It’s probably the best-known hymn. “Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me!” John Newton wrote the words in 1779. He had been a slave ship captain converted to Christianity. Later, he became a priest in the Church of England and worked to oppose slavery. His conversion and changes in his life did not come quickly or easily. Grace did more than save Newton. That’s why his hymn also says, “’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.” God’s grace is at work in our lives from beginning to end. It’s not just for conversion. And it’s not only amazing. It’s limitless!

Classic Worship Notes Today’s worship experience is introduced by the choir singing a choral call to worship based on Psalm 84, written by a temple musician. He wanted to meet God and get close to Him by being in the temple. Today we know we can meet God anywhere, at any time, but worshiping with others in a holy place is significant, too. Quietly meditating and praying and spending time with God will allow the experience of God’s faithfulness to be more meaningful. God’s living presence is our greatest joy. His radiant presence helps us grow in strength, grace and glory. The anthem “For God So Loved the World” was written by John Stainer, an English composer and organist who lived from 1840 to 1901. At the age of 7, he could play Bach, and as a teenager, was the youngest ever successful candidate for the Bachelor of Music degree at Oxford. He became the organist and choirmaster at Magdalen College. Prior to his leadership, adult choir members never came to practice, but Mr. Stainer had “a magnetic personality” that persuaded them to come, making them a better choir. Mr. Stainer was interested in the history of music, traditional folk songs, and carols. He composed many hymn tunes, with “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” included in our hymnal. One of the few major works from Stainer that is still regularly performed is the Passion cantata “The Crucifixion,” written in 1887. “For God So Loved the World” is a chorus from that cantata. The text is based on the scripture John 3:16-17. The postlude is written entirely for the pedals of the pipe organ. Calling for no use of the hands, the postlude is based on a familiar hymn “Shall We Gather at the River.”

Get Their Name in February at PUMC February brings another engaging all-church worship and study experience to PUMC. The four-week series, Get Their Name, encourages participants to grow in their faith and invite others to experience the same joy they know in Jesus in ways that are natural, genuine, and easy. Be a part of a small group for this series and learn and grow with others. Signups are this month in the Main Lobby. Groups are scheduled nearly every day of the week in February – there is one that will fit your schedule! A donation of $10 is suggested (but not required) for the participant book. Learn more about resources at the display at PUMC on Sundays in January. You can help make this a formational – and transformational – experience for group participants by leading a small group. To express interest, contact Pastor Ken Loudenback at kloudenback@pumc.org.
Giving to God in 2017 It was on November 13, at PUMC’s second Consecration Sunday, that we each answered the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give to his work through the ministry of PUMC?” If the answer to that question calls for a change in your giving now that we have entered 2017, there are several easy ways for you to do that:
• Set-up (or update your) regular online giving at pumc. org or via SecureGive on your mobile device.
• Phone Brenda Barnett in the church office to
set up ACH (automatic withdrawal from your bank account), 317.839.2319, ext. 227.
• Give in person in worship on Sundays or anytime in the church office.
PUMC on Mission in Costa Rica in 2018 A PUMC mission work team will be at Strong Ministries in Costa Rica in 2018 - and you can help! Be a part of touching lives with the love of Jesus Christ in Costa Rica with purchases you may already make. You may purchase gift cards (called scrip for this program) for well known retailers and restaurants through PUMC and support this mission team in the process. You, or your gift recipient, receive the full face value of the gift card, but the mission receives a percentage of your purchase - sometimes as much as 11%! Visit the display in the main lobby today to learn more or purchase gift cards. For more information about this mission trip or additional ways to support the team, please contact coordinators Mike Rohrer or Steve Brizendine through the church office. An additional special promotion is available with Kroger. Visit the display table to learn more and get registered for this ongoing support opportunity.
