It’s nice when someone remembers our name. When others take a positive, personal interest in us, it warms our hearts. We often think God is too busy to take an interest in us. God cares for “the world” and loves “everybody”, but I must be a low priority for the Creator of the Universe. Instead, the Bible gives Jesus the additional name of “God-with-us”. Many of the Bible’s stories of Jesus are encounters of personal care for individuals. Some of Jesus’ dying words are intensely personal rather than broadly general. And when Jesus returns alive from the dead, he continues to live for individuals—for me and for you.

Classic Worship Notes Easter – Resurrection Sunday – is among the most joyous of the Christian liturgical year because it celebrates the glory of God, the forgiveness of our sins, and provides assurance of eternal life through Jesus’ resurrection. This morning’s music helps us celebrate this glorious day! The hymn “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today” was written in 1739 by Charles Wesley, the brother of the founder of Methodism, John Wesley. A striking feature of this hymn is that its text exists in the present tense. “Christ the Lord IS risen today” – not “has risen” or “rose.” This is powerful because it places us in community with those who witnessed the resurrection, and reaffirms our own hope of being set free from death. George Frideric Handel’s most recognized work, the “Hallelujah Chorus,” was written in 1741 as a part of the oratorio Messiah, about the foretelling, birth, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. The German composer spent less than one month composing Messiah and when finished, he said “I did think I did see all Heaven before me, and the great God Himself.” Tradition has become that audiences stand during the performance of the “Hallelujah Chorus.” The legend has it that King George II of Great Britain was so moved by the music that he stood up, and as royal protocol dictated, everyone else had to stand with the King The postlude is the “crème de la crème” of virtuosic organ solos. It was written in 1879 by Charles Marie Widor, the organist for 67 years at the stately St. Sulpice Cathedral in Paris. With the recent completion of PUMC’s new pipe organ, this final movement from Widor’s Fifth Organ Symphony is among hist bestknown compositions, and features perpetual motion in the hands and complicated melodic material in the pedals. All are invited forward to get a closer look at the organist’s hands and feet during the postlude. To God be the glory!
