One of the earliest fears small children experience is that of being separated from loved ones. One of the most lasting and emotionally damaging experiences in life is separation from loved ones. It can occur as abandonment, rejection, loss through death, or other ways. This clearly illustrates how intensely relational we are as human beings. We also know an intensely relational God, who exists in a relation of three—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. If this is all true, why does one of Jesus’ final cries as he was dying on the cross seem to be an expression of abandonment? And what does that mean to me?

Franz Schubert composed Allegretto in 1827, a year before his death and Andante in 1812, at age 17. You will hear the main theme in each piece repeated in a variety of ways. Allegretto has a chordal middle section juxtaposed between rather transparent first and third sections. The more contemplative Andante demonstrates a thicker texture. Listen for snippets of the melody scattered among treble and bass voices. When considering the words of Jesus in today’s text from Matthew 27, we can understand that Jesus felt forsaken as he was dying on the cross. How often do we feel forsaken by God as we travel through the hardships and temptations of life? Anthems by the Mixed Quartet speak to this as do today’s hymns. In traveling through life we come to realize that our walk with the Lord is the sweetest, richest part of our life. As we keep our eyes on Jesus and glory in His name, we come to know Him more deeply as our friend, comforter, listener, redeemer, and the love of our life. The authorship of “How Firm a Foundation” is not clear, but the message of the text is: Assurance of God’s steadfastness and love. Methodist Episcopal pastor George Bennard wrote in 1913, of the cross and the promise that we will be able to one day “exchange it for a crown”. This is an old hymn. Reflect on it’s meaning for you 100 years after being written.

Worship Annex Work Day April 2 Easter is coming and that means getting PUMC ready for company! Will you help make the Worship Annex and Hospitality Area ready for guests? A Worship Annex Workday has been scheduled for April 2, 1-3 p.m. Tasks this day will include mostly light duty cleaning and maintenance items. The largest project will be replacing ceiling tiles. Snacks, coffee, and childcare for infants and toddlers will be provided. Older children are invited to work alongside parents (though it will be adults only on the ladders). Will you please be present to help with the work and be a part of preparing for the Easter celebration? Just indicate your willingness on today’s Connection Card - or just show up! We’ll have fun and get the job done, too. Thank you!

Today you can be a life saver! Contribute ten or more dollars at the Imagine No Malaria display in the Main Lobby this morning. One bed net (ten dollars each) can save the lives of five or six persons in one family sleeping under

it each night. Malaria is a completely preventable disease, if the mosquitoes that carry it are prevented from biting. Thank you for purchasing a net today and for being a life saver!

UMCOR Sunday March 26. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) meets the needs of persons around the world following physical devastation of all kinds, such as hurricanes and earthquakes. UMCOR is known as a leader among world aid organizations. It is funded by the donations of generous United Methodists near and far. When a financial gift is given to UMCOR, 100% of that gift goes to directly aid people in need. Today on UMCOR Sunday, United Methodist Churches receive a special offering to underwrite the administrative costs of UMCOR so that the entirety of all gifts to any disaster or crisis help people in need. Today you will find a special envelope in your Worship Folder to receive gifts to UMCOR Sunday. Of course, you can always give safely and easily online at pumc.org or via the PUMC App. Designate your gift for “Other: UMCOR Sunday. Thank you for your generosity.
