We trust many things on a daily basis. Our cars run and take us to our destinations. The electricity powers the lights, appliances, and other devices in our homes and workplaces practically non-stop. But few things are absolutely trustworthy. For international treaties and other important contracts, an important operative phrase is “trust, but verify.” What do you trust the most? Whom do you trust the most? Does “blind faith” really work anywhere? We were even cautious as a nation, failing to officially adopt our national motto, “In God we trust,” until 1956. But, it’s the only way to live.

Classic Worship Notes The idea of a limitless life may feel foreign, unattainable or even inconceivable. In all truth, however, all things are possible through Christ. This morning we begin a 4-week worship series focusing on Limitless Life, and today consider Limitless Faith. The hymn “My Faith Looks Up to Thee” (number 452 in the UMC hymnal) features music by Lowell Mason, among the most influential American church musicians. Born in 1792 in Massachusetts, Mason is rightly credited with bringing music education into the public schools – rather than being something only the wealthy and privileged could experience in their education. As an aside, he wrote the music to which we now sing “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Throughout the four verses of today’s hymn, the text reminds us to continually find strength in our faith, through the Lamb of Calvary. Our opening voluntary and the offertory both feature music arranged for piano and pipe organ duet. The percussive qualities of the piano combined with the wide-ranging musical color palate of the pipe organ provide a wealth of sonic resources for experiencing the Creator’s beauty and inspiration. Our closing hymn was written by another musician born in Massachusetts, Daniel Webster Whitte. Associated with the evangelism of Dwight Moody’s Holiness Movement, Whitte often composed under the pen name “El Nathan.” If you haven’t opened your hymnal to number 714, be sure to find the name of the hymn tune found in the bottom right-hand corner of the page. Unsure of what is meant by the Holiness Movement? Take a moment to read about it this week. (Hint: John Wesley and Methodism played a central role.)

We are so glad to welcome you to worship this morning! If you are new to PUMC, you are invited to stop by the Welcome Center located in the south lobby. Please make yourself at home.
Work Team to Costa Rica in 2018 PUMC is sending a mission work team to Costa Rica in 2018. You can help them get there with a simple purchase that you may already be making... Many people now send gift cards for a variety of celebratory events--birthdays, anniversaries, etc. When you give these kinds of gifts you can also support the Costa Rica work team. It’s simple:
• Purchase a gift card (known for this purpose as
scrip) through PUMC. You (or your gift recipient) receive the full face value of the gift card. But through special arrangement with various providers, the Costa Rica mission team receives a percentage of your purchase, sometimes up to 11% of face value.
• Give your gift card as a gift, or spend it yourself! To purchase, visit the display in the Main Lobby today or contact LeeAnn Overbey at CostaRica2018@pumc.org. To learn more about this gift card program or the 2018 Costa Rica mission trip, please contact trip organizers LeeAnn, Mike Rohrer, or Steve Brizendine, through the church office. Thanks for letting your gift giving provide an extra gift of support for mission in Costa Rica! You can also provide financial support for this mission trip when you shop at Kroger. Learn more in the Main Lobby on Sundays, January 8, 15, and 22.
Th3rd Sunday Lunch January 15, 2017 All are invited to January’s Th3rd Sunday Lunch. Lunch is served after 11:10 a.m. Classic Worship, about 12:15 p.m., in Clayton Hall. If you are able, please bring a dish to share and join others for food, fellowship, and fun! Tea and lemonade will be provided for everyone and dishes and silverware will be used from the PUMC kitchen.
Get Their Name in February at PUMC February brings another engaging all-church worship and study experience to PUMC. The four-week series, Get Their Name, encourages participants to grow in their faith and invite others to experience the same joy they know in Jesus in ways that are natural, genuine, and easy. Be a part of a small group for this series and learn and grow with others. Signups begin today, in the Main Lobby. Groups are scheduled nearly every day of the week in February – there is one that will fit your schedule! A donation of $10 is suggested (but not required) for the participant book. Learn more about resources at the display at PUMC on Sundays in January. You can help make this a formational – and transformational – experience for group participants by leading a small group. To express interest, contact Pastor Ken Loudenback at kloudenback@pumc.org. Orientation for group leaders is on Sundays, January 8 and 15.

Worship to hear from some NFL players about their life with Christ, on and off the field.
And help make this a ‘souper’ Sunday for some hungry people. Bring canned soup to donate to the local food pantry.

Giving to God in 2017 It was on November 13, at PUMC’s second Consecration Sunday, that we each answered the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give to his work through the ministry of PUMC?” If the answer to that question calls for a change in your giving now that we have entered 2017, there are several easy ways for you to do that:
