ReV. eLiZaBeTh gIlBeRt When was the last time you received a hand-written 'thank you' note? When was the last time you sent one? Surely technology has changed the way we show our appreciation and send personal messages. Today many consider an electronic 'thank you' note just as meaningful as the old-fashioned written kind. Some still think a proper 'thank you' puts ink to paper. Regardless, the act of thanking someone for their kindness and generosity remains an important practice. Giving thanks is also an important spiritual discipline. As the generous Giver of all good gifts, God desires our thanks and praise. Scripture helps us understand how meaningful this is to our relationship with God and others. When was the last time you sent God a 'thank you' note? Maybe it's time for another.

Message

Thank You Notes

Rev. Elizabeth Gilbert Give Thanks

Time for Prayer Pastoral Prayer The Lord’s Prayer 895 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Giving

Because God gives, we give. Thank you for your generosity.

Offertory

I Call to You, Lord Jesus Christ

* Hymn for Parting 102

J. S. Bach

Now Thank We All Our God

* Dismissal & Blessing * Postlude

And we urge you, beloved, to admonish the idlers, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with all of them. See that none of you repays evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to all.

Scripture

Hymn of Thanksgiving 2036

But we appeal to you, brothers and sisters, to respect those who labor among you, and have charge of you in the Lord and admonish you;13 esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.

Prelude for Thanksgiving William Steere

Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise the words of prophets, 21 but test everything; hold fast to what is good;22 abstain from every form of evil. May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this. 1 Thessalonians 5:12-24 (NRSV)

At BOOT Camp, recruits will learn to battle sin, equip themselves for daily battle, and how to march against the darkness with the Gospel, advancing on the enemy and helping to claim territory for the name of Christ! Recruits are training to be warriors for God! Please contact Children’s Ministry Director Amanda Norton at anorton@pumc.org with questions or for more information on how you can be a part of this high-energy, impactful and fun week!

Join the Summer Chorus The PUMC Summer Chorus is open to all people – you don’t need to have extensive musical experience, and you don’t even need to be a member of PUMC. The ensemble sings music ranging from spirituals and hymn-based choral anthems, to classical favorites and even a surprise or two. Singing on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of June, July and August, the Summer Chorus rehearses from 7:00-8:00 on the Thursdays immediately prior to those Sundays. Email Director of Music Michael Pettry for more information: mpettry@pumc. org.
