Do Good
Rev. Elizabeth Gilbert Acts 10:34-38 John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, is credited with saying: “Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can.” It’s an apt description of the ministry of Jesus, too. In the book of Acts, the author summarized Jesus’ earthly ministry by saying that he “went about doing good” (10:38). Jesus did good by teaching, healing, feeding, and comforting people. Using Jesus as the example, his followers are called to meet the needs of others, too. PUMC has a long history of service to people near and far through practical, hands-on missions projects. Every week PUMC is on the streets of Indianapolis providing food for our homeless friends and neighbors. Work teams take the love of Jesus to neighborhoods in the Plainfield area, around the nation, and even internationally, on a regular basis by being present to serve, build, clean, feed, and care for others. Through knitting, sewing, building, painting, and cleaning PUMC missioners serve countless people with God’s grace and compassion. In NewDay Praise Worship this weekend we celebrate God’s goodness and provision as we recognize the hands-on missions projects of PUMC and those who serve. From the example of Jesus, Who went about doing good, We are to honor our Savior By helping wherever he would. —Hess
Then Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. Missions Projects Today! Today, PUMC celebrates its work in God’s world through local, handson missions projects. The theme of worship this morning, “Do Good,” spills over into the lobbies, the hospitality area, and the hallways where you can visit booths and talk to mission leaders to learn about PUMC missions projects.
Membership Discovery Class April 30 PUMC offers a Membership Discovery Class for persons seeking to learn more about membership at PUMC. The spring 2017 class is April 30.
Save the Date: May Pipe Organ Celebration Concert Mark your calendar for one of the biggest events in the life of PUMC’s new pipe organ: The Celebration Concert on Sunday, May 7, 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. PUMC welcomes organist Ken Cowan to the bench to play a 90-minute recital that includes some of the most flashy, tasty and gorgeous music for the “King of Instruments” in a free concert. Invite your friends and family to this celebration of God’s goodness and PUMC’s new pipe organ.
The class provides an overview of the ministry and mission of PUMC and helps participants find meaningful places to connect with this congregation. Classes focus on getting to know the church and its programs, ministries, and missions; developing relationships with others in the group and church; and meeting church staff. Participants are invited to consider membership at the conclusion of the class. The class will meet on Sunday, April 30, 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the Worship Annex in Clayton Hall. The group will enjoy a light lunch during the session. Childcare will be provided. One Way Love: Inexhaustible Grace for an Exhausted World
It’s time for Kinderbells! Traditionally at PUMC, Mother’s Day is the time for young children to ring bells for worship. If your child is 3-7 years old, they are eligible to participate. Rehearsals will be in the sanctuary at 6:30 p.m. on May 3 and May 11. Then, on Mother’s Day, May 14, 2017, the children will gather in the bell room at 9:20 a.m. to rehearse, and be guided at the proper time to ring in both Classic & NewDay Praise Worship during the 9:50 a.m. worship hour. The Sunday 11:10 Small Group invites you to their next short term book study. Starting on May 14, they will be discussing the book One Way Love: Inexhaustible Grace for an Exhausted World. In his book, Tullian Tchividjian, is convinced our exhausted world needs a fresh encounter with God’s inexhaustible grace - His one-way love. Sadly, however, Christianity is perceived as being a vehicle for good behavior and clean living - and the judgments that result from them - rather than the only recourse for those who have failed over and over and over again. Tchividjian convincingly shows that Christianity is not about good people getting better. If anything, it is good news for bad people coping with their failure to be good.
