February 5, 2017 NewDay Praise Worship - 9:50 a.m.

Football Sunday

Rev. Elizabeth Gilbert 1 John 5:1-5 Sunday, February 5, 2017, is the big game in the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, and in living rooms across the country. It’s “Football Sunday!” We might be tempted to think that football is the only thing on the minds and hearts of these championship players; that they are driven solely by the hope of football success and celebrity. But many players have a different story to tell - a much more important story. In NewDay Praise on Football Sunday get an inspiring inside look at faith in the NFL. On football’s biggest day Benjamin Watson, Anquan Boldin, and Brandon Marshall will share how Christ has helped them be overcomers, and players from both championship teams will share stories of their faith journeys. Be encouraged in faith and life as you hear how God has been active and working in the lives of some of the sport’s most well-known players.

Faith in the Incarnate Son of God Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. 1 John 5:1-5 (NIV)

Get Their Name in February at PUMC February brings another engaging all-church worship and study experience to PUMC. The four-week series, Get Their Name, encourages participants to grow in their faith and invite others to experience the same joy they know in Jesus in ways that are natural, genuine, and easy. Be a part of a small group for this series and learn and grow with others. Signups conclude today in the Main Lobby. Groups are scheduled nearly every day of the week in February – there is one that will fit your schedule! A donation of $10 is suggested (but not required) for the participant book. You can help make this a formational – and transformational – experience for group participants by leading a small group. To express interest, contact Pastor Ken Loudenback at kloudenback@pumc.org.

Game Day Bake Sale Grab some yummy, homemade snacks and baked goods for your game day party while at church today. United Methodist Women are offering snacks and goodies for sale, the proceeds of which will support women, youth and children locally and globally.

Game Day in NewDay, February 5 Sunday, February 5, is game day across America. Invite a friend to NewDay Praise Worship at 9:50 a.m. to hear from some NFL players about their life with Christ, on and off the field. And help make this a ‘souper’ Sunday for some hungry people. Bring canned soup to donate to the local food pantry.

Intercept the Traffickers Every year United Methodist Women (UMW), including PUMC women’s groups, joins with interfaith allies to raise awareness of human trafficking. Sporting events and other large gatherings often lead to women, youth and children being trafficked. As many as 30 million people have been victims here in Plainfield and around the world. Help UMW advocate for these exploited persons. End this form of modern-day slavery. Learn more at www.unitedmethodistwomen. org/human-trafficking.

Sunday Morning Small Group Takes the Flag in March Starting Sunday, March 5, the 11:10 adult small group will be studying Take the Flag. This is a series based on seven flags used in auto racing. Together we’ll read the book, watch the DVD segments and discuss ways God signals us in our race of faith. You don’t have to be a fan or know anything about auto racing. The flags are used as metaphors for how God can and does speak with us in everyday life. This series was written by Pastor Rob Fuquay, senior pastor of St. Luke’s UMC in Indianapolis. Join the group to examine ways God has communicated with ordinary people, like each of us, and to consider how God may be talking with us through everyday life. The book is available online in both print and Kindle versions. The 11:10 small group meets in the Koinonia Room. Contact Mike Rohrer through the church office for more information.
