REV. CHARLIE WILFONG

Toccata Festiva Richard Purvis

On this Memorial Day weekend, the pipe organ repertoire includes at least two commonalities: The music is all written by 20th century American composers, and all are based on hymns found in the Methodist hymnal. As denoted throughout the printed worship order, you are encouraged to turn to the stated hymn number and observe how the repertoire incorporates a given hymn tune. We welcome to the organ bench Frank Boles, a gifted organist and choral conductor from Indianapolis. The prelude’s hymn tune, commonly associated with the text for “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” was written in 1813 by John Wyeth. The offertory is based on music from the hymn “Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah,” written by John Hughes in 1907. And the postlude’s tune is a traditional Dutch melody from the early 18th century but wasn’t included in a hymnal until 1906. Our opening hymn features music by composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, whose music filled much of our worship earlier this May. Be sure to note the hymn tune name located in the bottom, right-hand corner of page 711, which translates to “without name.” As the musical program year at PUMC draws to a close, this Sunday marks the final installment of the weekly printed Classic Worship Notes. They will return to this location in September, and in the meantime let your curiosity guide your musical and spiritual exploration over these summer months.

Membership Discovery The Membership Discovery Class provides an overview of the ministry and mission of PUMC and helps participants find meaningful places to connect within the church. Participants are invited to consider membership at the conclusion of the class. Please contact Pastor Elizabeth Gilbert at egilbert@pumc.org to learn more.
