John 21:9-14

The

Fragrance Grace of

Rev. Charlie Wilfong

It has been suggested that our sense of smell is most closely tied to memory. Fragrances often evoke vivid memories of places, people, events, and experiences. Some odors bring pleasant memories, others difficult or painful ones. After returning alive from the dead, Jesus prepares breakfast for his followers over a charcoal fire. The only other time a charcoal fire is mentioned in the Gospels is when Peter denied Jesus. How will the distinct fragrance of the charcoal fire make Peter feel when Jesus hosts breakfast? Will Peter remember his failure and scold himself? Will Jesus scold Peter?

Trumpet Tune David Johnson

Classic Worship Notes Much of the music experienced in worship this morning was composed or arranged by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958). Born of an aristocratic family, Vaughan Williams still discerned throughout his life a calling to serve through music and other expressions including in the World Wars. Today’s prelude was written by this gifted composer and is based upon the Welsh hymn tune Rhosymedre, which was named for a small village in which the Anglican priest (and the hymn’s composer) John David Edwards served for more than 4 decades in the 19th century. The first hymn this morning also features that same tune – although perhaps less familiar to some in the congregation, the tune is stunningly singable. Consider opening your hymnal to follow along with the tune during the prelude, and continue using the printed music as an aide for singing the hymn. Triumphant and majestic, Vaughan Williams’ setting of the tune “Old 100th” in 1953 featured prominently in the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The Adult Choir sings this musical staple in worship today at the first two hours and breaths life into the 16th century tune. Such splendor! The closing hymn boasts a musical harmonization by Vaughan Williams incorporating textual and musical embellishments to the traditional Doxology. All of this repertoire fits comfortably within the musical sweet spot of our pipe organ, which receives its first public debut concert this afternoon at 4:00. Free and open to all, the Organ Celebration Concert certainly deserves a hearty “alleluia!”

11:10 Small Group Study

One Way Love: Inexhaustible Grace for an Exhausted World The Sunday 11:10 Small Group invites you to study One Way Love: Inexhaustible Grace for an Exhausted World starting May 14. In his book, Tullian Tchividjian, is convinced our exhausted world needs a fresh encounter with God’s inexhaustible grace - His one-way love. Tchividjian convincingly shows that Christianity is not about good people getting better. If anything, it is good news for bad people coping with their failure to be good. We look forward to you joining the group in the Koinonia Room. If you have any questions please contact Mike Rohrer at indyroar@gmail.com.
