“Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”—Love Story, 1970. Every generation defines love a little differently and in its own style. Does love mean enduring every hardship? Forgiving every wrong? Does love mean constantly demonstrating approval? Human beings seem to need to set boundaries for their own health and protection. So, how does God have “limitless love?” It’s very difficult for us to comprehend a love so expansive and spacious. And not only do we claim that God has this kind of love; but we also claim that limitless love is the essence of who God is.

REV. CHARLIE WILFONG

LIMITLESS LOVE 1 CORINTHIANS 13:1-13

Classic Worship Notes The subject today is love. Our hymn texts speak of God’s love for us, how it manifests itself in us, and how we share it within our earthly community. Charles Wesley’s hymn, “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” reminds us that God’s love for us is greater than any other love we experience. Sing this text as a prayer acknowledging that God dwells with us, sent his Son to die for our sins, purifies us, and welcomes us into his presence forever. In “Lift High the Cross”, arranged by Joel Raney for piano and organ duet, you will hear the familiar tune CRUCIFER shifting between the instruments. Listen for syncopated, choral, flourished accompaniments to the melody. You might also recognize fragments of other familiar hymn tunes scattered throughout the piece. Raney’s setting of CRUCIFER adds more dimension to the original setting written by Sydney Hugo Nicholson in 1916. John Fawcett wrote a hymn text titled “Brotherly Love” in 1782. We know the text today as “Blest Be the Tie That Binds.” Fawcett touches on themes of community, shared worship, shared burdens, and the knowledge that we will one day meet again. This hymn is another to be sung in a prayerful manner. Finally, the organ anthem, “The Gift of Love,” was composed by Rebecca te Velde, mother of former PUMC organ scholar, Brent te Velde.

Get Their Name in February at PUMC February brings another engaging all-church worship and study experience to PUMC. The four-week series, Get Their Name, encourages participants to grow in their faith and invite others to experience the same joy they know in Jesus in ways that are natural, genuine, and easy. Be a part of a small group for this series and learn and grow with others. Signups are this month in the Main Lobby. Groups are scheduled nearly every day of the week in February – there is one that will fit your schedule! A donation of $10 is suggested (but not required) for the participant book. Learn more about resources at the display at PUMC on Sundays in January. You can help make this a formational – and transformational – experience for group participants by leading a small group. To express interest, contact Pastor Ken Loudenback at kloudenback@pumc.org.

Giving to God in 2017 It was on November 13, at PUMC’s second Consecration Sunday, that we each answered the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give to his work through the ministry of PUMC?” If the answer to that question calls for a change in your giving now that we have entered 2017, there are several easy ways for you to do that:

• Set-up (or update your) regular online giving at pumc. org or via SecureGive on your mobile device.

• Phone Brenda Barnett in the church office to

set up ACH (automatic withdrawal from your bank account), 317.839.2319, ext. 227.

• Give in person in worship on Sundays or anytime in the church office.

Game Day in NewDay, February 5 Sunday, February 5, is game day across America. Invite a friend to NewDay Praise Worship at 9:50 a.m. to hear from some NFL players about their life with Christ, on and off the field. And help make this a ‘souper’ Sunday for some hungry people. Bring canned soup to donate to the local food pantry.
