Everyone should fulfill their purpose in life. At Jesus’ death on the cross, one of the last things he said was “It is finished.” Some Bibles render this as, “It’s done” or “It is completed.” Was he simply announcing that his life was over? We know that there are few more slow and painful ways to die than this cruel Roman execution. Was Jesus simply giving voice to a depressed resignation to defeat? Or, did Jesus mean something else with this word? Had Jesus completed and fulfilled his work on earth in some way? What was Jesus’ mission? If this scene is not just the end, what does this “last word” from Jesus mean for me?

Classic Worship Notes We greet this Palm and Passion Sunday with “Processional” for organ written in 1964 by Welsh composer William Mathias (1934-1992). (Mathias notably wrote the anthem, “Let the People Praise Thee, O God” for Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s 1981 wedding.) “Processional” contains two features: the joyful fanfare in the trumpets including the antiphonal fanfare trumpet - paired with a joyful, dance-like melody. Anthems and hymns celebrating Palm Sunday precede the sermon while those observing Passion Sunday follow it. Folded into the service are readings from Luke 19:28-40 and John 19:2837, which tell of Jesus’ triumphal procession into Jerusalem and the end of His Passion on the cross. To conclude the series on Jesus’s Seven Last Words, Pastor Wilfong focuses on the three words that Jesus uttered just before he died: “It is finished.” By these words, Jesus signifies that he completed his earthly mission. Through His work, Christ enables us to fulfill our God-given mission: to worship God and to enjoy Him forever. We accomplish this objective through personal and corporate worship. The opening hymn, “Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart,” (#160) features the hand bells during the 9:50 and 11:10 a.m. services. The choral anthem, “The Palms,” by JeanBaptiste Faure, was arranged by Dudley Buck (1839-1909), considered to be one of the first advocates of organ music in America. Passion hymns, “Were You There” (#288) and “Go to Dark Gethsemane” (#290) lead us to the end of the service, which concludes with Brahms’s Chorale Prelude on the Lutheran choral, “Herzlich tut mich verlangen,” a tune that we know as, “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded.”
