John 21:9-14
The
Fragrance Grace of
Rev. Charlie Wilfong
It has been suggested that our sense of smell is most closely tied to memory. Fragrances often evoke vivid memories of places, people, events, and experiences. Some odors bring pleasant memories, others difficult or painful ones. After returning alive from the dead, Jesus prepares breakfast for his followers over a charcoal fire. The only other time a charcoal fire is mentioned in the Gospels is when Peter denied Jesus. How will the distinct fragrance of the charcoal fire make Peter feel when Jesus hosts breakfast? Will Peter remember his failure and scold himself? Will Jesus scold Peter?
