Did you ever learn about a friend’s party only to discover that your invitation wasn’t lost in the mail, but was never sent in the first place? How could they forget you!? We’ve all been forgotten or excluded from something we wanted to be a part of. It’s isolating. It hurts. And it’s impossible not to take it personally. Few things are more uplifting and encouraging than being remembered, included, and appreciated. Even while he was dying, Jesus spoke comforting words to include a convicted thief in the promise of God’s paradise. Rather than a universal, generalized promise, Jesus made it personal. And you’re included.

Classic Worship Notes The season of Lent is a period of preparation and of reflection. Beginning on Ash Wednesday and concluding on Good Friday with Jesus’ death on the cross, this season often employs worship rituals including removing the sung “Alleluia” from worship, more reflective music, and the color purple in sanctuary decorations. Today is the second Sunday of Lent. The word “adagio” is Italian and means “slowly.” On this Lenten Sunday, the Prelude features a piece titled Adagio by 17th century French composer Georg Muffat, and a well-recognized Adagio by 20th century American composer Samuel Barber. Muffat is especially recognized for his thorough and detailed directions for performing music which were printed along side his compositions. Likely Barber’s most famous composition, he composed “Adagio for Strings” in 1936 while traveling in Europe with his partner (and noted opera composer) Gian Carlo Menotti. As an aside, Barber attended the Curtis Institute of Music – one of America’s finest music schools – with fellow classmates including Menotti and Leonard Bernstein. With its debut conducted by Toscanini in a radio broadcast in 1938, the piece was toured across Europe and South America. The composer himself set the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God who takest away the sins of the world…) text to the much-adored music in 1967 for chorus. This church’s pipe organ is particularly suited to playing this work – among many other compositions residing squarely within our instrument’s musical sweet spot. Our pipe organ has multiple sets of string sounds from which the organist can build from a “still quiet voice” to a grand crescendo, and back to the reflective nature of Lenten worship.

For the first time (ever!), PUMC will offer a community concert and worship experience called “Choral Evensong” on Sunday, March 19 at 6:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. All are invited, and you may especially wish to invite a friend from the community – from outside of the PUMC family – to join as your guest. But what is Choral Evensong? What should you expect? First, arrive 10 minutes early to find your seat in the sanctuary and enjoy an especially gorgeous pipe organ prelude. Then you will experience a mix of choral music, congregational hymn singing, scripture, and prayers for the community – all in a setting of reverence, reflection and with an emphasis on beauty. Candlelight. Music enveloping your mind and soul. As part of the PUMC Concert Series which was launched last fall, Choral Evensong is offered to the PUMC congregation and to the entire community as we seek to build bridges with all persons through music. There are no tickets, and the event is free. Include this special musical experience in the middle of your Lenten season.
Th3rd Sunday Lunch Everyone is invited to the Th3rd Sunday Lunch next Sunday, March 19. Lunch is served after 11:10 Classic Worship (about 12:15 p.m.) in Clayton Hall. If you are able, please bring a dish to share and join others for food, fellowship, and fun! Tea and lemonade will be provided for everyone and dishes and silverware will be used from the PUMC kitchen.
Currently in Sub-Saharan Africa a child dies every 2 minutes from malaria, but malaria is 100% preventable. Keeping mosquitoes away is the action needed. And a net can be provided for only ten dollars.
Family Promise March 19, 2017 PUMC will be hosting Family Promise the week of March 19. See the table in the main lobby today to sign up or ask questions on how you can help encourage and support families battling homelessness here in Hendricks County.
