On Judging Others Rev. Elizabeth Gilbert Matthew 7:1-5
You hear it on the school playground, in the teens’ locker room, at the coffee shop, around the water cooler at work... the seemingly harmless remarks that are intended to, ever so subtlety, raise ourselves us and put others down. “My mom and dad are taking me to Disney World for spring break. Where are you going?” “After school today my dad’s taking me to pick up the car he bought me. Are you still driving your mom’s van?” “Did you see how that woman was dressed? Seems a little over the top for someone her age.” “What was he thinking? I would never be so crass as to say such a thing out loud even if I thought it. No wonder he got passed over for that assignment.” And the snipes, the criticisms, the judgments only escalate from here. With little effort, we can make ourselves out to be better than nearly anyone else around us. We always have a way to ‘one-up’ others, as we seek to come out on top. In the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), Jesus teaches his followers about life with him in the kingdom of God. And most everything about life with Jesus stands over and against the ways of the world. In the Upside Down kingdom of God the poor are blessed, people live for others, the rule is love, and prayer is about relationship not results. And Jesus also has a short list of “do nots” in his sermon. One of them: Do not judge. It seems a simple and clear enough command, until we try to live it out. In the upside down kingdom of God, living in love with others means not condemning, criticizing, or belittling others. In the Upside Down kingdom of God our measure is Jesus, not others.
Judging Others “Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbor, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s eye. Matthew 7:1-5
We are so glad to welcome you to worship this morning! If you are new to PUMC, you are invited to stop by the Welcome Center located in the south lobby. A PUMC member is there to answer your questions, and we have a gift for you, too! In Clayton Hall (north end of building) you’ll find refreshments and a place to chat and meet people. Please make yourself at home.
Easter Photo Fun Visit the Easter Photo Booth in the coffee area in Clayton Hall on Easter Sunday for some added Easter fun. Find a spring backdrop for a photo of the kids in their Easter outfits - and fun props for a silly family or group photo. A volunteer will be there to snap photos with your own phone or camera. Celebrate the joy of Easter with a little photo fun!
WORK DAY
WORSHIP ANNEX APRIL 2 1-3 p.m.
Worship Annex Work Day Today Easter is coming and that means getting PUMC ready for company! Will you help make the Worship Annex and Hospitality Area ready for guests? A Worship Annex Workday is scheduled for today, April 2, 1-3 p.m. Tasks include mostly light duty cleaning and maintenance items. The largest project will be replacing ceiling tiles. Snacks, coffee, and childcare for infants and toddlers will be provided. Older children are invited to work alongside parents (though it will be adults only on the ladders). Will you please be present to help with the work and be a part of preparing for the Easter celebration? Join the group in the Worship Annex at 1:00 p.m. today. We’ll have fun and get the job done, too. Thank you!
Kairos Prison Ministry Kairos Prison Ministry shares the love of Christ with incarcerated persons through care, prayer, meals and fellowship in the prison setting. Men and women from PUMC will be going into area prisons in the coming weeks with Kairos. Your support and encouragement can strengthen their work and witness. Please visit the display in the main lobby today and on upcoming Sundays to learn how you can help with prayers, donations, and cookies! Thank you.
Missions Projects Sunday, April 23 On Sunday, April 23, PUMC will celebrate its work in God’s world through local, hands-on missions projects. The theme of worshp that morning, “Do Good,” will carry over into the lobbies, the hospitality area, and the hallways where you can visit booths and talk to mission leaders to learn about PUMC missions projects. Mark your calendar now, plan to be present, and bring a friend - this is a great opportunity to introduce them to the good work PUMC does in the name of Jesus.
