front of the white church. Continue straight on Canada Hill Road for roughly 1/2 mile. Follow the Trolley Festival signs. FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE

HOUSING & REAL ESTATE

See a LendEr First! by: Jay Decker

I’ve been in the housing industry in one capacity or another for nearly thirty years. I currently sell upscale condominiums in the Kentlands for the developer. In all my time in the real estate business it never ceases to amaze me how many consumers start looking at homes before they know what the undertaking will cost. It is even more perplexing to see my fellow real estate agents dragging people all over town, looking at properties, all the while not knowing if their clients qualify to buy what they are showing. This is the epitome of the “getting the cart before the horse” scenario. Why would you put someone in your car, drive all over town, and raise expectations of people that may not even be qualified to buy? When I meet, greet, and probe prospects at the sales center, even if they are accompanied by a real estate agent, I always ask, “Has anyone taken the time to show you how much this transaction will cost, so that you’ll know when you are ready?” The majority of the time they respond that no one has given them a detailed estimate of what “like kind” properties will cost. Therefore I am usually the one who enlightens them regarding “how much” and “how much?” It has been my experience that most people, especially first-time buyers, want to

know two things: How much money do I need to purchase and how much do I need every month for the mortgage payment? Once buyers know those two things they are liberated to make a purchase decision. With that said, wouldn’t it be prudent for potential buyers to sit down and discuss their financial situation with an experienced mortgage professional prior to looking at homes? By so doing the buyer ascertains what they can afford, how much money is required, what the potential payments would be, and if their credit history is in compliance with current mortgage underwriting guidelines that seem to constantly change in these financially-challenging times. When a potential purchaser enters my sales center carrying a prequalification letter I am heartened, knowing that they are probably able to purchase. Most sellers will feel the same way. Upon knowing that buyers are able to purchase, our only task is to make them ready and willing. Moral of the story: See a lender first! child care & education

CHILD CARE & EDUCATION

Learning when school’s in session and what to do when it’s not By: Dr. Linda D. Burgee, Superintendent, Frederick County Public Schools PHOTOGRAPHY courtesy of Frederick County Public Schools

FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE

35

CHILD CARE & EDUCATION Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) has launched a new way to keep families informed when weather causes delayed school opening, early dismissal, or cancellation: text messaging via FindOutFirst. And we’ve activated a special web page to help families make the most of days when students can’t attend school (www.fcps.org/SnowDay). As snow enters the forecast in coming months, parents want to know how to learn whether school’s in session, how FCPS makes the decision to open or close, and when they can expect to find out. Living in Maryland’s largest and most geographically diverse county means that when roads are clear in downtown Frederick they may be treacherous in Brunswick, Emmitsburg, Mt. Airy, and Myersville. When bad weather arrives, the school system’s first concern is safe travel. Maximizing instructional time is second. Experience has shown that basing decisions on weather predictions would result in unnecessary loss of valuable school time. Too often forecasts predict far worse conditions than occur, so FCPS rarely decides whether to close schools the night before.

School CLosing Rules

When school opening is delayed two hours due to inclement weather: • Breakfast is still served. • Pre-k students attend ninety-minute sessions. Morning sessions start two hours late and dismiss one hour later than usual, while afternoon sessions start one hour later than usual and dismiss at the regular time. • Morning Career & Technology Center classes start two hours late and dismiss about one hour later than usual. Afternoon CTC sessions start forty minutes later than usual and dismiss at the regular time. • If an early dismissal was planned to accommodate a Teacher Work Session, FCPS will typically postpone the early dismissal until another day and, on the delayed- opening day, keep students in school until their regular dismissal time. When schools close two hours early due to bad weather: • Lunches are served. • Morning pre-k students stay at school for dismissal with full-day students. • Afternoon pre-k and Career & Technology Center (CTC) programs are canceled; CTC students stay at their home schools. Flexible Evening High and Heather Ridge Twilight programs are canceled. For more information: FCPS Regulation 400-2 at www.fcps.org.

36

FALL 2010

As soon as a weather decision is made, Transportation launches a “calling tree” to notify more than 30 radio and TV outlets. The first call is to FCPS Communication Services to activate the employee hotline.

Instead our Transportation staff talks with county and state highway departments about their observations and their plans to deploy resources to clear roads. We confer with neighboring school districts in the direction from which inclement weather is coming. Then we get first-hand information on local conditions, driving roads around the county as early as 3:30AM. All this is to determine—by 5:00AM— whether buses can transport 30,000 students that day and whether walkers can navigate their routes within acceptable safety standards. As soon as the decision is made, Transportation launches a “calling tree” to notify more than thirty radio and TV outlets. The first call is to FCPS Communication Services to activate the employee hotline, send FindOutFirst text and e-mail, and post bulletins on www.fcps.org and FCPS Television (Comcast cable-18 and online), in English and Spanish. When bad weather moves in after school has begun, we must typically make an early-closing decision by 10:00AM to give drivers time to cover all their elementary, middle, and high school routes. Teach children what to do if school closes when you are not home. Give the school the name and number of someone nearby who is usually available. Keep your school emergency contact information up to date. Remember that all after-school and evening activities are canceled when schools close for inclement weather or when the snowemergency plan is in effect in Frederick County. This includes events that outside groups schedule in FCPS buildings except childcare programs, which decide and communicate their own schedules. Finally, when weather keeps children from traveling, take a virtual visit to the FCPS web site for fun ideas to make the most of your child’s day. Get tips for starting a snow journal, planning a snow fort, comparing temperatures around the world, and lots more. Children thrive on opportunities to learn, and the snow brings many! FCPS will continue to offer ways to help you learn whether school’s in session—and fun activities that keep students learning even when they’re at home.

CHILD CARE & EDUCATION

Respectful Caregiving for Infants By: Denise Lanza Murtha, Department Head, Infant-Toddler Montessori Program, Meadows Montessori

Who doesn’t love a cute bouncing baby? Their precious smiles and engaging coos endear them to us in countless ways. We love to cuddle, rock, and kiss their downy soft heads. We handle them carefully and speak softly. We feed them when they are hungry, diaper them when needed, and pick them up for a hug when they cry.

“Children are human beings to whom respect is due, superior to us by reason of their innocence and of the greater possibilities of their future.” — Maria Montessori

Is there more to do? Have we shown them respect? What does respect even look like at this age? Most of us believe our kindness and concern for these small members of society is a sign of respect. In the most traditional way, it seems to have been enough for us, our parents, and grandparents before us. Now let us think back to our own childhoods and remember how we felt. Did we feel we had choices and control over our own lives, or did we feel helpless and powerless?

Think of an 8-month old baby sitting content on the floor playing with a favorite toy. You know that he is due for a diaper change, so you go over, pick him up and gently carry him to the changing table. You begin to undress him while you converse with others in the room. The baby fusses and you shake a rattle over his head to distract him so you can finish up. There—job complete! Or is it? Do you think the baby felt respected? Our children deserve so much more. Make them a part of the caregiving routines in their lives. Include them in your conversation. Tell them what is happening.

44

FALL 2010

Before picking them up, say, “I am going to pick you up now; I need to change your diaper.” Talk through the process taking place––in all the moments of caregiving, whether changing, feeding, bathing, or dressing. Include them, don’t just do to them. This is the beginning of respect.

Denise Murtha, Department Head at Meadows Montessori, holds an Associate Infant and Toddler Credential awarded by the American Montessori Society. She has worked with children, birth to age three, for twenty years, with the past thirteen inside the Montessori classroom. She also serves as a Montessori Field Consultant and teacher trainer for the Institute of Advanced Montessori Studies in Silver Spring, MD during the summer months.

MEADOWS MONTESSORI: A NEW Childcare Option in Frederick

Meadows Montessori is proud to be the first to offer a Montessori program for children ages six months to five years old in the Frederick community. Our infant-toddler program, like our preschool program, is based on the Montessori method of learning through hands-on experiences in the environment and is based on respectful, responsive, and reciprocal care giving for children. Contact Meadows Montessori at 301-662-8910 or visit them on the web at www.meadowscenter.com.

“Stop Smoking for Life” Classes offered for free By: Kelsey Russ, Tobacco Prevention Specialist, Frederick County Health Department

Are you a smoker hoping to quit but can’t seem to do it on your own? If you’re motivated, sign up today for the “Stop Smoking for Life” program at the Frederick County Health Department, Substance Abuse Division. We know quitting takes hard work and a lot of effort because nicotine is a very addictive drug. It often takes smokers six to nine attempts before really being able to quit, but it’s worth it. Quitting smoking is the best thing you can do for your health. We understand the keys to success are education, planning, and support. The “Stop Smoking for Life” cessation program offers behavior modification techniques to help you deal with the challenges of quitting. Classes are facilitated by compassionate, encouraging, and supportive individuals who help you determine methods to quit that best fit your lifestyle. Topics covered include: • Benefits of Quitting • Nicotine Addiction • Nicotine Replacement Therapy • Preparing to Quit • Coping with Withdrawal • Dealing with Stress • Weight Management (Nutrition and Exercise) • Relapse Prevention

Law bans hand-held cell phone use by:: LORA RAKOWSKI, MARYLAND STATE HIGHWAY ADMINSTRATION

Beginning October 1, a new Maryland law takes effect banning the use of hand-held mobile phones while driving. Coupled with the texting ban that went into effect last October, the laws offer a powerful assault against a leading cause of traffic crashes and injuries —distracted driving. According to a 2006 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study, the risk of a crash or nearcrash increases by nearly thirty percent when a driver is engaged in a cell phone conversation and more than doubles while a call is being dialed. Still, more people than ever before continue to use cell phones while driving. The US Department of Transportation estimates that nationally, 800,000 vehicles were driven by someone who used a hand-held cell phone in 2008. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports that sixty-seven percent of drivers admitted to talking on their cell phones within the last thirty days while behind the wheel, and twenty-one percent of drivers indicated they had read or sent a text or e-mail message, a figure that rose to forty percent for those drivers under the age of thirty-five. “Even our best drivers, those who buckle up, obey speed limits, and always avoid impaired and aggressive driving are often guilty when it comes to driving while distracted,” said Maryland State Highway Administrator and Governor’s Highway Safety Representative Neil J. Pedersen. “Distracted drivers endanger all of us—and in fact international studies equate texting while driving with drunk driving. The best practice is to avoid ALL cell phone use while behind the wheel—focus and just drive.” More frightening than the frequency of distracted driving is its consequences: a study from the Harvard Center of Risk Analysis

60

FALL 2010

estimates that cell phone use while driving contributes to six percent of all crashes nationwide, equating to approximately 636,000 crashes, 330,000 injuries, 12,000 serious injuries and 2,600 deaths each year. Here in Maryland during 2008, inattentive drivers caused more than 23,700 crashes that left more than 11,600 people injured—thirty-five fatally. “The good news is that most crashes, including distracted driving crashes, never need to happen and can be prevented by making the right choices,” said Pedersen. “We have a campaign dedicated to that premise and ask Maryland drivers to ‘Choose Safety for Life’ and B-SAFE: Buckle up, Slow down, Always drive sober, Focus and Everyone to share the road.” Also beginning October 1, a new set of bicycle safety laws encourage drivers and bicyclists to share the road. The new law mandates that drivers provide at least three feet of distance when passing a bicyclist—important especially considering that the wind generated by a passing car alone can fell a bicyclist. The provision also allows bicyclists to ride along the roadway rather than the shoulder (except in the case that a designated bike lane exists). Other new laws affecting traffic operations: • Beginning October 1, plug-in vehicles can use HOV lanes in Maryland. • When approaching a stopped emergency vehicle on the shoulder or travel lane, motorists should move away to the next travel lane when it is safe to do so. For more information about the new laws and safe driving practices, please log on to www.choosesafetyforlife.com.

The Delaplaine:

A V isual F east By: Tim Ryan, Manager of Special projects, The delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center

When you think of art, education, movies, parties, shopping, historic architecture, fun stuff to keep your mind active, and your kids engaged all under one roof—the place that should come to mind is the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center. Situated at the east end of Carroll Creek Linear Park, the Delaplaine serves county residents in a number of ways and welcomes an evergrowing number of visitors from around the region and the globe. The center’s mission is to provide the Frederick region with educational

opportunities and experiences in the visual arts through classes, exhibits, and programs and they do so with enthusiasm and creative flare. Each year, the Delaplaine offers over two hundred and fifty classes for more than fifteen hundred students of all ages and levels of experience. The center houses spacious classroom studios for drawing, painting, ceramics, woodworking, photography, printmaking, jewelry, and crafts—populated year round with adult students and young summer campers alike. ARTS & LEISURE

“We strive to maintain a balance between the familiar and the avantgarde, the local and the regional, and the professional and the amateur artist,” explained Manager of Exhibits Diane Sibbison. “We have a full schedule of multi-media, multi-skill, multi-cultural exhibitions and over thirty-eight thousand people benefit from our services.” Jessica Hibbard, Communications Director at the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce and Delaplaine Board member, put it this way: “We’re fortunate in Frederick to enjoy the cultural amenities of a much larger metro area. The Delaplaine is a big part of that equation: amazing galleries, top-notch classes, fun activities for artists of all ages, and one of the best event spaces in downtown Frederick. Residents and visitors alike are discovering this creative mecca.”

One of the more than 1,500 students a year taking part in Delaplaine art education.

Young student finds his inner artitst at the Delaplaine.

In addition to the regular roster of classes and camps, the center provides free art courses for approximately five hundred economically disadvantaged children and teens, and mentally or physically challenged adults each year. Additionally, seniors can receive free tuition under a generous grant from M&T Bank. “We are a full-service arts center and community organization,” explained Director of Instruction Sarah Higgins, “determined to reach out to people regardless of age, race, economic status, or physical abilities.” Over fifty exhibitions are shown at the Delaplaine each year in eight different galleries. Artists living and working around the region are invited to submit exhibit proposals for solo and group shows. A number of juried exhibit opportunities are also available throughout the year. Annual exhibits such as the Frederick All-County Public School Show allows area students a chance to display their work, take pride in their accomplishments, and appreciate the accomplishments of others. 66

ARTS & LEISURE

Celebrating the Arts and artists of frederick County By: Shaun Butcher, Executive Director, Frederick Arts COuncil

2010 has been an exciting year for the arts community in Frederick as people across the state and country have taken notice of our thriving arts community. In March, Downtown Frederick’s Arts and Entertainment District was recognized with the Outstanding Achievement Award by the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development. In addition, the City of Frederick was ranked as a Top 25 Small Arts City by American Style Magazine. However, since Frederick’s founding, creativity and craftsmanship has been at the forefront of Frederick’s existence. Artists of all disciplines have contributed to Frederick’s success as a center of creativity and arts destination for many decades. That is why each fall the Frederick Arts Council hosts an annual Celebration of the Arts dinner. This year, the event will be held on Wednesday, October 20, at Ceresville Mansion. The event is open to the public and serves as a major opportunity to gather artists, arts patrons, and other stakeholders together. The keynote speaker is John Schratwieser, Executive Director of Maryland Citizens for the Arts. It is also expected that Frederick native Bobby Steggert will attend the event. Steggert, a Broadway performer, was recently nominated for a Tony Award. 68

FALL 2010

One of the highlights of the dinner each year is the official acknowledgement of the arts groups and nonprofit organizations that will receive Community Arts Development (CAD) grants by the Frederick Arts Council. It is expected that over $35,000 will be distributed to approximately twenty different arts organizations and nonprofit agencies with arts projects and programming. We are particularly excited to announce a new opportunity to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the artistic ethos of our community. At the dinner, the inaugural class of the Frederick County Arts Hall of Fame will be announced. The Arts Hall of Fame honors persons, living or deceased, who have made significant contributions to the arts in Frederick County, either as performing or practicing artists in individual disciplines. The Frederick County Arts Hall of Fame will take up residence at the Cultural Arts Center, a 14,000 square foot arts incubator and community arts space in downtown Frederick. At the Cultural Arts Center, a plaque will be placed with an image and biographical sketch of each member of the Hall of Fame. This will provide an educational opportunity for the general public and further recognition. The Frederick Arts Council will name no more than four members to the Hall of Fame in any one year. The Celebration of the Arts dinner takes place each October in honor of National Arts and Humanities Month. Other activities take place throughout the month as well that highlight the burgeoning arts community in Frederick County. For more information, visit www. frederickartscouncil.org or call 301-662-4190.

BURKITTSVILLE Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Burkittsville is a well preserved, virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Churches, houses, and trade establishments along Main Street were bordered at the rear by fields surrounding the town. The mountains rose to the west. To this day, the town retains those early visual characteristics. Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam. The town’s inhabitants fled for safety to nearby villages. Today, many of Burkittsville’s residents commute to jobs in the nearby metropolitan areas, but the town maintains a strong sense of community through its many services, social activities, special events, and town meetings.

A young Lieutenant George Washington, while surveying the South Mountain area, reported that the valley to the east was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Middletown continues to evolve from a settlement of farmers and ranchers to one of tradesmen, craftsmen, businessmen, clergymen, commuters, and retired folk—without losing its agricultural roots. From the stately old Victorian-style homes and soaring church steeples to the rustic dairy farms and modern housing developments, residents find in Middletown a refuge where they can enjoy small-town life as it used to be.

Myersville

Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Myersville is strategically located halfway between Frederick and Hagerstown, with convenient access from Interstate 70 to the south and US Route 40 to the north, yet nicely buffered from both by a mile of local road. The outstanding location and beautiful, hilly terrain combined to make the town an attractive location for residential development during the last decades of the 20th century. Today, Myersville takes care to ensure by ordinance and zoning control that its attractive location is matched by attractive development. The Canada Hill development and three other developments built in the 1990s—Ashley Hills, Meadowridge, and Terraces of South Mountain— exemplify the same standards of appearance set by the town. Walkersville Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Walkersville is a combination of two villages that were settled by German immigrants in the mid 1700s and early 1800s. By the late 1800s, the villages of Georgetown and Walkersville had grown so intertwined that it made sense to combine them into one entity, which was named Walkersville. Today, Walkersville aggressively pursues fiscal responsibility, recycling projects, and innovation. In 1995, it was credited with having the first State Police bicycle patrol in the nation. There are four schools, residential developments, a shopping center, several businesses and institutions, and numerous restaurants in the town. Walkersville has managed a rapid population growth wisely, enabling it to maintain a friendly, small-town atmosphere. Burgess

Woodsboro Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. After the Civil War, the town developed some notoriety as a train stop that offered exceptional accommodations and relaxing pursuits. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town. There are small commercial activities and service providers within the town itself. Burgess
