If you have ever been really, really thirsty you might have some empathy with Jesus’ words for today. At first glance, these last words of Christ seem to be a fulfillment of ancient prophecy. Yet, as we look at the entire ministry of Christ there might be deeper meaning for us to explore. In the Hebrew Scriptures and in the gospels are many examples of thirsting for justice and righteousness, desire for love and purpose and deeper meaning. Today’s lesson and the story of the woman at the well suggest we should “drink” the living water of Jesus.

Today is the penultimate Sunday during the season of Lent – next Sunday is known as both “Palm Sunday” and “Passion Sunday” and marks the beginning of Holy Week. On this Lenten Sabbath, our two congregational hymns could not be more dissimilar. Opening Hymn “What Wondrous Love Is This” has a decidedly simple feel to it, which stems from its home in the Sacred Harp tradition from the mid-19th century. That tradition includes musical notes of different shapes originating in the American South, closely associated with “revivals” of that period. Historically, much of this music would be performed a cappella, meaning without accompaniment. The Hymn for Parting actually is more accurately titled “Praise for the Fountain Opened” and includes text by poet William Cowper who penned the prose after a mental breakdown. While recovering, Cowper (pronounced “Cooper”) lived with John Newton, the English clergyman who we recognize as poet for both “Amazing Grace” and “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken.” This duo went on to publish hymns together across a meaningful friendship. After you receive elements during communion, consider bowing your head in the pew and allowing the music to wash over you. Perhaps you elected to give up something during Lent, or maybe you chose to add something to your daily routine. With the remaining two weeks of this period of prayer, penance and atonement, pause to reflect how the Creator might me speaking to you in that still quiet voice.
