AND THEY DID

John 21:1-8 Rev. Charlie Wilfong

Life changes at an ever-increasing rate. It’s hard to keep up. Technology changes the way we live from how we get our news and entertainment to how we travel and pay our bills. Changes around us challenge us to adapt. Adapting is also the path to making things better in our lives, our families, and our world. It’s insanity to continue old behaviors while expecting different results. But, what changes should I be making in order to enjoy the best life possible? The risen, living, and ever-present Lord Jesus helped his first followers to do that. And Jesus will help you, too!

Classic Worship Notes Two keyboard toccatas by J.S. Bach and Bernardo Storace grace worship today. The name “toccata” derives from the Italian word “toccare” which means, “to touch,” referring to the activity of the keyboardist’s hand touching the keys. This musical form served as a means through which a keyboardist could display his or her virtuosity. Thus, it is written in multiple parts that require different types of command over the instrument. The Toccata in G Major, BWV 916 by J.S. Bach (1685-1750) bears the characteristics of toccatas written by Bach’s Italian predecessors during the 16th and 17th centuries. It is a multimovement work in three sections. The first is quick and sprightly with scales, arpeggios, and chordal figurations. The second, titled “Adagio,” is like a baroque Italian aria. Listen for the melody in the top voice underpinned by surprising harmonies. The final “Allegro e presto” is like a gigue, with dance-like scales and arpeggios that cascade until the final note. The “Ballo della Battaglia,” (“Dance of the Battle”) by Bernardo Storace (published in 1664) imitates pieces that originated in Spain. These pieces, called battle toccatas, were used to display the fiery reeds that characterized the Spanish organs. We don’t know exactly where Storace would have been exposed to Spanish music, but we can say that the Spaniards imported their music into Italy while they ruled the Kingdom of Naples. “Lift Thine Eyes,” (a setting of Psalm 121) from Elijah by Mendelssohn features PUMC’s Women’s Trio. Finally, the postlude features Bagatelle by Naji Hakim, who is a renowned living French composer.

One Way Love: Inexhaustible Grace for an Exhausted World The Sunday 11:10 Small Group invites you to study One Way Love: Inexhaustible Grace for an Exhausted World starting May 14. In his book, Tullian Tchividjian, is convinced our exhausted world needs a fresh encounter with God’s inexhaustible grace - His one-way love. Tchividjian convincingly shows that Christianity is not about good people getting better. If anything, it is good news for bad people coping with their failure to be good. We look forward to you joining the group in the Koinonia Room. If you have any questions please contact Mike Rohrer at indyroar@gmail.com.
