Process theologian Charles Hartshorne teaches us that there are two kinds of power. There is the kind of power that we are all familiar with, the kind of power that causes things to happen. Either by physical force or persuasive words, we can make someone else do what we want them to do. This power can be used for good or for evil. The other kind of power, one that we are less aware of, is the power to hold the energy in the room, or the world, while the community/ family/ nation works out its conflict. This is the power of Jesus on the cross, holding all our fears and anger and sin, to bring us through the struggle to a resurrection, or the power of a mother holding a screaming toddler to get through to the other side of a tantrum. On Mother’s Day, we look at this second kind of power.

Classic Worship Notes The music in worship each week at Plainfield United Methodist Church features a diversity of styles, sources, time periods and nationalities. Binding together all of these myriad works of art are two guiding principles in selecting music for worship: Its ability to reveal to us God’s unceasing love and a commitment to quality music in worship. The three hymns in worship today are all found in the United Methodist Hymnal, and yet their provenance outside of that publication could not be more diverse. The opening hymn is a late17th century German chorale (hymn) with text by Calvinist Joachim Neander, one of the most significant composers after the Protestant Reformation. It is a musical backbone for generations of Christians world over. “Majesty, Worship His Majesty” is a comparatively new hymn, having been written in 1981 by Jack Hayford. The poet and composer was born in 1934 and served as the pastor of a Pentecostal megachurch in California until his retirement in 1999. He has written more than 600 hymns and choruses to date. The final congregational hymn includes text by British Methodist minister Fred Pratt Green (1903-2000) and music by noted Irish composer Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924). C.V. Stanford was a central figure in the musical renaissance of the U.K. leading into the 20th century, and his hymn tune titled Engelberg is featured as both the closing hymn and obliquely within the postlude.

11:10 Small Group Study
One Way Love: Inexhaustible Grace for an Exhausted World The Sunday 11:10 Small Group invites you to study One Way Love: Inexhaustible Grace for an Exhausted World starting May 14. In his book, Tullian Tchividjian, is convinced our exhausted world needs a fresh encounter with God’s inexhaustible grace - His one-way love. Tchividjian convincingly shows that Christianity is not about good people getting better. If anything, it is good news for bad people coping with their failure to be good. We look forward to you joining the group in the Koinonia Room. If you have any questions please contact Mike Rohrer at indyroar@gmail.com.
