“Famous last words” is an ironic comment on overconfidence that will be proven wrong. “I'll be A-OK on my own.” “Famous last words,” she thought to herself. Literal last words are very important. The last message someone utters in this life can reveal their character, their heart, their deepest intentions and desires when spoken with preparation. During Lent, we will be exploring the most important last words of all—those of Jesus as he was dying on the cross. His words reveal not only his character, heart, and intentions, but also those of God the Father. We listen at the cross so that we can know the heart of God.

Classic Worship Notes On this first day of Lent, we enjoy several gems from the choral literature. The Chancel Choir first presents the rousing classic “With a Voice of Singing,” by Martin Shaw, which he composed for the 1923 Annual Festival of the Rochester Diocesan Church Choirs Association. The Chancel Septet sings two lovely pieces: “Ubi Caritas” by Frenchman Maurice Duruflé and the spiritual, “Daniel, Daniel, Servant of the Lord.” Duruflé (1902-1986) is one of those composers who we wish had composed far more music than he did. His perfectionist tendencies limited his output, but those pieces that he did write are beautifully crafted and polished. Today’s anthem comes from his Motets on Gregorian Themes, Op. 10. By “Gregorian,” Duruflé refers to Gregorian chant, which means that “Ubi Caritas” (text listed below) is a centuries-old hymn written for Holy Thursday to celebrate the Last Supper. Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor. Exultemus, et in ipso iucundemur. Timeamus, et amemus Deum vivum. Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. Amen. Where charity and love are, God is there. Christ’s love has gathered us into one. Let us rejoice and be pleased in Him. Let us fear, and let us love the living God. And may we love each other with a sincere heart. Amen. “Daniel, Daniel, Servant of the Lord,” tells the story of Daniel and the lion’s den, of Daniel’s faithfulness and God’s deliverance. (Remember last month’s spiritual, “Didn’t my Lord Deliver Daniel?”) We celebrate God’s spiritual deliverance by participating in Communion.

Chili Supper to Benefit PUMC Outreach PUMC United Methodist Women (UMW) invite you to a Chili Supper, March 17, 5-7 p.m. in Clayton Hall. Tickets are: $8 for adults $4 for ages 5-9 Free for ages 4 and under All proceeds benefit PUMC’s Last Saturday Lunch, a community-wide meal served at PUMC that feeds bodies and spirits the last Saturday of every month. Tickets are available at the door or prior to the event on Sundays February 26, and March 5 and 12 in the north & south lobbies at PUMC. Menu includes chili, chili mac, hotdogs, veggies, crackers and cornbread, desserts with ice cream, and beverage. Carry-out is available.

For the first time (ever!), PUMC will offer a community concert and worship experience called “Choral Evensong” on Sunday, March 19 at 6:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. All are invited, and you may especially wish to invite a friend from the community – from outside of the PUMC family – to join as your guest. But what is Choral Evensong? What should I expect? First, arrive 10 minutes early to find your seat in the sanctuary and enjoy an especially gorgeous pipe organ prelude. Then you will experience a mix of choral music, congregational hymn singing, scripture, and prayers for the community – all in a setting of reverence, reflection and with an emphasis on beauty. Candlelight. Music enveloping your mind and soul. As part of the PUMC Concert Series which was launched last fall, Choral Evensong is offered to the PUMC congregation and to the entire community as we seek to build bridges with all persons through music. There are no tickets, and the event is free. Include this special musical experience in the middle of your Lenten season.
