Today we begin our worship series and church-wide study, “Get Their Name: Grow Your Church by Building New Relationships”. It’s not as much about making the congregation larger as it is about increasing our capacity for witnessing to our relationship with Christ. We find it easy to talk about our favorite sports team or vacation spot. But we struggle to discuss the most important relationship in our lives. We are either anxious about witnessing in an ineffective way or we help others with no clear word about Christ. Evangelism is not difficult or demanding. Evangelism is simply building new, authentic friendships in Jesus’ name. And God gives us everything we need!

Classic Worship Notes Today marks the first Sunday in our month-long worship series titled “Get Their Name” and the text of hymn 569 particularly reminds us of a remarkable tool in our Christian quiver: Our own faith story. With text and music both written by Henry Ernest Nichol (who often wrote under the pen name Colin Sterne), the hymn “We’ve a Story to Tell to the Nations” is based on text from Matthew 28:19. Make note that each of the four verses begins using a different metaphor for our faith journey: “We’ve a story…a song…a message…,” and ultimately “a savior.” The addition of violin adds to our worship this morning – reminding us of the beauty of the Psalms, especially Psalm 150 and its reference to praising the Creator in myriad ways, including with stringed instruments. Originating more than five centuries ago, the violin has four strings tuned at different pitches, each one a perfect fifth apart. Unlike the guitar for example, the violin does not have frets and is so versatile that it is equally at home in repertoire ranging from classical, to bluegrass, jazz and country music. Consider closing your eyes during communion, savoring the linear nature of music emanating from the violin. What images come to mind? What memories return to us from yesteryear? What illumination for the future do you encounter? We are reminded today of the role that each of us plays in spreading the gospel message. Whether through song, message, stories or any other form of communication, we are the living witness of Jesus’ ministry on this terrestrial orb.

Get Their Name in February at PUMC February brings another engaging all-church worship and study experience to PUMC. The four-week series, Get Their Name, encourages participants to grow in their faith and invite others to experience the same joy they know in Jesus in ways that are natural, genuine, and easy. Be a part of a small group for this series and learn and grow with others. Signups conclude today in the Main Lobby. Groups are scheduled nearly every day of the week in February – there is one that will fit your schedule! A donation of $10 is suggested (but not required) for the participant book. You can help make this a formational – and transformational – experience for group participants by leading a small group. To express interest, contact Pastor Ken Loudenback at kloudenback@pumc.org.
