Primary Documents 2 Corinthians 3:1-6 Rev. Charlie Wilfong

When you want to get the heart of a matter, you look at the primary documentsdon't you? Reading a soldier's diary from an important battle can be more revealing than reading someone's speculation about what it was like. Consulting the legislation itself is more helpful than trusting someone's opinion of it. An expert in a field of study may be a living primary source. Since the name "Christian" means "little Christ," it stands to reason that those who are Christians-- who are followers of Jesus-- would be such a living primary source for the faith. Are those who are observing your life as a source for understanding Christianity seeing the heart of the matter?

The Wesley Covenant Prayer I give myself completely to You, God. Assign me to my place in Your creation. Let me suffer for You. Give me the work You would have me do. Give me many tasks or have me step aside while You call others. Put me forward or humble me. Give me riches or let me live in poverty. I freely give all that I am and all that I have to You. And now, Holy God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, You are mine and I am Yours. So be it. May this covenant made on earth continue for ever. Classic Worship Notes Worship on this first Sunday of the new year begins with a pipe organ prelude on the familiar tune “Greensleeves” as arranged by noted English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. The tune to which we sing this 16th century text is modal in its compositional structure, providing a particularly unique musical mood. With allusions in works ranging from Shakespeare to the television show Lassie, the history of both the text and the tune provide the opportunity for your further reading and consideration during this first week of the new year. Among the most influential composers from the Protestant worship tradition was German composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). His setting of the familiar tune “In Dulci Jubilo” (translated: “In sweet rejoicing”) reflects but one setting of the centuries-old hymn tune. Bach served in various musical positions during this lifetime, but perhaps most notably as the leader for music at St. Thomas Church – and three other churches simultaneously – in Leipzig for 27 years until his death. His fingerprints remain on mainline Protestant worship today throughout the world. Not to be missed, today’s postlude is among the pillars of repertory for the pipe organ. French composer Louis Vierne penned this florid, virtuosic organ solo based on the tune heard from the bells in the Palace of Westminster (parliament, and home of the bell called “Big Ben”) in London. Listen carefully for the familiar clock tune, which is slightly misquoted in the composition – either by accident nearly a century ago, or through the composer’s intention. Vierne’s composition was debuted by the composer-organist at Notre Dame in Paris.

Bible Explorers Dig Into Faith in 2017 PUMC values children, their families, and faith experiences that are age-appropriate, meaningful and fun. In PUMC’s children’s ministries you’ll find that careful attention has been given to provide children a safe, comfortable, and engaging learning experience. On Sunday mornings, children may be taken directly to their classroom where parents will meet caring teachers, provide helpful information about the children, and register their children for secure pick-up: Infant/Toddler Care is provided during all Sunday morning worship and classes (8:15 a.m. – Noon). Classroom (# 5) is in the hallway south of the sanctuary and main entrance. 3’s – Pre-K meet Sunday mornings 9:50 - 10:45 a.m. in room # 20/22. Children participate in interactive learning through Bible story-telling, games, snacks and crafts. Bible Explorers, Kindergarten – Grade 5 start their Sunday mornings in room # 107 with a small breakfast, high energy worship, games, and Bible lessons. Guided by an adult leader, the children then move to grade level groups for a deeper dive into the lesson and prayer time. Contact PUMC Children’s Director Amanda Norton at anorton@ pumc.org or 317.839.2319, ext. 229, to learn more.
