On Confirmation Sunday we are often reminded of the seeds of faith that have been planted in our young students as they come forward to be Baptized or Confirmed. We sometimes forget that Confirmation is not graduation, and Baptism is rarely if ever our first or last act of faith.
It is perhaps easier for us to see children as the ones with a lot to learn, and we expect to see the tangible results of their learning and maturing in the form of good grades and expanding skills. However, seeds of faith are planted in all of us, seeds needing nurture and intended to grow strong and blossom over a lifetime.
In some of the Gospel’s most classic scriptures we see Jesus teaching before the whole community, the young and old, from the curious seeker to the strongest disciple. These passages emphasize the growth of the seed more than the age of the disciple.
