GO We live in a culture that values activity. We proudly declare, “I’m busy!” We even have fun phrases to celebrate it. “I have a lot on my plate.” “My dance card is full.” Our calendars look like colorful patchwork quilts with no blank or white spaces. But as Valentine’s Day approaches, we will make time for those we care about. We always do. God not only calls us to regard our neighbors with love; but God also calls us to care enough to carve out some time in our full schedules to establish friendships with new people. How will you schedule loving your neighbors into your calendar? Don’t schedule yourself so tightly that you miss some important “God appointments.”

Classic Worship Notes Two bell choirs offer anthems this morning at 8:30 and 9:50 worship. Joy Bells delivers a rendition of “Faith of our Fathers,” a mid-19th-century hymn with text written in 1849 by Frederick William Faber and music composed by Henri F. Hemy in 1864. The last eight measures of music, containing the refrain, were added by James G. Walton. Praise Bells share with us a setting of “Awesome God” for the offertory. Men’s and women’s ensembles sing anthems during 11:10 worship. The opening anthem features the men singing, “O Worship the King,” with the melody in the middle voice. Listen to how the tenors float above the melody while the basses provide the foundation below. For the offertory, the women sing a traditional Negro spiritual, “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel?” The spiritual contains this refrain: “Didn’t my Lord deliver Daniel, deliver Daniel, deliver Daniel, Didn’t my Lord deliver Daniel, An’ why not-a every man.” The spiritual refers to the story of God and his faithful servant, Daniel, who was thrown into the lion’s den for continuing to petition God three times a day despite a new ordinance that prohibited this activity for thirty days. He and Ananias, another disciple of God and the subject of today’s sermon, both faced potential persecution for worshiping and serving God alone. May their courageous and obedient witness inspire us to faithful action, and may we heartily praise our awesome God.
