March 26, 2017 NewDay Praise Worship - 9:50 a.m.

The Lord’s Prayer

Rev. Elizabeth Gilbert Matthew 6:5-15 We learn early how to get what we want. The first words toddlers learn are “please” and “thank you,” the ‘magic words’ to get what they are asking for. As we grow we learn how to behave with others so that we’ll be accepted by the ‘in crowd.’ We learn how to do a job to earn a paycheck so that we can buy what we want. And in a world of one-click buying on Amazon and more than 1,200 petabytes of data available on the Internet, why shouldn’t we have everything we want and have it right now? It’s no wonder then, that when life is not going well and we pray to God to fix, provide, or change things, we’re disappointed when things don’t immediately improve. After all, isn’t that what prayer is all about - doing it right so that God will give me what I want? Jesus prayed often and had a lot to say about prayer. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus gave both instruction about prayer and an actual prayer for his followers to use. It’s neither complicated nor difficult, but it has little to do with our wish lists. In the Upside Down Kingdom of God, prayer has less to do with us getting what we want, and almost everything to do with God making us into what he wants. In the Upside Down kingdom of God it’s not about praying right, it’s about becoming right - with God and others.

Concerning Prayer “And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. “Pray then in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:5-15 (NRSV) “Pray then in this way...” (Jesus of Nazareth) 1. Address God’s rightful place as the One Creator God, holy and sovereign over all 2. Worship and praise God for who he is and all that he has done 3. Acknowledge that it is God’s will, not yours, that you seek to follow and align your life with 4. Ask God for the things that you need 5. Confess your sins and receive God’s forgiveness 6. Request protection and help in overcoming sin and un-Christlike behavior

e are so glad to welcome you to worship this morning!

If you are new to PUMC, you are invited to stop by the Welcome Center located in the south lobby. A PUMC member is there to answer your questions, and we have a gift for you, too! In Clayton Hall (north end of building) you’ll find refreshments and a place to chat and meet people. Please make yourself at home.

Today you can be a life saver! Contribute ten or more dollars at the Imagine No Malaria display in the Main Lobby this morning. One bed net (ten dollars each) can save the lives of five or six persons in one family sleeping under it each night. Malaria is a completely preventable disease, if the mosquitoes that carry it are prevented from biting. Thank you for purchasing a net today and for being a life saver!

Worship Annex Work Day April 2 Easter is coming and that means getting PUMC ready for company! Will you help make the Worship Annex and Hospitality Area ready for guests? A Worship Annex Workday has been scheduled for April 2, 1-3 p.m. Tasks this day will include mostly light duty cleaning and maintenance items. The largest project will be replacing ceiling tiles. Snacks, coffee, and childcare for infants and toddlers will be provided. Older children are invited to work alongside parents (though it will be adults only on the ladders). Will you please be present to help with the work and be a part of preparing for the Easter celebration? Just indicate your willingness on today’s Connection Card - or just show up! We’ll have fun and get the job done, too. Thank you!

UMCOR Sunday March 26. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) meets the needs of persons around the world following physical devastation of all kinds, such as hurricanes and earthquakes. UMCOR is known as a leader among world aid organizations. It is funded by the donations of generous United Methodists near and far. When a financial gift is given to UMCOR, 100% of that gift goes to directly aid people in need. Today on UMCOR Sunday, United Methodist Churches receive a special offering to underwrite the administrative costs of UMCOR so that the entirety of all gifts to any disaster or crisis help people in need. Today you will find a special envelope in your Worship Folder to receive gifts to UMCOR Sunday. Of course, you can always give safely and easily online at pumc.org or via the PUMC App. Designate your gift for “Other: UMCOR Sunday. Thank you for your generosity.
